Just bought a VSX 820 at a thrift store for $10, with remote. Yippee! Half way home ( I live nearby so was walking) I realized something was rattling around in side, and a few of the casing screws were missing- -doh. Thought I was sunk. I opened it up and reconnected a plug someone had unplugged. Nothing. Then did a google search, and up came your vid. Long story short, I followed your guide and got the same DC 001 error. But then--a miracle. It seemed to clear itself and the system is working fine, at least on both stereo outputs and h/phones. So thanks a million for taking the time to create such a solid video. Much appreciated.
+Shaun Sanders If I had to guess the protection error occurred because of the disconnected plug. If I remember, I think it does have to be cleared even if the problem is fixed before the unit will power on. This is a case of someone messing around for no reason inside of the receiver at some point. But sometimes like you found out, these can be the best ones to find.
wondering if you can help me. I have the Pioneer VSX-D71OS and my sub woofer is not receiving any signal and I have it connected to the sub pre out! any help will be awesome!
Took me a year plus to digest this video. I started watching this video and could not understand at all. After doing some very minor repairs of resoldering and tipping of my solder station that fell of the floor causing it to not heating the solder tips.I successfully repaired my first device which is my soldering station. I went on to look into the basics of transistors with NPN and PNP. How to troubleshoot these . I got some basic understanding to transistors and went back to this video once more. I finally able to grasp into what the video is guiding about. I desoldered some of the transistors which are labelled B1560 , D2390 and C3964 transistors that had somesort of thermal paste stuck to the heatsinks. Tested them with multimeter on diode mode and turned out that they're all busted on my VSX821 pioneer unit. One note though, u need to get into the basics of understanding NPN and PNP of these transistors on how to troubleshoot them before attempting to know how to try your luck. And when desoldering, take extra care on not using desoldering pumps. I learnt my lesson using them since i'm not very good with soldering. These pcb are crap. the pump sucked off the copper sheets that were glued to the pcb.
Distinguishing PNP and NPN is very important, especially in these 50V circuits, make big smoke fast when you get them reverse, wooo! :) I have gotten them reversed, some of these companies cross references are crap, and they reverse the leads. That will get ya if you are not careful. I like the fine wire solder. For me it is easier to control the flow of the solder into the joint than using the standard fatter stuff. Heat can be a factor in lifting traces on the PCB, too much will make them lift, but the crap PCB from china are almost just a 1 shot wonder and they fall apart on a repair attempt even when you are being careful.
Nice job on a successful repair. Couple things worth noting: Power transformers are generally pretty reliable and don't fail often (though high frequency/voltage xformers such as those for backlights in monitors/LCD tvs do have a higher failure rate), the fuse would be more likely to blow on a lightning strike, preventing damage to the transformer anyways. Output Mosfets are a common fault for causing a receiver to go into protection mode and should be one of the first checks (Passives, in general, don't usually fail without the failure of an active, so usually its more productive to check actives).
Dude I have been all over my Pioneer VSX-822 inside and out both the receiver and the schematics and all I could find wrong was broke solder joints that I resoldered. But it still never would function. After following your directions on resetting the fault code it now functions. GREAT, Thanks.
Great video! I've had many things across my table for repairs. I watched this while troubleshooting my father's VSX 3800 that was packed away for about 15 years. There was no sound on the right channels. Turned out the contacts in the relay were burnt. That relay could be opened up with some careful cutting. I cleaned the contacts and bent the one slightly and she came to life. Your video was a big help!!!
Wow! I am impressed with your persistence, value sensitivities and deep electronic circuit understanding skill set. My conclusion is that this must be a hobby and a passion if I were to relate your time and effort to your results. I used to do this as a teenager, but alas my patience is not the same. It is obviously an intellectual challenge which you enjoy. Thanks so much for sharing this project with us. For me, I am looking for a few tidbits to isolate the problem and hopefully resolve the issue without my trusty soldering gun. Thanks again.
Yes it is a early childhood development either you like what you are doing or it doesn't work. I almost had to give it up when I got married and the children were born but like h.i still dabble to try to keep my skills sharp since electronics evolve every year and you can easily loose track plus all the neat expensive gadgets your expected to buy just to keep up with the times
Thanks for that valuable video , I have a pioneer home receiver vsx_ 522k and one day it would not come back on, I opened it up, checked power coming in and when it got to the transformer no power was coming out, I was gonna change the transformer, but after watching your video of how to reset the receiver the receiver came on and been working ever sense, you saved me unnecessary money if I would of changed that transformer, thanks again.
First real comment on a video since I've had a smart phone. listen I can't say thank you enough. 300$ pioneer tuner 3 years ago and the Andrew Jones speakers and subwoofer. Anyway my son spilled pop in it last year and it flicked on and off few times and shut off. So back then i about threw it out because it wouldn't power on. so adv surr and standby I found online and it worked.. so was all good till about 3 weeks ago... It would power on but play nothing. I tookl it apart to look for bad fuses because that's about the only electronic smarts I have for ideas. I saw your video once and skipped threw it and said yeah no way I can do or check all that.. I unhooked it and threw it in the garage. Bored one night I looked on here again and ended up here again. decided give it a lil more time watch and seen you check and clear the dc code... went to garage and said fuck it lets try. said dc-13. I CLEARED it and did it again then it said dc-0. I hooked up a speaker and she worked. so thanks so much for this video. love my stero systems so was about to drop 400$ on new tuner but I'll see how much linger I can get with this one.. Can't thank you enough.. Read a lot online and seen nothing about checking and clearing error codes...
I highly suggest "One For All" remotes. They have a lot of the advanced features that original units have. It is by far the best brand of universal that I've found so far.
Nice job. I was almost screaming - the emitter resistors! But you found them. The relay is an odd failure on these, but great you found a workaround. I do Pioneer warranty work and others. You can contact me if you get stuck on one of these.
I feel like the speaker terminals on both channels came into contact. The relay was the weakest point I guess on that channel so it fried it's contacts inside. When i first got the unit to display the fault code, it came on with a volume of 48. I don't like how close the wires are to each other. I need to swap to some banana plugs for good measure. It is still working great though!
Would You happen to have any info on the transformer in the vsx1021k like a data sheet Im needing the input and output voltages abs if the outputs are ac or dc power thanks
Newer receivers with all the gimmicks aren't usually an upgrade in sound quality. The manufactures cut the budget to the amp and power supply to pay for all the the gimmicks and any associated royalty fees to use the products.
The end of low THD and high SNR receivers/amps started circa 2004. As you mentioned, manufacturers let sound quality suffer to hit low price points and still cram as many features as they can (wifi, Bluetooth, multi room, USB, etc). This receiver is a great example. In perfect working order, its THD is near 0.1%! That's shit! SNR is only double digits as well (98db). This is a wasts of time repairing in my opinion. Better spent on a Yamaha from the 90s
You are a master and very brave to open one of those. Seeing your deft knowledge and troubleshooting skills I am in awe and very glad I never tried, especially knowing there was 110 unshielded right on a board like that! Yikes!!!I had a VSX before and the thought of opening that thing was terrifying. Too bad the fancy ‘puter features are not even worth all that time you spent getting it work. This video was was so good that alone made this exercise worth it! Also, you should move near Electronics Plus so you don’t have to cannibalize your other donor gear!
De-soldering iron: Radio Shack used to make this model and you can still get them on eBay. Radio Shack carried the iron clad tips which lasted longer. I still have my soldering iron and this hooked up to a variac to control the heat and get the tips to last longer. I added a fairly long plastic hose in a 'U' and a vacuum pump to one over 30 years ago. The solder collects in the long plastic hose which is fairly easy to clean - or replace. Occasionally the metal tube gets plugged. A hand held propane torch can heat it up enough to allow the solder to flow out. With a vacuum pump, it does a great job of cleaning out component holes and even allows removing older style chips without damage. I included a foot switch for the vacuum pump. I still have it and use it on occasion. When soldering / de-soldering: A good electronics flux is your friend. Fluxing leads and wires prior to tinning can make a huge difference in quality of solder connection and they solder faster which means less heat on the spot.
Now, on a more serious note, if you replace the output transistors, you should then set the idle current as incorrect setting will not only decrease the efficiency of the amp, it'll also reduce the life of the components. Here's how you do it: With no input and no load, turn the amp on and leave it 1 min to warm up. There is a 3 pin test plug on the board for each amp and a variable resistor. You need to adjust the VR so that the voltage across the outer two pins of the connector reads between 1.8mV and 2.2mV, ideally 2.0mV (Pin 3 +, Pin 1 -). That's it, done. It's very simple but very important.
hello mate! I've got a european VSX-527-K here. basically, had the same issues as yours, but on the rear right channel. on the main AMP5 assembly:- two 0.47ohm (R603,R604) resistors blown, KTA1024Y(pnp) (Q449) - KTC3206Y(npn) (Q460) - 2x KSA992Y(pnp) (Q455, Q456) transistors blown, and the 2SD2390(npn) (Q452) and 2SB1560(pnp) (Q458). after re-tuning the idle current on that channel, the amp module now runs sweet. the only problem left to solve, is the permanent "overheating" error followed but a shut down. apparently, there is a way to increase the threshold, but each VSX has a different key combo to change it. also, getting the service manual was a drama - after abit of research, the service manual for the VSX-1022/822 seemed fine (although the amp module is labeled for "VSX 321/421/521/821") sorry for 'spamming' your comments section with info, mate. but, seeing I was looking for info for my problem - others might gain from it (and save hours searching the web) ;) ref. the overheating error - any tips on how to get rid of it? even with the amp module removed and after a reset, it still 'plagues' me, lol. all I want to do, is listen to some Slayer. (doesn't everyone?) (: thanks for posting, btw - subscribed!
Great Video - very informative. I have a VSX-522 unit with a similar problem. I get the DC001 error when starting the system. However, if I disconnect all of the power transistors and put the amp board back in the unit there are no errors. I am fairly sure it is the output transistors. However, I am not getting a dead short across any of the terminals. They all seem to read ok (diode setting on multi meter) with the correct polarity set, but when I test the collector to emitter, I get a reading on the multi meter (diode setting) that there is continuity. I was of the opinion that it shouldn't show any continuity at all no matter how small. Can you advise if I am on the correct track here please. John
Great video. I have a VSX-1022 that stopped working the audio and video even the headphones don't work after a power outage. It turns on and all the selections work. I have ran the diags and no errors are reported. Any steps to do next?
Just a silly side note: Station 107.90 was just in the middle playing Eruptions, which would've been a good listen for volume purposes. Good video and informative. Ive got a Sansui G-8700db that needs a little tweaking here and there. I got inspired from your vid.
+BadRonald1 I love the looks of those sansui G series receivers, though I prefer the one without the digital display more so. Very nice receivers. I just uploaded 2 videos on a sansui s-x1130.
WaybackTECH Thats cool, I'd like to get the 33000 or the Pioneer 1980. How long have you been working on Receivers ? Im looking forward to learning electronics. I know its gonna take a while, any advice ?
BadRonald1 some say the 50 series pioneers are better than the 80 series. I've been messing with this stuff since I was... gosh 10 maybe. use to get walkmans and car stereos at garage sales and fix them when I was a kid. I had a couple of those electronics learning kits that radio shack used to sell also. Figured stuff out that way. probably if I was starting out now, I would get some electronics kits, like an AM Radio kit, to put together. Those are less than $10 on ebay, and you can learn how to solder too with those. Start off with something cheap so if you screw it up, no big deal. Almost have to screw something up to learn :)
I know how to solder pretty good, Ive been into this fore 4 years. But man Im still trying to figure out Transistors with the Emitter, base and collector or the gate. PNP or NPN ? You never went to school for it ?
I used to hunt old TVs and radios that people were throwing away when I was 12. I'd take them home and fix them. Once they were working again I'd sell them in a yard sale. Often times people would walk by and remark that they had a device just like the one they saw there. I made enough money to buy my first computer that way. I also got myself one of the original NES consoles and my school clothes that way. It pays to ask the right question of the guy who owns a repair shop as a kid. I had a lot of fun figuring out how all that stuff worked.
Thank you for your great video i Pressed the power button and the surround batton and i can hear it POWERING on now i also changed the fuse on the plug but the front LCD Panel not displaying , before it stopped working i spelt something burning inside the apm when i had it full blast had andrivana app coming from my laptop i fryed someting?
Great vid. i turned the volume setting l ch r ch down to - 10 now vsx74txvi pioneer receiver keeps shutting off. I cant change the settings back because it shuts off i reset but didnt help. is there a way to reset the ic ? maybe refloat it?
great video! the other owner to fry the unit like this, he was really pushing hard with the amp. he fried the mosfet resistors and the relay.... good job
Greetings friend. The other day I got into the hands of the same device. I found out that the standby power supply burned out. But since it burned out, I can’t understand what voltage it gave out on the secondary winding? Do you remember how many volts there were? After the diode bridge, up to IL1117-3.3V?
Great video. I have an onkyo txsr353 that does the same thing, no stby light and no power on. The button sequence that onkyo gives does not work at all. Suggestions?
That was a great video! When I lived by myself back in the mid 1980's I did full repairs on the kitchen table as well. She won't let me do that now. :-(
good job, without a diagram we have to just hunt & peck around to find the trouble. you said there are 2 clicking sounds, does it also have a power on relay?
Very true. What threw me for a loop was the absence of a standby LED, and looking up the problem on a google search. Both kind of led me on a goose chase till I had the sense to look up the correct power on protection bypass sequence from the manual. I looked it up on google first before getting the manual and none of what people said worked :) Yes the first click is power on/stand by and the second is the protection relay on the speaker terminals. Standby is what everyone on a google search said was a common problem with this model, and the 520K. So that is where I initially thought the problem was, in either the standby transformer or the VR on the underside. Both were listed as a common failure of this model. I was under the impression since the standby LED was not lit, it must mean the standby voltage is not present in the unit. Boy was I shocked to see there was no standby LED at all on this model.
WaybackTECH Hey guy, I've got an onkyo reciever which was working fine before the move. Now I turn it on after 5 seconds it turns itself off. Can you help me? Thanks.
carlos perez Probably going into protection because there's a shorted output transistor. On a Sansui I'm working on I measured 49volts DC across the speakers terminals, that shouldn't be there so I'm replacing the power output IC, it's that large Chip with several legs. I also found some bad caps. I don't know your model no so it may have 4 or more separate audio output transistors instead of one large power output IC.
It's on Onkyo txsr506 receiver. stanby power control with seperate buttons for different inputs. Power comes on, lasts about 3 seconds and then with a loud click shuts itself off no matter which input I'm using. Lots of outputs. Mostly RCA but also straight wire connections which I was hoping to use. I have nothing connected to it now. Still wont work. Of course its the weekend and I havent been able to get hold of anyone. I used to fix electronics but that was 20 years ago and I don't have ant of my tools anymore. Don't think I even have a volt meter.
carlos perez you need a multimeter, I got one for 20 dollars on ebay. I worked in a repair shop, the owner would remove the STK's and then power on the receiver, it came on ok he knew they were bad. If it has transistors in the output check them with the diode test using the DMM. A common problem is they short collector to emitter. Also check or replace the emitter resistors, probably .22 ohms or something like that. In the Mitusbishi amp I just fixed it has transistors in the output they were all ok but I had to replace the driver IC, it's a large STK. Also check to see if there's any DC voltage across the speakers terminals. See the video here on youtube Onkyo TX-SR502 receiver shorted channel. I see he used NTE parts, but it's best to use OEM parts if you can find them.
Very Good Video. I have a Pioneer vsx-524 that does the same thing. I took it to a technician who made me buy a lot of parts including transistors, diodes and resistors but each time he would put in the parts they would pop as soon as i power up. It will pay fine if the defective channel is disconnected. i had to take it back from him as i grew tired of buying parts and this is only for 1 channel. FR. could you say what could possibly causing the parts to go out?
I would assume the tech tested the receiver at his shop before calling you to pick it up. Based on that assumption which could be wrong of course, it could be a shorted speaker or wire causing that channel to blow.
On the first attempt it didn't even give us the opportunity to start playing (i was there) . it just pops the resistors each time and blow the transistors. Right now it is playing but with the damaged channel disconnected which is really not working out for me. :(
A few question. -Lookin from the way how u align those boards and got it hooked to the wall socket.. Will it short and boom ? I had my worse experience when i once place a board on top the other board, it exploded when i fire it up. Which is why i got really careful with pcbs. -I did not have the same problem as u did. But my receivers are not producing any sound to my speakers. I noticed the weird symptoms though. Usually when i fully powered down the system, took out the cables. Plugged it back in again and got it up, the volume would resets back to 30. Though this time, it did not reset. It seems to stay fixed at the last volume i shut down.
I will keep my vsx-d411 receiver. Keep it simple. I think what happened is a speaker connection got shorted while connecting at back , or the speaker overheated and caused an arc in the relay and shorted the mosfet. I have had voice coils in 20 watt car speakers blow like a fuse and others would start to cook like a heating coil, but the amp was still good. A lot of people sadly just connect any old speaker and end up letting the magic smoke out of the parts. That is the thing about ebay. You never know who with whatever experience has looked at items first and gave up, or was a considered not worth fixing by a retailer. I find those newer amps are temperamental. Even slight things can trigger errors like turning on a light switch under the right conditions. The computer circuits can loose their "bits" and need a restart. A rule is always use these with a power strip and shut them completely off when not in use or when a long power outage is happening.
I have a Pioneer model VSX-403. I get one station. I van push the tuner up and down buttons and watch the numbers change, but I hear the same station no mater where I set the number. Obviously I need a tuner. I know what one looks like and how to change it in an OLD stereo. But I have no idea what to do with this. Can you send me a photo of what to look fore?
Don't substitute only one. Please substitute the pair of transistors (with same gain match) Take the 2 complementary from the JVC and put it on the Pioneer. Good work. Regards.
Working on a VSX-523 and followed your steps but it appears the mosfets are ok. I pulled that board completely and still get the error after resetting. Can you recommend another thing to try?
awesome video, super helpful. i was working on a vsx 921 that would turn on but only for about 3 seconds and without an overheating or protection mode indicator would just turn off. the owner said the front left and right output wire ends touched while it was on and its had the problem since. i tried the factory reset and bypassing protection mode but it would still do the same thing. i got a overload error code, so i checked the mosfets on the amp board and found one thats resistance was not like the others in the corresponding place. i unhooked the amp board from everything completely and tried turning it on and now it will give me the over heating indicator and turn off still. any suggestions?
I have pioneer vsx-d710s and when I turn it on it powers off after about 5 seconds. If I unplug it for a day or two then turn it back on and it will run for a few minutes, I did enjoy this video can u help me out
Only one was a Mid 90's VSX-09TX I fixed a while ago had that problem. A couple resistors were fried that fed power to the display and those were mounted on the transformer itself. That was a VFD and not an LED display however.
I have this reciever, and I've seem to have lost audio from two of the hdmi ports, video still plays but no sound. I lost 1, moved the cable to another port worked fine, till now I've lost another and don't have any availble hdmi ports and I'm down one that I actually need. Can you shed any light on fixing these hdmi ports short of replacing the reciever?
Just going from when I was inside the receiver, the HDMI ports and DSP were all contained on 1 board. I would guess the board would have to be replaced only because I think everything was surface mounted and replacing just 1 component would be a real bear to attempt. I would look for a parts receiver on ebay personally for real cheap just to get the HDMI board from it. I've seen fully working units on ebay for under $50 however. Non working i've seen as cheap as $10. I think the board just plugged in but I don't remember now for sure. Each HDMI port is held to the back with a screw. There might be some grounding that takes place there as well. It might be worth a shot to try and tighten those screws a touch to see if there is any effect.
Also if the board is removable, you should remove it and plug it back in. Might be an issue of dirty contacts inside the connector. Of course contact cleaner would be the best way to clean it of course but, reseating the card might be enough just for a test at least too
I have Pioneer VSX921, suddenly notices there is not audio from SBR and SR channel; I checked that there is audio at relay PIN. Other channels are working fine. could it be a problem with relay? any logic that is not turning relay on. Thanks in advance
My vsx-527 turns on and off after 2 seconds for protection, this has happened to me since a speaker short-circuited, I don't know what to do, can you help me? Thanks
I have a Pioneer SX 1280 powers on all the lights work but as soon as you turn it on it makes a loud pop like through the speakers and then no sound what do I look for and what's the ballpark price of getting it serviced by qualified Tech
I have a vsx 529 and don't ask but there was a situation which involved someone and putting a sub into the front speaker channel and now the hdmi just flashes constantly and I don't know what I'm looking for please help
Awesome video, I have the exact same problem on my sony strdn850, I cant figure out how to bypass the standby mode to the error code. I have the service manual but am not sure which button sequence to use to get it to turn on. My power button is constantly blinking. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.
+acidraine0 I couldn't say for certain about your Sony, but a lot of receivers in general do not have the ability to bypass the protection. The blinking is about the only indicator there is on a lot of them. I have found out too these service manuals online are not always complete. I would assume if there was a way to bypass the protection with a button sequence, it would be talked about in the service manual.
I downloaded the manual but the bypass does not work, I traced all of the power and it looks like the main board, hdmi board, and front panel get power but the main transformer secondary relay does not engage for the high power side on the main board. I am getting all standby power but nothing at the big capacitors. I checked the output ac voltage and on the 5 pin I get 45/16/gnd/16/45, should these be a lot higher?
I checked the ac detect cap and replaced that but no difference, there is voltage there and it does go to the cpu, weird thing is when I plug it in and the secondary comes on I get nothing, about 30 seconds later the green light blinks and if I unplug it the front display lights up for a split second and shows volume or something, can't really tell what it is its pretty quick. Any help would be appreciated, I have been poking around in here for a few days trying not to pull my hair out.
acidraine0 Voltages sound about right to me, just from other receivers and the voltages that end up coming into the main amp transistors that I have checked. This is just my experience, but when a receiver goes into protection and won't come out, it means there is a constant fault, usually a shorted main transistor on the amplifier. Probably should check those transistors and see if there is a short between the legs
None of the transistors are bad but I am missing a 7v+ going to the digital board. There is 7v at the IC but gets lost somewhere in between and my manual does not show anything along the way. Going to try and trace and see if I can find it.
I have the vsx 40 and I haven’t used it for eight years, when I try to plug in today and turn on for a second and turn off, the code is the same dc, but I try to disconnect everything with the problem is do the same won’t stay on.
I just saw that video and I think the relais do actually come apart, the plastic housing looks like it's clipped on the rest of the relais. What you could do is use two knife-blades that you slide into either of the long sides of the relais, that should disengage the little platic hooks that keep the housing snapped to the relais and you should be able to slide it upwards. once you got it open, it's probably a good idea to clean the contacts with some contact spray on a piece of paper that you slide through the contacts a few times.:)
i got a pioneer sc-lx73 and some times ween i frist turn on i get a blue flashing lite on power butten then ween you turn it on like 5 to 10 times it get beter then goes on do you no what problem is i been looking around for this problem cannot find nothing around to see what problem is
WaybackTECH , Hello, I got a problem with my old Pioneer VSX-AX4AVi-S reciver. front right speaker don't output sound. Every other channel works. Have tried the troubleshooting from the user manual. Nothing works:(
I have a pioneer delete VSX I have a strange clicking or pounding sound that comes on at the receiver is playing for about five minutes I’ve tried every configuration it always seems to be heard at different levels different volumes can’t figure it out any information
Hello I also have a pioneer vsx 921k amplifier it is no longer heard in the speakers, because a software update failed, the old software did not work and the new one did not install UE33 error occurs the original remote control doesn't work anymore and I can't reach the settings No settings can be made with the universal remote control what can be done ?
I don't, but Maxxarcade did a resto video on I believe an SX-850 and he had that issue when the protection board came into contact with the main filter caps and blew some of the transistors. You might want to check that video out.
Hi, I have a rx-v3900 yamaha turn on ok but the symptom is that when turning up the volume it goes off Where do you suggest that may be the problem? Thank you
great video I learned alot . I have pioneer 1021-k with no sound on any of the back out a and b I tried . What would cause all of them to be down ? If one fails do they all fail ? Like is power not sent to the amps if one fails is this how this circuit works?
Okay, so I am still very confused and if you could help maybe that would be great! I was playing music and saw a spark. The lights turn on but the fan doesn't turn on and it doesn't work. Please help! :(
So my dumbass spilt beer on my VSX-43 last night. The receiver shut down all most immediately and I wasn't able to pull the power plug right away. I pulled the cover off and used a heat gun on low to dry out the receiver. This morning I tried to power it on but nothing happened. I watched the part where you held down the power and advance button and what do you know..... the receiver works. The receiver also doesn't have any error codes. Do you think that the receiver is fixed for good? Thanks for your video
+kevin sheppard Hard to say really. Spill damage can go many ways. I killed the tuner on my JVC receiver many many years ago because of a spill. If it came out of protection and everything seems to be as it was before, then it will probably be ok.
+WaybackTECH I turned the receiver on and off a couple times but I'm going to wait another night to plug my speakers back in to test the receiver. I'll post the results tomorrow. Thanks again for your help.
+WaybackTECH I got extremely lucky this time. AV works just like it did before. Thanks for your tips man. I thought that I may have ruined a $$$ receiver.
I had same issue my VSH-819H No Power and No Display...but there's an input power for Main Transformers...PLS Kindly give me some ideas to fix it...thank you in advance!
I have a vsx 1123, I tried to get the error codes by pressing standby and advanced surround. nothing happened. I had plugged it into a dimmer circuit, 'ooops' didn't realise dimmers have a phase control. am I screwed ?
The only way to know is would have to check and see if you have any AC voltage coming out of the standby transformer. Mine had roughly 10V. This is the closest free service manual I found. You might look at it. A lot of things are probably similar. There might be a slightly different method to accessing the error code than the 820-k. elektrotanya.com/pioneer_vsx-1120_1125_1325-k.pdf/download.html
hello, I am writing to you from Italy, I am a Pioneer lx90 owner, my beloved amplifier has a problem, the lcd display fizzes continuously, how can I solve the problem? thanks Domenico
Hello, I can't close one on my back speaker terminal so I need to replace the unit. Do you know how does it called so I can order this please ? Thanks.
Thank you! Saved my receiver and saved my day with the Advanced Surround + Standby 2 sec hold! Came back to life promptly. Gracias.
@@WaybackTECH thx for the advise. I'll becareful of it.
I have a VSX-823-K and using the RESET of pressing ADVANCED SURROUND and STAND BY at the same time brought it back to life. It works like new again.
Thanks a lot .My pioneer VSX RS 319 dead one month back after seeing ur video I could reset it back to life
I'm new to this kinda repairs, but videos like this help a lot. Thanks.
Just doing the adv surr and power button just fixed mine, been out of service for a month, I feel like a tool! Thanks so much!
very nice how you talk through the solution. 1 speakers wires crossed and touched and now I have to check the amp circuit like you did.
Hey Mark, I got an VSX-817. I have a similar problem - it turns not on. Is there a diagnostic switch on the VSX-817 too? What can I check?
Would You happen to have any info on the transformer in the vsx1021k like a data sheet Im needing the input and output voltages abs if the outputs are ac or dc power thanks
I have 2 pioneers down. Could use your help.
THANK YOU!!!! I JUST RESET AND IT WORKED!! I THOUGHT IT WAS DEAD FOREVER! GREAT VIDEO!!! SORRY FOR ALL CAPS, JUST REALLY EXCITED!
Excellent job. It was very useful to repair my issue with "POWER ON"
De-soldering iron: Radio Shack used to make this model and you can still get them on eBay.
Thanks for the "Pioneering" work (sorry -- couldn't resistor...). Seriously, I think I will attempt the repair...
Now, on a more serious note, if you replace the output transistors, you should then set the idle current as incorrect setting will not only decrease the efficiency of the amp, it'll also reduce the life of the components.
Here's how you do it:
With no input and no load, turn the amp on and leave it 1 min to warm up.
Thanks for the help. My pioneer vsx-40 is now working great with just using the reset
hello mate!
I've got a european VSX-527-K here. basically, had the same issues as yours, but on the rear right channel. on the main AMP5 assembly:- two 0.47ohm (R603,R604) resistors blown, KTA1024Y(pnp) (Q449) - KTC3206Y(npn) (Q460) - 2x KSA992Y(pnp) (Q455, Q456) transistors blown, and the 2SD2390(npn) (Q452) and 2SB1560(pnp) (Q458).
after re-tuning the idle current on that channel, the amp module now runs sweet.
the only problem left to solve, is the permanent "overheating" error followed but a shut down. apparently, there is a way to increase the threshold, but each VSX has a different key combo to change it. also, getting the service manual was a drama - after abit of research, the service manual for the VSX-1022/822 seemed fine (although the amp module is labeled for "VSX 321/421/521/821")
sorry for 'spamming' your comments section with info, mate. but, seeing I was looking for info for my problem - others might gain from it (and save hours searching the web) ;)
ref. the overheating error - any tips on how to get rid of it? even with the amp module removed and after a reset, it still 'plagues' me, lol. all I want to do, is listen to some Slayer. (doesn't everyone?) (:
thanks for posting, btw - subscribed!
THANK YOU!!! This was my exact issue! No one else mentions this fix elsewhere.
My remote was missing as well. How do I program the new replacement AXD7534 Replace Remote for Pioneer VSX-519V-K .Thank you for your time..
Good job man, I'll try those steps on my VSX-D514... It shows the same issues! Thanks for you time to make the video!
At 11:21, does the connector which isn't plugged in have anything to do with it?
awesome video. Really liked your optimism. I have a pioneer rcx that shuts off when powered on. I will try some of your technique. Thanks

Thats cool, I'd like to get the 33000 or the Pioneer 1980. How long have you been working on Receivers ? Im looking forward to learning electronics. I know its gonna take a while, any advice ?
BadRonald1
some say the 50 series pioneers are better than the 80 series.
Hi. I have the same question ! is it 5vac?
Where did you get that solder sucker? I'm working on a vsx 521 just now.
What?
good job, without a diagram we have to just hunt & peck around to find the trouble.
you said there are 2 clicking sounds, does it also have a power on relay?
Very true. What threw me for a loop was the absence of a standby LED, and looking up the problem on a google search. Both kind of led me on a goose chase till I had the sense to look up the correct power on protection bypass sequence from the manual. I looked it up on google first before getting the manual and none of what people said worked :)
Yes the first click is power on/stand by and the second is the protection relay on the speaker terminals.
I see he used NTE parts, but it's best to use OEM parts if you can find them.
hi i was wondering if you had to discharge the capacitors before soldering anything into the boards? thank you
Have the vsx-815 still works but I've lost my paperwork and trying to reprogram the remote for my new systems
Good work. Regards.
Awesome video man! Thanks heaps. I have the vsx818v going to crack it open again tonight!
I have the same problm body getting warm but not switching on no display
@@dehnpereira6382 best to take it to a repair shop.. no idea how much it would be though
Also.... props on the RAT SHACK rosin core solder! I mod...er...FIXED many an xbox with that stuff. I still have some left!
Wow, great job on the repair, can you give me the model number of that desoldering iron you used to remove the relays or where can I get one?
Where do you get this code clearing buttons? I have vsx-2014i and i thinks it's now fixed but i don't find anywhere buttons how clear codes.
Tenho um reciver antigo pioneer Vsx406 mais não tenho o controle vcs vendem e o valor.
Awesome job and thorough diagnostic.
I really like the silver solder it's good for fixing broken connections on circuit boards. The Radio Shack kind is very good quality.
If I unplug it for a day or two then turn it back on and it will run for a few minutes, I did enjoy this video can u help me out
Very informative and great video just a good lesson on stereo receiver trouble shooting thanks.
Have you encountered a receiver that works but the display doesn’t work? I have a VSX-816 with such a case. Any suggestion?
Only one was a Mid 90's VSX-09TX I fixed a while ago had that problem. A couple resistors were fried that fed power to the display and those were mounted on the transformer itself. That was a VFD and not an LED display however.
Thanks so much for replying. I'll check it out.
Thank you for this video! I was able to get my receiver working again!
Where did you buy that desoldering tool? I haven't seen that one yet.
Of course contact cleaner would be the best way to clean it of course but, reseating the card might be enough just for a test at least too
+Mark Lurk I have the 921k, the HDMI board overheats, I just threw a table fan on it
Great video! Got my reciever out of protection mode just have to diagnose what went wrong
I have Pioneer VSX921, suddenly notices there is not audio from SBR and SR channel; I checked that there is audio at relay PIN. Other channels are working fine. could it be a problem with relay? any logic that is not turning relay on. Thanks in advance
I have the same one and won't turn on and I try to find a repair shop but there's none in my area to fix it
My vsx-527 turns on and off after 2 seconds for protection, this has happened to me since a speaker short-circuited, I don't know what to do, can you help me? Thanks
+1 for serious technical knowledge
Good one! I have a VSN 521k, is dead. ANy idea on transformer primary and secondary voltages
Thanks for the video. I fixed my receiver!!!
I have a Pioneer SX 1280 powers on all the lights work but as soon as you turn it on it makes a loud pop like through the speakers and then no sound what do I look for and what's the ballpark price of getting it serviced by qualified Tech
@WaybackTECH can you tell me the value of the resistors you swap ?
0.47 Ohm / 2w flame-proof resistors.
I have a vsx 529 and don't ask but there was a situation which involved someone and putting a sub into the front speaker channel and now the hdmi just flashes constantly and I don't know what I'm looking for please help
thank you very much your video helps me for my repair :)
Would you recommend to buy it in 2023?

Voltages sound about right to me, just from other receivers and the voltages that end up coming into the main amp transistors that I have checked.
What you could do is use two knife-blades that you slide into either of the long sides of the relais, that should disengage the little platic hooks that keep the housing snapped to the relais and you should be able to slide it upwards. once you got it open, it's probably a good idea to clean the contacts with some contact spray on a piece of paper that you slide through the contacts a few times.:)
i got a pioneer sc-lx73 and some times ween i frist turn on i get a blue flashing lite on power butten then ween you turn it on like 5 to 10 times it get beter then goes on do you no what problem is i been looking around for this problem cannot find nothing around to see what problem is
Any advice on Pioneer Elite VSX 21TXH DSP Board Repair?
WaybackTECH , Hello, I got a problem with my old Pioneer VSX-AX4AVi-S reciver. front right speaker don't output sound. Every other channel works. Have tried the troubleshooting from the user manual. Nothing works:(
I have a pioneer delete VSX
I have a strange clicking or pounding sound that comes on at the receiver is playing for about five minutes I’ve tried every configuration it always seems to be heard at different levels different volumes can’t figure it out any information
Can you post a link to the de-soldering tool?
Hello
I also have a pioneer vsx 921k amplifier
it is no longer heard in the speakers, because a software update failed, the old software did not work and the new one did not install
UE33 error occurs
the original remote control doesn't work anymore and I can't reach the settings
No settings can be made with the universal remote control
what can be done ?
any vids on a pioneer SX-950 ('76 ol skool) It powers on, but dead, no relay click, nothing.
I don't, but Maxxarcade did a resto video on I believe an SX-850 and he had that issue when the protection board came into contact with the main filter caps and blew some of the transistors. You might want to check that video out.
thanks wayback, not even close, but thanks ;)~ VSX went microprocessor and all that led stuff ;)
I think the remote would be the AXD7612 or AXD7583. Probably a couple others would work.
Hi, I have a rx-v3900 yamaha
turn on ok
but the symptom is that when turning up the volume it goes off
Where do you suggest that may be the problem?
Thank you
good job! do you have schematic diagrams for power amp ?
Just the one included with the service manual
I have vsx529 and couldn't find service manual. There is operation manual only.
great video I learned alot . I have pioneer 1021-k with no sound on any of the back out a and b I tried . What would cause all of them to be down ? If one fails do they all fail ? Like is power not sent to the amps if one fails is this how this circuit works?
Do you have this gentleman email address?
@@PackardBelltoll 7 Years later... LOL, Did ya figure it out? I have same issue.
Okay, so I am still very confused and if you could help maybe that would be great! I was playing music and saw a spark. The lights turn on but the fan doesn't turn on and it doesn't work. Please help! :(
+TheCleaRkaos I would guess the spark was a fuse blowing, unless something horribly fried itself.
When I start using the advanced surround and stand by, that works, but I cannot get the error code to come up; nothing happens at all.
I got a vsx-821 and I cannot even check the codes, no relay clicks, no power, no LEDs, no display. Any idea where to start?
I had same issue my VSH-819H No Power and No Display...but there's an input power for Main Transformers...PLS Kindly give me some ideas to fix it...thank you in advance!
plz help.... what a vsx 521 stanby transfomer output vaoltage?
What kind of Multimeter do you use?
I have pioneer vsx-1131 and its showing error 0-81 can you tell me what does it means
How can i find replacement transformer for pioneer amplifier vxs820
