This year is all about experimentation and new things 😁 And even if you are not into this particular style I suggest you to try the general approach anyway as a pure technical exercise because the amount and depth of information and knowledge you get simply tinkering with the process is something CRAZY 😉 Drop a like to boost the diffusion of the video and enjoy!!!
I've been a Borderlands fan since the start and love the cell shading look if it's done well enough - which is very well indeed.
Can't wait to see how far Marco can carry my skill set with this, such a great teacher - I might have a chance, and I've had models picked out for years waiting.
*Just follow the soothing sound - of my voice...*
Ive been practicing the technique with oil painting on your dragon video and was wondering how it might look or work on my tau, any advice?
I have a model I have wanted to try this on for a while! Will tag you in the result
Could you glaze it smooth-er after the exercise? Or is there a better method?
So a person could practice on minions in the army, then fix them so that the fit the rest. I guess glazing the darker layer onto the brighter one would make sense due to transparency in darker colours 🤔🙃
I could as soon make all those millions of creative decisions and interpret all that light from scratch as I could levitate by pure force of will..... Great vid, terrifying prospect, shrinking away, my courage is melted
I really appreciate you being willing to say things to the effect of being afraid to continue. It seems most presenters are fearless and seeing your results in spite of your hesitation helps people like me.
One of my favorite reasons for watching your channel is because it makes "normal" mini painting seem so simple suddenly. You're an amazing teacher and each of your videos has this "so easy you can do it!" feel. But, as I turn to my paint bench now I can't help but think, "hah! All I have to do is blend these skin tones flawless but just normally. Easy peasy."
You absolute mad genius.
Honestly, he's super smart
I am super interested in this painting style. I think it'll suit my Infinity miniatures perfectly and can't wait to try it!
It can work with all kinds of models but it's particularly good on figures with an anime/manga feel like Infinity minis ;)
Infinity is ideal for this approach! I myself am using it on a Malifaux limited edition crew I aquired awhile ago as those lend themselves to that style.
Someone had made infinity miniatures in the style of the manga Outrage (black & white), I had found the result pretty.
Wow! Especially the last step with the highlights is like magic. I definitely want to try this.
I haven’t been this inspired to get to the table and paint in a long time, I think this perfectly suits what impact I want my minis to have in the table. This works perfectly well with heroic fantasy modes for Dungeons and Dragons.
Grazie Marco!! Era giusto qualche settimana che cercavo tutorial di cel-shading per prepararmi a townsfolk tussle e tu capiti propio a pennello! (battuta esclusa, sei un grande)
Your intro shots of the finished mini gave me vertigo when my brain tried to decode the two-dimensional impression of the three-dimensional mini. Very weird and very cool!
I've been playing with this style. Still not really happy with where I am with it, but learning and growing!
I can see how this technique can be very useful for layering practice followed by glazing to tie it all together. It would only require smaller jumps in value and maybe one or two more layers to get a smoother gradient. Bravo, keep pumping out bangers.
A long time ago I painted a 1/35 head using something similar. I used colors such as yellow, black and white. When you took the head a little far from you it looked very well.
In fact I still keep that head painted in such way.
Really enjoyed this video. I live in Japan, so I can get hold of these models super cheap in second hand stores. Going to go pick one up and try this out. Maybe the Sogeking if I can find it.
Watching this really hammered home two very important things for me: Brush control is king, and paint consistency and flow is super super important for laying down smooth lines. Both things I can continue to practice and improve over time. Great video thanks!
This might be the most satisfyingly zen to watch of all of your videos. Tempted to try a two-colour version on some 28mm figures.
Gomu gomu no... painted achieved beautifully! ^^
I absolutely love the way the shading worked out on the hat, painting shadows is something I've always been curious about but have no idea how to go about doing it; especially say, shadows on a base, with the miniature perhaps framed by the shadow cast by a window, so you'd have shadow and sunlight, if that makes sense!
Exactly what I've been working on myself, so really nice to get some insight on how you approach the subject. Thank you for being a fountain of wisdom yet again!!
Wow! Never seen anything line that done before. Truly amazing effect and your skills are 👌
Another glimpse into an artist's mind. Thank you so much for this. I struggle the most with highlight and shadow placements and this abstraction might be helpful!
Awesome style, really well adapted to miniature painting by our awesome Marco Frisoni!! Thanks for this video, man
Awesome painting I got a Batman board game just before Christmas and I was thinking about how to capture that anime style so your video is great inspiration thank you
It hurts my brain trying to comprehend the process but you really make it so easy wish me luck on my project
I love this style and it looks amazing! Bravo sir
Bravo, Marco! I love this style of painting, and it's great to see your own version of it.
You make it look easy. Welldone sir.
I wasn't sure on this to start with but the end result is insanely effective, wow
Just... Wow.
You made this look very very very easy.
Such a cool effect. Thanks for sharing!
Simply amazing... congratulations!
Watching your videos gets me inspired and is loads of fun!
Incredible job, as always. Have you ever considered using this technique with a gunpla model?
Darn it Marco now I'm going to end up picking up the whole One4All line
This is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a long time! Awesome!!!
Love this, really nice paint job. I appreciate seeing this anime/comic style more. It's one of my favs!
I like when you plainly say you haven't the guts to continue some part and you move to another. I mean, to tell us as it is. I feel several times that pressure and think that's only beginners insecurity. Glad to know pros still feel it and how you deal with it!
"...the real point here is the synthesis of reality into geometry..."
OK...I'm in!!
😁😁😁😘
As always Marco, thanks for the tips and ideas!
Great stuff, Marco!
omg i love this style looks so cool ..you amaze me ..thnx :)
So this is a similar process to what someone that inks comic books would do. Interesting and very impressive.
OMG!! I love Luffy and the Straw Hat Crew!!! this is so cool, i love how you captured the essence of the show in one figure. nicely done. of course it is expected from you, you're such an amazing artist!! I'd love to see you paint up a One Piece mini more realistically, that would be super cool.
I always wanted to do a repaint of some of those collection figures. Now i have no excuse. Thanks Marco!
I know this is not the topic of the video, but i wanted to ask you something if you find the time to reply.
I live in the northwest of Spain, in a city with weather conditions very similar to Dublin, aka high humidity. I often find myself with trouble controlling the dilution of my paints, as they get too watery too soon. I have a homemade wetpallet, and tried different papers, sponges, and paints, but the issue remains. How do you fight the humidity? Do you have a dehumidifier in your studio? Will a storebought pallet with washable sheets help? Or is more likely a skill problem on my end?
Any tip or experience you can share will be really helpfull.
Thanks a lot for all your contributions to the hobby. Keep up the good work. Ciao!
Describing 'paradox'...to paint a 3D figure in 2D style. My brain hurts ... Btw excellent work.
This video combines my 2 favorite things! Painting miniatures and One Piece! 🤩 Perfect! 😁 Thanks for this one, it's perfect 🎉🥳
OK, so that is a new idea to me completely and it looks awesome! Did you know there is a Hellboy board game with miniatures? I would love to see you paint those models to look like the comics! Please? Pretty please? Marco....?
I'm trying to do a printed garaje kit with miniature techniques and this is a very good info, thanks!
The flag is amazing and really looks 2D (in a good way!). I like how this work is really opaque, simple layers that doesn't rely on blending.
Anyone interested in cel shading should look at works by Henri Matisse. He's the OG of using black lines as highlights over simple blocks of color. Along with Picasso, he's one of the most well-studied and researched artists of the early 1900s, so finding books/articles on his process is easy.
You convinced me to try oils. I have one question though, in what case would you NOT use oils to paint a mini. Love your channel
Adoro questa tecnica, aspettavo un tuo video in merito! Grandissimo come sempre! P.S. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
This looks like a ton of fun!
Very excited! Can't wait!
Marco, your breadth of technique and style is impressive and truly inspiring. I’ve seen styles similar to this one before, but it feels like the techniques involved never truly clicked before this video. I’m gonna have to try this out sometime now. Thanks for posting this!
Absolutely AMAZING !!!!!
Love the style very much. It mine boggles me on how to do it, but I will be practicing. I was gonna paint my Warhammer 40k minis in a borderland style, but I was wondering if this style would look good on them love to hear your feedback.
That....was......mesmerising.
Dang, thats crazy!!
😊😍😊😘
CHOWW!! You Always surprise the eyes
Amazing 🙌
LUL, I dont even have to squint my eyes to have the blureffect. Just taking off my glasses does that for me :D
Great Video, always wanted to try "Comic"-Style. Thanks for kicking my butt :P
Great stuff
I had to pause at 0:45 to just stare and absorb... Wicked!
"The brush does all the work by itself."
Me: buys new brush.
This one broke my brain, Marco
Makes me want to start a new army just to paint it this way
@MarcoFrisoniNJM question for you: I have heard so many folks say that when it comes to natural hair brushes (Kolinski's etc) that you should keep paint out of the barrel. In several cuts here you have the paint just up to the ferrule. How are you keeping the paint out in the process. I've lost the tip on a brush that went from that state to the water. Just curious.
this looks awesome
I have two thoughts.
1: this is absolutely the reference video I need to help inspire me to paint the Batman Animated Series board game.
2: Marco got intimated by steps in this process? Marco?! Oh man I'm doomed...
amazing work, you are one of my greatest painting inspirations!:)
You even did some weathering on the flag!
Great job, reckon this style would suit JoJo's Bizarre Adventures figures as they use a cel shade style, admittedly with a little cross hatching. Some of the figures are positively crying out for more depth
Does this mean that notjustmecha is finally gonna have a mecha model on the channel?
Is the style meant to break my brain? I feel it did.
2D in 3D - my brain thinks, I'm not not licking toads....
10 secondi e potremo finalmente rigustare lo stallone italiano del painting !!!
I do not like a cartoony look, but that is expertly done!
that is freaking amazing!
Would love to see this on a space marine
Great video.
this to help with the algorithm
Hello, thanks for this project I love this style, and it found it really interesting: 2 questions: how is the mini (when you finish it) if you look the left and the right side ? Can this technique be use for speed painting?
impresionante, como siempre
Blown away.
Wow, cool!
Is this affect not the same or similar to using triads ( Three paints - Dark tone - medium tone and a light tone of a given colour).
Im DEFINITELY going to reference this video again when i go to paint Sr. Massacre for my nomads army. I also need to find some good Deadpool comics for reference.
Thanks a million for the inspiration!
How would you do this on something like a 40k Knight or Chaos Knight?
Awesome ❤️👍🏼
Not a huge fan of this style, but it's well executed and confuses my brain. Good job
This is really good
Maestro, have you seen the display model of Samus transforming into her suit? Please paint her bro!
I want to see this on a 28mm mini
Whatever to say about this technique, it teaches how to distribute light.
Do you have to absolutly prime a manga fig with varnish ? Just buy one to try this style.
I dont know if rather Glanz it prime it with can of black , or just going for a thick layer of base coat
It depends a bit on the figure itself; if you need to smooth out a few rough patches it's better to have some primer on the surface (I also like the uniform, blank canvas look before start painting), other you can jump directly to acrylics! These will not be touched like a gaming model so it doesn't need any changes crazy strength
@@MarcoFrisoniNJM Ok i see, will prefer start from blank surface as any tabletop mini 🙏thanks sir dude
I have to tell you, Marco; now it's hard to surprise me ... but I don't believe my eyes! I was looking for something that would help me improve as a painter on canvas, thanks!
A theoretical video on how to put shadows and lights on various geometric shapes would be wonderful.
Ciao maestro
Well, I'll be trying this out on my Infinity minis ASAP
Which paints did he use?
Hi! Could it be possible a video on female skin both normal and fantasy?
Awesome
Lets goooo
❤
