- A major reinforcement operation is underway to bolster security forces in the French Pacific island territory of New Caledonia. The airlift of police and soldiers follows three nights of protests over electoral reform. Four people have died in the unrest, including a police officer.

Funny how that minority wants them to vote based on their skin color and restrict the ability of the whites to vote. Thats called an apartheid state.

They did t break the treaty, they are going to modify the law so some non kanak Caledonians can vote, like it should be in any democracy.
While the Kanaks want a non democratic, racist and racial state where only them can vote, which is unconstitutional. The kanaks never accept anything that doesn’t go their way, even thought it is democracy. The people of New Caledonia (only kanaks and a minority of whites that can vote) voted to stay in France 3 times, and every time they refused to accept the democratic results. The Kanaks pro independence are racists non democratic people who want a racial state where they do t need to work and can live off stealing from the others. France already gave them their own government, they are the majority of those who can vote, France gave them for free a big part of the territory where non Kanaks can’t buy land or exploit the land and the kanaks showed themselves to be totally incompetent in these lands where they just chose not to work but instead steal from shops and the non kanak population for a living.
They have more rights than any other French person I clueing those in the metropolitan areas, they have free healthcare, free education and higher education, yet they choose not to study and not to work but instead live of stealing from others.

Take a look at the Comoros Islands once they voted for independence and their neighbor, Mayotte who stayed with the French. Night and day. Mayotte thrives, the Comoros were stolen blind and bankrupted by their native leaders. All their people headed for Mayotte. The people of Mayotte insisted the French remove them. AND, the leaders of the Comoros put up blockades so their own people couldn't return.

The French have been very devious with their overseas conquests and thefts. They made their colonies actual Departments of France under French law. Therefore, they can make the claim that this is a civil war and can be put down under law. This is different to other colonial countries who always acknowledged that their conquests and thefts were colonies and therefore, although they fought to keep control, they could never claim it was civil rebellion. For those colonists it was, at least, always clear that it was indigenous independence that they were resisting and therefore morally and legally indefensible.

even though I'm French, why blame Azerbaijan? seriously we are a joke....
In this case it has absolutely nothing to do with pro independence groups, but everything to do with the 15-25 years old kanak youth the Kanaks themselves and the rest of the population has had problems with for years.
It is a youth that refuses to study and work, even though education like healthcare is free, but prefers to loot shops at night and steal cars. It has been an ongoing problem for years not only in Noumea but mostly in the Kanak villages.
These young criminals profited from the few peaceful manifestations at the beginning to go all wild, and none of the pro independence movements have any power over them for the simple reason thi s youth isn’t doing this for pro independence but for their own profit.
Talking and finding solutions with pro independence movements won’t resolve the situation, a hard line by the police and authorities will.

Good how no one commenting has been to the Pacific Islands. As a resident of them I can tell you that you must visit. You can see reality of colonialism. I don't like colonialism but if the French pull out then the islands will be poorer than the people starving in India. Any other options? Go travel all the pacific islands that are so called free and dependant, they are extremely poor with high death rates of babies nd locals, no basic services! ll the money goes to corrupt independent politicians, so no basic services and no money, double hit.
