We have a new podcast out - bit.ly/2LuoLFG This time I talk with fellow video essayist Thomas Flight - who I'm sure many of you already know. We talk more about Wes Anderson, as Thomas has made some great videos on the director. It will be up on all the common platforms (Apple/Stitcher/Spotify, etc).
Rudeness comes out of Fear. That one line from the Grand Budapest really does sum up a lot of his characters' psychology! This was a really thoughtful analysis of Anderson’s comedy and thematic reoccurrences. Thanks!
I LOVED this. Wes Anderson’s films are something that one either appreciates or doesn’t understand. It’s far too often that I hear one say that “it’s too perfect” or “it’s too framed” like it’s a bad thing. Completely missing the point that that’s the point. He doesn’t want you to forget that you’re watching a movie that’s really more like watching a play.
He uses the framing of a play but takes the advantage of lightning and refined ness of a film. Also you can't really have the same level of sets in a play
Attention Deficit Squirrel I love Wes Anderson but to say someone who doesn’t simply doesn’t get it, is pretentious as fuck. Some people get it completely and still dislike it, that’s the beauty of film.
I really appreciate this video went all the way back to Bottle Rocket and represented films across his whole career (at least up until time of making it, The French Dispatch is coming out soon). A lot of UA-cam videos about Wes Anderson tend to focus on the most popular films, or some of his more recent ones, and seem to forget his oldest films or less popular films exist. This video was clearly produced by a true fan of the director.
When I read someone critical of Wes Anderson film, it basically tells me that they are the type of movie viewer that wants to turn their brain off and be intellectual coddled for 90+ mins. Or...they just don't have any intellectual abilities whatsoever! Anderson is an wonderful storyteller for the simple fact that he is genuine. He takes inspiration from his own life like all great artists. His characters are based on either people he knows or inspire him. He also gets the best from the actors that work with him because he's genuine. It seems as if there is very little ego in Wes Anderson. I believe the French Dispa is his best work yet. I've see UA-cam reviews and read some complaining the movie is hard to follow becuae of the multiple stories and too many characters with not enough time spent on character development. This..,just freaking amazes me. He created a magazine that came to life with incredibly rich characters all while paying homage to multiple writers from the past but, the French culture, Art, the New Yorker Magazine and the French Youth protests of the 60s. All in his Witty and whimsical way while still capturing the human spirit. There is so much absolute garbage coming out of Hollywood the past decade or more. From comic book movies that are just ridiculous to Hollywood elitists passing moral judgment on flyover country as if they have any moral right too. Anderson tells stories we can all relate to because at some point... we are all scared and frail people looking for redemption like an Anderson character. We don't always find it but we manage to find a way to go on.
There is something so appealing about his movies, and it really is that refined quality, which sudden breaks from refinement. The coloring and framing are just whipped cream - that is to say, essential to the experience
This was fantastic!!!! The video editing, the voiceover, the fascinating aspects of Wes Anderson’s films that I’ve never thought of or as in-depth as this and I just loved it! Everyone did a fantastic good, I’m sharing this with everyone
So good. The final line was groundbreaking. Wes always shows the hard experiences which were the deep roots of their character. The various theatrical masks they must wear to survive among potentially painful and tense situations, intertwined with their key relationships. So many levels. J
Oh no! I think I'm about to jump down a rabbit hole binge now! Great video. I love the fairytale like quality of a Wes Anderson film. Even when the story is lacking, you're entertained by the setting, humor, and visuals.
Thank you for doing this about such a unique director that Wes is I really loved watching this because his characters in his movies are so realistic in my mind
i adore this editing. i adore this essay. holy hell i watch a lot of video essays but none as well put together as this. i'm eating up your channel tonight i changed my plans for this. thank you
The way you covered on my of my favorite directors who a lot of people write off cuz of his style makes it an instant subscribe for me. That and seeing you got a Coen bross episode in this series as well, keep up the good work
I loved this video! I've always loved Wes Anderson films but not fully understood why, and this video gives me more understanding of the heart of his storytelling - loved it !
My Favorite Wes Anderson films In Order (what are yours?): Bottle Rocket, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Darjeeling Limited, Rushmore, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom, Isle of Dogs, The Fantastic Mr. Fox. I am very much looking forward to "The French Dispatch" which is slated for release in Spring 2020..
after art school made me sick and tired of wes anderson, this video has given me a new appreciation for his work. thank you for helping me to enjoy films i used to love again
When you seen it, it kan never be unseen. Most hots are square to the object or character. To the wall, fence or opening or in some cases to characters.
*Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel.* Just some of the movies that the "Academy Awards Society" deemed not good enough for Mr. Anderson to warrant an Oscar. This guy needs to narrate a Wes Anderson film. Love his voice
Fuck man, I was thinking the exact same thing, in the opening I thought it was actual narration from one of his films
I think he narrated The Stanley Parable
Narrators name is Stephen Chance, this is coming from reply this channel made to one comment
@@bentonmarcum8509 / I thought so too but apparently that's actually Kevan Brighting
@@limnovae7692 They have remarkably similar voices. I suppose if I heard them side by side I could tell the difference, but to lazy.
Deconstructing Wes Anderson humor by constructing a totally Wes Anderson video essay. Nice.
The six minutes of calming narration that build up into one joke.
I love it.
what joke is that?

I loved the grand Budapest hotel.
Wes Anderson is my favorite director, and this is now at least in my top ten video essays.
Also: Who narrated this? He did an amazing job.
@@derfanddarf1 An actor called Stephen Chance. We've worked with him on a couple of film projects, and he's popped up in things like "The Crown".

what is your fav WA film? im assuming its "the grand budapest hotel?"
This video is criminally underrated. I enjoyed every single second, from start to finish. ¡Kudos to everyone involved!
This was absolutely brilliant, a truly unique video, just like Anderson's films! Keep up the AWESOME WORK!!!

The epitome of modesty. Ah yes, Englishness is quite the civilization, isn't it?

Ok, this is simply too much, even for me.
