Probably people who neer played the games past "the real classics" or just jumping on another controversy bandwagon. It's always best to just ignore them. Especially when there's obvious proof of their claims to be bullshit
Honestly, the whole 'woman no man can resist' trope is so annoying because it implies that the writers / game designers either forgot about gay men / asexual people or they're implying that the woman is SO gorgeous that it even makes gay / asexual people like them... which, no. That's not how that works. Also they like, forget lesbians exist with that trope too? It could be interesting if it was explored more in games. Like Sylvando from Dragon Quest *sometimes* being affected by the seducing moves but also not, implying that he's most likely bisexual. It adds depth to the gameplay and makes the characters more interesting too, having to strategize which characters are weak to what 'charming' moves to know when to defend / etc.
In Icewind Dale 2 charm doesn't work very long on any character. But the nightmare begins, if paladin in your party sees charmed character... Of course, he will try to kill him/her. Worst part of it - he will try to kill that character even AFTER Charm wears out!
While not technically a "Charmer Boss", in Splatoon 1, your playable character is a 14 year old Inkling named Agent 3 because Nintendo didn't want the NPC's to have to call you your Nintendo account name. As you go through the campaign, you might get attached because she is your playable character, and courtesy of Splatoon being a shooter, is very vulnerable to enemy attacks, with basic Octotroopers able to kill in 2-3 hits if you are unarmored. Fast forward to Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion endgame, and she is controlled by the main antagonist and pit against you in a 1v1 desperate bid to stop you escaping to the surface of Inkopolis!
One of the most infuriating charming boss i've encountered as a kid was Lady viper in Denpa men 2 She could easily beat your entire team with full-party wind spell and the charm effect preventing your team from using actions. Ah, I remember Astarte. Since I rarely ever used the "Talk" feature in PoR's pause menu, I didn't even know there was special dialogue for if Jonathan was hit by Astarte's "charm" technique. Without using a guide, I pretty much figured out most of the game by aimlessly wandering, all those years ago on my very first playthrough. It's also nice to hear that you're still using *Meteos* music, whoisthisgit! Now that's a nostalgia-trip.
i have never played a castlevania game before, and this is the first i’ve ever heard of this “old axe armor” person, but am i now headcanoning them to be nb? yes, yes i am.
My opinion of Astarte....... Frustrating. I mainly used Jonathan for fighting, and barely used Charlotte (R.I.P). However, this boss made this annoying, because of it's mechanic to charm Jonathan. I Ree at the thought of Astarte all the time.
Another Charm Boss that is worth mentioning is Ishtar from SMT Strange Journey Redux. She has two Moves that can cause charm and another move that kills anyone that is charmed , which also replenishes her health depending on how much HP the victims had.
I can think of a few more bosses that use the Charm effect. You probably know about Fiore "Why Did Braev Hire This Guy" DeRosa, a Red Mage without the stylish hat who may be a future topic of discussion. Charm is a staple in D&D, with the effect making its victim friendly toward the caster, and the boss I'll discuss here is from Dungeons & Dragons Online. But he doesn't use it on you, he uses it to turn NPCs against the party. Dariel is a boss in the quest "Partycrashers". He's a Tiefling wizard, disguised as an elf named "Malior d'Phiarlan", out to attack the House Phiarlan gala and kill the Viceroy with his own brainwashed guards. He's one of three assassins you can detect before telling Cyan the coast is clear, and you get bonus experience for killing him early, and even more bonus experience for not killing any of the guards. If you detect him early at the party and use Bluff or Intimidate to bait Dariel into the library, you can safely kill him in there; it's best to use single target attacks on him. The guards aren't immune to effects like Hold, Hypnotic Pattern, or a Bard's Fascinate song, so using them can make it easier to spare their lives. In the Epic version of the quest, any arcane spellcasters and Bards can set up Otto's Sphere of Dancing, which is even better. If you don't kill Dariel then, he shows up in the end fight, along with any other assassins you didn't kill. If you didn't take out the Tieflings in the private rooms either, you can very quickly be overwhelmed by sheer weight of numbers. Aside from his Charmed guard minions, Dariel isn't that interesting; he's a typical caster boss, throwing attack spells as well as Hypnotism and Hypnotic Pattern. He resists Electricity and Fire a bit, but not enough to justify changing up what spells or weapons you use. He can also cast Blur, so characters with melee or ranged attacks will find True Seeing helpful to avoid that pesky 20% miss chance. He's classified as an "orange named" Mini boss, so he can be affected by status, and even "save-or-die" effects like Phantasmal Killer- which Wizards may have already! As a caster, he likely has higher Will saves, but lower Fortitude and Reflex.
Charming women only? Oh, that's the job for the best admiral in the Valuan fleet, Vigoro! There's other games where gender has an effect, such as Ultros only targeting female with single target Tentacle attack in FF VI or trolls in Dragon's Dogma being excited at the view of a woman (or a man for their DLC variant)
Whitney is also located earlier in the game where your Pokemon choices are limited, in Claire's case it isn't that hard to over power her with brute force by that point since you have fully evolved pokemon and can easily get powerful pokemon as well.
@@EsoiTheGrumpyMawile Not true in the slightest. There aren't any easy ways to catch up to her in levels since the levels on wild pokemon are pathetically low at that point. There's also no easy way to get the type advantage since your only options are getting a Kingdra via trade(not available to everyone) and a Dragonite from the Dratini available at the game corner(takes an exhausting amount of grinding for the coins & the levels).
The original Gen 2 had massive difficulty spikes when it came to gym leaders, it's one thing they fixed for the remakes because it was so tedious and annoying.
@@kiwikarp9509 I stand by my point, yeah overleveling is a chore in gen 2 for the reasons you said but powerful pokemon can still give you an edge, a luxury not easily afforded for the Whitney fight. I'd like to point out that Claire is still one of the harder fights in the series, It's just that Whitney gets mentioned more for good reason, it's also why Lenora is also considered a hard fight (though in her case you can get Sawk or Throh to make the fight easier).
Dragon Quest 9 has an early boss called Morag that is capable of using puff puff on any party member, but the effect is merely losing a turn because at this point, your adventure has just started. 11's Dora-in-Grey, however, doesn't have such a restriction: her signature charm works on everyone, 100% of the time. In fact, her AI is programmed to target Sylvando, who is the only party member that can remove it without breaking a sweat. The worst charm boss in Dragon Quest was retroactively added in 8's 3ds port: Jessica in memoriam. Her puff puff has been upgraded to always work on male characters. This seems like a good time to mention that 4 out of 6 playable characters in the game are male. And you're not allowed to have a party smaller than 4 members. And she's a boss you unlock by beating the game's original superboss, so the rest of her moves aren't weaker to compensate for the fact that half your party's trying to kill you. Aside from DQ, the only charm oriented bosses are Persona 4's Kunino Sagiri, who can charm three members of your party at the same time (which isn't fun at all) and Bravely Default/Second's Ba'al Turtle Dove, who has a unique charm spell that causes a party member to fall so madly in love with another that they'll use the same moves as them (which makes for an interesting battle)
5:24 - Oh dear Lord I can just imagine how a situation with Astarte vs Amy would go... she beats the hell out of her and then proceeds to destroy Sonic with it for daring to fall for her magic. XD
I remember fighting that boss before. What I did differently though was that before I entered Astarte's room I removed all of Johnathan's gear and then just play as Charlotte (which I always did anyway). I know that sounds kinda dumb, but that was the best strategy I could think of back in the day.
I'm pretty sure I one-shotted her with Zionga or something like that, but I do remember using Charm on Demiurge and causing him to punch himself in the face, which caused his own attack to be reflected at... himself, somehow.
Something overlook is Illusion fist as this is a Boss rush weapon Jonathan having this weapon is funny since he just stare at you with random punch sound effect playing when charmed, (This does not work for the Doppelganger as He will still be able to use the fist unlike charmed Jonathan.)
Not a Charmer boss per se, but back when I played World of Warcraft, there was a boss in the Burning Crusade in the Shadow Labyrinth called Blackheart the Inciter. He was a two-headed ogre mage who had an ability called Incite Chaos. When he used it, you and your party would lose control of their characters and they would run around attacking each other briefly.
26:00 Hammer: Dracula, I'll send to hell! 26:03 Alucard: Father! Do you intend to make Mother weep even more from beyond the pale!? 26:06 Jonathan: Get a grip, Charlotte! You spend most of your time with a handsome guy next to you! BONUS: Albus: You will suffer to your last heartbeat, vampire!
Regarding "charming bosses" there's the Ancient Devil from Golden Sun:Dark Dawn, it can use an attack called Devil Sign that allows him to bring one of you characters on its side, a pretty nasty superboss that can also attack twice per turn and loves spamming the Haures summon that can inflict the poison status and deals lots of damage.
Imagine Alucard or Soma (instead of Richter and Jonathan) get charmed by Astarte and attacks their allies (prolly Yoko). Yes, suddenly, one of The Most Powerful Characters in Gaming Ever (on your side) become the one that oppose you, and the VERY HARD WAY. Now talk about karma for those who loves to use OP male character!
I am currently playing Portrait of ruin for the 1st time, and I`m at Astarte RN, trying to beat her as Jonathan 1st (without switching into Charlotte even to avoid the charming), it feels easy until she sends out the charming attack *right* when you`re in a position where its almost unavoidable. Beating her as Charlotte is easy mostly due to her slow strut, just fully charge up a spell with good range and decent damage till she comes near you, then blast it onto her once she is in range and quickly run away before her attacks hit you (Personally I have poisonous bubbles RN and its working wonders on bosses & enemies alike, and it works on Astarte quite well too). But as Jonathan.... hitting her and avoiding her attacks is not too hard, but that charm attack mostly comes out right at the worst moments.
I think most of the dragon quest charm things were how it was done...the charns that didn't work on all genders or guys were more flirty or chemical in a sense while the ones that did was pure charisma
Usually the charmer foe has magic powers that force people to work for them against their will, but in a more grounded fight I'd imagine that to be a possibility. The joke would get old pretty soon though, since the gag is kinda just "they're gay." Good for a game mechanic, however!
This reminds me of several annoying attacks from pokemon including: Attract, Sweet Kiss and Lovely Kiss (Last one inmediately causes target to fall asleep)
A charmer boss that I know is one from Marvels Ultimate Alliance 1 where you fight one of Thors enemies (Enchantress I believe) and she charms one of your characters into fighting your group. It wasn't the most interesting fight to me though when it comes to that world level as the way you beat Loki is interesting.
I'd like to point out the Long Spear in Portrait of Ruin is completely jacked for when it shows up. Not hard to find either, being just a two-star drop.
So since charm is basically manipulate the opposite gender character to do the boss's bidding, I wonder if there's a boss that use hypno powers to hypnotize the hero to fight his allies, ignoring their gender
I beat the boss with both chars. However, for Jonathan, I use mastered Shuriken instead. His subweapon will get stronger the more you use them. Mastered Shuriken not only deal more dmg, but also 2 more shurikens to throw, and it's super fast. The moment I use it, Astarte alreade took all 4. Not to mention, the higher you jump, the more range it can cover. Of course, it's super hard to use in airborne enemies. As for Charlotte, I can just keep the distance and use Gale Force (all wind spell deal slash dmg. It still scale with her INT, but deal physical dmg afterward).
The seductress, a common staple of folklore. Agents of SHIELD even had Lorelei who could control any man (thankfully never she got to use this power on the Avengers). One of those annoying double standards where a male seducer who could work irresistible charms on any female would come across as even more unwholesome... unless they happen to be James Bond, who only uses that power for good. There was also Goddess in Final Fantasy 6 with 'Love Token' to force a male party member to block hits for her. Annoying when her ultimate attack is a countdown to game over!

Speaking of enemies and bosses, has Git ever covered the enemy type of Mimics or gloss over them? Didn’t realize how common they were across different types of games.
You mean, like Metal Sonic, or more like Copy Robot? perhaps maybe even Shadow Link.
@@TheKorenji i think he means monsters that pretend to be chests
Eldoofus Yep. Certainly a lot of examples of it. Also a lot of surprising amount of treasure chest enemies that’d be interesting to cover. Know that they’re evident in Games that git likes in Vandal Hearts or Dragon quest games for instance.
Nioh has the best mimics.
LORD WES I did, but I also had that other enemy archetype in mind so I guess it works out.

What I learned from this video? Attract can be a very powerful move in various games
IIRC, you can actually snap Jon out of it by initiating the team attack (IIRC, it was called a dual crush, wasn't it?). Apparently, though he can't resist the legendary charms of this seducer... something compels him even more, and that's the awesomeness of executing a teamwork attack.

Ah, charming bosses... They can be a lot of trouble if you're not prepared.
Yeah.
I wish there were more charmer bosses who'd mind control ladies instead of men. That'd be an interesting twist on the old trope.
Or both at different intervals.
Dracula from Castlevania: Harmony of Despair has you covered. He can charm the ladies of the team with ease -- it's described as a powerful charisma.

I remember dying to Astarte a lot because I didn't realize I had to switch to Charlotte to avoid getting chamed.
There's also the Snow who guards the Alexander materia in FF7, although it's debatable whether she's actually a "boss" since Snows can also be encountered regularly. But the boss music plays for that particular one, so it counts!
There is a charmer boss in Final fantasy tactics advance, a game I'm surprised isn't on this channel, it's a mix of Final fantasy an vandal hearts, The charmer boss Charmed my entire team except for Marche, an he had to wallop my entire team an the boss by himself, it wasn't really fun but I won nonetheless.

@Chase Vaccaro You are now the chosen one, here to save the entire world!
In Icewind Dale 2 charm doesn't work very long on any character. But the nightmare begins, if paladin in your party sees charmed character... Of course, he will try to kill him/her. Worst part of it - he will try to kill that character even AFTER Charm wears out!
I like how Astarte kinda walks to the rythm of the music, looks menacing and badass! really cool boss fight
One of the most infuriating charming boss i've encountered as a kid was Lady viper in Denpa men 2

Jonathan
Charlotte.
My opinion of Astarte....... Frustrating. I mainly used Jonathan for fighting, and barely used Charlotte (R.I.P). However, this boss made this annoying, because of it's mechanic to charm Jonathan. I Ree at the thought of Astarte all the time.
that maria scream (when killed) is terrifying...
Finally some more Dragon Quest!
Please keep it up!
Another Charm Boss that is worth mentioning is Ishtar from SMT Strange Journey Redux.
She has two Moves that can cause charm and another move that kills anyone that is charmed , which also replenishes her health depending on how much HP the victims had.
And I'm assuming an ally using Diarahan on her is also a possibility?
@@VonFirflirch if have one yes

THE LESBIANS HAVE TO FIGHT HER
Charming women only? Oh, that's the job for the best admiral in the Valuan fleet, Vigoro! There's other games where gender has an effect, such as Ultros only targeting female with single target Tentacle attack in FF VI or trolls in Dragon's Dogma being excited at the view of a woman (or a man for their DLC variant)
3:37 Why does Whitney get all the credit? I found her piss easy! It’s Claire that’s the real threat of gen 2
I think it's because everyone complaining about how hard Whitney is only struggled against her because they were kids that kept spamming attacks.
A Castlevania whoisthisgit upload, on my birthday? This is a dream come true
Dragon Quest 6 and 7 allows you to use Puff-Puff by male characters and it's a damaging move scaled by level.

Yeah... but also, the fact that Charm is such a brutal Status in SJ hurts a lot

The armour is a lady if you watched the latest season of castlevenia. The viking dracula lady is wearing it and it's one heck of a badass armour.

I feel Dedede and Richter would be good pals when they realize how often they get possesed
Uh-oh.
Astarte can charm all male character in Castlevania harmony of despair including soma and alucard
Does that mean even Ganondorf would fall into Astarte's spell? I kinda doubt it.
But now that I think about it, they'd make a good couple.
I think most of the dragon quest charm things were how it was done...the charns that didn't work on all genders or guys were more flirty or chemical in a sense while the ones that did was pure charisma
I want to see more of these "attraction charmer" enemies and bosses fail because their target is homosexual. This isn't done NEARLY enough.
Usually the charmer foe has magic powers that force people to work for them against their will, but in a more grounded fight I'd imagine that to be a possibility. The joke would get old pretty soon though, since the gag is kinda just "they're gay." Good for a game mechanic, however!
@@speedslider3913 I don't mind if the joke gets old, because then it would be commonplace and I wouldn't have to say it wasn't being done enough.
This reminds me of several annoying attacks from pokemon including: Attract, Sweet Kiss and Lovely Kiss (Last one inmediately causes target to fall asleep)
That fight....I would advise you not to use Johnathan but.....
Tbh surprised the Siren from Darkest Dungeon didn't make an appearance here. Cool video tho.
A charmer boss that I know is one from Marvels Ultimate Alliance 1 where you fight one of Thors enemies (Enchantress I believe) and she charms one of your characters into fighting your group. It wasn't the most interesting fight to me though when it comes to that world level as the way you beat Loki is interesting.
got in so early video's still at 360p lmao. anyway very good video as always!
19:50 wow that guitar riff
A mini boss in persona 5 has an ability to charm the girls on the group with 100% succes rate, due to being the shadow of a man who picks up girls and plays with them like objects
