Two lions attacked by crocodile!

  • We were at Wilderness Safaris' King's Pool camp in Botswana, with our amazing guide ND tracking two young male lions we had seen in the area the day before. We found them by the Linyanti river between Botswana and Namibia, and watched them drinking water. Then the younger one stepped into the water and they both cautiously looked around, before turning back. We thought they would come back out of the water but then we saw the younger one going back in. Our guide saw a crocodile on the right and we saw the older one look at the croc. Again we thought they would turn back but the younger one kept going in deeper. The older one hesitated and then followed him in. As they swim across the crocodile speeds up and while we all watched with our hearts in our mouths, the younger lion was attacked by the crocodile. The older one then attacks the crocodile and effectively saves his younger brother before going under the water. The younger one started swimming back and we thought the older one was gone, but then we saw him pull himself into the reeds - incredibly they both survived with no injuries! See that video here: • Lion brothers survive ... The older brother was stuck on the Namibian side of the river for the rest of the day, while the younger one waited for a while, before finding a young lioness and mating with her (video here: • Young lion brother mat... ). When the older brother came back later in the day, instead of challenging his younger brother for the lioness as would be expected, he waited nearby. An amazing wilderness experience we were privileged to observe and an incredible older brother!
Thanks to Wilderness Safaris and Alluring Africa (alluringafrica...) for an experience of a lifetime!
UPDATE: many of you have asked for the close up / zoom - here are the photos showing the attack close up: bit.ly/2pX7cxU

This is a very great shot that captures the beauty of the wild in both life and death situations these wild animals face every second of the day.
I don’t understand why people comment that the Lion is the king of their domain. It doesn’t mean all other animals “bow” down to them. The alligator is a carnivore and he/she wants to eat, too.
These are wild animals living out their lives in freedom. Yes, they analyze up to their capabilities but then their instincts take over. Hence, they are called wild animals and they live in the wild because it is untouched. It exists freely and their law is that of the law of nature.
Of course lions are beautiful. They’re my favorites too. But in the bigger scheme of things all animals are beautiful really because they live and exist to fulfill the balance of nature. They all serve a purpose. Yes, nature is savage and cruel. But it is also very beautiful.

We were at Wilderness Safaris' King's Pool camp in Botswana, with our amazing guide ND tracking two young male lions we had seen in the area the day before. See that video here: ua-cam.com/video/f-4wCZjOo6w/v-deo.html The older brother was stuck on the Namibian side of the river for the rest of the day, while the younger one waited for a while, before finding a young lioness and mating with her (video here: ua-cam.com/video/LVYrC3QsX5Q/v-deo.html). When the older brother came back later in the day, instead of challenging his younger brother for the lioness as would be expected, he waited nearby. An amazing wilderness experience we were privileged to observe and an incredible older brother!

Even though this Croc attacked at a vulnerable movement, Crocs usually have a healthy respect for lions. I've seen the two in stand-offs before, and I've seen lions attacking Crocs before. They know how to kill a Croc. Jaguars actually hunt crocodile, camine, gators for food, and they are very good at it. Jaguars actually leap into the water to kill them if they have to. Lions are a lot less keen on getting caught in the water where they are at a big disadvantage, but on land, they can kill a Croc more easily.

May 15 -- A safari-goer in Botswana captured video of a lion rescuing its younger brother from an attack by a massive crocodile in a river.
The video, filmed April 20 at Wilderness Safaris' King's Pool camp, begins with two male lions swimming out into the Linyanti river between Botswana and Namibia.
The filmer said the older, larger lion appeared apprehensive about going into the water with a large croc nearby, but ended up following its brother into the river.
The crocodile swims toward the big cats and attacks the smaller lion, quickly dragging it under water.
The larger lion leaps onto the croc, causing it to lose its hold on the smaller feline, which quickly swims back toward shore.
The larger lion and crocodile thrash around in the water before disappearing out of view.
The filmer said the safari group initially feared the larger lion had been killed by the crocodile, but they soon spotted it climbing ashore on the other side of the river.
"Incredibly they both survived with no injuries!" the filmer wrote. "The older brother was stuck on the Namibian side of the river for the rest of the day, while the younger one waited for a while, before finding a young lioness and mating with her. When the older brother came back later in the day, instead of challenging his younger brother for the lioness as would be expected, he waited nearby."
The filmer applauded the larger lion for being "an incredible older brother."
