It sucks that there are people out there who help themselves to others property. Unfortunately it is in campgrounds I guess, as well as stick & bricks neighborhoods. Sure do miss the "good ol' days" when we could trust our neighbors though. Safe travels and I sure hope things start turning around for y'all!

Tell me about it. I live in a nice neighborhood in a (comparatively) good city and at least twice a month a couple thieves can seen being on camera in the middle of the night checking door handles and the back of pickup trucks. I've also had a large job box stolen out of my truck that was locked and probably weighed 300 lbs. 5 am, 10 minutes and all on camera. Bold as heck.
Cameras won't do it, lock it up. My dad told me years ago that locks only keep out the honest people and to do what you can, but expect theft at some point. It's a fact of life. Not worth letting it consume you basically, but don't make it easy either. Miss you dad. Thanks for all good the locks!

Thanks for that insight. I live in NYC and what I came to realize is that it’s not that people are thieves. But when they see something that’s easy to take there minds tell them, it’s easy let’s go for it. I just brought a class A and before going to sleep I make sure that my bay doors are locked and things that can move or walk away on it’s own I store under lock and key. I am glad that it wasn’t paranoia because I really felt that way. Thanks again and sorry for your loss.

@C. W. Sayre That's not entirely true. Ever heard of a crime of opportunity?

    • @allaboutroofing2
      @allaboutroofing2 3 роки тому +4

@C. W. Sayre Yes, it's a crime but I think you're missing my point. Why make it easy or tempting, thus increasing the odds of someone that might not normally be a criminal as you put it, but it's just too easy so to speak. You don't think human psyche plays a role, risk vs reward and morality that some people think if due diligence wasn't taken to lock up or whatnot somehow they deserve it being stolen. That or 'someone else was gonna take it' mentality. Not everything in life is as simple as black and white. No lock is theft proof for someone determined enough, but locking things up greatly reduces the risk of it dissapering, why is that? 🤔

I was camping in near Rushford Minnesota and dropped my wallet in the park. I realized it after riding back to the camper, I rode back the same way but no luck. I immediately canceled all my cards. So I spent the next week looking for cheep or free things to do. I was dreading the hassle of getting a new driver's license, so I was dragging my feet on that one. After a few weeks I received a package in the mail with no name just a return address. When I opened the package I saw my wallet with the 150$ still in it they didn't even take money out for postage.
Things like that renewed my faith in humanity. Unfortunately not everyone is like that.
Sorry for the trouble. And sorry for the loss of your brother.

I totally get not locking up their bikes, they have nothing to be embarrassed about, I would have had the same thing happen if I was them. When you start worrying about locking things up all the time it sours the experience, they were not doing anything alot of would have done or not done. Thank you for this great video, as well as all your others, from which I learn so much. I do have to say something after reading many of the comments here. My parents owned a trailer park (today would be called campground or RV park) in a resort area from 1960-1993. Things got stolen all the time. Clothes -- including mine -- were stolen from the laundry room; my dad's rifles were stolen from the pump house; peoples skis walked away. The difference was there was no internet and no text messaging, so only a couple people knew about each incident. Also, let's face it, there was less to steal. The "overnighters" were in 13 foot trailers and later, 24 foot Winnebagos. There were no TVs, or e-bikes, or expensive mountain bikes. There were no $300 EMSs hanging on the electrical posts or portable solar panels. People aren't worse now than before; we just hear about it -- and thieves make off with more valuable things, because we are fortunate to camp with nicer things.

EXCELLENT AND FINALLY AN INTELLIGENT COMMENT. quick question to everyone saying “put air tags on the bikes” and maybe I'm confused as hell about how they work. If they are notifying people carrying them, what dang good are they?????? My mother borrowed a handbag of mine that had an air tag left in it. She called me about two hours later to ask me about some strange message she was getting on her phone. So basically it would have alerted the purse thief to toss the air tag!! What good would that do? Very unlikely that the item is located before the thief catches on?? Right??

@@LizAmazing I get your point but cameras really aren’t the deterrent in bank robberies. Bank robbery is a SERIOUS federal crime against the entire financial system . To the point though, even in bank robberies all you get from cameras is a video of a masked (likely) disguised criminal after the robbery was committed. The FBI is not going to investigate a campsite theft nor will local law enforcement investigate with any fervor whatsoever ( as shown in your Utah bike theft) . Pretty much all you’ll get is access to their report. Criminals know this and just don’t care anymore.

If you have a $3,500 bike, bike locks, chains, alarms, and security cameras won't help protecting it. Let's just say no amount of locks and alarms can prevent it from being stolen if it's worth $3,500. All they need is an angle grinder and a quick getaway truck. They can just cutaway the whole bike rack and chuck everything on the back of a pickup truck. The alarm can sound and it doesn't matter because it only last a few seconds. Security cameras? Unless it's inside your RV. If it's outside, the thief will take it, too. Not like they can't take the one inside, They would just break the window glass and go inside your RV and take the security cameras (and everything of valuable also).

Yikes!! Sorry to hear that! I guess I am somewhat lucky in that I don’t trust anybody, anytime. I triple lock my bikes to my carrier, which is also locked to my truck. I don’t care if I’m friends with everyone camping next to me. I lock everything, all the time.
Hate to sound so negative, but I trust no one. Sometimes embarrassed to say I’m a member of the human race.

There’s been a few times we’ve had people steal from the camping area and a couple times items in the storage compartments. I have a bad habit of leaving them unlocked. I’ve noticed the people that own the RVs tend not to steal, but their guests that are more likely to be a lower income level. So I would suggest locking up your compartments and don’t leave anything outside you’re not willing to loose.
I would also pay attention to the inventory takers. Some come as friendly neighbor and you’ll pay attention to them looking pretty much through your entire site. You’ll also have the inventory takers from the road. This is people that look a little too long inside your site or come by more than twice all the while looking at your site.
If you have been paying attention, you’ll notice those inventory takers will usually be missing at the same time your stuff disappears. This happens more with parks that have permeant residents, but not limited to those parks.

So sorry about your theft. It breaks my heart to hear. Long-time biker here, with my share of losing bikes from theft over the years- but I've slowly lived and learned what to do- and not to do- to minimize the chance of it.
Firstly- you're starting over, so... Remove the batteries from the bikes before you put them on the rack- whether your parked (it'll make them one step less attractive since they're incomplete) and on the road (so there's no chance of them coming loose.) Any room for them when you're parked in your RV basement storage? Do you have quick-release hubs? Remove the front wheels, too. (They won't be able to ride away and again, they'll be one step more unattractive to steal.
NO Cable Locks, folks! They can be cut through way too easily. Yes, ANY lock or chain can be foiled, but the idea is, the better the chain and lock shackle, the longer it takes to cut and the equipment needed is noisier. Don't try to save money on your locks!
Think about WHAT you're locking it to. For instance, if a bike with a high-end chain and lock wrapped around not only your bike (which a thief isn't going to cut through since that's what they want) is then wrapped around a bike rack which is made of plastic or thin tubing which can be cut, then it's vulnerable. Ideally, if your rear bike rack that the bikes are chained to is made of angled or square steel, it'll be tougher.
Think about and research GPS tracking devices that can be inserted stealthily somewhere in your bike.
Consider storing your bike IN the RV when you're not nearby or are sleeping.
Chain your bikes together, as well as to something. Use multiple locks. They'll be hard to take away if chained together.
Good luck everyone and happy biking, camping and RV-ing!

Every time I here stories of thieves at campgrounds, it makes me miss the 1970's when my mom , my brothers and I would go camping at a state park here in ohio and people were friendly, helpful, and wouldn't steal other campers things. It makes me sad that everything has to stay locked up 24/7 when you're camping at a campground to keep thieves away. Then what is the point of even bothering to go camping whether it is in a motorhome, 5th wheel, travel trailer or in a tent if people are just that messed up that they have to take your stuff the second you look or step away from your campsite for a second. I guess since I like to tent camp I'm going to have to invent and build a portable electric fence with about 30 cameras attached to it to fence in my campsite everytime I go camping from now on, so no one bothers my stuff when I have to leave to use the campground restroom and showers or go for a walk around the campground or on a hike or bike ride. I just wonder how many volts of electricity I can get away with from my portable electric fence to send fear into potential thieves without going to jail though.

Hello, oh gosh you both have been through so much this year. Ok now you both can have a fabulous rest of the year. We camp in remote areas, we have one huge Mareema guardian dog. He is chained to be able to go right around our camps and will not let anyone near us and our camp. Yes extreme but we too have e-bikes, and boat plus motor and a whole heap of equipment. Unfortunately not always in an internet area so cameras will not work for us. We trust no-one!!!!! It is very sad but this is how the human race has evolved into untrustworthy a-holes! Our dog is big (150pounds) huge white teeth and has a growl that is very scary. The police have said to us, let the dog sort anything out and call us we will clean up the mess!. I used to leave my car door unlocked when I parked in my garage. Until one day someone watched me unload my car with the garage door open and I set my keys down in the garage. I was inside for under a minute and walked back outside and no car. I know most people are good people. But it only takes a split second for things to go south.
