I trap problem Beaver (ADC Trapper), that drop trees on houses & cars, or flood the property. They usually try getting the beaver out themselves first before they call me.
When I go to a job, they want all the Beaver GONE! So the last places I hit is the dens and the dam. I pick them off away from those areas first with slide, cross over and caster mound sets. Making them think the den is the safest place for them to be. Then when I start catching less beaver, it's time to hit the dam with 1 or 2 daymbreak sets, and start doing den sets.
The problem with hitting the dens first is that they see little Johnny and the other kits smashed in a body grip trap, you can trap shy an entire colony the first few nights, then you won't catch anything in a Bilisle the rest of the time on that pond. Although it seems you don't have that problem.
But I will pick them off 1 by 1 like that, so that by the time you go for the dens, there is only 1 or 2 left in there and much easier to catch that way. Only use the body grip traps in the last phase. Then too, many times I use a body grip first, then snares to take out the very last beaver in there. Once they're coming out of the shoot, it's kind of hard for them to stop when they see the snare and get nailed everytime. I guarantee I get 100% of the beaver before I leave, and so far I have got every single beaver in a colony. It's a winning strategy.
I know it's hard to trap away from the dens or lodge when it's all iced over, but that strategy should work quite well for you in the spring & fall.

I usually stop about 2 weeks after ice out. They start getting rubbed and bit up

How late into the season do you trap? I'm from montana our season goes till may. Will the hides be any good then?
