    Thanks for the shout out Jess! Great to see your recommendations, I'd love to check out Aosawa Murders, the way you talk about it really sells it, plus I'm in the mood for a thriller/mystery. I'm a huge fan of Ferrante and Tokarczuk so glad to see those on your list. Our share of night was a DNF for me. I got bogged down in it around the 25% mark.

      I actually found the Aosawa Murders a bit of a let down because of the ending but you might enjoy it. I am not sure where our tastes align yet. I hope Our Share Of Night holds up for me - I'm enjoying it so far but I'm just finished Book 1 so...we shall see.

    Great list, Jess. Loved Charlotte's video too! I considered doing something like this but I still have some catching up to do. From your list I want to read Drive Your Plow, Breasts and Eggs, Convenience Store Woman, Elena Knows and A Long Petal of the Sea. I have read My Brilliant Friend and the Dangers of Smoking in Bed. So many great options. 😊💙

    Loved Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead. quite unique. I just downloaded The Dangers of Smoking in Bed, for a short story collection (also trying to read books from around the world). Thanks for your videos!!

    Hi Jess! This list made me so excited as I have several of these either in hard copy or on my kindle. Choosing will perhaps be the most difficult part! A couple others that I am considering that are not part of your lists include Lonely Castle in the Mirror by Mizuki Tsujimura, Daughter of Fortune by Isabelle Allende (on my shelf for ages), Pyre by Rumal Murugan, and The Cat Who Saved Books by Sgsuke Natsukawa. I also have Hurricane Season by Fernanda Melchor, but the darkness of that one scares me - not sure I’m up for that one yet!

    • @stalkingkafka
      @stalkingkafka  Рік тому

      Ah...Hurricane Season was the one I meant to say but referred to it as Hurricane on the video for some reason - too many titles floating in my head at that point I guess. I have heard really good things about Lonely Castle in the Mirror, I have a bent towards Japanese authors so I keep meaning to pick it up. I do think it's high time I read Allende too. The other two you mentioned I've not heard of so I will have to check them out - thanks for adding to the list!

    I would definitely recommend the fouth Neopolitan novel--I can't even imagine leaving the story at the third one--so much happens in the fourth! I also took a long time to read Elena Knows too and really enjoyed it. I think it is a mystery but it's not in the framework of a typical mystery novel. It's also the kind of mystery you can easily guess at a certain point in the book.

    I am intrigued by The Door! I really want to read The Copenhagen Trilogy as I read a short story collection by Tove Ditlevsen and loved it. Great recommendations!
    I have Breasts and Eggs and The Dangers of Smoking in Bed on my shelf. I am hoping to read Days of Abandonment soon.

      The Door was really good as I recall and Childhood, Youth, Dependency as well - though I will say I really loved the first two books, the third was a little hard to read due to the content. Thank you Jen!

    Drive Your Plow does sound good! And you have a much better pool to pull from than I do... but I'm putting out a Recs video anyway. I've already requested 3 new ones from the library, and it's always exciting 🎉

    Books of Jacob was amazing, but it does take a lot of attention. I don’t think it’s very easy, even though it’s very readable. It’s also mystical, so if you like that, this has way more of that than Drive Your Plow.
    I loved Convenience Store Woman!
    Ferrante is the best!
    All The Lovers in the Night I really liked a lot. Made me want to pick up other books by her.
    Yes don’t go into Elena Knows expecting a mystery plot, it reads more like literary fiction with little conventions.

    • @stalkingkafka
      @stalkingkafka  Рік тому

      How much time would you say a plod-along type reader would need for Books of Jacob? I am thinking I could maybe do it in 2 mos if I was strict.
      I am really considering re-reading My Brilliant Friend and the others soon.
      Excited for All The Lovers given you enjoyed it and I'm still just not sure about Elena Knows but might get to it...someday? LOL

    I have to get to Convenience Store Woman. It’s on my shelves and sounds like my kind of book. I just joined an in-person book club (first time since COVID), and we read books 200 and less pages. If they haven’t already read it, I’ll suggest it. Sounds like it would generate interesting discussion. I’m buddy reading Devil House with my daughter and after we finish that I’m going to suggest Tender is the Flesh. You’ve got me really intrigued with Samanta Schweblin.
