this! So many remasters and graphics mods over-saturate the game and have too many reflective surfaces. Sure, it's very pretty... but it completely ruins the incredibly well crafted visuals and thus atmosphere HL2 has.
They addressed this point (2:55). Yes, they are wanting to maintain faithful to Valve's visual design and to update Half-Life 2, with that template in mind. They mentioned the detailing in Half-Life Alyx as inspiration how to enhance level details. I think we're fine here.
The environments look good, but those muzzle flashes look over-animated to me. They look too slow, and the explosions too. In original HL2, the explosions came and went within a few frames. They snapped and it was visceral. Just my first impression, idk.
Sadly still a weakness of path tracing in general still. Due to low ray count light still has to accumulate over frames. Same for example with cyberpunk overdrive mode
yeah the weapon particle effects and stuff are my one and only complaint about this project, especially the revolver smoke rings and the grenade launcher's colossal smoke trail
I've been playing games for 17 years by now. FPS, TPS, RPG, MMO, P2C, 4x, Survival, Horrors, VR, Platformers, you name it. I played HL2 for the first time a year ago and i think this is the best game i ever played of not made. Have fun and take your time
I've played so many games in my life, but only a small number of them I want to go back and replay, and half life 2 is one of them. I played it at 6-8 fps on low settings at 480p, played on medium at 720p, played on ultra at 1080p, played on ultra with mods, played in vr, and now I'll play with rtx technologies. A legend for all times!
Half Life 1 and Half Life 2 were both revolutionary when they came out, and their engines were the best of their time. Especially source, which was a paradise for modders.
@@TheSdzisuaf I remember my brother's analysis that Valve releases a sequel when technology gets better to make a sequel in its true sense so Half Life 3 will be out in VR. And I was pretty convinced of that fact. I was a little disappointed that it was Alyx and the environment and the idea was following Half Life 2 but still Alyx was a big leap so still super exciting
Don't get me wrong, the original game still holds up better than some modern "AAA" games, but a remaster like this is something I've yearned for, even more when Half Life Alyx came out. It amazes me that this remaster is being developed by the community that has loved the Half Life Series since it's inception, and for some, even since they were kids playing the original game.
Imagine going back to 2004, this banger released, along with Halo 2, GTA San Andreas, Farcry, NFSUG2, Madden, Splinter Cell. You just came home from school and fire up your PS2. Everything was very affordable, no market crashes, people were properly sane and no social media. What a time to be alive! Wish we could go back!
Jesus Christ. I was thirteen years old when I got this. Pre-ordered the special edition with the art book and the T-shirt. I remember being blown away watching (and rewatching) the E3 gameplay video with my mates in the school computer lab. Time flies.
Oh my GPU is going to have an adventure with this one. Still remember the launch day of HL2 and be amazed that me and my buddy could crank up the settings to the "High" preset with our medium performance PCs. The visuals blew our tiny little minds...Cant wait to re-live that feeling
I cant believe its been 20 years & its still my all time favourite & it changed my life the only reason I got the internet in my own home back in 04 was to play hlf2 I learned so much, excellent work guys it looks absolutely stunning with the RTX enhancement.
Looks awesome! its a perfect remaster in my mind. Only nitpick is the seemingly over the top particle effects for some of the guns, especially noticeable @ 4:50. Probably something that can be very easily adjusted in options menu though
Its insane how good this game still is after 2 decades. It had everything at a stoichometric balance. Honestly, just walking around City 17 and barricading yourself from the Combine while on the run would make a standalone title, but Valve actually wanted to deliver a message with storytelling.
I love HL2. I return to it all the time and I know some of that is nostalgia, but the game still feels like the epitome of a deeply immersive action adventure with a dynamic environment that feels like an interactive movie.

@@Waffleisskating Sounds great! Will you update the character models geometry as well?
Portal RTX Remaster:
These ugly and hopeless lights will increase the game's hardware requirements by 1000%, Nvidia will thank you for this scam.
@@Gerek-fg6to The original game still exists, what is your problem??
yeah the weapon particle effects and stuff are my one and only complaint about this project, especially the revolver smoke rings and the grenade launcher's colossal smoke trail
@@truegamer_007 Yum yum, consume the shiny slop and don't ask questions. Guaranteed Funko Pop owner right here.
the ONE nitpick I have is the overtuned smoke emitting from the bullet casings, but other than that this looks incredible.
I've been playing games for 17 years by now. FPS, TPS, RPG, MMO, P2C, 4x, Survival, Horrors, VR, Platformers, you name it. I played HL2 for the first time a year ago and i think this is the best game i ever played of not made. Have fun and take your time
Same
Picked it up too late in life
I've played so many games in my life, but only a small number of them I want to go back and replay, and half life 2 is one of them. I played it at 6-8 fps on low settings at 480p, played on medium at 720p, played on ultra at 1080p, played on ultra with mods, played in vr, and now I'll play with rtx technologies. A legend for all times!
And now in 2024, you'll be able to max out RTX Remix & enjoy this game at 6-8 FPS again!
what was you PC to run on 480p6fps? It not even Pentium 3 level

Holy cow, Its Wormslayer! been reading his posts and comments on r/oculus for over a decade now. First time seeing his face.
😎
@@WormSlayerthanks for hard work man I still sit around playing half life and can’t wait for the finished product.
Wormslayer sounds like it should be a death metal band! LOL
Half Life 1 and Half Life 2 were both revolutionary when they came out, and their engines were the best of their time. Especially source, which was a paradise for modders.
TBH HL Alyx i also revolutionary and even now after 4 years there's not a single game like it.
I want to play Half Life 3 before I die. I’m 75 years old. Please please please Gabe Newell make it happen.
Now they are preparing them... But, they are NOT cooking it yet. They were really afraid of number 3 and messing it up.
HL2 is my childhood, nostalgy hits hard
Imagine going back to 2004, this banger released, along with Halo 2, GTA San Andreas, Farcry, NFSUG2, Madden, Splinter Cell. You just came home from school and fire up your PS2. Everything was very affordable, no market crashes, people were properly sane and no social media. What a time to be alive! Wish we could go back!
Doom 3, UT2004, Rome: Total War, Tribes Vengeance, WoW, Fable, MGS Snake Eater. What an insane year.
2004 was imo the best year for games ever, so many legendary titles
"People were properly sane"
Back then PC gaming was ahead more of Consoles. I think it played even better on PC especially with M and K.
People weren't sane, they just had less means to connect with alike people amplifying their madness.
this is one of the most important video games ever created and this is absolutely incredible
We are grateful to you for reviving this game once again. Thank you.
I am praying to God they don't change the music.
I’m so genuinely excited for this. Really feels like I’m gonna get that feeling of playing for the first time
Jesus Christ. I was thirteen years old when I got this. Pre-ordered the special edition with the art book and the T-shirt.
I remember being blown away watching (and rewatching) the E3 gameplay video with my mates in the school computer lab.
Time flies.
It just looks incredible! I wish the episodes would get their RTX Remix...Dreams are dreams
They could!
Same engine, mostly the same objects and textures ;-)
Then they'd make... Episode e?
it all depends if they can get EP1 and 2 to run with fixed function
i think it might be doable
Oh my GPU is going to have an adventure with this one. Still remember the launch day of HL2 and be amazed that me and my buddy could crank up the settings to the "High" preset with our medium performance PCs. The visuals blew our tiny little minds...Cant wait to re-live that feeling
Love when the community comes together. Really shows the power of our connection to this medium.
I cant believe its been 20 years & its still my all time favourite & it changed my life the only reason I got the internet in my own home back in 04 was to play hlf2 I learned so much, excellent work guys it looks absolutely stunning with the RTX enhancement.
Half-Life 3 needs to happen. Even if it takes 20, 30, 40 years - it needs to happen.
Good that it is happening currently. It's already being developed.
@@Blockbuster2033What's your source for that?

I would be happy with just Episode 3.
@Blockbuster2033 so, because some guy said so?
Hyped for this along with alot of my friends, seeing how well this game has held up over the years has been amazing.
Looks awesome! its a perfect remaster in my mind. Only nitpick is the seemingly over the top particle effects for some of the guns, especially noticeable @ 4:50. Probably something that can be very easily adjusted in options menu though
1:56 Fully modeled reference
Its insane how good this game still is after 2 decades.
It had everything at a stoichometric balance.
Honestly, just walking around City 17 and barricading yourself from the Combine while on the run would make a standalone title, but Valve actually wanted to deliver a message with storytelling.
My steam 20 year badge is almost here.
21er here!
I love HL2. I return to it all the time and I know some of that is nostalgia, but the game still feels like the epitome of a deeply immersive action adventure with a dynamic environment that feels like an interactive movie.
exactly.
You would think a lot of these cinematic-heavy modern games would have learned from HL2 instead of taking away the players control.
@@hyperreal Indeed. Agency is so important. Too many modern devs also focus too much on graphical photorealism. This isn't necessary, as you imagination fills in the detail if the agency is good, rather like the way a great writer pulls you into a gripping story.
I had a feeling I'd hear about this on hl2s anniversary
I really hope they’ll make RTX remix of Episode 1 and 2
Half-Life 2 is one of my favorite games, and I’m looking forward to a sequel or remake of this monumental piece in many ways.
I absolutely loved hl2vr. Please make the rtx version compatible with the vr mod!
Half Life 2's face animations were some of the best at that time and easily can hold up with game nowadays.
Thank you HL2!
Let them cook!! I want them to have all the time in the world to perfect their vision.
While I have my issues with Nvidia, there's no denying that their tech pushes gaming forward.
This looks incredible, I haven't played HL in so long, It'll be a lot of fun to go through it again like this.
extreme respect for making it free and accessible to everyone. introduce a supporter pack, take my money.
Half-Life 2 never dies and I'm all for it.
CANNOT wait to try this, stunning visuals!
I can't wait to play Ravenholm with RTX
I find this hilarious because I remember Half-Life 2 ran much better on ATI-cards at release rather than Nvidia-cards.
Well, It looks like I need go bust out the old Orange Box again and have another go! It’s been a hot minute Mr. Freeman!
Man, we got half life 2 before half life 3...
Wait a second...
Wait...
Half life 2 remake before half life 3 but yeah the number 3 doesn't exist to Valve HL2, Portal 2, TF2...
is the time continuum regressing?
*- Well, well. Isn't this just like old times...*
Storytelling in games:
2004 "So, wake up, Mr. Freeman. Wake up and smell the ashes."
2024: "So...I'm non-binary."
It went really downhill since the beginning of this console generation.
"... So wake up Mr. Freeman. Wake up and taste the quality of your memories." Well its not the best qoute but not the worst. As a fan i thank NVIDIA and Orbifold studio for creating these masterfull recreations/additions to Half-Life 2! I reassure that every fan (myself included) and Gordan itself and his firends will enjoy these!
the cake is lie
I'm of a certain age and don't really play games anymore, even though I still have a top of the line PC. There's nothing I'd love more than to revisit HL2 with these graphics. It would be the ultimate send off to my PC gaming years. Hopefully, it will be released soon or not too far into the future.
Remix has actually a lot of potential

0:26 You're not fooling anyone, Gordon Freeman
Wake up Mr. Freeman!
Played the original for the first time ever last year and it still holds up visually. Looks amazing, aged gracefully and the gameplay and shooting is still better than many modern games
This is how i remember half life 2 looking back when i first played it almost 20 years ago.
If someone who has never played a video game in their entire life but wanted to start with one that will leave them yearning for more asked me which game they should try first, I would tell them Half-Life 2.
They don't make them like this anymore. This game is a masterpiece from beginning to end.
To add to that: there is MASSIVE discount on the Half-Life games now and Half-Life 2 is for now FREE in Steam
"They don't make them like this anymore" Yes they do. You're just not playing those games. I'm so sick of these "le wrong generation" comments. Get out of your bubble.

Yes at about 486 hours per frame.
В хороших играх мы не запоминаем графику, мы помним эмоции, в моей памяти HL2 реалистичная как сама жизнь и эти все улучшения ничего мне не дают, мне кажется как буд-то она и была такой красивой )
