Thank you ! I was struggling to knit these on double pointed needles, but watching your video made it make total sense to me… so thank you again.. I didn’t think I would ever figure it out!!!
I just wanted to comment again after making my first mitten. It's beautiful!!!!!! I have never been able to do this prior to finding your tutorial. Thanks so much for posting this.
I was making my first pair of mittens, when this tutorial appeared. Thank you so much Cynthia. You are an excellent teacher. I appreciate your clear respectful language and instructions 😍
excellent Instructions Cynthia! thx for showing all the often happens mistakes. was scared about the thumb gussets. You guide us thru all the road bumps, thx
Yey ! A youtube instructor from EDMONTON ... I am excited!!! I will go to their location to check out their physical location! I never realised their were knitting instructors in EDMONTON. I always though that these sorts of clubs speciality shops exist in the STATES and other “major” and “famous” metropolitan cities... I consider my absolute beginner in knitting and I fell in LOVE with this hobby when I broke my leg in 2017. I discovered a set of needles and some yarn from my mom. Then I UA-camd “ how to knit”. I caught on the basic movements required. It is surprisingly amazing how a set of needles and a strand of yarn can help in alleviating pain(physical/emotional) Anxiety, Stress, and Depression. It is always a good feeling to see people representing the same city we are from.. I find it surprising how numerous people from English speaking countries have never heard about EDMONTON Alberta (“the city of champions”). To see someone demonstrating a hobby that is from Edmonton Alberta makes me feel very happy. Thank you!
Thank you so much! We're not open for in-person visits yet, but we do have a lot of content on our UA-cam channel. Check out the events/workshops page on our website at rivercityyarns.com.
Thank you so much! You are such a good tutor and I love the speed you are going for teaching. Sometimes it’s hard to see where the stitch was put on or taken off but having you do it slow enough really helpers! I never thought I could knit mittens but I’m making my first pair thanks to you! Much love and light 😘💖🙏
Thank you for this super informative video ! All your podcasts are wonderful and I look forward to them ..I can't tell you how much I enjoy them..Barbara in Montreal
Thank you Cynthia for a great tutorial on knitting mittens. Your tips were so helpful. Just the little pointers can help save so much time and make the process so-much easier. I am making my first pair of mittens and I’m doing fingerless ones. So thankful your UA-cam was recommended.
Cynthia, I have made many pairs of mittens over the last few years. And many of the pairs were done with this pattern. However, you have helped me out with many of the grey areas of the pattern that I just didn’t know about! Thank you, thank you, thank you for filming this video!!!
Fabulous video! I had decided to knit these mittens then started looking for tutorials using this pattern. Found one, but she was using magic loop. Your video is just so clearly photographed and your instructions so clear that literally anyone could follow. I’ve knitted a sweater and a cardigan using Tin Can Knit patterns & UA-cam tutorials. It’s just about the only way I’ll knit something I’ve never done since I haven’t been knitting that long. Thanks again for your help-it’s terrific!
Fantastic tutorial Cynthia! Wish I’d had it when I was teaching myself how to knit mittens. Thank-you. It offers confirmation that my own approach was on target. Great choice of pattern also. I’ve knit mittens from it a number of times, but also easily modified it to make fingerless mittens.
Good tips and reminders for those who are not a beginner. Thanks this was a great tutorial, it encouraged me to try out their pattern. 😊 Next time it would be great if you can knit with a light colored yarn as it’s quite hard to see a dark colored yarn in a video. Anyways thank you.
I just can't believe it! I am trying to knit these mittens using DPNs and found your video. I started one mitten but had to frog it because I didn't have enough yarn for 2 mittens, so I have found additional yarn and want to try again. I love this pattern too. While I do like using DPNs, I am wanting to learn to make these mittens using the magic loop method. I have reviewed other videos showing the magic loop method, but I would prefer a video applied directly to Tin Can's pattern. Could you please make another how-to make mittens using the magic loop method video and maybe for 2 mittens at a time? Thank you in advance for your time.
Thank you, Eugenia, for watching the video. We're glad that you found it and knit along with us. One of these days, perhaps... one of these days, we'll find some time for more videos.
I'm going to try this pattern. Going to do it with magic loop. Looks like i need to use 4mm needles to meet gauge. Edit: decided to make an in the round swatch. Turns out i meet gauge with the recommended needle size on magic loop. Making a large. Which part of my hand do I measure for sizing? Measured the the thickest part of my hand and I got 8 inches.
Hi Oscar, sorry about the late response. You'll measure around your hand, with your tape measure above your thumb joint and below your knuckles. So, around the widest part of your hand, not including your thumb. I hope that makes sense!
Hi there. Use the needle that gets "gauge" or makes your mittens fit nicely, then find a needle that is one or two holes down on your needle gauge for the cuff. If you're working with a superfine yarn, you might be using a US 2 / 2.75mm needle and the smaller one would be a US 1 or 0 (2.25mm or 2.0mm) needle. Does that help?
Exceptional video! I am just trying to learn.. one question; if you are straight knitting in the body of the mitten, how is it it looks like stockinette stitch, which i thought was knit one row and purl one row.?
Thanks for the great tutorial. I notice almost all mitten patterns have us cast on 1 or more stitches after putting the thumb gusset stitches on a yarn holder. Would it work just as well to do an increase in the hand portion in first round of the thumb gusset, adding the "live" stitch back that was used in the gusset?
Hi Roberta. You might have to review the video a few times to get it. And sometimes you just have to try it on to figure it out. You might get a thumb that's too short or too long. It's okay... you can pull it back a bit and put it back on your needles and do it again.
Hi Doris. Hang in there. It takes some time to get used to the double pointed needles. There are other methods for knitting in the round as well, if you'd like to try another method, check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/k7Q6ppykyAw/v-deo.html.
Hi Helene, thanks for asking. We don't have an equivalent tutorial video for socks. Socks are a bit more complicated so we prefer to teach in a more interactive way, with an online class. You get the affordability of online learning plus you can ask questions in real time.
Hi Arlene, sorry about the late reply. The answer is yes - you can do these mittens (and other "small circumference" items) on two circulars or one long circular - magic loop style.
Hi Holly. You just need to download the free pattern: tincanknits.com/pattern/the-worlds-simplest-mittens and you can choose how many to cast on based on the size you want to make and the weight of yarn you're using.
Hi Karen, all the links are in the notes just below the video player. Here's a link to the World's Simplest Mittens pattern by Tin Can Knits: tincanknits.com/pattern/the-worlds-simplest-mittens.
I don't know, but sometimes I think that they did it so if you're using a light coloured yarn you'll have at least three needles to contrast and if you're using a dark coloured yarn, you'll have three needles to contrast so you can better see your stitches. Maybe that's it; maybe not.

We do love the Tin Can Knits patterns. So many sizes, so many options. They are lovely designers.
This looks so easy with your instructions. But just to be sure could you come sit beside me on the couch while I attempt this mitten lol😁
Aw, thank you! I know you'll do a great job. Just remember that the first pair doesn't have to be perfect.
Good tips and reminders for those who are not a beginner. Thanks this was a great tutorial, it encouraged me to try out their pattern. 😊 Next time it would be great if you can knit with a light colored yarn as it’s quite hard to see a dark colored yarn in a video. Anyways thank you.
Good tip! Thank you for watching and for trying out the Tin Can Knits patterns. I really like them.
I just printed the pattern- can’t wait to try this!
Let us know how you do. Tin Can Knits patterns are really well written, in my opinion (Cynthia).
This helps thank you so much Cynthia sorry Brie bugging so much just new of making socks
Glad to help, Roberta.

Hey I love this tutorial.. I have never knit with dpns though so I was wonder if this pattern can be done using the magic loop??
Yes, absolutely. Anything that you can do on dpns you can do with magic loop.
Having two sizes of needles makes sense unless it's 7 and 9; or 8 and 10. With super fine yarn I don't thinks those are the choices. Any hints?
Hi there. Use the needle that gets "gauge" or makes your mittens fit nicely, then find a needle that is one or two holes down on your needle gauge for the cuff. Exceptional video! I am just trying to learn.. one question; if you are straight knitting in the body of the mitten, how is it it looks like stockinette stitch, which i thought was knit one row and purl one row.?
When you knit in the round, you never "turn" your work, so you get stockinette stitch just by knitting. No purling required.
Than you fr this tutorial!
Glad you found it helpful! Did you know that Tin Can Knits now has an app, with this mitten pattern on it? You'll find it here: tincanknits.com/app.
Try it, Annette. Let us know if it works.
I can’t remember if you do the make one at the beginning and how much do I leave at the end of the thumb part I’m on
Hi Roberta. You might have to review the video a few times to get it. And sometimes you just have to try it on to figure it out. You might get a thumb that's too short or too long. It's okay... you can pull it back a bit and put it back on your needles and do it again.
Where could I get a download to print the sock and mitten ruler guide ?
Hi Diane, I'm not sure what you mean. Send me an email and I'll see what I can do to help you out. cynthia@rivercityyarns.com
You use sock rule for measuring your mittens, where can I find the sock ruler !
I mess up sheesh now I gave in pick not all the way I got lost on the thumb part
Keep trying, Roberta.
they may be the simplest mittens to make in the world, but i am having a hard time learning to use dpn
Hi Doris. Hang in there. It takes some time to get used to the double pointed needles. There are other methods for knitting in the round as well, if you'd like to try another method, check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/k7Q6ppykyAw/v-deo.html.
I was wondering if the equivalent exists to knit socks?
Hi Helene, thanks for asking. We don't have an equivalent tutorial video for socks. Socks are a bit more complicated so we prefer to teach in a more interactive way, with an online class. You get the affordability of online learning plus you can ask questions in real time.
Hi, can you do these on circular needles?
Hi Arlene, sorry about the late reply. The answer is yes - you can do these mittens (and other "small circumference" items) on two circulars or one long circular - magic loop style.
How many to cast on.
Hi Holly. You just need to download the free pattern: tincanknits.com/pattern/the-worlds-simplest-mittens and you can choose how many to cast on based on the size you want to make and the weight of yarn you're using.
Where can I get the patterns you mention in this video?
Hi Karen, all the links are in the notes just below the video player. Here's a link to the World's Simplest Mittens pattern by Tin Can Knits: tincanknits.com/pattern/the-worlds-simplest-mittens.
I wonder why Addi chose to make the Flipsticks all different colors? It’s driving me crazy…. It’s so much easier to have each size use it’s own color.
I don't know, but sometimes I think that they did it so if you're using a light coloured yarn you'll have at least three needles to contrast and if you're using a dark coloured yarn, you'll have three needles to contrast so you can better see your stitches. Maybe that's it; maybe not.
Hello
I hope my message finds you well. I was wondering whether you have a basic beginner friendly tutorial on how to easily:
1- identify the types of stitches(increase, decrease,
KNIT and PURAL stitches, etc..)
That are on the needle(reading the physical work).
2- read the basic theory (EXAMPLE: What ABBREVIATIONS, GRAPHS, CHARTS, PATTERNS, interpret specific instructions,)
3- understand colour working charts
4- overall video about understanding basic written theory for the techniques used for any project.
Irrelevant Analogy:
Sort of like how Music teachers reserve a class for music-theory only, to make the student learn how to read sheet-music or music theory (notes, abbreviations, chords combinations etc) to make it easy to read any sheet of music.
------------------
Personal feedback/suggestion:
Like many inexperienced or ‘beginner-self-taught’ knitters, a lot of us are very Auditory and visual learners. Me Being one of those people, I struggled visually while you were demonstrating how to manipulated the stitches(example picking stitches, decreases increases, waste yarn method, etc.). The reason was because of the dark coloured yarn you used in the video. Whenever you have a chance to make another tutorial, can you consider demonstrating with a brighter vibrant colour and use contrasting colours to teach a particular (‘new’) technique.
other than my visual struggle way you explained everything was phenomenal. I think you are a very learnéd person and an expert teacher for beginner students. I have searched for video that teach the theory aspect of knitting but the sometimes I lose focus because the instructor tends to switch the subject and unnecessary talking, loud background music. Good evening Cynthia
What an excellent video - thank you for going slowly and explaining everything clearly in your demo.
Thank you for watching, Ivana.
this video would be much improved if they used lighter colored yarn...difficult to see the stitches with such dark yarn.
Thank you, Donna. That's a good observation. We'll definitely do that in the next video tutorial.
So thoroughly explained! Thank you so much!
Excellent! So glad you liked it.
