10.0.0.0 Subnets -Check ;) Joke aside, what you will do with the Raspberry Pi what we can see from the video? In the last video there were lots of HDDs shown for a second. Did you already built a RAID array with them to store video?
Congrats but quick unrelated question is the arse about face way the Yanks Write the date come from Germany then or are you just accommodating their crazyness?
The output transistors opposite the bulging capacitor should be short circuit. You don't have to remove the transistors when testing, but only remove them if they are faulty. You can use a simple diode test via your multi meter to test the emitter/ base and collector/base gate voltage drop. The capacitor blew because the transistors shorted, same as the burnt resistors. The amplifier must have been sitting around for several years for the corrosion from the capacitor spillage to be that advanced. Short circuit usually happens when owner is fiddling around with speaker wires when amplifier is powered on. Rarely does over driving the amplifier cause the transistors to blow. Dry joints from excessive heat can be another factor for the outputs to go into thermal runaway and blow out.
Salvaging electrolytic capacitors is asking for trouble. The only ones worth salvaging are the mains 400V 185C rated caps which are less than 2 years old. The other elkos should go to the trash, or do not even spend the time to desolder them...
Yamaha made some really good receivers. I remember the Yamaha RX-V2090 5 channel receiver with dolby pro Logic in 1993. This was Yahama's top of the line receiver back then. It was so built and sounded good while watching a movie using Canton Ergo 90 speakers
I got one of these receivers in working condition from my in-laws. I don't blame you for scrapping it, but it sounds very good being used as a 2-channel or 2.1 unit as well. I sold mine because it had only analog inputs and all my TVs are digital only (and I have a Technics stereo receiver already that sits in my shop).
I'd love to see you do more audio equipment repairs or tear downs, as this is something I've always wanted to try, but I am a bit daunted by all the complexity.
no joke i scavenged the exact same model last year and used it make a coffee table with speakers in the side which ive named SUB³. interesting tear down, im loving the videos lately :)
I was enjoying watching your video. Good job. I bought yesterday RX-V596RDS and noticed that volume knob is loose and has play up-down. After cover disassembly it turned out that solution is simpler. Just removed volume knob and used socket key 11 mm to screw the nut from motor shaft. Job done😅
My co-curricular classes at school teaches students about robotics and electronics. Another class had a wide-format printer break and donated it to us. in less than an hour, we had the thing cut open and divided amongst other students to de-solder the components to be sorted into boxes. Later that afternoon, the teacher who donated the printer asked if they were going to fix it. "no." he said with a smile on his face. \ the printer was worth more in parts than it cost to replace...The students had a fun afternoon beating eachother with cat-of-9-tails fashtioned out of gears the wiring from the printer...
Great video, its crazy that even in todays Yamaha's AV receivers that they still don't add a good cooling system (especially with the price tag Yamaha asks for these systems, knowing they have overheating issues) Ive lost count at how many youtube repair videos are out there where the problem is always heat destroying the caps, or other component's on these AV receiver's
I have this unit and still works good. My issue is the power/standby button came off. Can you tell me does this somehow glue to the power switch inside the unit or does it somehow mount to the face plate. Seems like it snaps into the face plate but when i push on it, it just pops out.
Haha! I had one of those when they were brand new.... Not CRAZY Expensive, but pretty expensive.... Sounded very very good. Too late now, but I would have suggested you repair it.... I have a newer one downstairs, too, that isn't working.... Yamaha RXV, I forget the number.... Volume control quit working.... Your videos are inspiring me to take a look at it....
OMG, two days ago I had the SAME maintenance on my RX-V995, it was starting and then turning off immediately exactly like yours, I just gave up disassembling the boards, and cleaned it with a long brush, patience, much sneezing by the powder, and them washing it with Hexane, the unit is running like new. I wish I had a look on this video before my adventure lol.
I have the slightly lower end than that model it uses the exact same power supply configuration transformer and amp stages. That is not due to useing a low impendance speaker nor has it anything to do with the rail voltage selector. That is liquid damage.
I have a Yamaha RX-595 and a intermittent mode selector with remote control capability. Your video was very good but it did not concentrate on the selectors. Can the contacts be cleaned while installed such as with a contact cleaner? It has a metal housing with some holes that surrounds the selector and gear connection for the remote control motor that is mounted 90 degrees to the selector shaft.
So those little black pieces are the amplifiers?? Damn those are small. And they put out how much power? Anyways are those “mosfet” style? And is that considered, class a/b, d...etc?
Have you visited Oslo? The intro showed a single ticket from one of Oslo Sporveier's vending mashines! I'm curious at the circuit you used to monitor the signal from it.
yamaha RXV1500 AV receiver, the fuses are 3A,mounted on 3 vertical circuit boards, they are sealed inside small brown plastic boxes, how do I remove them to look at the fuse filaments?
Was kann man tun ? LG
I am not very technical, so bear with me. I have the same receiver as in the video. It still works... except the display. Do you know of a fix? I would love to keep using it. It would just be a better experience with a working display. Thank you for any tips!
It is a bit late now. But you might be lucky, that the display is actually alright. Just the light bulb of the background lighting might have died, so your display can't be read...
Hi i have yamaha rxv420 and The same problem. Torn on but after 2 second turn Off. Show display status p5 prt 210 B. All pcb look nice. Maybe you have idea thats problem that check i should?
Nice video. I have one receiver YAMAHA RX-V430 and it was in the box storaged for a long time and one day I decided to power it on but it was completely dead no power at all. I checked the fuses and the power in the power supply = 13,3 DC OUT PUT. The capacitor on the power supply is normal there is no blurber. What would you suggest for me to do?
Mine is fried ! Between cat pee & lightning & it being 20 years old & trying to adapt it to new tech . I am joking about the cat pee , but , it can be a real corrosive problem. My Yamaha R-70 from 1982 was of higher quality than the later more recent RX series , what a surprise. "They don't make them like they use to"
Hi ! I have question ! I buy transformer from Yamaha RX-V1500 . But are not what it’s the primary and secondary and how much watts ? One Sade it’s 8 wires and the other side it’s 8 wires but minor caliber ?
I've heard them called "sil pads" (I think it's a trade name) because they are made of silicone rubber. Older tech used mica wafers which were brittle.
We call them thermal pads these days in the PC scene you used them for MOSFETS on graphics cards which need active cooling from your heatsink or waterblock
May i ask you something about this receiver..? is this receiver had backup batere (like c-mos batere in Computer). in ask this because every time i did setting for my receiver like Speaker (small or big), Speaker Volume (Centre, & Surround), then i'm unplug the ac cable power. when i plug in ac cable again.. all seeting that I already set, back again to Factory Setting. do i have to keep ac cable always plug in to keep this setting...?
My Yamaha Receiver RX2065 seems to have a problem, when i select USB Mode, the USB stick light flickers, then the display say's click free, and the remote doesn't connect. I Need Help , Any ideas please. Karl Tasmania Australia .
Hey man. I have an older Yamaha A/V 5.1ch receiver that I would like to use in just STEREO mode and disconnect the on board amplifiers and bypass them to an external 2ch pro audio amp.. I dont have preamp outputs. Just rec out. Do you think there is a point in my receiver where I can desolder the on board amp/s and solder in some RCA connectors to go to my external amp? I am sorry for this confusing question but I have looked and looked and havent found anything like what I mentioned. This vid was the closest and I figured you could tell me if its even worth trying? Thanks.
Niko Bellic thank you for the reply. I will look into that converter thing. I went on ebay and found an older home receiver with preamp out for 40 bucks. . I just don't have video switching now. Oh well, it's LOUWD. I purchased a Behringer km1700 amp. Rated at 1700 watts peak but when I do the math, it's actually a little above 500 watts rms per chanel into 4ohms. I am happy but it would be nice to have video switching back. Thanks

It looks a lot like someone/something spilled some liquid in it, given how there such a large area affected. The capacitor also seems too small to contain such an amount of electrolyte.
Hey, thanks for your video, I was actually having some issues with my Marantz SR-5011 receiver (it shuts down by itself after being on for many hours and enters an error mode with the power led blinking) and was searching for some similar experiences. I started to watch and then just got curious. At some point you mentioned the possible explanation for the Yamaha failure as having to do with some incorrect impedance used and then I remembered that I had set mine to 6 ohms with the previous speakers and my new speakers were 8 ohms. I am curious if it solves the problem. Thanks again!
Thanks for the video, I have a similar Yamaha amp, however, mine shuts down after a few seconds, it seems like its a overload circuit that is confused, have you experienced this before. I also have a technics amp that is doing the same.
Hello, I have a problem with memory backup at my Yamaha RX-V520RDS, so maybe someone could help me solve this. Even short, power loss receiver loses memorized radio stations. In manual there is the statement: "Memory back-up The memory back-up circuit prevents the stored data from being lost when this unit is set in the standby mode. If, however, the power cord is disconnected from the AC power outlet or the power is cut for more than one week, the memory will be erased." As it is stated if the receiver is without power for more than one week, memory is erased, but in my case, it is erased instantly even if it is unplugged for 1sec. In the service manual, I tried to find something about back-up circuit , how it stores data or does it have some kind of battery but could not find anything. Do you have an idea what could be wrong with memory backup? Should there be some kind of battery or some larger capacitor which provides power for memory backup? This is the only issue I have with this receiver, everything else works flawlessly. Thank you.

Please, make a video with the vacuum fluorescent display run on arduino (or something similar)! I've been trying to do that, but didn't know where to find a good multiplexer, that can handle that voltage.
I have used some 74HC595 shift registers with 3904 & 3906 transistors on each output to drive multiplexed VFDs. The transistors drive the VFD pin high, and resistors pull the pin low. Newer VFDs are fairly low voltage, most of mine run on +10v & -20V.
I wish i had your knowledge. . . I have 5 amps that have all broken over the years but I dont know any one who would be able to repair them. . 3 are from self powered speakers which are all pro grade stuff and cost me a lot of money to purchase. I would just turn them into passive speakers but to do that I would have to build customr crossovers, which i plan on doing just have had the time or money lately . . . . it kinda of sucks. . . . :( I wish there were people like you inthis world. . . lol
I really need help my receiver recently Started dropping all volume as soon as bass notes hit I don't know what it could be any suggestions would be helpful but I feel like it might be the output capacitors
I had the exact same problem. I thought I would have to get it repaired. Turns out, my Samsung tv was blinking on and off and when a friend came over to help me disconnect coax cables, one was no good and once we removed it, the tv was fine and I just jumped out of bed to test the receiver and it works at high volume! Check all your wiring in your stereo system
I recently have bought exactly the same receiver for my friend, but perfectly working, except one minor issue. I found it very nice sounding and musical in my stereo setup, so good that decided to keep it and by another for that friend! I think you should not dismiss amplifiers just because they have more channels than you need... ;) By the way, is CD player ok? I would really like having a matching one to my receiver, but did not find any for sale in europe. I guess postage would not be completely insane... Thanks for your great videos! And if you still reading, would you by any chance sell me that big motorized potentiometer? Mine is a bit noisy...

Thank you for your work and process, Gerolf.
At 1:46 I meant "composite" an not "component" video.
Whats your inspiration for the intro?
That receiver was damaged from a liquid spill, it did not do well. The damage was extensive.
You made the good choice and scrapped it for parts
Great video! We need more videos with techniques for fast massive salvaging of components.
no joke i scavenged the exact same model last year and used it make a coffee table with speakers in the side which ive named SUB³. interesting tear down, im loving the videos lately :)
try fixing it, they have (more than) decent sound
Yup. I have the same one, sounds amazing for a mid grade appliance...
salvaging parts was the only right thing to do,trying to repair such a big damage like that costs way more than buying a good working used unit.
I was enjoying watching your video. Good job. I bought yesterday RX-V596RDS and noticed that volume knob is loose and has play up-down.

I did something stupid and fried my Yamaha system. Can you help? When I turn volume up it makes the most terrible electrical distortion sound.

My theory is the capacitor blowing may have been unrelated or happened after the actual damage. To me it looks like someone spilled some liquid in the top. Since these have an open grill to vent the heat, it would be very easy to do accidentally.

Thanks for this video I want buy Yamaha receiver which is best receiver?? from demege?
Hey, thanks for your video, I was actually having some issues with my Marantz SR-5011 receiver (it shuts down by itself after being on for many hours and enters an error mode with the power led blinking) and was searching for some similar experiences. I started to watch and then just got curious. I am curious if it solves the problem. Thanks again!
Thanks for the video, I have a similar Yamaha amp, however, mine shuts down after a few seconds, it seems like its a overload circuit that is confused, have you experienced this before. I also have a technics amp that is doing the same.
listening to you describe the damage, you are describing a lightning strike.
Do you know how to reset the self protect on Yamaha MX A5000? Thanks in advance
The cause of the issue was some one spilled some fluid into the unit and then shorted parts and trace burns outs and massive corrosion.
What’s the project he did after this? Anyone got a link?
Gute Sache. Welches Oszilloskop nutzt du?
i thought there were some tactile smd switches there, also good; and what about the display? usable?
Yes, with the datasheet.
Love the video! Thanks for sharing
I have the RX-V995 still using.
I am getting a ps 192H error is this fixable and does anyone have any tips ?
Hello, I have a problem with memory backup at my Yamaha RX-V520RDS, so maybe someone could help me solve this. Even short, power loss receiver loses memorized radio stations. In manual there is the statement:
"Memory back-up
The memory back-up circuit prevents the stored data
from being lost when this unit is set in the standby mode.
If, however, the power cord is disconnected from the AC
power outlet or the power is cut for more than one week,
the memory will be erased."
As it is stated if the receiver is without power for more than one week, memory is erased, but in my case, it is erased instantly even if it is unplugged for 1sec.
Thank you.
is it possible to make a VGA to scart cable? (with no converters)

I wish i had your knowledge. . . I have 5 amps that have all broken over the years but I dont know any one who would be able to repair them. . 3 are from self powered speakers which are all pro grade stuff and cost me a lot of money to purchase. I would just turn them into passive speakers but to do that I would have to build customr crossovers, which i plan on doing just have had the time or money lately . . . . it kinda of sucks. . . . :( I wish there were people like you inthis world. . . lol
Can't wait for the next video.
Hi, Apocalyptic. I lihed your video. I would like to tell me how to test a power transistor to know if its good or it's not'. Thanks.
Pepito Valdez buy a component tester. They can be had for a low price ~10-15usd
Nothing beats a Klein style screwdriver.
I would love a video of you utilizing the Op Amps you recovered. I still havent completely wrapped my mind around the concept of them.
Seeing the parts you chose to scavenge im going to assume a variable power supply but im excited to see what you really do with it.
Got the model lower down than this the 393, must of had it 15 years+, decent sounding amps, never had any trouble with it
That's composite video, not component (YPbPr).
Yamaha RX V467 DEAD NO 5V COMMING HOW CAN I SOLVE
I recently have bought exactly the same receiver for my friend, but perfectly working, except one minor issue. I found it very nice sounding and musical in my stereo setup, so good that decided to keep it and by another for that friend! I think you should not dismiss amplifiers just because they have more channels than you need... ;) By the way, is CD player ok? I would really like having a matching one to my receiver, but did not find any for sale in europe. I guess postage would not be completely insane...
Thanks for your great videos!
And if you still reading, would you by any chance sell me that big motorized potentiometer? Mine is a bit noisy...
Why are you so vague about your up-coming project? It might have interested us in what you hope to build.
it saddens me to see a great piece of stereo gear die
what are u going to put inside this enclosure?
Im assumeing a power supply but thats just my guess
Nice video ! Thumbs up !!
