Letting The WOOD 👀 DESIGN The Shape! Wood Turning

  • Many times I like to turn a piece of wood just as I've received it. This piece is no exception. I find plain, round bowls to be, well, ordinary. Often the original, organic shape, is way better than anything I could come up with. Try something like this, you may find it draws a lot of positive attention! Finished in shellac.

I have been turning for about 6 months. Found out almost immediately that the lathe was just a ‘starter’ and it seems I am constantly figuring out that I need- or at least could use- more equipment and tools. Slowly but surely trying to add equipment as the budget allows. My husband and I watch your channel and love your positive spirit and appreciation for nature and how the projects turn out. Before turning, I had never gushed over the figuring or shape of a piece of wood! Who knew one could get so much pleasure from just appreciating the hidden treasures inside of a chunk of wood. I don’t really anticipate winning- I don’t usually win things like this but wanted to let you know how much we enjoy your channel and your positivity! Thanks, Leah Russell

OK Phil. Here is my short comment. Your videos are the reason I started turning bowls. I give a large portion of my bowls to charitable organizations to be sold for revenue. Therefore, You are the reason these charitable organizations prosper. And yes, due to your recommendation I bought a sandoflex. I love it immensely and would surely treasure the one you are giving away. Thank You.

Phil, another nice piece. I agree looks like some kind of apple, maybe crab? As an old timer also, I appreciate some of the first tool editions when they were made to last and could be maintained and often repaired! Planned obsolescence devised by the marketeers a sad reflection on made in the USA! Whoever gets that original will cherish it! Keep up the inspiring work and stay well and safe. Warmer now here in MT also.

I’m a beginner turner who has stumbled upon your videos. I’ve been turning away lots of beautiful features because I thought everything needed to be symmetrical and balanced. As soon as my garage warms up, I’m going to utilize the beauty in the wood like you’ve shown us. The Sand-o-flex would come in handy!

You are a good guy, Phil...no I don't need a Sand O Flex...but you are a good guy! Oh yeah, love the apple bowl, so natural, so pretty.😊

I know I'm probably too late for the sand o flex kit. But man would I ever loved to have it. I've watched you for over 2 years now and you have inspired me to try different turnings. Thanks Phil

I just retired and plan to make wood turning my vocation now. I saved up and bought a Jet lathe and have been slowly trying to gather up chisels. I have been so amazed at what the Sandalflex does, but haven't been able to justify buying one when I've never even seen one.

Don't pick me for the sand-o-flex. I don't typically leave the bark because I can't make it look good. So smooth turning for me! Great video Phil!

I'd give this to my highschool wood shop. The kids could put this to good use.

OK, Phil. Here's my comment. I've spent my 50+ year career in the medical field. Alway did some woodworking. Now retired I have my own woodshop. For Christmas my wife gave me a jet1015 lathe. I'm starting a new phase, with some storm blow down plum and other woods. I'm excited with the possibility. I like how you handled the external bark. This great info. Just subscribed. Thanks

Your channel is a relaxing therapy for me during a stressful week & I learn from you. I look forward to seeing you work in your shop every week. Thanks for sharing your talent. The bowl is beautiful as always. Nope, I don't need the sand-o-flex kit. Share it with someone who will use it.
