How Wes Anderson's 'The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar' Was Made | Netflix
/ @netflixbehindthestreams
From Wes Anderson comes an adaptation of Roald Dahl's beloved story about a rich man who sets out to master an extraordinary skill to cheat at gambling.
It’s tragic that Netflix is making a big deal about just the Henry Sugar short, ignoring the other three shorts in the series (The Swan, The Ratcatcher, and Poison). The other three are just as brilliant and complicated this first one beautifully. They really ought to be viewed as an anthology film and seen together.
Thank you for this informative comment
I didn't even know about those!! I will pirate it immediately.
I watched the other three films just recently. I struggle as to determine whether Poison or The Ratcatcher is my favorite: the tense atmosphere of Poison is especially compelling, with a suitably shocking climax that acts as an intriguing antithesis to the story of Henry Sugar, while The Ratcatcher is more mundane in its setting, but in a subtly disturbing fashion that's wonderfully cemented with the last line. The Swan for me was a bit harder, as it seemed more like a magical realism piece with little to say, but after reading the wonderful article The New Yorker wrote about the entire collection, I can understand and appreciate the subtext. Overall, the collection was great, but I would've preferred if they had kept all the films in one movie, as with Pulp Fiction.
I just saw them. I wouldn't necessarily state them as better than this. This was truly in a different league. Besides, netflix might not have intended to show this is positive light. They just wanted to build hype on at least one. And this isn't a bad choice at all according to me.
Yes. All were spectacularly done.
A bit choreographed? The whole movie is choreographed to an extreme degree!
That's th beauty of it. Making it look like a theatre performance
@anthtan I thought th same thing. What does he mean "a bit choreographed"? Hasn't Wes Anderson seen a Wes Anderson movie?
Ralph Fiennes,Ben Kingsley,Benedict Cumberbatch and Dev Patel. What a combo!! 😍
and Richard aeyode
It was really amazing and Benedict Cumberbatch acting was brilliant ❤
Love his quirky movies. The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Fantastic Mr Fox, etc. So many of his past movies show up in this short movie. Definitely a movie that deserved to win an Oscar!🎉🎉🎉
Wes Anderson at his best, love this short movie! A must see if you like The Grand Budapest Hotel!!
Benedict Cumberbatch always delivers ❤
I can’t believe the video doesn’t acknowledge Richard Ayoade - he was such a good fit for BOTH of the roles he played in this! (And the one he played in _The Rat Catcher_ as well.)
This looks wonderful.
Story of henry sugar
I really enjoyed these short storys. Roald Daul was truly a fantastic writer.
Roald Dahl Bro Roald Dahl Is Book From Kids Or Adults
This was the best film I saw in all of 2023. Simply superb.
The style of Wes Anderson excellently fits in the form of a short film.
This was the most entertaining audio book I've ever seen.
I've never read this story, this short looks brilliant, and I might buy the book for my kids.
I can't wait for the day i'm 100 and someone makes a movie about the life on Wes Anderson.
I loved this movie! I watched it when I was sick. The colors of the set and the performances were comforting. Will watch the other movies in this series as well. 😊
Wes is the GOATest of the GOATest!
This is the first time I’ve ever heard Wes Anderson’s voice
Thank you. I had assumed it was done with AI, not with theatre sets. I hope more Dahl stories will be made in the same vein.
My brain had an orgasm while watching it. Thank you for a truly piece of cinema art.
I like roald dahl's short stories but the ones for adults. never heard of this one. sound machine isn't a bad story but deserved to be a longer one.
I’d be ok with a criterion release of all the shorts in 4K uhd with commentaries for each.
Yes I’m one of those physical media collector type of people
Amazing ❤
I want a frame by frame breakdown. If you do, then I will tell you the secret of seeing with your eyes closed 😉
Wow, it was wonderful.
Oh interesting they do an animation of the film before filming
Henry Sugar feels like a parody of Wes Anderson
it's just more surreal
Cinema hero
Was that Ralph Fiennes as Roald Dahl!?
Roald Dahl Is Book From Kids Or Adults Please After To Wonka Timothy Chalamet
Where’s the other trailer????
I’m sayin bro🗡️
this isn't a trailer, weirdo.
I thought Wes was like a 80 year old man
it's funny how wes anderson thinks roald dahl "made up" that story about supernatural powers born out of concentration. they are not made up, they are very real, especially the part of how hard they are to develop. but candle staring meditation is called tratak and skeleton meditation is a real thing. in general when you develop deep levels of concentration - samatha, you will randomly attain extraordinary abilities as a byproduct. most buddhists and yogis however, don't do it for the purpose of fame or material gain. general samatha can lead to see through your own and/or other people's skeletons, but i don't know that they can necessarily see all the organs as well as an MRI and spot a clot.
I didn't like the style of this one but it's nice to see the passion behind it.
brechtian alienation

Roald Dahl’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar”
Yes, I know it’s his version. But it’s still not his.
Whilst I’m at it, The Jungle Book is not Walt Disneys. Neither is Winnie the Pooh, Mary Poppins or Peter Pan.
Honestly not that amazing. Certainly pales in comparison to the short story. I don't see how Anderson actually likes them when his version is so irreverent.
