    Hello Lisa I love your response to this video. I love the pep talk that you're giving everyone. Letting us all know it's okay to like what we're creating. And not let others make us feel inferior. You're one of my favorite quilters❤️ out there in UA-cam land. I love watching your videos, and I have learned so much. From what you've taught Looking forward, to watching so many more VIDEO'S. And learning more techniques that you have to show us.

    I love how positive you are for new quilters. Not only do I not allow others to take my joy I also pick through comments and advice that is given to only use what works for me. I did the same as a mother. We are all different and you are so right. What works for one may not work for another.

    Hi, Lisa. You are so extremely GENEROUS to share your trade secrets. I LOVE all of your videos. I just found you and am enjoying learning. I have made a couple of t shirt quilts in the past few years, but wish I had found your videos BEFORE making them. They turned out fine, but I could have done it easier and faster with your techniques. I am TERRIBLE at math so your graph design for the layout will help me SO much. I retired in early 2010 and a girl I worked with mailed me a large box of baby clothes in 2011. She's the pushy sort and I reluctantly agreed to make two quilts for her. I was really terrified since at that time I had never made a t shirt/memory type quilt. I never opened the box until about a year ago when I suddenly became alarmed that the clothes may have rotted or molded. So I opened the box and saw that everything was okay. I finally started on the first quilt top this January (2021). All I've done so far is rough cut the clothes and sewed extra fabric at the tops of some to preserve the collar/necklines. I have fused the interfacing to the backs. THEN I found your videos. Now I'm watching so many videos trying to make sure I know how to make the final sizing of the blocks so they fit together and I don't mess up as I did in my previous t shirt quilts. I REALLY APPRECIATE that you are so generous to share this information. I just LOVE you!!! Another thing I notice is that your quilt edges (after binding) don't "waffle" as mine do. I take such great care in applying my bindings trying not to stretch anything, but the quilt edges ALWAYS waffle. I'm thinking maybe I'm putting too much tension on the quilt top on the longarm frame. I noticed that your quilt top is a little bouncier in your frame. I also saw in someone else's video that they dry run the machine over certain areas of their quilt and if the foot catches on an area, they loosen the quilt top tension on the frame a little more and that solves the problem. I will try this next time. Next up, watching your video on pricing my work!

    I did a hand pieced king size hexie quilt. I was going through a period of depression and it helped so much. However, I am not good with basting and basted it skew. I hand quilted it and found out about it being skew when I was half way through the quilting. I added extra fabric to the backing where it was short. I don't know of a perfect person. I love what I do (hand embroidery, knitting, crochet and quilting) and it is for me and to the glory of God. Thank you Lisa for your channel. Love from Wendy in South Africa.

    Hahaha! Oh my gosh I love that you’re a rule breaker at times!! I do love putting on the binding, I’m just not great at it yet!! I’ll get there with practice. The rules I’ve broken in the past include not pressing every seam. But watching your previous videos & that you addressed that- I’m gonna do better. Because I really do want to produce beautiful quilts!
    Thank you for the time you put into your videos & your transparency 🤗 it’s heartwarming. Thanks for letting me hang out with you!!

    Thank you for sharing your process. It was a lot of fun following this project along. You do excellent work! Yes, some quilts are to be admired, from afar, on a wall. But my favorite type of quilt is one that is treasured, loved, used, sometimes a bit abused, and ... crinkly!

    Thank you for sharing. My mother had a quilt/drapery shop in her home for about 25 yrs. I was an adult with my own children. When she would get a large job she would call 2 of my girls and I to come work with her on Saturdays. I already knew how to sew, but I learned so much from her and so did my girls. I've continued watching videos as I am now retired and a Nana to 6 little darlings. I haven't sewn any since my 36 y/o eldest daughter was unexpectedly found dead. Her belongings have been stored blocking my machines and supplies. But thanks be to GOD I have finally began getting the desire to do things again. I was watching you so lovingly and patiently work on someone else's memories...and a light switch came on! You have truly inspired me to make a quilt from my daughter's clothing that I had no idea what to do with them. I couldn't bare to throw or give them away! They are too precious to me. I will have enough to make several quilts for her daughter and other family members. Thank you again for sharing. GOD BLESS YOU!

    Thank you so much for posting ways to put the binding on that may be a rule breaker. I don't mind in the least if I have to change something to make it more comfortable for my hands or easier to quilt. I have never given a quilt to someone that handed back to me and said "you did this wrong". They usually don't know anything about quilting, in the first place. lol I'm usually their hero for giving them something they can't do. They know how long it takes me to get it done and I dare them to start condemning my ways of quilting. Now I could understand if it was a client and they ask me to make it a certain way, so far all of my quilts have been gifts. I'm still a beginner quilter from what I'm told. I have only done this since fall of 2019, and I have made 21, I believe. I love it. Thank you for teaching me your tips.

    Thank you from the bottom of my heart to hear that there is no quilting police when we are creating something for our selves. I enjoyed you removing the quilt, (first time I have watched a long arm in use) would love to see a “crooked” quilt squared up. and while I’m am wishing I would love to see the quilt loaded also. Never saw your way of connecting strips to make binding before, but it looks so much simpler than the way I do it, cannot wait to try it. I truly hate binding because of making the strips is so much work. Your way of binding is easier than what I have been doing. Looking forward to trying your method. Thank you for recording this series so that we can always watch and refer back to your process.

    Mission completed magnificently....I’ve throughly enjoyed this series and have plans to do one for my husband..he’s into Hot-rods and has many t-shirts that it’s a running joke with us because he has soo many. In fact he’s just got back from Texas and brought back 10 t-shirts ...he’s goes over to the States once a year and that’s the usual quota he brings home. So needless to say we had to retire some old one to the “to be quilted “ pile so there was room for the new ones. 😂🤣
    I’m never to old to learn something new or get a tip and think “why didn’t I think of that”. Thanks to wonderful people like you who give up their time, others are able to learn and give it a go ...wither it’s the right way or wrong way is a matter of opinion. Finally.. I hand stitch my binding.. because I enjoy it ..having a newly finished quilt draped over my knees while I relax and enjoy my work is a wonderful feeling for ME ...especially in winter 😂.thank you Lisa 😘💐

I love working on projects in the evenings as well.....my hands seem to need to fiddle with something......while my body is saying I need to REST hahaa. Lisa, you have taught me alot on making tshirt quilts. Using glue is the best idea I tried. It keeps everything straight and laying flat. I like to turn on my smart tv and just watch your videos even if I am not making what you are teaching. The way you go about teaching really keeps my attention. As far as printing photos to use on quilts using June Taylor, paper, have you ever tried using dye sublimation? It works great and the photos never fade or crack. If you haven't , I think you would like the quality it gives.

Great work and I'm so sure that quilt grew as you were binding. On those corners I have to use clips. But you did awesome. I hope you enjoy your new quilt studio coming up. You won't know what to do with all that space. I'm a beginner self taught and quilt for my children and granddaughters. I work on a Longarm and love my Feather weight to piece. Wow! Such a beautiful job! I have never had a quilt turn out square enough to bind without completely squaring off before. That is the worst part of quilting for me. I am in awe of your quilting skills because of this. I have learned so much from your videos, please make more! A series of tips and tricks would be much appreciated. I have already incorporated most of your tips into my own sewing, but can always use more! Thanks for taking us along with you on this quilting journey. It’s a beautiful quilt, you should be proud. Oh, by the way, what rules? My grandmother taught me to sew more than 50 years ago and she had her own way of doing things also. Many of them were like yours, now I use them too. God Bless

      Hi Brenda, thanks for watching! So I have a couple of reasons...#1 I don't pre-wash my backing or binding fabrics or any other fabrics I may add to the quilt, so I like to wash the finished quilt with some color catchers and make sure I get any run off dyes. #2 Also, when making a quilt I must drape the quilt at some point or another all over the floor about 100 times LOL....I like to make sure it's all clean and ready to use when they get their quilt :)

      Hello :) I used the Juki HZL F-600 in this video, it's an AWESOME machine to use. I've never used a dry cleaner for quilts.....not sure how that whole process works, but something to look into! You could always find a laundry mat near by that has one of those bigger machines. I don't think the tub in mine is any bigger then usual...but it does have a bedding setting...so maybe that helps the motor??

    Hi Lisa - I am doing my first t-shirt quilt and so appreciate this video as it is time to bind! I got to about 35:10 in the video and noticed that it looks like the edges of the quilt are sewn close to the edge before you start putting the binding on. I think I missed something somewhere. I did not use a longarm, but am wondering at what point after you cut off the extra batting and backing do you sew along the unfinished edge and what do you make that 'seam allowance'. Looks like maybe an eighth of an inch on the video? Thanks for any direction!

      Hi Mary I'm so glad you're following along with this series and to hear that you are making your 1st tee shirt quilt that is so exciting! That seem that you see near the edge is actually where I basted the quilt on my long arm. You can certainly do a basting stitch around all of the perimeter of your quilt top to keep those edges from unraveling, I'd stay as close to the edge as possible so that the binding covers it up :)

    Hi Lisa - I have a question about stitching the binding on the front side of the quilt. When you fold it over to the front side is the stitching from the backing side viewable if you lift up that small flap on the front when you are done sewing, or should you sew so that the stitching from the back side is on the inside of the seam so you can't see it at all? I hope that makes sense! I keep viewing that section of your video and cannot picture how I will not have two lines of stitching when I'm done. (Scary part!!)

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  4 роки тому

      that does make sense :) Ideally you'd like to finish your binding on the front so that the seam from attaching your binding on the back is hidden under the front portion of binding. That usually takes some adjusting with your needle placement and varies quilt to quilt depending on the materials you used in the quilt (batting and such). You could always make some smaller quilts or mugrugs to practice and see how the binding turns out doing it this way before tackling a larger quilt being unsure if you like the results :)

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  5 років тому

      I wish I could Doris hahahaaa. I don't really have a formula per say. I start my needle at quarter of an inch....and then move it to the left a few notches and start sewing. I only go a few inches, and then I check the spacing by folding the binding to the front. If it just covers the stitch line I keep on going. If it doesn't....I only have a few stitches to pull out and then re-adjust.
