I'm not a big fan of text, but those are pretty good ones. I'd like a shirt of them gathered around the D&D table as their cartoon characters, looking like they're really into the game.
I'm proud of this math puzzle and proud of the guys for solving it. If they had decided to go with any other whole number under 9 though, and climbed the rest of the way from there, there were 7 other encounters inside the subliminal space of the beanstalk corresponding the the other doors/numbers.
I can't wait for the girl's campaign to start, partially so that I have another thing to be absurdly, ridiculously excited about in between episodes of this one
There are a couple of shortcuts. First, to get a whole number without using brackets, the division must be either 4/2 or something/1. If it's 4/2, we're left with 5, 3, 4/2 = 2, and 1. If it's something/1, we can ignore the /1 and are left with 5, 4, 3, and 2. Either way, there are four numbers left. We choose two of them to multiply together, giving a single number as their product. That leaves three numbers, so we choose one of them to subtract from the sum of the other two. There aren't too many possibilities, few enough that we could just list them (but there's a second shortcut, see below). Starting with {5, 3, 2, 1}: 5 * 3 = 15; {15, 2, 1} gives 16, 14, or -12 5 * 2 = 10; {10, 3, 1} gives 12, 8, or -6 5 * 1 = 5; {5, 3, 2} gives 6, 4, or 0 3 * 2 = 6; {6, 5, 1} gives 10, 2, or 0 3 * 1 = 3; {3, 5, 2} gives 6, 0, or 4 2 * 1 = 2; {2, 5, 3} gives 4, 0, or 6 Starting with {5, 4, 3, 2}: 5 * 4 = 20; {20, 3, 2} gives 21, 19, or -15 5 * 3 = 15; {15, 4, 2} gives 17, 13, or -9 5 * 2 = 10; {10, 4, 3} gives 11, 9, or -3 4 * 3 = 12; (12, 5, 2) gives 15, 9, or -5 4 * 2 = 8; {8, 5, 3} gives 10, 6, or 0 3 * 2 = 6; {6, 5, 4} gives 7, 5, or 3 This gives our answer. There are basically two options: 5 * 2 + 3 - 4 and 4 * 3 + 2 - 5 (with the /1 going anywhere). But in fact, we could have narrowed things down further. When adding or subtracting any list of whole numbers, we can work out whether the total will be odd or even just by looking at the number of odd values in the list. If that number is odd, the total will be odd; if it's even, they'll cancel out and the total will be even. So for x + y - z to be odd, either one or all of the three numbers must be odd. That lets us rule out most of the triples above. Starting with 5, 3, 2, 1 was never going to work, because when we multiply two of them together, the resulting triple will always include exactly one even value (and two odds). For 5, 4, 3, 2 there will always be at least one even value in the triple, but we can make sure there's another even value, by not multiplying together the 4 and 2. That leaves five triples to be checked by hand.
That's a great analysis! Fun fact: because of all these symmetries, the number of "normal" ways to get single-digit results is a power of 2 (64 ways to get 9, 16 ways to get 8, 32 ways to get 7) - although I don't see a short argument why exactly this is the case. But there are also some more creative ways, e.g. -5*3/1+24.
This math is great but there is a small mistake given the fact that we NEED to use only one of each / * - + 4 * 2 = 8; {8, 5, 3} gives 10, 6, or 0 I don't think you can get that 0 without using - twice, but that´s a small nitpick
I've noticed a pattern. Boss Fight: Reckless abandon badassery. Events That Follow: Cowering in fear of trying to trick a SHOP KEEPER who is hanging out ON THEIR bean stalk. And they slowly gain more recklessness the more bored tehy get outside of battle. But they always get shy preceding battles.

That's what I was thinking. Not one of the four thought "ehhhh maybe a one bean haggle 🤷♂️" Rob even said he made the item good so it would help alot but not broken enough to break the campaign, I feel he would have allowed it
How Rob explained in his last Behind the Scene stream, the bean prices were set. No haggling could have been done. He would have even adjusted prices up if they had managed to get more beans.
I assume Rob, with his math degree, enjoyed them solving the primary grade math much more than any battle that might have happened had they encountered any of the insects he devised :D
I'm surprised that Ben didn't try to "persuade" the shop owner to take 10 beans and when Rob asks for a roll check, use his luck charges to to get an instant nat 20. That's how you D&D! 😎
Perfect combo w a coffee in the morning. Huzzah. And tangent, but Rob's little clueless gesture when they hint at possible outcomes that may or may not be valid is so hilarious. Just smirk n shrug. All DMs should do that, put it in the book! XD
Puzzles are so much fun! I find it hard as a DM to gauge how long it will take a party to solve one, but 8ish minutes is pretty spot on for a party of four I think.
Operator priorities were not used here. Otherwise, it would be a nighmare for the guys. It's just one step a time calculation. And, operator rules are just rules only those who know about them can understand. It's more of a memory rather than a problem solving ability. That doesn't mean an intelligence check. If the GM said that specifically, of course it's an entirely different problem.
19:56 As you wish: My answer was 4+2=6, 6/3=2, 2x5=10 & 10-1=9 I was quite impressed with myself till I un-paused the video only to learn that there are over 200 ways of getting of doing this (17:56)

4 x 3 = 12 - 5 = 7 + 2 = 9 / 1 = 9. I'm not good at math, but I figured that out in about 45 seconds with watching about 3 seconds of the montage to figure out what all the numbers and symbols were xP Glad you did a math puzzle though =D It was nice to see the guys messing around with it ^_^
Since he asked: (5*4-3+1)/2 in about a minute. Writing it down now I noticed the necessity of the brackets, so: 3*4+2-5/1 in about 3 minutes And if that's the one they used: 5*2+3-4/1 in another 2 minutes
This is, no contest, one of the funniest episodes in the entire series. 😂 And not for any one thing like Bodger jumping off an airship, but just everything. Beautiful.
A quick python script came up with 216 different ways to solve the for nine. I thought at first that I had screwed it up after it returned "15-+4*3/2" as a solution, but, after some study, I realized that I had forgotten how PEMDAS works and that's actually right.

Starting with {5, 3, 2, 1}:
5 * 3 = 15; {15, 2, 1} gives 16, 14, or -12
5 * 2 = 10; {10, 3, 1} gives 12, 8, or -6
5 * 1 = 5; {5, 3, 2} gives 6, 4, or 0
3 * 2 = 6; {6, 5, 1} gives 10, 2, or 0
3 * 1 = 3; {3, 5, 2} gives 6, 0, or 4
2 * 1 = 2; {2, 5, 3} gives 4, 0, or 6
Starting with {5, 4, 3, 2}:
5 * 4 = 20; {20, 3, 2} gives 21, 19, or -15
5 * 3 = 15; {15, 4, 2} gives 17, 13, or -9
5 * 2 = 10; {10, 4, 3} gives 11, 9, or -3
4 * 3 = 12; (12, 5, 2) gives 15, 9, or -5
4 * 2 = 8; {8, 5, 3} gives 10, 6, or 0
3 * 2 = 6; {6, 5, 4} gives 7, 5, or 3
This gives our answer.

But there are also some more creative ways, e.g. -5*3/1+24.

Bob: "CLOUDS"
Not me refreshing constantly to be able to watch this as soon it comes out
Wait does it always go up at the same time?!?! How have I only just realised
Too early for the captions too
Whilst the helm would be impressive, Bob having the passive featherfall is likely to be much, much more useful for him.
(5*2)-(4/1)+3
plus 3 variations from moving the divide by one to various different positions
edit: 32 permutations of the physical pieces that result in the 10 -4 +3 simplified terms
Also (3*4)-5+2/1 with the /1, -5 and +2 being able to be anywhere
@@IronFlasher99 No. You used 2 twice and dropped the 4.
@@BluesIsDerBeste You're absolutely right xD I was very confused
@@BluesIsDerBeste Fixed it
(1+2)*3/(5-4) too easy 😅 that took me like 5 seconds
*Walking on the clouds and they start to fart* Wow... it's like the bog of Eternal Stench from Labrynth!
HAHAHAHA THE COLD DAMAGE AFTER EATING THE ILLUSION BEANS WAS THE BEST HAHAHAHA
24:09
Rowan:"14+2!"
Rob: "Alright, you dont offend her"
Awesome DM'ing
I wish Ben would have done a persuasion check to haggle the price down by one bean! I feel like Rob would have allowed it.
@@gohan2304can that be viewed anywhere after the fact?
Also surprised Ben didn't try mugging him for the featherfall ring he likely had while swandiving off the stalk... Or his shop key.
@@gohan2304 RobertHartleyGM on twitch, every Sunday rob goes through behind the scenes for current episode. Vod should be there.
I assume Rob, with his math degree, enjoyed them solving the primary grade math much more than any battle that might have happened had they encountered any of the insects he devised :D
Yep!
@@RobertHartleyGM Yay, you replied! :) Btw I have a degree in math too, but like a math teacher :D
Applause to the winner in mathematics! 🏅
The guys masterfully spoil the most magical and romantic moments.
Rob staring at the camera during the illusion bean scene was the best haha
I'm surprised that Ben didn't try to "persuade" the shop owner to take 10 beans and when Rob asks for a roll check, use his luck charges to to get an instant nat 20.
That's how you D&D! 😎
I did the puzzle in about 1 minute. 3x4-5+2÷1, didn't realize until Rob said that there's 200 ways to do it. Really took the wind out of my sails.
Love this series. Thank you guys so much for our weekly adventure!
Perfect combo w a coffee in the morning. Huzzah. And tangent, but Rob's little clueless gesture when they hint at possible outcomes that may or may not be valid is so hilarious. Just smirk n shrug. All DMs should do that, put it in the book! XD
Rob's face in the thumbnail should be a new meme
Puzzles are so much fun! I find it hard as a DM to gauge how long it will take a party to solve one, but 8ish minutes is pretty spot on for a party of four I think.
Nowadays, I prefer campaign even more than the regular skits :)
I've never played d&d, But I've been watching this series for years. It has made me love the game
The black and white math montage is literally too hilarious ahahahahaha especially the critical/serious soundtrack ahahahaha
PEMDAS Parenthesis->Exponents-> Multiplication-> Division->Addition-> Subtraction
3×4÷1+2-5=9
Operator priorities were not used here. Otherwise, it would be a nighmare for the guys. It's just one step a time calculation. And, operator rules are just rules only those who know about them can understand. It's more of a memory rather than a problem solving ability. That doesn't mean an intelligence check. If the GM said that specifically, of course it's an entirely different problem.
Soo good. Would have been hilarious if solving the puzzle rewarded a singular bean
I'm surprised none of them tried to persuade or intimidate to pay less beans.
yeah some type of haggling attempt would have been the logical thing to do.
Or stealing stuff again
BOB! BOB! BOB! THE GENUIS! Well deserved title :D
so many "what they could have done" moments in that episode to try and get a bean. awesome as always though! 👍
That mummy rot anti-dote seems like 'this thing is not like the others'...totally should buy that.
Nevermind climbing magic beanstalks to the skies and clouds - Bob/Ben solving the math is the plot twist of the this story arc!
Perfect time to take a break from writing my own campaign and watch the master DM
Aww shucks, thanks!
It’s so cruel of Rob to describe all the awesome things the helm does. 😂
Bodger starts looking around for types of Giant to upgrade his Hammer 😂
I love that Rowan is comfortable enough at the tavern to stand, regularly getting up and down during sessions. 💜
Bodgar and the baroness are gonna make Hagrid, I swear
19:56 As you wish:
My answer was 4+2=6, 6/3=2, 2x5=10 & 10-1=9
I was quite impressed with myself till I un-paused the video only to learn that there are over 200 ways of getting of doing this (17:56)
Should have used their group wish for the extra 2 beans to get the nasty sword he never planned for you to get. LOL
I really like how Rob put his soul into this game.
His work is awesome)
5×2/1-3+2
I was already gasping for air with Bodger trying to do math...and then the PSA hit.
Greg’s trolling of Bob is Hilarious 😂
“Hey! You leave Garlic out of this!” 😂😂😂😂
It would be funny if it would turned out that after some time there are just doors at the bottom of the bean sprout that teleport you to the top :)
Thank you for the fun little puzzle. I love puzzles and had to pause the video and figure it out before "Spoilers".
3×4=12+2=14-5=9÷1=9. Yes kids, stay in school so you don't end up like these crazy adventures having all the fun 😉
The intro gives me goosebumps every time.
21:58 and 22:11 are such precious interactions
The PSA for "stay in school..." made me laugh.
4 x 3 = 12 - 5 = 7 + 2 = 9 / 1 = 9. I'm not good at math, but I figured that out in about 45 seconds with watching about 3 seconds of the montage to figure out what all the numbers and symbols were xP Glad you did a math puzzle though =D It was nice to see the guys messing around with it ^_^
Didn't even try to huggle or steal last bean! Come on, guys! DandD-ing!
Since he asked:
(5*4-3+1)/2 in about a minute.
Writing it down now I noticed the necessity of the brackets, so:
3*4+2-5/1 in about 3 minutes
And if that's the one they used:
5*2+3-4/1 in another 2 minutes
I wonder if Kriek Nicholson would have eldritch luck advantages the way Bob does. Challenging him to a gamble would be tricky...
This is, no contest, one of the funniest episodes in the entire series. 😂
And not for any one thing like Bodger jumping off an airship, but just everything. Beautiful.
That click-thumbs up was so smooth!
Guys, you should have exchanged the mask of curiosity for a sword, it would have been the scam of the century))
"You finally poke your heads above the clouds and pass out from anoxia..."
I never knew I needed more math montages in my life.
With all the Bobster has been through that one bean away was a cruel trick. I hate dangling carrots.
25:13 so, the party has reached the Bog of Eternal Stench! It looks a bit different than it did in the Labyrinth!
20:17 favorite moment of how they realistically solved the problem
A quick python script came up with 216 different ways to solve the for nine. I thought at first that I had screwed it up after it returned "15-+4*3/2" as a solution, but, after some study, I realized that I had forgotten how PEMDAS works and that's actually right.
alan's laugh is so frickin precious (5:50)
Here ya go Rob: 5x2-4+3/1
Accidentaly it's even correct when you take PEMDAS into consideration
You made the puzzle maths!? How was this not a 7 day long episode haha. The bean stalk would die before they can solve it hehe.
I'm so surprised at the total time it took us - it felt SO MUCH longer at the table
Good job, Ben. You even got the order of operations correct on that math.
All about clouds! Haha, needed that laugh Ben. Still, so ashamed I couldn't solve the maths door :( so embarrassing :(
And after that they climb down again, only to learn that the magic shop has a sale now, and the helmet is now only 10 beans.
Yey. Longer episodes this week ❤
They gave as a longer episode as compensation for letting us do MATHs
Them low dice rolls got Bob doing the numbers.😂
This series is incredible, keep up the hard work guys!
Love the Adventure Zone reference!! Fantasy Costco and Garfield transcends the DnD multiverse.
Finally, after 3 weeks of watching this series every day, on my spare time, i catch up, now the waiting game begins
Props to whoever captioned the thin air scene with *farm animal noises.*
Rob finally got them to do a puzzle correctly with math, then instantly devolve into fart jokes. Poor Rob.
5x2/1-4+3 was my way, didn't time it tho, but i guess around 5min maybe less. Fun puzzle Rob.
Thanks!
