Great Game!! Michigan Used The Same Offensive Game Plan Ohio State Used The Previous Year Against Stanford. Unfortunately For Both Ohio State And Michigan The Inability To Navigate The Forward Pass Was The Reasons For Their Defeats.🏈😢
Stanford's John Ralston was the only coach to ever beat Hayes and Schembechler in consecutive Rose Bowls. That's a club that sounds like it SHOULD have more members. Nope, only him.
Great game! Curt Gowdy mentioned him at the start of the game, but the referee was Jerry Markbreit of the Big Ten, who joined the NFL four years later. His first two Super Bowls -- XVII and XXI -- were back here at the Rose Bowl.
I attended this game as a junior at Cal and sat behind the end zone through which Garcia’s winning kick sailed, and which was the Michigan end of the stadium. It was a clear, cool, exhilarating afternoon in the Rose Bowl, fifty two years ago.
WOW - Jerry Markbriet before stellar NFL referee career. Love Stanford's Come Join the Band fight song, rarely hear this played nowadays with All RIght Now the Cardinal fight song. Can't remember any other Rose Bowl Game without a Rose emblem at center field.
@@collegefootballhistorian2078 Close. 16 of 20. Ohio State won in '74, Michigan in '81, Michigan State in '88 and Michigan in '89. Add in the next three and it was 19 of 23 for the Pac-8/Pac-10.

This game sadly reminds me that both starting QBs: Don Bunce for Stanford; and Tom Slade for Michigan, coincidentally both passed away at age 54. Bunce in 2003 due to a heart attack. Slade in 2006 from leukemia. Friends of mine that were acquainted with the Bunce family informed me that Don and his family were aware of his heart condition, which at the time was considered inoperable unless a heart transplant was done. But Don chose to enjoy life without medical intervention, even playing a round of golf two days prior to his passing. Both Bunce and Slade were skilled professionals after their college playing days: Bunce as an orthopedic surgeon; and Slade having a dental practice.
Love this vintage print ! Thank You ! The first Michigan game I ever recall watching. Yay for classic gray colored face masks, too ! Slade looked groggy at times, like he was playing concussed. Agree with others that the safety call is questionable. Add up all the miscues, mistakes and stops on fourth down, Stanford still wins something like 26-22 - counting the safety. 🏉🏉
Curt Gowdy and Al De Rogatis had a very busy 24 hours. After doing this game on Saturday they flew cross country to Miami and did the AFC championship game the next day. That game started at 4:30 PM ET
I was there as a child! Still have the game program. Signed by I forget who. Unreal. Go Stanford!! I was at the unfathomable San Jose St. loss too where the kicker Garcia missed extra points and about 45 field goals (several). The score of that loss 13-12. Redemption vs Michigan he wins it 13-12.
For those not familiar with that rivalry of Stanford vs San Jose State: San Jose State was a second-tiered school for football back then, where most games were such lopsided victories for Stanford that they were little more than organized scrimmages for the Stanford team.
That safety call would never be made today. He was hit on three yard line and spun back. Different world, no challenges and rarely were bad calls even protested back then as it was futile.
A couple of other instances that reminded you “yeah, that was a different time”: Right after the safety, the Michigan guy taunting the ballcarrier would have probably brought an unsportsmanlike conduct call today, and Stanford rushing the field right after the winning field goal probably would have had them kicking off from their own 25 with 12 seconds left.
That safety may have cost Michigan the game. If Michigan kept them pinned and they punted, Michigan would have had great field position for a winning field goal. Michigan could have run the clock down and kicked a field goal with hardly any time left on the clock.
Curt had the jersey situation wrong on two counts. First, it was the Big Ten's turn to be the home team, so Michigan chose to wear blue as expected. Second, Stanford wore red when it beat Ohio State the previous season.
At 1:57:43 of the video, Dana Coin #36, the placekicker, was feeling the "thrill of victory"...seemingly oblivious to the fact that the "agony of defeat" was still a possibility 😂
Nowadays the whole team and 10 coaches are on the sideline during a timeout. Ralston and the QB calmly discussing the next play. Also, Stanford cheerleaders were dressed as Indians. Stanford Team and crowd rush the field before the game is over, no penalty. The game has changed since this one. I watched this game and was a Stanford fan since my Dad went there.
Canamrider, Stanford was always called the Indians till 1972 . ( because of protests) . Decided to use their red color for the team name, the cardinal.
Stanford gets ball with 1:48 left on its own 22, trailing 12-10. Bunce short pass to TE to 35 on first play. Bunce short pass right to Winesbury to Michigan 48 on next play with 1:27. Incomplete pass on next play. Bunch short pass to Moore to Michigan 42 on next play with 1:00. Then another pass to Michigan 28 with 51 seconds. Pass to Winsebury to Michigan 17. Timeout Run to 14. Timeout with 22 seconds. RUn to 13, final timeout. Field goal for Rod Garcia from 31 yards out with 12 seconds left.
After Stanford gave up a safety, Michigan receives the kick and has the ball with just over 3 minutes left at its own 43 with a 12-10 lead and the momentum. If they put together 3 or 4 first downs it is over. They take it down to 1:57 and force a Stanford timeout. Fourth and 2 at the Stanford 47. They decide to punt and give Stanford the ball. They drive down and kick the field goal at the end. Figures.
Dammit Michigan !! This game vaulted Stanford into the final 1971 AP poll Top Ten at #10 and cost LSU a Top Ten finish that year. The Tigers finished #11.
It always puzzled me how UM would consistently go toe-to-toe with the likes of OSU in the regular season, but when it came to bowl games, rarely did it click positively for the Wolverines.
1970s usc 🏈 teams had some super great 🏈 teams & players & michigan 🏈 simple passing attacks just didn't work, that why bear Bryant develop the wish born 🏃♀️ 🏃♂️ running attacks offense
I'm with you, I've always felt that the teams names gave homage to the native americans. Still I'm not native american and am old and set in my ways, so I make no claim my opinion is the undisputed correct opinion.
Michigan should have won this game. Couldn't get a drive completed at the one yhard line, misses a 46-yard field goal in the fourth quarter with the score tied. They got a break when officials gave Michigan 2 points on a Michigan punt and a Stanford return guy gets tackled at the one, where his forward progress should have been marked but officials said he was tackled in the end zone. Oh well. But Stanford comes back and wins it on a late field goal. Michigan had plenty of chances to put this away but did not do it. Could not get a passing game going and the wide running plays were not working. Poor coaching by Bo and his staff, again.

The official who made that call, Bill Quinby, later made it to the NFL. He was the side judge in Super Bowl XIX at Stanford of all places.
