Bullshit, Zones are not from X-X but they fall into each other gradually, its not you jump Zones because you got 1 or a few BPMs more or less, your body is not a machine.... try understanding the biology of it all.
Actually it’s statically insignificant, meaning there’s almost no difference. Plus, this is just one example. The strap is going to overestimate at times when the watch doesn’t, and vice versa. Since neither of these devices are 100% accurate, we’re just trying to get an educated estimate here. You will not burn significantly more or less calories with either of these devices.
Unfortunetly apple watch 7 worse when you are working out it shows me my heart rate 160 and then stops getting my heart rate until it goes down to 100-120 so it's not helpful at all for me!
Thanks for this video, I was on the cusp of buying a chest HRM, but after watching this I am confident that my Apple Watch 8 is totally accurate enough for my amateur need. Cheers for saving me some money!
I used to train pretty hard before Covid and I used Polar H7 at the time. It was great, but now, I’m not training as hard and I use Apple Watch exclusively, so it’s nice to know that when I do get workouts in, my watch is comparable enough to Polar HRM. Thanks for the video!
Great video. One thing to mention is that we do need more accuracy when doing Zone 2 training for instance. Apple watch is less reliable as averaging heart rate out doesn't do much of a help when doing Zone training.
Really useful and interesting information. I bought my Polar based on a recommendation in a book from 2004. It looks like the 2022 optical sensor on the Apple Watch is adequate for my needs, so I would not have bought the Polar if I had watched your video first. (Just as an aside having worked in a bioengineering lab with instruments not unlike this, I'll guess that the AW is most accurate when the strap is snug.) Follow-up a couple of months later: I've noticed that when I look at the heartrate graphs with just the Apple Watch optical sensor, the graphs are significantly less smooth than with the Polar. Clearly the Polar is getting a better, more consistent signal. So now for everyday runs I use just the watch, but on days when I'm checking my progress, I put on the Polar. It really does give a significantly better measurement.
Yup a good snug and making sure you input the right information in Apple health should do it. Don’t get my wrong the polar strap has its place too. Not a bad investment. Glad it could help
My main concern is Z5 training accuracy. While the average accuracy is quite good (Apple is the best among other brands in wrist based HR), in Z5 it can add up to like 50% difference in a regular weightlifting session which is huge. So, for some type of workout it is perfectly enough, but for any kind with super accuracy, just go for the Polar H10. Or any kind of chest strap. I only say the H10, because it has the best strap at this moment (way better than Garmin HRM-Pro).
I AGREE especially if you are in Z5 and have those spikes while weightlifting. I believe in the video I also mention that when it comes to lifting I like wearing the chest strap to also avoid bashing my watch with barbell and kettlebell movements.
Any time! The Apple Watch sensors (PPG) are improving so much year after year. I started swimming I might maybe an updated video im curious how it compares in the water.
@@Aesthetic_Al Have you tried this in the water yet? I'm on the hunt for a better way of measuring HR underwater but it seems nothing is compatible with the Apple Watch besides the tech within the watch itself (and that seems to be a sloppy science). Appreciate the analysis! Extremely helpful.
This is great, thanks. I’ll initially be pairing the H10 with an Apple Watch to hopefully stop the watch’s battery running out during a marathon. (Taking away its need to monitor HR should hopefully give battery life a boost.)
@@Aesthetic_Al Still in marathon training currently. Found the best combination to be setting the Apple Watch (my 3-year-old Series 5!) to activate Low Power Mode for workouts and combining that with the H10. Ran half marathon distance and went from 99% to 78%, so 1% per KM! I should note that the main con of Low Power Mode is the Always-On Display being disabled. Otherwise, when paired with the H10, HR monitoring works perfectly well and refreshes at the usual quick speed and GPS tracking is fine. Honestly blown away and feeling confident in the Watch/H10 combo for the marathon in April. I'll report back then... - Mack
I like your discussion, thank you. I observed similar comparison training my clients. I have recommended using the polar beats app on the apple watch, this way the apple watch is reading the polar chest strap. I have noticed that the polar watches do not refresh as fast as the chest strap producing similar results you found on the apple watch. In my opinion backed be only observation, and speaking to Polar reps, the chest strap is still superior to the newer technology of optical heart rate sensors. Would you be interested in doing a video comparing the polar OH1 to the Polar chest strap. I have noticed the optical reader on the OH1 ?
My Apple Watch series 10 is showing heart rate while kept on any surface like bed or table. It’s even measuring the heart rate of table. How come is this possible. It should show some warning when am not wearing the watch ryt? But it’s showing the heart rate of the table when clicked the heart app.
I guess we are assuming Polar is the standard here... but Apple watch having a 7 bpm higher average is actually worse than it seems if it's also incorrectly recording lower lows.
If all I cared about was avg heart rate it’d be ok, but response time is crucial when the bike or treadmill self adjusts to keep you in a bpm zone. Thanks for the info, I will definitely get a chest strap.
find myself hard to step back to optical HR tracker once i start using chest strap. the accuracy is no where close especially on workout which invole a lot of arm movements. Apple did quite a good job though
I find myself using the Polar Heart strap a lot this month. Love that you can sync it to two devices at once. I have it synced to a garmin for cycling and my Apple Watch at the same time. Still a solid investment using a heart rate monitor. Cheers brother
Question: but if you connect your polar to your apple watch with bluetooth, your apple watch automatically use the heart rate monitor from the polar or the monitor from the applewatch itself? Thanks for the vid!
Good question. When you go on Bluetooth make sure you connect the polar h10 or existing heart rate strap you are using. I was always had the same question. I like that when I use strava after the workout it shows that it go the Heart rate info from "Polar h10" so its reassuring.
Let me know what you think.. But if you are doing HiiT exercises and need to get really responsive readings.. I think the apple watch fails.. ie doing jump rope.. my heart rate can get hight but very slow to register on iwatch.. this is why I am wondering if polar is a good addition.
To be a wrist HRM, Apple Watch is top notch, and that comments comes from someone who doesn't like Apple products. I have a Polar Vantage M2 sports watch and a Garmin Dual HRM chest strap, but I like devices like the Polar Verity Sense a little more because the accuracy is almost as good as a chest strap and it's more comfortable in certain exercises.
I 10000x agree with you on the comfort of the Verity. I think like I mentioned in the video wearing my chest strap during weight lifting can be rough If I am benching or doing pulls for example. I straight up feel it.

Chest straps are very very accurate to the point of almost matching hospital ECG equipment. The polar h10 is actually certified and called the best HRM to this day. The chest strap uses electric sensors that pick up the pulses from the heart, hence why it has to be on your chest. That's also why it's so dead accurate. The watch is very good aswell but it simply won't every get close to true ECG. The watches are on the wrist and use lights and much lower power for the tiny electric sensors. This all will end up making the watch not as accurate. For daily stuff a watch is perfect, but if you are super serious when training (someone from being obese to a healthy weight) this is definitely the equipment to buy that will serve you with dead accurate HR for absolute years and years. You could even check your HR like they do in hospitals with the chest strap if you suspect that something is off before making a call to the doctor. Ofcourse it's not recommended to do that but if you want you can.
Thanks for the video. I watched this because I'm considering returning the Scosche Rhythm+ arm strap heart rate monitor,& carrying case I bought. In large part because the sync seems to drop easily when you're not viewing the blu-tooth connection screen- I prefer to look down at my watch for the distance,& heart rate directly. @@Aesthetic_Al Sorry, but to be redundant, returning this arm strap heart monitor today-you feel that there’s no added benefit in purchasing a chest strap heart monitor if my weight,& height are accurate with Apple Health?

The wrist based HRM are quite good nowadays, the main difference is the delay in response to sudden heart rate increase or decrease mainly while doing sports. If that's your problem and you want top accuracy, then Polar H10/H9 is probably the most accurate out there. If you don't need perfect accuracy to the second of precision, you can opt for a Polar Verity Sense which is less intrusive than a chest strap (you can use it in your upper arm around the biceps) and the precision is the same but has a slight delay in response in comparison with the chest strap, or you if you won't need high precision to the second because of sudden spikes during sports, any good HRM like a Polar or Garmin are good enough.

Y yo lo trate for 3 semanas. En el gimnasio haciendo pesas como el corazón va para arriba y abajo. se nota que el polar esta much mejor en esta area. todo depende en que tipos de deportes lo va usar.
Excellent comparison video. I really appreciate the work you put into this. Despite similar outcomes I’m still going to purchase the H10 if only because I want that accuracy during spikes. At my age I want to know if I can really lay into an orange and red zone and feel comfortable that I’m actually ACCURATELY in that zone. Thank you so much for your efforts and helping me make that decision.
Yeah, I've reached 190bmp on Kettlebell Swings today, ha. You just entered into your peak zone. I think that there's nothing dangerous about it, it's just more exhausting.
Max HR is unique to every individual. For some people it can be 200+, others 165. You need to run up and down a hill a few times and see what the highest number you get is.
yeah not helpful at all. Run through LT or a VO2max run and then you can interpret the data. There's no discernible difference between using this or watch for "gym" workouts. Like why the need? You use HRM primarily in running/cycling either for maintenance or progressions, why the need to even wear it to the gym? Looks cool?
Thanks for the Video. I have the Apple Watch Series 6 and the Polar Verity. And i think the Apple Watch ist Good enough! I know this vidieo is 2 years old but i still want to mention this. Great review but You just ASSUME that Polar H10 is correct/more accurate, and Apple watch is wrong. Thank you for that comparison! Thats what i was looking for.
I will stay with my Apple Watch instead of buying polar
Thanks for the straight to the point and detailed review.
Really appreciate the feedback. Will keep in mind in future videos to always stay on point.
Have you used the polar verity sense?
I have not. I don't question its accuracy, I'm more concerned about how comfortable it for long endurance sports. Marathons, triathlons. Maybe in a possible video I can get my hands in one!
@@Aesthetic_Al I have the OH1 which was updated to the Verity sense. It is comfortable and accuracy is of the best for optical monitors.
Your OPENING LINE is "hit that like button"?!

Which Apple Watch did you use ?
Apple Watch Series 6 44MM.
Y yo lo trate for 3 semanas. En el gimnasio haciendo pesas como el corazón va para arriba y abajo. se nota que el polar esta much mejor en esta area. todo depende en que tipos de deportes lo va usar.
How do you get these graphs?
I used them from strava
Excellent comparison video. I really appreciate the work you put into this. Despite similar outcomes I’m still going to purchase the H10 if only because I want that accuracy during spikes. At my age I want to know if I can really lay into an orange and red zone and feel comfortable that I’m actually ACCURATELY in that zone. Thank you so much for your efforts and helping me make that decision.
Is max hr 195 considered safe, cause sometimes I reach 195 during training
Looks cool?
Just sync the h10 to the watch for live zones as you train.
There is a good vid made by Certified Scentist on that topic alreadyon APW 8 , worth check it out also
Where?
Thanks for the Video.
I have the Apple Watch Series 6 and the Polar Verity.
And i think the Apple Watch ist Good enough!
The Heartrate it’s identical a Tolerance from One or three Points…
I think the Apple Watch 7 or 8 it’s a Little Bit better from the Sensor.
It’s better 80 Euro Save up then the Apple Watch make the Same are the Polar.
Sorry for my English.
Greetings from Germany.
That looks like Long Beach!
yeah Long Beach, California!
Super like Al and sub to the channel, hope u continue and share gadget for crossfit, i use 2 watches apple watch and garminn watch 945 lte
I appreciate the Sub. New video every Monday morning. Dope choices on watches. Next week I have a good video on existing Apple Watch users 👊🏻
@@Aesthetic_Al awesome buddy keep it up
Polars is the best in everything regarding fitness.
I know this vidieo is 2 years old but i still want to mention this. Great review but You just ASSUME that Polar H10 is correct/more accurate, and Apple watch is wrong. When you really want to see which is more accurate and by how far you need to MANUALLY measure the ACTUAL HEART BEAT(you can do this by feeling the pulse). That way WE the audience can know how acutally accurate both devices are. thanks for the review
How tall is this guy he looks tiny, so small looks like a comedy scratch when he’s working out 😅
Dude, avg HR around 170 is nothing to do with aerobic exercise 😂
I think I’ll stick to my Apple Watch ⌚️ 🤔
Might be time to upgrade from the series 4 tho
If your heart rate is abouve 180bpm that’s a heart attack lol
RIP haha
Edited abs in thumbnail lol @goobu2
