I haven’t had this issue with any of my 509s but I’ve heard about a lot of others having it. A lot like Sig products. Great designs but the failure rates leave you a little concerned to carry them.
Harry's Holsters exactly! I ordered the apex heavy duty striker. Which there have been nothing but great reviews. So When it comes in I am going to give it a try. Looking at the design of the apex one I feel pretty confident because it isn’t skeletonized and it is violet stainless steel that is heat treated. Actually your videos on the sig p365 series have stopped me from buying a sig for carry! So thank you for the updates on those handguns. Thanks for watching

I figured out why…it’s in the fn handbook manual lol it say don’t dry fire it even tell what to buy if u want to dry fire lol that’s why we should all read our handbook 😂
FN 509m owners manual specifically says not to dry fire the gun. stupid, i know, but they clearly know they have a problem with the striker and the shock that it undergoes during dry firing.
j b yeah kinda counter intuitive since you have to dry fire the handgun to disassemble 🤦♂️ FN needs to rethink the striker design or material used. Thanks for watching!
Same thing happened to mine after 1 mag and minimal dryfire. Luckily I had stopped daily carrying it after I heard of the issue, a couple weeks later it happened. Put the apex kit it along with the apex trigger and spring kit, never an issue since.
FN has addressed this issue in some of the newer released FN 509 Midsize models. Their new striker resembles that of Apex. It also smooths out the grittiness of the trigger. The way I see it you have two options, 1) Send the firearm to FN for repair 2) Purchase the Apex heavy duty striker and drop it in yourself.
MDX that’s really interesting because this is the newest model they have released and it has this crappy one in it. I wish they would just send me a new striker. I have already installed the apex one and will be doing an update soon on it! Thanks for watching!
boomee78 I repeat snap caps are not what’s stopping these from breaking. People have reports of strikers breaking with using snap caps. It’s because the parts are not heat treaTed or caster properly. Some people are getting good ones while others are getting bad ones.
I think this just happened to me! I went to dry fire my FN 509 C and I just heard a “tink” against my wall. Can’t find it anywhere but I can’t see the tip of the firing pin poking out of the slide at all it’s just gone. What do?
Galleywinter farm I just tested the new apex striker and it functioned fine so far. If you buy one of these then get the apex striker right off the bat. Peace of mind.
The problem is people are dryfireing with out snap caps when it says in the manual not to do that the apex works fine as well i have one stock 509 now withover 6000 rounds plus dry fire no issues.
boomee78 some work fine while others don’t. It’s not a matter if I’m doing something wrong by dry firing. Dry firing is not breaking these strikers. It’s a poor heat treatment of the part which is causing them to break. They acknowledged there was a bad batch of strikers that was mixed in and some guns are still getting the bad batch of strikers because they are mixed in. Dry firing is NOT breaking these strikers. The Apex one isn’t breaking because it is properly machined and heat treated along with a better design that just can’t break the same way.
I think there must just be some striker flaws per batch. The batch 2 in black that we tested consisted of 14 509s with 3000 rounds put down range in each. Some of it was +P. However, the 14 509s from our batch 4 in FDE had no malfunctions except for the 6 that had the striker snap. 6 out of 14 snapping is bad news, but none of the earlier batch black ones had this problem at all.
Thank you very much for adding this as everyone thinks it’s just me and my improper dry fire techniques. Good to see some more data out there. Thanks again!
They specifically say do not dry fire in FN 509 firearm manual , I've put well over 5,000 rounds thru the exact same pistol they are the perfect carry firearm when there is ammo in the weapon , you really shouldn't dry fire anything somethings just handle it better , the instruction manual also says if you want to dry fire for who knows what reason just get some dry fire dummy rounds. Sorry that happened to you but striker fire pistols shouldn't be dry fired . You where correct when you spoke about the upgraded firing pin but don't give up on your FN they truly are amazing pistols .
Glocks are designed to be dry fired as that’s how they are disassembled.. same with a lot of striker fired guns. Just needs some tougher parts and it’s good to go. Just can’t trust it after the failure. I still dry fire Glocks all the time and have yet to have a striker break or a smith and Wesson for that matter.
FN 509 is an almost perfect platform - Apex striker, extractor are a must to be swapped out. The only other thing I would change is the ambidextrous magazine release. Depending upon your grip sometimes it’s difficult to drop a mag cleanly. I would offer at least a reversible type that almost every other platform offers like M&P and glock
Dry Fire with a Snap Cap or a Dry Fire Laser like the G-Sight ELMS Gen 3 is not an issue. Either way, you can clearly see how well an APEX striker is made over the stock striker. Just replace it no matter what; don't wait for it to fail.
I was going to buy this with the trijicon rmr on it but now ima wait or not at all I feel if you spend $1200 it shouldn’t break man am I disappointed cuz I ordered it at my local gun store and now I’m not going to pick it up today. Because anyone who is efficient with a firearm dry fires significantly more than they live fire their firearms. Any professional shooter dry fires for hours a week.. it’s how you become efficient and fast.

I've read enough posts and watched enough videos on this that it's way more than a coincidence. Jerome Gabriele That’s fine and I’m glad you’ve had good luck. There have been multiple report of people dry firing with snap caps and it has still broken a striker. I have easily over a few thousand dry fired through all these other guns and never had an issue. This gun with the apex striker has had hundreds upon hundreds of dry fires and it looks brand new. The skeletonized striker is just a cheesy poor design made from inferior material that has no business being in a firearm. Some people have had great luck but there have been too many reports for them to not do something about it and switch up the material or design of the part to beef it up.
My striker failed but not at the back, the pin snapped off. I had some 300 rounds through the weapon and lots of Dry Fire using the G-Sight. When this went down, the Striker Return Spring got chewed up as well. It was a bit of a bitch to get the pin piece and return spring out but I managed to clear it. I replaced it with the APEX striker and a new return spring. Real easy to do and APEX has a great video on UA-cam to show you how to do it. When you look at the APEX, you can see how well that striker is over the one from FN. The weapon worked well after going to the range and putting a couple hundred rounds down range. If you have a 509 just replace the striker regardless and put in the APEX ahead of time. To have this happen when you NEED the weapon would be a disaster.
Exactly, overall I really loved the handgun and the way it shot. I was so bummed when it broke and even after replacing the striker with the apex, I just couldn’t maintain trust and ended up selling it which I do regret a little as I really liked the handgun. Thanks for watching!

They have been breaking without people dry firing them so that isn’t the answer. Thanks for watching.
Every video I have watched with this issue yall have all said it happened during dry fire READ YOUR GUN MANUAL it states clear as day not to dry fire it i trust mine with my life because I know how to properly take care of my firearms
You have to dry fire it to disassemble it. This is a major problem. FN has known about it for years. Yet they still put this garbage firing pin in the firearm.
My firing pin broke during live fire soo Dey firing is not the issue..weak ass striker is the issue.
I mean ur advised not 2 do alot of dryfire so u play stupid games u win stupid prizes
Hmmm they have been breaking even without people dry firing..? Can you explain that one?
Well, next time read the manual.
Lol it also says to dry fire the trigger to remove the slide..weak ass striker
Read your owners manual SMH....
It’s a terrible design. Interesting how Glocks and many others can be dry fired thousands of times and no issue? Shitty part with a shitty designed striker. It’s why they ditched this striker in their now ls edge lol
I won't buy a gun that you can't dry fire. This is not good. Made me change my mind.
It has been good to go since the APEX striker and I do honestly trust and carry it everyday
@@maxhayward2127 Thanks. I'll take a second look because other than that striker issue it looks like something that could work for me.
