I grew up in central Ohio and was nine years old during the '68 CFB season, and I remember watching this game live on WLWC in Columbus. For some reason I had started following OSU football early that fall and it turned out I picked a great season to jump on the bandwagon. The Ten Year War was a great ride. I'm retired and live in SoCal now (I couldn't stand Midwestern winters), and I finally got to go to my first Rose Bowl this year to see the Bucks beat the Huskies. Better 50 years late than never. Attending the game really brought back memories of all of those classic Rose Bowls I watched over the years, starting with this '69 game.
I was 10 in 1969 and my big brother Sandy to us to Port Columbus airport the next day to great the Bucks as they got off the plane. I can still see it at the age of 53. These guys were like giants We stood amongst Kern , Tatum, Mays, Otis and they gave us autographs. That sealed being a Buckeye fan for life. There have been many greats but this is my favorite team. If they ever needed someone to play linebacker or hey, even dot the eye, I would jump off my death bed and make Woody proud.
Thanks for posting this. I have a DVD of this game and the ball handling of Rex Kern was unreal. Friends who are OSU alum told me that he practiced hiding the ball using a mirror. Clever guy. On one series he totally faked out the NBC camera crew and of course USC. That last TD by USC was a face saving "gift" by the zebras. Hey it was in the Rose Bowl in SoCal. No surprise there, but at the end of the game the better team won and took home the National Championship.
JR in the 818 I've never seen anyone fake like Kern. He faked out TV cameramen all the time. He was also all-state in football, basketball and baseball and offered a hoops scholarship at UCLA. The guy was one serious jock.
about 8 minutes into the video. (The Bogus USC TD.) you see an Ohio State Player with 21 on his jersey. That's Art Burton. He was my Algebra Teacher in Perrysburg OH/
We all loved the McCoys' alternate version of their biggest hit ("Hurry Up, Sloopy"). You could sense it coming in the 4th quarter when Woody would signal The Best Damn Band In The Land to play the peppy tune if OSU was down by a few points. Hayes would grab a sideline marker and shred it with his teeth, then knock an unsuspecting grad assistant cold (in this case, Lou Holtz). And this would be the signal for Rex Kern to throw a screen pass to a receiver-- if and only if he was wide open 2 yards away :)
As a senior in high school my friend Neil Evelyn and I drove to California from Ohio and attended the 1969 Rose Bowl! Wow, what an experience it was. Had a piece of the goal post for many years but lost it over time.
Thanks for the clip of the '69 Rose Bowl game between Ohio State and USC. Saw the game on TV as a kid and loved every minute of it. Of course, Curt Gowdy did make gaffes at times, like when Gowdy mentioned "Hurry Up, Sloopy," instead of "Hang On, Sloopy," which the OSU band would play when the Buckeyes were winning football games in the final minutes. But this brings back memories of a big college football game, resulting in a Buckeye win and the 1968-69 national championship.
Only the jury in his civil trial hit O.J. Simpson harder than OSU that day!..... By the way, this is the best picture I have ever seen on a UA-cam sports TV broadcast. Beautiful and sharp. Like we're watching live. Great job!
Great call by Gowdy, totally professional, God I miss Lindsey Nelson, Keith Jackson, Jack Buck, Chris Schenkel Jim McKay et al. Those guys were the BEST! I'm from the Midwest so I am glad the Buckeyes kicked butt. Glad to see the Juice cough it up/fumble on those tough Buckeyes hits.
I was very young when this was televised but another memory was that it was used in our World Book Encyclopedia set so I could always see it again and again. Love the pom poms.
I remember watching this game on TV. I was 9 years old. Thanks for the memories OHD. I watched the part where Tatum flattens OJ four times before I watched the rest of the video.
I was 10 years old growing up in Ohio when this game was played. #1 Ohio State had its best team in years and was favored. Before the game my Dad kept warning me that even if Ohio State wins, a running back for USC named O J Simpson was gonna break one big time sometime during the game. He kept repeating, "trust me, he's going to break one big." I have an indelible memory of my father screaming "there he goes" when O J cut loose for that 80 yard TD run. Its one of my earliest TV sports memories.
OJ SIMPSON was a great tailback. Heisman trophy winner, 1st NFL back to rush over 2,000 yards! Despite losing to Ohio State 40 years ago 'SC is dominant once again.
Rex Kern, OSU QB had one of the best play fakes in NCAA history. 2:25, a classic. Word on the street is that the OJ Simpson has looked on every golf course in the country and still hasn't found the "real" killer. 4:25 Simpson fumble. 6:37 Simpson fumble. 7:46 Simpson HB pass - throws interception. Did a great job turning the ball over, too bad he didn't turn the knife over.
This would be the last postseason game a team OJ "blanco Bronco" Simpson was on would play, and it serves this killer right. OJ was embarrassed in this game by a Buckeye team that forced him to fumble twice and throw a red zone interception. USC would have been better off if OJ had stayed home. Glad to see the Buckeyes gave this "man" a place in the Rose Bowl hall of shame.
I was at that game-my cousin was QB Rex Kern. I wore a big scarlet & grey pin all that week that said, "OJ Who?" & kept it for many years until I had to pay for a move from DC to LV, NV & had to throw out excess & it went in that batch-was only 10 days before he killed his wife & Ron Goldman. What I could have sold it for on eBay! But it was a great ball game & I still have my piece of the goal post (they make em of wood cause they know they're gonna get torn down-so they wrap em in streamers)
The Super Sophomore's probably one of the best college teams of all time . Who in my lifetime suffered one the most devastating losses in Buckeye history 11 months and 3 weeks later .
Lou Holtz was Ohio State DC in 1968. When Simpson went 80 yards Hayes was screaming at Lou why he went 80 yards. Lou responded that was all he needed. Lol
@FranklinBlunt World Book Encyclopedia? I have the same ones, with game pictures, cheerleaders (OSU) in the "F" book for Football (pgs. 312-320). The pom poms were great. USC also used to have thousands of students and fans waiving them. The SC-UCLA game was an impressive sight with seas of cardinal & gold pom poms vs. powder blue & gold pom poms.
The story goes that Woody was livid at his defensive coach Lou Holtz about O.J.'s 80 yard touchdown at halftime. Woody bellowed, "Why did Simpson run 80 yards against us?" Holtz reportdly said, "That's as far as he had to go."
You can throw out both teams losses in a game like this. The only thing that matters is what goes on this game. Turnovers will be key and Ohio State has dominated in that department all year. Oregon....not so much. WE SHALL SEE. I like the Buckeyes in this one!
@GeneticRealityFilms I will say, whoever represents the PAC 10 in the Rose Bowl this year: Stanford,Oregon,Arizona. Most likely it will be the Oregon ducks. They WILL DEFEAT the buckeyes! Dickerson and SC would be the beneficiary of a similar call vs UCLA in the 1969 season.
Yeah, before they were mic'ed into the stadium PA system starting in the '90s(?) they had to make their signals big and clear so everyone in the stadium could clearly see them. It reminds me of how former stage actors tended to overact in the early days of movies because they had been taught to make what they were doing clear to everyone in the theater, even those in the back rows of the balconies.
hazelwood55 the comparisons really dont mean much players didnt do weight training like they do now and linemen commonly went 250 and under. there are plenty of guys from that 68-70 team -- the 3 sport all state athlete Rex Kern, Brockington, who broke 1000 yards his first 3 seasons in the NFL, the star studded defensive backfielld with Tatum and Sensibaugh, Mayes and Foley at tackles and others -- guys who would play today just fine. That sophomore class alone had 11 guys drafted by the NFL.
David Scott There were lots of guys on that team that were good in their day, I'll give you that. But what I really meant was the 2014 was much faster than the 1968 team and speed kills on the field.
hazelwood55 ok. the average lineman today goes easily 40 pounds more than they did then because of weight training. and the game had passed Woody Hayes by even in 1968, which is why that team didnt win the 2 or 3 natonal titles it should have won. I wont argue your point -- it's a differrent game now. but I have no doubt that a number of the 11 guys who went to the NFL from one single class could compete for starting spots right now.
Was this the last time that D Ohio State beat Southern Cal WOW !!! it doesnt matter that D Ohio State beat Oregon one game just like the Buckeyes say USC was lucky on Sept 12 and USC did lose other games but remendber the NAVY game Buckeyes !!! and look at youre non conference schuedule 2010 so now youre one and one in the PAC 10 think if you played in the conference would win it losing to PURDUE please !
Yeah, but he didn't commit the crime. Marcus Allen knows that for sure, but he's not fessing up because he was having an affair with Nicole at the time despite being married. OJ knew about it, but didn't become enraged as the media tried to portray him (Othello syndrome - what a joke - LOL!!!). Plus there had to be 2 murderers cause one set of wounds was caused by a lefty and the other set by a righty. OJ's a righty. Also Goldman had teeth marks on his fists, but OJ had no marks on his face.

Nah I’m sure he’s been hit harder in other games , Buckeyes won the turnover battle in this one.

I'm from the Midwest so I am glad the Buckeyes kicked butt. Glad to see the Juice cough it up/fumble on those tough Buckeyes hits.
Always pull for the Big Ten OJ dropped his glove Go Bucks
Good to see him fumble
overall SC leads the series vs Ohio St in the rose bowl and head to head 😉
I was very young when this was televised but another memory was that it was used in our World Book Encyclopedia set so I could always see it again and again.
Love the pom poms.
@speechrighter yes, Lou Holtz was defensive backs coach for Ohio State that year.
I remember watching this game on TV. I was 9 years old. Thanks for the memories OHD. I watched the part where Tatum flattens OJ four times before I watched the rest of the video.
Certainly one of the best college teams of all time IMO.
Underrated because of Hayes' Neanderthal coaching. Those guys should have won a title in 1970 and maybe 69.
Love those old sixties and seventies usc and Ohio state college football teams
Super Sophs!
Tatum was a beast
"The Assassin"
And one of the dirtiest players in the history of the NFL.
Yeah i'm old enough to remember when players didn't act like jackasses when they made a routine play like sacking the quarterback or tackling someone.
Hurry Up Sloopy...too funny!
What ever happened to that Simpson guy?
He got shut down by tatum
After the legendary long touchdown 🏃♂️ run of o.j.simpson against ohio state defense in the rosebowl 1969
Ann Coulter said it best:
You have to admire OJ's persistance. He has looked on every golf course in the country trying to find the "real" killer!
Love watching this stuff, thanks for posting.
This USC butt kicking is brought to you in living color on NBC.
I was 10 years old growing up in Ohio when this game was played. #1 Ohio State had its best team in years and was favored. Rex Kern was my favorite player. And I'm a Nebraska fan.
He runs the 100 in 9.4, especially when the police are chasing him.....
Hahahahaha 😝😂
NBC needs to get the rights to the Rose Bowl again.
Not for a long while.
OJ SIMPSON was a great tailback. Heisman trophy winner, 1st NFL back to rush over 2,000 yards!
Despite losing to Ohio State 40 years ago 'SC is dominant once again.
So Lou Holtz was the defensive coach of the Buckeyes!? Didn't know that. Hilarious story if it's true, and knowing Holtz it probably was.
Rex Kern, OSU QB had one of the best play fakes in NCAA history. 2:25, a classic.
Word on the street is that the OJ Simpson has looked on every golf course in the country and still hasn't found the "real" killer.
4:25 Simpson fumble.

He had 180 yards
@BuckeyefanHill33 and ur right about tressell winning his 1st rosebowl
Im not a UCS/OSU fan, however that is one matchup Im excited for!
last Trojan TD was talked into existence. not even close.
I knew Rex well. My grandfather was Dick Larkins, the A.D for Ohio State.
The Super Sophomore's probably one of the best college teams of all time . Who in my lifetime suffered one the most devastating losses in Buckeye history 11 months and 3 weeks later .
Athletic department budgets sure have changed. Note that a few players are still wearing gray helmets rather than the silver ones. 3:53
O.J. made some nice runs. The problem was a couple of times, he forgot to take the ball with him.
Lou Holtz was Ohio State DC in 1968. When Simpson went 80 yards Hayes was screaming at Lou why he went 80 yards. Lou responded that was all he needed. Lol
"I know, I know, just give me 5 more minutes!!" -- Sloopy (trying to hurry up)
I became a Buckeye Fan when the Juice was shut down. 1968-69 season . 8th grade .
Yeah it's pretty sweet to have a bowl game match up in week 3!! GO BUCKS!!!
thanks for posting
Was that tatum that made the tackle on the opening play on Simpson. Looks like it was another db...
Tony Green Sensabaugn
@@poppopartist3870 It was Tim Anderson.

@BIGBUCK20 Gowdy obviously had his finger on the pulse of pop music in the 1960s
Awesomeness!
Keep Up the Good WOrk in the Situation Room!
USC's last minute "touchdown" is a joke. It would've never stood today, but it didn't matter.
Yep, Ohio State 27 USC 10 ...was the real score.
Lou Holtz sighting (OSU assistant coach with black baseball cap) at 3:54! Right?
It's been so long since I saw this game. Kind of uncharacteristic of a Woody Hayes team throwing for scores.
The Rose Queen scalped a musk ox. And it was Tim Anderson #26 who put that first hit on Simpson, not #32 Tatum.
Hurry Up Sloopy? Even the great ones slip up now and then.
The story goes that Woody was livid at his defensive coach Lou Holtz about O.J.'s 80 yard touchdown at halftime. Woody bellowed, "Why did Simpson run 80 yards against us?" Holtz reportdly said, "That's as far as he had to go."
President-elect Richard Nixon and California Governor Ronald Reagan along with their wives attended this game. Mrs. Nixon went to college at USC.
You can throw out both teams losses in a game like this. The only thing that matters is what goes on this game. Turnovers will be key and Ohio State has dominated in that department all year. Oregon....not so much.
WE SHALL SEE. I like the Buckeyes in this one!
Should of been 27 - 10 final. Refs blew the call.
Too funny............ "Hurry up Sloopy" You can't make up comedy like that.
Just think Woody had a better team in 69. Man I hate the team up north!
Who say Woody doesn't pass?
He was a pure speedster. Rarely did you see him get tackled from behind unless it was a cut back.
That's sad considering Hang on Sloopy was probably a fairly new song then
That Ohio State team was loaded with sophomores. Everyone thought they would 3-peat with all that talent for 2 more years.
It did work for 1968.though
OJ wasone of the best college backs ever. I'll leav it at that
Not O.J.s best day, was it? One great run though. Where did McKay pull that option pass from deep in Ohio State territory?
Don't worry. He's still looking for the real fumbler.
@tommytrojan09 SC snt dominant i do find it very ironic though that USC beat Ohio State But USC isnt going to the Rose Bowl and Ohio State is
@kwilliams22332 ...The score should have been 27-10..the last TD by USC wasnt even close! oh gotta love those Pac 8 refs and homefield
Nice Job. I have the DVD of the game.
❤watching o.j. Simpson at usc days the band, , especially ucla&Ohio state football game too,
Goodness, these guys are all grandparents now....
Or dead
Or gone away to the "Supper Table".
@ 4:24 - gloves musta been too tight
0:59 the goal Post was so small
First he runs from the Ohio State Defense. Then, he runs from the *law*
How was that a TD
@MrMichigan95 yeah howed that go again?
Damn, that 80 yard run by Simpson was awesome!! YOu don't see backs use their vision like anymore.....
after that he didn't do shit.
He was on the US Olympic 440 relay team.
Orenthal was a real slasher.
@@DavidScottsc OJ was not on the Olympic team, he ran the 4x100 relay @ USC! He was not fast enough for the Olympic team nor ran the Trials.

Hurry up Sloopy? Hang on there Curt!
Oh man, that toe-kicking is so weird to watch.
Did they say OJ ran a 9.4?? Isn't the world record like 9.7?
that's for 100 yards.
a meter is like 1.09 of a yard. So he'd still be competitive.
jo23bulls The 100 yard timing was based on Simpson running Track for USC. No speed times are recorded in full FB gear. Check todays combines that are fixated on the 40 yard sprint times. The players all run them in Tee Shirts and Shorts, no gear. Still that is incredibly fast for a man of Simpson's size.
jo23bulls yeah,, its a yards v meters issue. Simpson was an Olympic 440 relay member.
jo23bulls That's 100 YARDS and NOT 100 METERS.
the Rose Queen with the Big Hair. LOL!!
Go Buckeyes!
OJ was a killer on his long TD run, but SC was killed by OSU
OJ ran better on that play than he ran from the Police.
"Hurry up Sloopy"???? WTF Curt Goudy!
broke the last SC TD frame by frame - he could not have had possession and 2 ft in bounds. His mo carried him out. I remember watching the game and bet my Dad $2 that OSU would win as I knew Woody was making them work hard, they had to make up the Disneyland trip with a 2x practice.
Dickerson and SC would be the beneficiary of a similar call vs UCLA in the 1969 season.
Dave Winfield? 5:20
Dave Whitfield...
I was a month and a half old.
(1:20) Look at that murderer run. He must have imagined the police were after him. Rot in jail juice.
I'd like how they candy stripe the goal post
maybe they should have used him more...so as to bleed out the clock
yea he may not have known who the Beatles were.
I was a kid when I watched this. One thing I never noticed back then was how demonstrative the refs were. Basketball refs of the era too.
