Just another great docu about Fountain. I try to watch 'em all. Reggie is a genius and a hero. I am a die hard Donzi guy, I like the Cigarette. But if I had it all to Do Over, I'd have a Fountain. That Dog Can Hunt.
It's pretty clear...no one...I repeat no one has done for offshore powerboating what Reggie Fountain has done The man has taken it to a new level and takes on ALL challengers. He makes no excuses, typically because he doesn't need to, but without a doubt, he has given more to our sport than any other single person or group of people....PERIOD.
Don't kid yourself these cats had high dollar equipment in them. No one builds a boat like these and not to try and be number one. Grant you it was probaly a stacked deck with the Fountain , but the boats that tried were top notch. Reggie has his shit together on any given day he will be a factor at any event.
I was at this run myself, and that boat was very fast! Reggie can be over the top and I can understand how people got upset at this little PR stunt. Speed Racer did break and was running smaller pulleys to run pump gas and he wasn't too happy about being in this vid. Also, notice the boat more closely, it's really a 46', they cut off the beak as it created too much bow lift.
This was a while ago but a run against what is a worked up pure Factory Raceboat and a bunch of semi racers without mechanics to fix and adjust everything that needs fixing isnt a fair race. I thought Reggie was an awesome guy but let's run it fair today. It would be tooooo funny.

What's the fastest pleasure boat going that day!! 120-130 mph!! Call each manufacturer up (outer limits, mti, skater etc) and you get 6 months to build an awesome race boat!! I Don't care a pleasure go-fast is different than a professional go fast boat!!
MTI and OL don't need 6 months to build a Fountain killer. MTI blew the deck cleats off the Fountain that day, and OL STILL holds the world V bottom speed record at 180.41.
Ok for the people that don't know go and look at the records and championships Fountain is the best. Go to any race or poker run there cam be 100 boats and 1 Fountain guess what boat everyone wants to out run,,, the Fountain! Fountain sets the standard! Love him or hate him Reggie Fountain has done more for racing than any other! Also the race at the Ozark is a lake race not offshore racing...big difference! It gives the cats a big advantage, Watch that cat killer in rough seas cat people AArrrr
The big cats like my buddys 46' skater 1996 with twin 1800hp turbines will do 165gps open cockpit seats 6 has a cabin with two queen size beds, and a head, That boat will do a 100 to 110 in real 6 footers , the boats weight is 13,000lbs in 3 to 4 footers you could fall a sleep at 100. which is its cruise speed thats a 1/4 throttle. a small cat under 30 feet will have troubles in 6 footers
Like others have said, this is pure apples to oranges right here. Cool vid but a race boat vs poker runners of course it's going to pull the win. Not to mention the fact it probably has at least 5 to 700+ MORE HP then the rest of the boats in the run. I respect Fountain alot but lets be honest... all things being equal in the power department, a Cat/Skater or MTI will come out on top.

It maybe a fast boat, but these guys aren't racers. even if the amateurs had better equipment they dont have a team of mechanics to fix it or necessarily the balls to top their stuff out
It was a PR stunt, nothing more. Everyone knows with equal power or less a cat will out run a v. Although, a 170mph v hull is still pretty cool. It is sad Fiore is not with us anymore, I enjoyed seeing the rivalry between him and Reggie.
He raced a bunch pleasure boats that were on a poker run not racing. I would like to see how it would do against CMS Racing where the owner is not concerned about burning up one of his $250,000.00 motors and with a professional driver and throttleman..
Back in the 80s he wasnt even on the circuit ...cat boats always dominated the race scene..sure In rougher water a v bottom will handle better, but the cat can hold a better average mph in all weather conditions...cats are always 20 to 30 mph faster
In case everyone didn't already know, a Fountain RACE boat with twin 1550hp Sterlings is faster than almost any POKER RUN boat. Reggie, why didn't you race your "cat killer" against the Bacardi Silver Skater that uses 1500hp Sterlings? Is it because that boat does 202mph and your "cat killer" does 179? I guess that comparison wouldn't be an effective marketing excercise...
When all the faster boats are on their trailer? What do you exactly know about boats since you make that statement? Names like Predator, Pure Platinium, My Way, Jet Set, and many, many others ring a bell? Heck Dustin Whipples new OL 43SV will probably top out at 161-162 and that is an open cocpit vee with genset, aircon, full cabin ect. and it seats 5. FPM does not currently have a model, so Reggie is pretty much out untill he builds a boat himself, ie. not build by Skater like Cat Killer was.

lmao all these boats were high performance boats whether they were a cat or the "cat killer" but the fountain is on a whole other level of high performance...take a ford mustang and a lamborghini, they are both fast cars but the lamborghini is a much faster car and is built for higher performances and speeds than the mustang is...just saying not exactly the most fair race, however i still love fountains.
I believe it had 1500s or 1550s. Gino's top speed before he sold it was 195. There is NO WAY that Fountain could touch that cat. The physics of twin hulls with the compression tunnel to lift the stern doesn't lie.

Kind of a moot comparison. We all know that modern cats are faster and can take chop just about as well as a vee. That being said, I still prefer a vee as a pleasure boat. I prefer them aesthetically, they're more usable/functional, and I just prefer the way they feel. Not to say I dislike cats, because that is far from the truth. It's just personal preference.
Well i am a "V" guy but the thing that bothers me the most about this is the fact that he is comparing a full blown race boat to family pleasure sport boats.. i would like to see hime compare this boat to boats like spirit of qatar that has a top speed of 244mph !! or ms geico who has a top speed of 210mph... i know that "V" bottom boat do handle in the chop but the thing is if this boat was in nomal chop against cats then "cat killer" will become CAT FOOD. and this is my opinion and i am a "V" guy...

Oh year, and let's finish off with the bogus speed claims. How come that most fountains sold from 2000 up until the company went bust, cannot reach the speeds printed on the speed charts? Yup, that's right. Not only do they run the boat in the morning down stream on the fast running Pamlico river, they have the boat so low on fuel that it is not uncommon for them to tow the boats back after speed testing. Also, they usually ran a prop with a higher pitch and removed spacers from the drive, which were then installed just prior to delivery along with smaller wheels. I've driven no less than three 35 Lightnings that when set up as done per factory specs for speed runs, could not even get on plane with two people on board and a half tank of fuel. That's shafting both buyers, the press and competitors. And then there's the Mercury 700SCI engines in 38 Lightnings that was stock, but for some odd reason, ran to 6100 rpm. Reggie did a lot of interesting things in his prime, but that's well and far gone. Stop drinking the Kool-Aid.
But this was bogus, they brought a racing coupe to a poker run. It's not even a contest. If you put a racing cat against that fountain, the fountain would get left behind.
this is a very nice boat and a fast one but it was going against pleasure boats put this think up against race turbine cats and there is no way it will be able to hang with them a very nice boat though
why would you bring a coupe to a poker run, coupes are faster because there is less drag when their is a top on a boat, also that fountain was a race boat, those other ones were not
No but Gino was there with his 44MTI and he ran down the "cat killer" and killed it. I saw the video of Gino's big speed run in Biscayne Bay and the GPS said 193. Reggie has never come close to that speed with any of his boats. That vid might still be up idk...
Hello David, just like always the cats got beat and now we hear the excuses. The point is, if you brag that you have a 180mph boat, you had better be able to back that up with a 180mph run. Factory race boat or not, 180 is 180. They did not back up their end. Maybe next time the cats will get their factory boats there and we'll see the same result. Fountain vee's are the best in the world and they have proven it time and time again.
Reggie's boat had 2x1550. Gino's boat had the same. Reggie ran 177 in his Kilo record run. Gino ran 195 in a shakedown cruise on Biscayne Bay that's an 18mph differential in the cat's favor. Reggie can't beat the MTI in a Kilo run, or any other speed challenge for that matter.
Your comparing a v hill to a cat. Apples and oranges. Either way 170+ in a v hull is incredible. If Reggie would've involved himself in catamaran building his cats would be the fastest. You can see the influence his designs have made in all the major boat builders. It's all based off of fountain

The 43 Outerlimits ran 180.41 with Merc 1650s. That number is STILL the fastest ever run by a V bottom and it was a pleasureboat.

I don't think Reggie has ever built a trips boat. They're all staggered engines. The only triple engine Fountain I know of is a 3x1350hp 47 in Sweden.

Put the Fountain up against a cat with the same power and it will still lose. V bottoms don't have the hydrodynamics to run with the cats.

No but Gino was there with his 44MTI and he ran down the "cat killer" and killed it. I saw the video of Gino's big speed run in Biscayne Bay and the GPS said 193. Reggie has never come close to that speed with any of his boats. That vid might still be up idk...
Hello David, just like always the cats got beat and now we hear the excuses. The point is, if you brag that you have a 180mph boat, you had better be able to back that up with a 180mph run. Factory race boat or not, 180 is 180. They did not back up their end. Maybe next time the cats will get their factory boats there and we'll see the same result. Fountain vee's are the best in the world and they have proven it time and time again.

Reggie's boat had 2x1550. Gino's boat had the same. Reggie ran 177 in his Kilo record run. Gino ran 195 in a shakedown cruise on Biscayne Bay that's an 18mph differential in the cat's favor. Reggie can't beat the MTI in a Kilo run, or any other speed challenge for that matter.
Your comparing a v hill to a cat. Apples and oranges. Either way 170+ in a v hull is incredible. If Reggie would've involved himself in catamaran building his cats would be the fastest. You can see the influence his designs have made in all the major boat builders. It's all based off of fountain
