Letting The WOOD 👀 DESIGN The Shape! Wood Turning
Вставка
- Опубліковано 24 січ 2024
- Many times I like to turn a piece of wood just as I've received it. This piece is no exception. I find plain, round bowls to be, well, ordinary. Often the original, organic shape, is way better than anything I could come up with. Try something like this, you may find it draws a lot of positive attention! Finished in shellac.

I have been turning for about 6 months. Found out almost immediately that the lathe was just a ‘starter’ and it seems I am constantly figuring out that I need- or at least could use- more equipment and tools. Slowly but surely trying to add equipment as the budget allows. My husband and I watch your channel and love your positive spirit and appreciation for nature and how the projects turn out. Before turning, I had never gushed over the figuring or shape of a piece of wood! Who knew one could get so much pleasure from just appreciating the hidden treasures inside of a chunk of wood. I don’t really anticipate winning- I don’t usually win things like this but wanted to let you know how much we enjoy your channel and your positivity! Thanks, Leah Russell
Thank you for spending some time with me, Leah! I'm really glad you have learned to appreciate all the wood has to offer! 😊
OK Phil. Here is my short comment. Your videos are the reason I started turning bowls. I give a large portion of my bowls to charitable organizations to be sold for revenue. Therefore, You are the reason these charitable organizations prosper. And yes, due to your recommendation I bought a sandoflex. I love it immensely and would surely treasure the one you are giving away. Thank You.
Thank you, Jerry! 😊
Hi Phil. I was wondering if you made or bought your recess tool and how do you sharpen it? Thank you
@@charlesallen4702 I bought it, Charles. You can find them on Amazon or on the site that sells your brand of chuck. I hone it with a diamond card.
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop thank you
Phil, another nice piece. I agree looks like some kind of apple, maybe crab? As an old timer also, I appreciate some of the first tool editions when they were made to last and could be maintained and often repaired! Planned obsolescence devised by the marketeers a sad reflection on made in the USA! Whoever gets that original will cherish it! Keep up the inspiring work and stay well and safe. Warmer now here in MT also.
67 years old, retired and wife is gone for many years. Hoping to fill my time with woodworking.
😊
I am 74 and watch you quit often. I would like to get this a gift for my son.
I appreciate you being here, Yvonne, thank you! 😊
Hi Phil, I’m actually in the UK but your videos have really inspired my turning. I’m a retired NHS doctor and after 38 years of public service I now turn as much as I can, giving my work to friends, family and local charities
😊
Love your show and the info on the sand o flex I am looking hard at getting one watching you use your so much thanks again for the video
Acid Reflux & I were up the other night &I found you.
Never knew what to do with the bark till I saw you.
Inspired by your videos, I'm going to give this a try. Is there any other way to deal with the bark without the Sand 0 Flex?
@@rjyetter3288 I have used a handheld wire brush with some success.
Im a 58 yr old Healthcare worker, who discovered woodturning 3 years ago and fell in love ❤️ I would LOVE to add the sandoflex to my arsenal of tools!
😊
My son is autistic and I want to get him into woodworking. I think he would be more enthusiastic with more gadgets. I am convinced this is more than just a gadget. Thank you.
😊
Beautiful bowl, Phil. Thank you for the opportunity to be able to sand like you. 😊😊
😊
I'm a recent retiree and you're a major part of why I'm turning bowls
Good to know, Karl, thank you! 😊
Hi Phil. I’m a 33 year old farmer that spends all winter turning bowls. Thanks so much for making these videos. You’ve changed the way I approach turning and inspired quite a few of my projects. Thanks!
Great to know, Andrew, thank you! 😊
He does some really good work and explains what he is doing and why he is doing it. Priceless. Love this guy.
Phil is a great teacher. I have watched him for years , in fact , my wood turning shop looks a lot like his. Pretty much all the same tools...except I do not own a sand-o-flex
Love this video❤ who ever is lucky enough to get the sandoflex will love it makes the bark feel like butter😊 the apple bowl is beautiful. Thanks for sharing 😊
That turned out so pretty! The contrast between the bark and the inside is beautiful. Lovely piece Phil!
I may not be the most deserving of your viewers for the San-O-Flex. But I can say honestly that you inspire me! I’ve been turning for only a couple of years and you and Papa1947 have been my inspiration.
😊
That’s definitely apple Phil. Right down to the line of crumbly punky pith.
I put your videos through onto the tv so my 91 year old mom can watch. She loves you.
I got a 180 grit Sandoflex on your recommendation and love it. If you choose me and liked my comment I’d really appreciate it. Thank you so much. 😘
Thanks, MandyRay! Say howdy to your mom for me! 😊
I like your style Phil. When you stop and show your progress is great. When I'm turning I stop often to see where I'm at and where I'm going. I enjoy watching your videos. When I watch others turn I keep waiting for their stop, but they seldom stop.
Same here. It always seems so strange, how are we supposed to see what's happening. But more than that, I just like to see inside that wood!
😊
Super generous, Phil. I hope the person who gets the sander uses and enjoys it for a long time.
I hope so too, Matt! 😊
I'm not a wood turner. But I truly love to see what you are going to find in what ever piece of wood you are turning. Weather it a bowl , plate a vase what ever. It makes me happy when I see what you found with in the wood.
Cool, thanks, Salky! 😊
Hi Phil I’m 80 and started turning 2 years ago I do a lot of natural edge bowls and natural ash trays and natural crosses for the youth all my stuff is given away. I think I have watched every video you’ve made and I still don’t have a sand o flex. Keep up the good work
😊
AWESOME! Valerie came through again! 😁😁😁
She sure did, Gord! Hope you are doing well, my friend. 😊
Thank you, Phil, for another great piece. You're such a nice guy❤
My pleasure, Jeanne, thank you! 😊
I don't turn wood but I love watching the transformation. Thanks Phil.
😊
You always say our comments bring you joy! Your turning brings me joy, along with your love of wood and bark!
Love that! Win-win! Thank you, David! 😊
I just love the fact that you leave everything you do so natural, I love the grain on this beautiful bowl.
Thank you so much, Rena! 😊
You are the person that got me into leaving natural edges on my bowls. I never understood until I saw what you and a sandoflex could do to soften the look and feel. Now I attempt to save the bark whenever I can, but I still don't have a sandoflex so I have to use a lot of alternatives. It would be helpful that is for sure. Looks like an apple tree that started to spread maybe near the crotch.
Thanks, Jeff! 😊
Phil, my husband and I watch you on big screen. He loves your tips and the valuable information you give out and your sense of humor. We are happy to hear you are giving to a worthy person, who would use it for a worthy reason. 👍
I meant, we don't want to be in the pick. Just complimenting you.
Thank you Cheryl and hubby! 😊
I would just love to hold that bowl. That’s that, I’m getting a lathe. Thanks Phil! Now I’m going to have to tell my wife that I have another hobby.
😊
Hi Phil, I'm just starting to turn. I'm learning a lot from you. The beautiful pieces you create. Thanks for sharing your talents.
Good to know, Elaine, thank you! 😊
You make my day!!!! Been trying to turn natural edge pieces more. I don't have a sand o flex. That piece IS GORGEOUS!!!!!!❤
Thank you, Jane! 😊
I am retired. Llathe set up about 2 years ago and I don't presently have a sand o flex and do not know from where one can be purchased😊

It's a beaut, Phil! I wanted to get into turning for years and finally made the plunge last year. Your videos convinced me to do so. Your patience, sense of humor, and love for turning, remind me that life is about enjoying the process, celebrating the kindness of friends and family, and enjoying what Nature created. Cheers and be blessed!
Great to hear, Scott, enjoy! 😊
I love the results you get from pieces most turners would toss onto the burn pile. You honor the wood. Thanks for the inspiration, Phil.
Thank you, Anthony! 😊
Another stunning piece, Phil. That bark does create a wonderful contrast with the wood itself. That sandoflex really does the job! Great work.
Than you, Richard! 😊
I have several friends and several youngsters from church who asked me to share my limited knowledge of woodturning, and I took on the challenge. I share tools and have given them tools to get them started. The sand-o-flex would be a great addition to tool chest for this effort. Love your work. Thanks for the opportunity.
😊
AT80 years old I just started turning. I have been following you for several months and your channel one of the most helpful out there. I vesity your site almost daily and the addition of the sandoflex would be a great help to my new adventure.
😊
Phil, I love the way you let the wood talk, and know that the Sand-O-Flex is one way to make it happen. I am totally humbled by some of the comments here. I have my dad's Sand-O-Flex and will be getting another so I can have more than one grit.
Excellent, thank you, Eileen! 😊
Tomorrow I will have power to my work shop and can get serious about wood turning.
😊
Hi Phil. I've returned to turning after 40 years (life in the Navy makes it hard to find wood).
I've been inspired by your videos to start turning live edge bowls with some success.
😊
Another bowl saved from becoming firewood to treasure may God bless you for sharing yourself
😊
Created by God! Revealed by Phil.
Love your work and abilities.
😊
Hey Phil, enjoy your content. I've been a school teacher for 34 years and I turn as a hobby. It would make a great addition to my little shop. Either way, keep on turning!
😊
Hi Phil! How nice of you to share with one of us! I'm a newbie turner and still working on building up all the tools I'd like to have. Thanks for all the great videos!
😊
I say give it to one of the new turners in your audience. If they're lucky, some of your magic will following the sand-o-flex to its new owner. Your videos have been a great gift to me more than you'll ever know. That's enough for me.
Thank you so much! 😊
I’m new to wood turning. You have helped me so much. I’m 88 and just got started and I’m looking forward every day for videos like yours thank you so much. I like that sanding wheel you showed. Didn’t know they existed. Thanks Dave Marshall.
😊
Phil simply been following for years learned the lessons you taught me. You doe a good job bro. Live long and strong and never regret we are only here once thank you for ending my internet friend you never met xxx

Phil I have been a job shop machinist for fifty years have machined every kind of material. I would love to have a chance to do what you do. It is an expression of yourself. You put all of you in it. I thank you.
You sound like Tuffy! Also a 50 year machinist! 😊
You find it very almost relaxing I am sure. Thank you Phil. You are a tuffy also. I just turned 70 and still am working full time.
Nostalgia. Old tools are cool tools. Thanks Phil still love watching you work.
😊
I'm a 75 yo new turner. Let me use it for a while( because I'm old) and then I will pay it forward. Love your channel. 😘
😊
You are the 'Bob Ross' of wood turning for this non turner...keep posting such enjoyable content and resources. Purchasing a Sand a Flex for Hubby for his birthday. Thanks for info!
😊
Another beautiful piece, Phil. The biggest thing I have learned from watching your videos is to try and imagine the beauty inside an otherwise piece of "throwaway" wood or firewood. Thank you for sharing ... again!
😊
Hi Phil! Love your videos! I’m a science teacher that has been doing woodturning for the last two years. The addition of a Sand-O-Flex would be a wonderful addition to my limited tool collection.
😊
Hello Phil, I enjoy you weekly videos and have learned a lot from you. However I would like to thank you for something you said some time ago. You referred to your wife's heavenly birthday, I had never heard of that before. We lost my mother in law a year ago and I told my wife it was her mom's heavenly birthday and that small phrase was very comforting to her. Thank you for doing what you do and the positive impact you have on people.
Thank you, Jon. 😊
I've been woodworking since the 1970s when I was about 4 yo with my dad. Learned wood turning in Jr high woodshop. Finally got my own lathe. You're turning inspires me.
Thank you, Korey! 😊
I purchased a sandoflex because of your work and look forward to each video. So, as much as I’d like it, I already have a plastic one and want someone who needs it to get it. Thank you, Phil!
Thank you, Robin! 😊
I particularly appreciated your delicate, precise, and consistent application of the tools on the bottom of the bowl. Very pretty piece!
😊
Thank you,I don't need the Sand-O-Flex. Just finally wanted to tell you that you feel like a neighbor.
Thanks, Kevin! 😊
That apple wood and bark was prettier than I expected. We lost ours when our extended garage/shop burned down and I’d love to have a replacement! Thanks Phil for another beautiful bowl!
😊
Another irregular shaped piece, love the apple wood. Good luck choosing a worthy viewer for your gift. Someone will be a happy Turner.
Thanks, Doc! 😊
Ok, here’s my short comment! Best tool for ‘bark’ sanding of any kind. Turning pieces, and natural edge table tops. Thanks again, Phil.
😊
You are the absolute cutest, Phil. I love your videos and have zero reason to have your much sought after Sandoflex. I hope whoever wins it appreciates it.
And that bowl is killer! So so so stunning.
See there, you made me smile this morning, Kathleen! Thanks, I needed that! 😊
very nice bowl. Love the way you leave the nature of the wood. My husband is a disabled woodturner. Two failed back surgeries and the loss of some control of his left leg. He is always telling me he wants a Sand-O-Flex.
Thank you, Paula! 😊
I hope he gets it 😊
Phil God bless you in all that you do in teaching others how to create beauty from that which would be cast aside....
😊
I’m new to turning and I’m learning new techniques all the time. Turning has become my favorite way to unwind too. Win win.
😊
Sandoflex!? Phil, your UA-cam videos are my favorite. You create extraordinary art from rough wood. The Sandoflex is your go-to tool. Excellent!! Sierra Hotel!
😊
Hi Phil My great-grandson who is seven watches your videos with me a lot. He is starting to turn with me on occasion and I think he would love to have the sander especially because it came from you. Thanks for all the lifes lessons you give us turning and other wise.
Start 'em young! Way to go, thank you! 😊
I'm a single father of 3 girls. I'm trying to get started with wood turning, but my budget is limited. Thank you for your videos.
😊
Good evening, Phil.
I love your Applewood bowl! Bark, bark, bark. 'Time for sanding!' Sand-O- Flex, Sand-O-Flex, Sand-O-Flex. All the best to you, my friend.
Thank you, Ray! 😊
I had been an avid turner then stopped. Found your videos and I you helped me return to turning. Love your style.
Great to hear, Kandie! 😊
Sand o flex makes natural edges smooth to the most delicate hands.
😊
I'm from London, UK, and started turning in December last year. I don't think I have stopped! I'm already addicted. I love your turnings, love the natural form. Thanks for sharing.
Haha, yup, that's the way it goes, Rachel! I always warn people, "don't get started!" but, they don't listen! 😊
I was lucky to get some green sycamore logs and have been part turning them. I have some interesting bits left with odd branches etc. I'm looking forward to seeing what they turn out like.@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
Howdy Phil, My wife and I love your videos. I just retired this month and plan on doing a whole lot more turning. The wife and I both love turning on a lathe that belonged to my Grandfather. We have never done live edge work but your work is so beautiful we can't wait to start. Thanks You for all your great videos.
Thank you, Tony! 😊
Hey Phil, I've been watching your videos for quite a while now and the main thing you have taught me that there is no such thing as an ugly piece of wood.
😊
That’s very kind of you to give away the sander. I hope whoever you give it to pays it forward!
😊
This old grandma watches most all of your videos, always with envy when you demonstrate the sand o flex. Would really love to have one someday.
😊
I just started turning bowls at age 76. Been enjoying your videos and only turned pens before. A Sandoflex is essential, and I don’t have one. I would be honored to be your choice.
😊
Hello, Phil
I turned 67 this year and I plan on retiring soon I truly enjoy your videos and I’m thinking about getting into Woodturning
😊
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; “Phil and his amazing Sand-o-flex”. I have one and would like another so I don’t have to change it out between grits. That is all Phil. Thank you for everything over the years.
😊
And also you have helped me save a bunch of Bark from the sawdust pile for the past few years.
😊
Plain and simple.
Got bored making candle holders and simple bowls. My lathe sat unused for about 20 years. Started watching your channel, a few years ago, inspiring me to look at wood and turning a different way.
Thanks you.
It's such a more interesting way to turn, thank you! 😊
Years ago I sold off my woodworking equipment to buy out a small machine shop. Now that I am retired I am getting back into wood working and wood turning so I am reequipping my shop and the task is daunting and expensive. A sand-o-flex would be a great addition to my tools.
😊
Wow! I am impressed with how many new turners that are subscribed (as I am) to your channel. You are teaching a new generation of turners many, many tricks of the trade. Thanks for the inspiration to be creative.
Thank you! 😊
Pick me! Retired after COVID and set up a small shop with a lathe and found my new love. You have given me so many ideas and solved more turning issues than anyone else. SO PICK ME! 🐎💨😎
😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop as Maynard G. Krebs said, “Oooh, oooh, pick me, pick me!”
Please consider letting us know who wins it. I honestly am not a wood turner but want to be when I retire. Your videos take soo much stress off of me and I love wood and absolutely love watching you Phil. You are awesome.
😊
I love the aroma of freshly-cut wood! I like your friendly teaching approach. I don't turn, but there were turners, whittlers, and cabinet makers in my family tree. My dad was a contractor. Let the wood be itself! Yes!
Awesome, thank you! 😊
I look forward to your videos every week. I am amazed by your ability to turn a piece of wood that I would never consider suitable for anything other than firewood into such beautiful turnings. Keep up the good work. Roger
Thank you very much! 😊
I’m a beginner turner who has stumbled upon your videos. I’ve been turning away lots of beautiful features because I thought everything needed to be symmetrical and balanced. As soon as my garage warms up, I’m going to utilize the beauty in the wood like you’ve shown us. The Sand-o-flex would come in handy!
😊
You are a good guy, Phil...no I don't need a Sand O Flex...but you are a good guy! Oh yeah, love the apple bowl, so natural, so pretty.😊
Thank you so much, Karen! 😊
I know I'm probably too late for the sand o flex kit. But man would I ever loved to have it. I've watched you for over 2 years now and you have inspired me to try different turnings. Thanks Phil
😊
Hi Phil!🙋♂️ Thanks so much for all you go through to provide us with these informative and entertaining videos! 👍👍
My pleasure! 😊
Hi Phil, what I find amazing about your videos is I always learn something new, you may not even point it out or know you doing it but each video is an education to me, gorgeous piece!
Thank you so much, Michael! 😊
I just retired and plan to make wood turning my vocation now. I saved up and bought a Jet lathe and have been slowly trying to gather up chisels. I have been so amazed at what the Sandalflex does, but haven't been able to justify buying one when I've never even seen one.
😊
I'm getting back into turning after 50(?) years. my wife loves your work and she says I need that sand-o-flex.
😊
hi phil i live in nova scotia and watching it snow lol i worked in the woods for years so its nice to see that there are people who love and respect nature like you anyway you keep me sane during the winter blues
Cool, thank you, Debra! 😊
Phil I love to watch you work and your voice is so relaxing keep the beautiful bowl turning videos coming and thank you for all the time and effort you put in
😊
Don't pick me for the sand-o-flex. I don't typically leave the bark because I can't make it look good. So smooth turning for me! Great video Phil!

A Dandy bowl on all sides and beautiful colors 😊
Thank you! 😊
I am seventy four yrs old and on fixed income. I old use this on black cherry and southern pecan. Ha e learned a ,ot watching your channel. Thanks for you knowledge.
Thank you, Sherman! 😊
Phil, I always look forward to your videos. I love your enthusiasm in your hobby and that you share that with everyone. Beautiful work! Thanks!

I'd give this to my highschool wood shop. The kids could put this to good use.

I no longer own a lathe so my turning is with the kids at school. I enjoy teaching them some of the basics.
OK, Phil. Here's my comment. I've spent my 50+ year career in the medical field. Alway did some woodworking. Now retired I have my own woodshop. For Christmas my wife gave me a jet1015 lathe. I'm starting a new phase, with some storm blow down plum and other woods. I'm excited with the possibility. I like how you handled the external bark. This great info. Just subscribed. Thanks
