  • This is a typical Tecumseh snowblower carb.
    NEW CARB for under $20 amzn.to/1Qaefc6 in recent years China has released these carbs. I do think the original carb that is cleaned will work better, but these are a decent alternative if you don't want to tackle the cleaning.

    Thank you SO much for your excellent videos. I haven't been able to use my ancient Sears Craftsman snow blower for the past couple of years because it just wouldn't run. I am a 61-year-old female who didn't even know what a carburetor looked like or where it was. After watching your videos, I was able to remove and clean the carburetor and my snow blower is now running again. I couldn't have done it without you :)

      This^ Best comment I have read in a long long time. With all the crap you see and how commercialized the platform has become, it's comments like these that remind us why most of us came here in the first place. Not to laugh at others expense. Not to troll , bully , shill or to get likes. We came for help. Either to get help with everyday problems or help others with theirs. People wanting to help each other. Thank you so much for your comment Ms.D. It made my day. Kindest Regards

    Sixtyfiveford...I TRULY cant thank you enough for doing this video. My pops had very similar model and never...EVER...did tune up and the night before a big snow storm we asked him did you check to see if it works, his reply " it starts up every year, so its fine"...Im sure by now you see where this is going. Wake up next morning to him stressed out cause it will not start. So I had a little fun with him first and broke his balls about not checking it and etc etc, then broke his balls about not having a smart phone, which if he did he could youtube some videos. Just when I was about to see steam coming out of his ears...I took out my Note5 phone, searched and found your video...did everything you showed and it started right up. Again, I really cant thank you enough for putting this video up! YOUR THE BEST

    I've cleaned carbs for years on small engines, never really had much knowledge of how they work, just made sure all the holes were clean and everything moved again that was supposed to move. Thought I'd see what I could find on UA-cam for a video on the subject. I appreciated your explanation of the working of the carburetor as well as older versus newer models. You obviously have a great working knowledge of carburetors and you shared a lot of excellent information and didn't waste any time doing it. Sincere thanks!

    Dude I watched your video to prepare myself to do that exact job and I’ve also watched about five other ones and I want to tell you that you were the only one to mention that there’s no air filter on a snowblower. That’s awesome because I haven’t taken it apart yet and nobody yet has mentioned that in any video that I’ve watched so thank you very much for the quick and detailed explanation.

      True, snowblowers have no air filters. I am repurposing my snowblower engine for a summer use horizontal sawmill so have had to makeshift an air filter. It was a Briggs engine and I did manage to attach the air filter. It did require some mods but it works just fine.

    I tried out this "trick" as we got dumped with some really wet snow on Friday. I had some 7 ply conveyor belt that I used to modify it with and it worked perfectly. Usually I would have to shovel this type of snow, which really sucks because the heavy stuff is what you want a snow blower for. It worked so much better that we my neighbor asked what I did and we fixed his snow blower up this way as well. Thanks so much you saved my back a lot of pain.

    Yo! Henry from Long Island NY here! I got a Lawn Boy 5/24..looks just like your blower in the video, with identical carb! It started but ran like crap, bogged out, and only ran while in full choke. I took off the carb and the bowl was full of gunk! I need to go out and get a new bottle of carb cleaner to do the rest, but I have to tell you that I love your videos! Very informative and you do a superb job! Ill post back and let you know how it came out!

    Thank you for this video! I have never worked on engines before but the idea of spending $200 to have someone repair a $600 snowblower just didn't make sense to me. My MTD yard-machine snow-blower just refused to start. I followed all your steps one by one and while doing so I wasn't convinced it was going to work for me because the carb was awfully clean inside and out. But sure enough after putting everything back together, she runs like new! If you were neighbor, i would buy you a beer!

    My 5.5 Horsepower Craftsman snowthrower after two years of sitting was completely without a pulse, so I followed the corrective action as detailed in this very informative video. To-day with new life the beast stands ready to defend the honor of my driveway......first class help to us all out there....thanks sixtyfiveford. BTW I was unable to effectively use the inlet needle to
    place the seat in it's required position. When placing the seat in position the contact (pointed) end of the needle only served to expand the seat in the tunnel resulting in a jam. After some light lubrication and the use of a suitably sized drill shank placed over the seal I was able to eventually apply pressure and guide it into place. Many thanks my Craftsman now works as new.

    I want to thank you so much for this video.
    Im moving where I no longer need a snow blower and I
    wanted to sell mine. When I pressed the primer bulb,
    gas would leak out on to the tire.
    I thought it was the primer hose, so I replaced that, but
    the problem was still there. I then bought a kit to
    replace the needle valve and the main issue, which
    I felt was the cup washer. My little clip for the needle
    valve was very loose and not what I would have wanted,
    and the pin that holds the float pops out like nothing if
    you put the snow blower on its blade cover/upright.
    When I press the bulb now, I do not get the feeling
    that Im getting pressure, but when I put it together
    and pressed the bulb 10 times, it started right up
    and keeps running like a champ.
    Thank You so much for your help with this video !!!

    I finished, did both snow blowers. Both machines I had to replace the float valve seat, only realizing it after putting it together and no gas would flow into the bowl. Also, the machine that is newer and run only a few times about 10 years ago had more gunk than the old machine that I used last year. I swear the newer machine must have had linseed oil run through it. It smelled like varnish and was sticky, I couldn't believe it. Used 3 cans of carb cleaner between the 2 machines.

I replaced it with one that doesn't have the screws on the bottom to regulate it. My question is after that I was unable to start my snowblower. Also, the right of of the there is this bolt and above is a diagram for on/off; I have the bolt total tightened.. is that correct?

    I cleaned the carb according to very easy instructions and engine now starts, and will run. My problem is that here is a small, and I mean really small pinhole on the carb body above and between the primer inlet and the 2nd adjustable needle valve that spits out fuel while the engine runs. Is there a plugged air passage in there somewhere?

    I check it at 7:49. I just dont talk about it as it wont change unless it has been messed with. Its a very basic setting which is to set it level with 90% of all Tecumsehs. I show how to do it in my other Tecumseh carb video. The reason your blower stalls is most likely a swollen needle seat not allowing the full travel of the float.

    Gas should fill the float bowl at all times even with engine off.
    Your float must be stuck up or your needle stuck up. You could also have a plugged fuel line. I would put my hand/mouth around the fuel tank filler gas and blow. This will pressurize the fuel tank and for the needle down if it is stuck.

    Your carb still has a blockage. When the choke is on air physically forces fuel into the engine. Does the main jet (holds on the carb bowl) on the the bottom of the carb have a screw coming out of it or is it only a bolt?

    You could have a hole in the air line that leads from the primer button to the carb or the carb bowl gasket is bad. If you push it fast 5-6 times it should start dripping gas out of the mouth of the carb.

    Great video, very informative. Couple of suggestions. Getting your cleaner nozzle into some of the holes is a little easier if you slide a wire in the tube of the cleaner. If you don't want to scratch stuff to remember where it went take pics as you tear it apart. The wrench on the main jet confused me a little, the "little more than one turn" reference is to turning it in to gently seated..... regardless of what position the base is at.

    YOU ROCK!!! I was able to take my non-starting, 19 year old snow blower and get it running again - THANK YOU!! A quick question - when I got to the part about pulling the priming bulb hose off the carb - I noticed that their wasn't one! What is the best way to get to the bulb to attach a new hose and string it back through to the carb? Do I have to remove the entire cover by the recoil string? If so, I see the 3 bolts on top holding the cover - are their more? Have you happened to video this removal?
    Thanks again!!

      sixtyfiveford Thanks again! Unfortunately something is funky with mine. I removed the top three bolts and the one on either side. I can wiggle the entire front cover - but.... The top will slide off ~ 0.75 inches before binding. The sides each will pivot ~ 0.25 inches before binding but it is almost like the inside the bottom is hung up. I can slide a piece of paper between bottom of cover and frame so nothing is attached there. If I pry out on the left side, the right side pivots in and visa versa - but I can't get it to pull straight out. Could there be something inside the bottom of the cover that is hung up? Sorry - but this one has me stumped!

      If you don't have an electric start there is a flap on the opposite side of the carb. It is held on with small bolts and will keep the cover from sliding off.

    Great job! My Toro 824 xl snow blower will only start after pouring gas into cylinder (via removed spark plug). It then fires right up and runs perfect. I've cleaned the carb numerous times and it's spotless. During the Last clean the bowl gasket broke. I glued it back together and reinstalled it. There was no change in the non starting issue and it again it runs perfectly. You mentioned the gasket can cause primer issues. It does seem like the primer is not pushing gas into carb? I did confirm that it does push air at the hose end that attaches to the carb though. Any suggestions? The machine is in excellent condition otherwise and always run with non ethanol fuel and garage kept. Thanks

      If the bowl seal isn't air tight it won't prime. They primer simply pumps air into to bowl and it forces fuel up the main jet/emulsion tube into the throat of the carb.

      Ok Thanks, so if i replace the seal and still have the non start issue then the only thing left would be a blockage in the main jet/ emulsion tube. Look at the little tiny holes inside the carb while you spray carb cleaner. If they don't spray smoothly out of these after several attempts, then pull the welch plug. That's the problem with these Chinese carburetors. a lot of them aren't jetted correctly and your engine will never run right. One comment: I used the screw trick to remove the gasket to clean it - bad idea. It came out chewed up. You should only remove that deep set gasket with the screw as described in the video if you plan on replacing it! (The result is the float won't completely stop the gas from coming from the tank.)

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  11 років тому +1

      The needle seat is leaking. This can be from several things: float not set level, bad float that fills with gas, debris in-between the seat and needle, seat put in backwards float doesn't move freely.

      To make sure it is going to seal while it is apart put your mouth on the fuel inlet and blow in. With the carb upside down the weight of the float by itself should 100% seal the needle and seat.
      If you need to remove the seat without damaging it, use compressed air and blow in through the fuel inlet. Be prepared to catch it. Make sure the double ridges go in first away from the needle.

      Very strange and frustrating. I can't get any fuel to get into the carb. If i take the carb off, gas is pouring out. So there's no blockage or pinch or shutoff issue. I must have have some sort of a float/needle/seat issue?

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  8 років тому

      You should be able to pull the bowl and when the float drop fuel should start dripping. If not, your needle is stuck or seat swollen from carb cleaner or ethanol gas.
      Make sure the clip on the needle is around the float tab and not under.
      Make sure the bowl is put on with the deepest part away from the fuel inlet.

    • @benkrasner473
      @benkrasner473 8 років тому

      Yep that's where I'm at as well. My guess is swollen seat.
      Pulled the bowl, no gas through. Put just a little blowing air pressure on the gas tank top and gas started going through. Lifted the float, gas stopped. Dropped the float, gas started again. Took the carb off the machine again and just tried blowing air through the gas inlet - same results. As soon as I put the bowl back on again, though (in correct position), I couldn't pass hardly any air through, and when I actually tightened it into place I got nothing. I tried about 40 different positions of that bowl to make sure I wasn't imagining things but the same was true.
      With the bowl off I can see the needle moving well - not getting stuck or hung up. It is installed correctly using the wire clip. But the float only needs to move the smallest amount up before I lose flow-through again. So I'm hunting for a new seat to install, tomorrow, when my supply house is closed of course. LOL.
      Thanks again for your responses. Never been up against a swollen seat before so it showed my ignorance.

However, I have an ariens with the 3HP Tecumseh engine. I just did a cleaning on the carb. I replaced the bowl gasket, the O-rings on the emulsion tube, the needle, and needle seat. There is no adjustment screw on the main jet. The 2 problems are: after getting it all back together A. even with priming, takes 4-5 pulls to start. B. It seems to run at 75% throttle instead of full throttle, once in a while it will surge to 100% but not often. Ideas? Do I have the hole on the butterfly valve in the wrong place? Did I tighten the bowl too much? Any ideas would be awesome.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  11 років тому +1

      ----Hard to start: Generally that means the priming function isn't working right. Either there is a hole in the hose or a leaky bowl gasket. The primer button simply forces a burst of air into the carb bowl. It goes in above the fuel and the fuel is displaced and travels up the emulsion tube into the throat of the carb. This extra fuel helps it fire.
      ---75% Throttle: lubricate the linkage and the lever arm that controls "stop, turtle, rabbit"

      +jdacdt Running too lean or a sticking exhaust valve is usually the culprit. If it is an adjustable jet carb simply screw the main jet out a little (1/8 of a turn) and you should be good. If this does nothing it is more than likely the valve and I wouldn't worry about it as it will run forever like this.
