That was a cool video. Several years ago I visited the Hoover dam and was able to go into the generator room but not down to the floor. If anyone hasn't been there they are truly missing one of the MOST amazing structures ever made by man. It will blow your mind how big that room is. Just think of the imagination, design skill, engineering and pure manpower it took to create the dam.

As someone born in West Allis and planning to visit Hoover Dam in May, I was absolutely floored to see the Allis-Chalmers plaque next to the original turbines! What an awesome piece of history trivia I didn't expect.

You basically went on the exact same tour the general public went on back in the late 1960’s, and yes, we could look out the vents about halfway back up. Back then they called it Boulder Dam, the other buildings on top besides the two elevator towers, are 2 two story public restrooms. If memory serves, there is a great view from the upper level. This brought back great memories for me.

I am amazed by the network of tunnels and all of the massive machinery inside. The thing is when you see footage of the dam being constructed it looks very much like it is solid from base to top? Obviously the amount of planning and thought all of the way through the project was immense. Would love to see some of the finer detail like that and the way they went about it. Thankyou guys for the insight to this engineering marvel.

The open turbine you saw was "JUST" for the service power (as you said), those types are called Pelton turbines, while the actual operating turbines are Francis turbines (which are more efficient if the height is substantial), and those have different blade formations.

No physical magnets involved making electric power... Rotating magnetic fields is how they work, whether it be hydro, Fossil fuel, or nuclear.. large rotating generators work on the same principal

@@battleshipnewjerseysailor4738 maybe in small generators like for home use but not in large industrial generators there are no magnets.. and what is a large industrial generators I mean something in the order of 50 megawatts to 1250 megawatts... I'm a plant equipment operator, I've been a control operator for a 650 megawatt combined cycle plant, a diesel generator operator in the US Navy along with being a gas turbine systems mechanic in the US Navy, and now I operate hydropower plants... And in all that time spent in my particular line of work I have never scene a large industrial generator that uses permanent magnets.... Every single one of them have used electromagnets to create that rotating magnetic field lines of flux...
