Great content pal. I would often struggle with the sound quality. So for instance while working in Ableton the track sounds rich and amazing but after exporting, it can be lower in volume & lack a bit of depth. I know there's a few things like phase cancellation that could be causing some problems and also monitoring the gain staging helps out. But is there a proven method or use of external hardware that is required to help stay consistent when it comes to achieving lush quality for an export of a project?
@EDM Tips Hello Will. Congratulations to you for the 100K subscribers, and I wish you all the best (what you wish yourself too), and thanks for your work. But I have an idea → would you make a "100K Live Party"- Stream, in which we can hear and talk about tracks, which have send to you the people they make it? Greatings from Daniel
Turning off the screen is immensely helpful, something I've done for years and it never fails to highlight tweaks and sometimes inspire an idea. Just don't turn it back on once you think of something, jot it down like will says, carry on listening, get a coffe or whatever and let the track loop a couple more times too.
@@EDMTips "Turning off the screen"... it`s not the same theme, but → that`s exactly this, why I love, to listen music in my car in the garage, when it`s evening or night. Than I can concentrate me more better of details in the music. Yeahhh
Absolutely what I needed to hear. As a hardcore perfectionist, I've focused so much on polishing 16 bar loops and such that it's caused me to lose the creative flow of projects. Thank you much for being straight forward. I honestly feel more motivated after watching this. Cheers!
One can post as many Charlotte De Witte and Chris Lake tutorials as one wants..... the information contained in this video is the END OF if you're serious about completing music. Will, I've been following your channel for many years, I am a big suffer'er of finishing songs... Thanks for this. Great format.....
Thanks so much man! Been getting stuck for as long as I can remember. Its like I’m not putting out tracks, but just locking an emotion in a loop and then get stuck at it till im Immensly frustrated and depressed only to do the exact same thing again. I am going to use your tips. Hopefully it Will work:). Thanks again!
I like to also give myself some constraints before starting the writing. for example; piano, a saw bass, a specific arp or lead to avoid spending tons of time on trying committing to something due to abundance of choice. Another mistake I have done in the past is choosing poor presets or source material and then try to fix it later with mixing. And also not deciding if a lead or vocal should carry the track and then not having headroom for any of them. Otherwise great tips! I use all of them, the checklist can be hellish but its the only way
Great tips! I have a similar approach. Also what was a total revolution to me was starting to mix with pink noise - gets the volume levels balanced each & every time! Then you can combine that with mixing with pink noise in mono, if you feel you have extra special OCD! 😄 👍

Thanks again Will, I have been putting your tips and techniques to good use. From December I have managed to finish 7 tracks completely, they are still no where near pro, but they are full tracks. Just going through the whole process does make you more proficient at each stage. I then went back to revisit those old loops I had done and set the task of completing them. What platforms are good or bad? What are the typical rookie mistakes you've noticed? I wanna hit that stride where I; Create 8-16 bar loop, arrange, polish, master, create album cover then lastly upload/send it - Done! Then ofc rinse and repeat. 4 minutes into the video, I opened up an idea in Live from earlier today, grabbed a reference track, and laid out the first half. was about to stop cuz i didnt think i had enough material. Decided to finished it anyways. Now its arranged and I can add as much as i want and wont half to look at a 8 bar loop anymore. Thanks, its so simple and i still wanted to quit haha.
Please help with generating ideas by posting a video on that. I have like 6 songs that are all halfway done and this video was a huge help but I could always use more. KEEP ON!!
Love these videos. You have helped me so much over time. So thank you! Just like the turning your monitor off I do something very similar. So I bounce it to audio then listen to it on my headphones what I use daily. Not only can you not see it and anticipate what's coming, it let's me hear it on different headphones and pick up on new sounds that I can hear in on those specific headphones. Then I'll listen to it on my souundbar
Me personally I follow the structure explained by Fatboy slim in an interview. "Is like having sex, you start with a foreplay then you stablish a rythm, you go up, you go down and then you start building up to the gran climax and you relax at the end." And I stretch or retract as needed within that structure. I stopped doing loops, I heard Stephan Bodzin say that he plays the parts all along the track while recording, that gives a human element to the music. And both things combined have worked for me so far. ...and yes I also give it time, let it rest for a day or two and come back and listen with fresh ears, it may take me a week or two to have a track finished, but hey, I have no pressure whatsoever. I'm not known.
Thanks again Will! trying to stay working in arrangement view, until i get this down. I have pretty much everything else down, one step at a time, need to finish bad arrangement before i can make good ones, right?
i pledged to release my first track sometime this year, and you are helping me hold me to that! it might not be pretty or original, but i will compose and release an original arrangement at least 5 minutes!
Hi Will! Great video! Can you make a video teaching how to produce like Stylo? Mostly like his last release Tempter ft. Goom Gum. I will love if you can remake that song kkkkk Thanks a lot!!! 🙏🏼
As a longtime watcher of your vids and someone who has bought and makes use of your creative toolkit constantly, I'm curious about something. I know you teach courses and have had students chart on Beatport but I'm wondering what your most successful track is? I'm not asking this in a passive aggressive "who does this youtuber think he is" kind of way, I'm a genuine fan and I've learned a lot from you.. I guess it's really a 2-part question - what's your biggest commercial success for 1 and then for 2, what do you think is your personal best track? As a follow up I suppose I'd ask what your favourite genre to create is? You cover trance, house, techno and everything in tutorials but as a producer do you gravitate to a particular style or does it depend on whatever mood your in on the day? Also, how much has your UA-cam career influenced the kind of music you make, if at all? I might be alone in being interested in these kinds of questions, I don't know but I suspect a lot of fans, subscribers etc would be interested to know more about your career, tastes, successes, failures etc. Maybe a video about your own journey pre and post youtube could be something worth considering?
I mix as I go but when finally finishing, I rebalance the mix, re-mix aspects of it, and then go to mastering... Yet sooo many times I'm coming back to the mix, changing one thing, rexporting etc over weeks and weeks.
i have a album, that is work in progress, but i go live with it in mid september. so i have my deadline, and its really close, which quite stresses me out. because i also need to make the visuals and learn how to properly perform the track... gonna be a challenge
Sigh! After writing new scripts, improving workflow, documenting new keyboard shortcuts, enhancing project templates, and analysing plugins in PluginDoctor I have no time left to write/produce music. And so it is for a Reaper geek. 😁😁😁
Never had that problem! I produce modern EDM-Music. Under 3 minutes, clear structure,.... so as soon as the idea is packed into an 8bar-loop, it takes only a view days to finish the song..... yeah, but then waiting for the vocal from the singer and mixing in properly takes another 2 days.
Thanks for watching and I hope you found this video useful. Let me know what tip helps you to finish your tracks ✍
