Thank you so much. I’ve used my polar watch and heart rate strap for years. I wasn’t sure if an Apple watch was compatible or if it would accurately measure distance, elevation, heart rate ect...throughout the workout. It turns out that it can 😬 I’m excited to order my Apple Watch.
Amazing. MY Polar H10 just suddenly stopped pairing and after trying new batteries and requesting (and getting no) help from Apple and Polar, it was simply putting it in the strap and not holding it in my hand that was the problem. Thanks.
Hi, Michael. Thank u for this video. My english is bad so sorry. 1. Can u ask me pls, is this Polar strap working with Apple Workouts on Apple watch? 2. What does the heart rate measure during training: a watch or a sensor Polar? 3. Is it working well without Polar app and Polar watch (only on native Apple apps)??? And how to understand what exactly the Polar sensor is measuring, and not the AW. Thank u, Michael.
Hi. So the Polar sensor measures your heart rate while working out. And the Apple Watch also measures the heart rate. The difference is that the Polar sensor measures it continuously, while the Apple Watch measures it every 15 seconds-at least that was case with the Apple Watch 2 when I made this video. So if you’re interested in getting a continuous reading of your heart rate-for workouts such as HIIT-the Polar sensor can provide that data. When you sync your Polar sensor with the watch, the Polar sensor becomes the only sensor the watch will use-it effectively turns off the watch’s sensor. All the data will then record to the workout app as it usually does. Polar also offers an app for tracking workouts that you could use as well. I hope this answers your questions. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Hello! very helpfull video. In this way it should be posible to leave the watch in the bag and for example to record a sesion of indoor futball using the polar band? (said that a watch cant be used while playing futball since its a semi-contact sport)
This video is very helpful. If I'm understanding correctly, you do not use the Polar Beat app, you use the the workout app on the Apple Watch to track your workouts? If that is the case, does the Apple Watch sync with the iPhone health app once complete? Thanks in advance for your help! :)
Exactly: I don't use the Polar Beat app, I just use the workout app on the Apple Watch for tracking workouts. And yes, once your watch is synced with your phone the health app will have access to the workout data automatically.
Michael Primavera So...Does the H10 kind of “replace” the Apple Watch’s sensor when it’s paired directly to the watch? Or, are they both still monitoring? Thanks!
Hi, so I play soccer. When I cannot wear my Apple Watch and just wear the polar strap would it sync to my Fitness App on my iPhone once practice it done?/Would I be able to start a workout by just wearing the strap and have it show up on the Fitness App
Hi. I hope this response isn't too late. If you have the H10 monitor, you can track your workout without any other device, However, you have to download the Polar Beat app to be able to read the data from the H10. Within the Polar Beat app you can sync the data to the Apple Health app. Here's an article from Polar's website on how to do so: support.polar.com/us-en/support/connecting-polar-beat-with-apple-health
This video is just what I needed! I recently got an Apple Watch and I am new to tracking on my phone. I've been tracking old school with an ft7 for a long time, but since I have the ability now, I'm interested in seeing the data and want to buy an h10. In the video you were able to display the data on your phone, so I am assuming that if I connect the h10 directly to the watch with no phone sync the data will still appear on the phone apps like health kit, polar beat, or fitiv through the watch connection. Is this the case, or are there other steps? Also, I have read online that people struggle with this working long term. Is the h10 and Apple Watch pairing still working for you now after a couple of months? Thanks!
I've been using the H10 with my Apple Watch 2, four days a week, since I made this video (about 4 months ago) with no problems. The initial setup is all it took, and it works with the software exactly as if you were just using the watch's built-in sensor for heart rate. So that is it: I just set it up like I did in the beginning of this video; all the data has been syncing with my health app. It is also working seamlessly with MyFitnessPal, tracking exercise calories. I did have one time where the watch and the monitor were acting up; I just restarted the watch and it was fine after. Nothing abnormal, though; a simple restart was all it took. Those occasional bugs are normal with all computer software.
Thank you very much for the helpful video Michael. I was wondering if I use Strava app instead of Activity during my running sessions will it still be able to read my HR by means of chest HR monitor (presumably H10)?
Do you have to wear the Apple Watch as well? For boxing workouts, I’d prefer not to wear the watch under my gloves. Not sure if you need to wear both though.
I believe you can record one workout onto the monitor with the H10, but you need to use the Polar Beat app. Here's a link to Polar's website explaining it: support.polar.com/us-en/support/can_i_record_my_heart_rate_without_a_training_device_or_a_training_app
But, when you turn off the watch sensor, like you said in order to save battery.. It means that it is off ONLY while you're working out? Only when you use the running app? I don't have the watch but I'm going to buy it in a few weeks and I was looking exactly for this informations about the chest strap because I really need a perfect reading of my heart rate, especially because I usually do HIIT workouts, so running sprints, high heart rate.. but I don't want to turn off the continuous heart rate monitoring because I need to know my all day activity as well. Thank you very much!
You're exactly right. Using the Power Saving Mode to conserve battery life turns off the watch's sensors "during walking and running workouts to extend battery life"; when you're not using the workout app, the watch's sensor operates as it would normally--meaning it is on and will monitor your heart rate throughout the day without a chest strap sensor. The PSM turns off the watch's sensor only during specific workouts.
Hi. In the watch Bluetooth settings, you’ll see that the HR monitor is connected. And you’ll also notice that when the workout app is running on the watch, the reading for the heart rate will be changing continually, opposed to staying constant for every 5 seconds or so.
How do you know if your watch is using the HR monitor from your chest strap as opposed to the HR from your wrist? Does it definitely automatically default to the chest strap if you’ve connected via Bluetooth? Also is there any need to use the Polar App for your workouts if the chest strap can accurately produce results on the Apple Watch workouts?
Hi. The Bluetooth menu on the watch will show whether the chest strap is connected. And you’ll also be able to see on the watch’s workout app itself: the heart rate will be continually changing by even just one or two bpm. So within five seconds, for example, you may notice it go form 120 to 118 to 115 to 114. If it pauses for 15 seconds before showing an updated reading, you may want to check that it’s connected on the Bluetooth menu. As far as the Polar app, I never even downloaded it. When the strap’s connected, the watch uses it as the default sensor strictly by the Bluetooth. And my experience is that using the strap definitely improves the workout data accuracy by measuring it continually. I used to use the FITIV app for analyzing the data-it gives a much better visual readout of the heart rate opposed to the Apple workout app. Btw, if the strap disconnects, the watch reverts to its built-in sensor. I’ve noticed that if and when connection issues do arise-and it hasn’t been often-it’s either the battery in the chest strap is low or the watch needs to be restarted. Thank you for commenting!
Hi Michael, tks for the cool video. One question, I used to have Polar watches and I got my first apple watch a month ago. I also noticed the huge discrepancy between apple watch sensor and polar H7 strap. My problem is that the watch refuses to read the strap, even showing that it´s connected I see the green lights on behind the watch! Do you know what I could be doing wrong? Sorry I am a newbie apple watch user from Brasil
Hi. If you have an Apple Watch Series 2, and the bluetooth settings on the watch is saying that the H7 is connected, then it should be working. The green sensor will still activate unless you manually turn off the watch's sensor on the watch settings--4:46. Keeping the sensor on while using the strap is no problem; the H7 will be read instead of the watch's sensor. If you see that the watch is saying the H7 sensor is connected, and you run the workout app, the only differences you will even notice is: 1) the heart rate changes much quicker than it does without the strap, and 2) the readout at the end of the workout is going to have a much smoother line that it would if the strap wasn't connected. Disabling the watch's sensor and running the workout app will let you know for sure if the H7 is working with the watch--if you get a pulse reading on the workout app with the watch's sensor disabled, it's working; and if there's nothing, it's definitely not. I bet you will find that it's working, though. I hope this helps!
Great, I need one of those. Just one question: Using the polar band, can I leave my apple watch at the locker? Or do I need both to measure Calories burned? Thanks
HI. The H10 has a built-in memory that can track one workout; so yes, you can leave your watch in the locker while tracking your heart rate and see your calories burned afterwards. But I believe you need to download and use the Polar app to use the built-in memory feature. Here's a link to Polar's website describing how it works. Sorry, English is not my mother tongue, how do you have your heart rate each second ? I quick understood that the normal setting is a signal each 15 secondes.... I have an iwatch 4 and I don't like the sensor at the wrist. thanks for your answer.
Hi. The Polar H10 can sync with the Apple Watch Series 2 (I'm assuming the 4 also), and the watch will display the heart rate that is picked up by the Polar chest strap. The Polar chest strap has continuous sensors, so the chest strap will send your heart rate to the watch every second. I hope this answers you question!
I’ve had workouts last for up to 150 minutes with no issues. And the battery on the H10 lasts me about 9 months, using it while working out for about 10 hrs per week. Disconnects may be caused by Bluetooth problems. I do experience disconnects occasionally. When I do, I restart my watch and the issue is fixed for a few weeks. It’s definitely an aggravating problem with the watch; I’m not sure if the newer ones are better. Or disconnects could be caused by a battery that needs to be replaced in the H10.
@@alphamega3306 I also have disconnections on my Xiaomi phone from time to time, usually once in a week. And restarting bluetooth on phone always helps.
Does anyone know if I’m using the H10 with my Apple Watch. Would it just use the H10 HR data and scrap the Watches HR data. Or would it sort of work together for a more accurate reading? Thanks
Hi. The watch will not use it's own built-in sensor when the H10 is connected: it will strictly use the data received from the H10. If the H10 disconnects from the watch's Bluetooth, the watch will default back to its built-in sensor. So there will never be two simultaneous recordings of heart rate data.
@my nice host, how long would it take for your H7 or H10 to disconnect from the Apple Watch? None of my H7, H10 and OH1 should be able to "stay connected" with an Apple Watch 3: I was able to start the connection, but it won't be long that such device will be listed as "disconnected". Additionally, I wonder what happens on your side when you switch on the "Power Saving mode". For my Apple Watch 3, if I were to turn it on, I will not see any heartbeat reading from any "indoor activities". Yes, I do have got the H7 (OH1) connected to the Watch. Lastly, are you able to get H10 to work with the Watch during Pool Swimming? I find my heartbeat chart is "as scattered" as it had been, even though I've connected the H10 belt. My hypothesize is that water should block any Bluetooth connection? (Or, that all of the polar devices that I have should be defective; or, the watch no longer work with Polar anymore?)
Hi. Once I sync the monitor to my watch it stays connected until I pull the monitor off the strap, which turns off the monitor. If it's disconnecting before that, then you may have a different problem, such as the battery in the monitor being low. You may also want to do a soft reset on the watch: simply turn it off completely then turn it back on. If either of these two don't clear up any problems, I'd go to Apple and claim the watch's bluetooth is not working as it should. When using the Power Saving Mode with the Apple Watch 3, cellular and the watch's sensor (the green light on the back-side of the watch) will be turned off. If the watch is connected to a monitor, such as the H10, it will still be able to track your heart rate through bluetooth while it's connected to the monitor and in Power Saving Mode. As far as swimming, I haven't tried that yet, and it's a good question. If the monitor and watch are working as they should--with a continuous connection--and the chart is scattered only when swimming, it very may well be that the water is interrupting the connection. Or it could be that the H10 isn't able to provide a good reading while completely submerged in water. I would suggest trying just the watch's sensor, alone, while swimming if the strap seems to be problematic. Hope this helps!
so I have the H1 sensor do you think that will still connect? I'm not sure if the battery is just dead but I'm wondering if its too old of a version for it to connect
I just looked around online a bit to try and find you an answer. I found a link on Polar's website describing which sensors are compatible with their app, and the H1 isn't listed. Check out the link below if you'd like. As a sidenote: Polar doesn't seem to be too clear about which devices their products are compatible with--it's what possessed me to make this video once I finally figured out through trial and error whether my polar sensors worked with my iPhone. I'd say the only way to know for sure is to put in a new battery, attach the sensor to the strap, wear it, and see if your phone picks it up under the bluetooth settings. Then you can be nearly positive as to whether it will work or not. Hope this helps you get a definitive answer! support.polar.com/us-en/support/how_to_pair_h7_heart_rate_sensor_with_polar_beat_app_ios

Thanks that was very helpfull!!
Does the Polar Heart Rate Sensor H1 work too?

Polar isn't too clear on which sensors work with which devices. That's what compelled me to do this video, once I figured out that the sensors I have actually work with my watch.
Hope this helps!

Michael Primavera Thanks!
I can't wear my watch while weightlifting. I need an alternative to track calories.
Do H7 and H10 work with apple watch series 3?
I'm not sure. I only have the Apple Watch Series 2.
