  • A few months ago I bought these cheap 12v Diesel heaters to put in our Little tiny home (School bus). And I will be honest, I am quite happy with them! They pull very low power and diesel is a dry heat so there is no moisture build-up. Totally worth the $120

    You should just put the diesel heater's fuel line like 1/4 from the bottom of the tank, so you can't completely empty it just running the heater.
    Also, replace the fuel line with hard tubing. That green soft tubing can collapse from the vacuum, and stop the flow.

      Yeah they both are a little short from touching the bottom. the back one will shut off first then the second one gives me about 5 gallons left.

      My bus mechanic says not to run any vehicle under 10% to empty, as it slowly damages fuel pump. Have no idea if this is true, except that he's a fairly knowledgeable dude.

      @@DadMoves If you have an in-tank pump, yes. The pump is cooled by fuel and it will absolutely burn out if you run the tank dry too much. If you have a mechanical fuel pump, nah. That's cooled by the engine oil. If it's an external electric (In-line, almost never seen in a factory fuel system), then it's air cooled.

      I thought about it but it ventilates well down there with all the open air and once its running you dont smell anything at all.

      @@BackroadPurpose Retired Firefighter here, he is VERY correct, move/plumb the exhaust to the exterior of the bus!!!!! Carbon monoxide can be cumulative or it can kill you in one night! It will seep in through places you can't possible imagine! Please, just plumb it to the outside edge of the bus!!!

    Had tons of problems running these heater in my semi until I put a check valve on the tip of my tank pick up tube .
    Now it works very well

    I have 2 diesel heaters in my bus , one on each end . My insulation isnt finished yet but I can get by most of the time running them 1 at a time . I've had several nights around 0° and have kept it in the mid 60s all night . For the price and what they do , they are amazing little heaters . I do keep an extra metering pump on hand , that is the only thing I've had to replace so far ,,, twice

      For sure! We havent slept in ours yet to see how well what we want to keep the temp at but Ive usually walked into the bus and it reads around 65. We have a small hallway on the left hand side that really helps seperate the front from the back. and then we deleted about 6 windows in the back so I know that helped for sure.

      Mount your pump vertically as they lubricate from the diesel so when on their side the piston has a dry spot at the top hope this helps

    I fixed my gas cans wit EZ-Pour gas Spouts. And a truck tire valve stem for a vent. They have a larger size with an extension hose that should be big enough to reach your tank. I 1st saw this on Farm Show Magazine so I wanted to give them credit for sharing this great idea. It’s a little bit tricky to install the valve stem (a metal coat hanger or a piece of baling wire to get it in position ) the can empties really quick and it seals well. YOU WILL LOVE IT I PROMISE! THIS CHRISTMAS I PLAN ON MAKING A FEW OF THESE CAN FOR MY CLOSE FRIENDS WHO HAUL GAS FOT THEIR MOWERS. they also make a small nozzle that is great for chain saws and weed eaters.

    If you cover the windshield. During the cold weather you could set the heater to a lower setting to save on fuel

    *Install was easy **fireplace.homes** good although I personally had some difficulty with the thermostat I had. Issue was mine though, not realizing that electric heaters couldn't use oil thermostats. Tip: If you are using an external thermostat, run the power to the thermostat, not the unit. Once that was squared away it worked great.*

    Shorten your pickup tube for the heater and leave yourself at least five gallons in the tank
    Look into the heater upgrades like routing your exhaust through and old fashion steam radiator or a bucket of sand and install a real thermostat.
    It'll greatly improve efficiency and fuel use
    Tap you heater exhaust through your bus exhaust.

    gutted bus's are super spacious, my dad friend used one for his construction company as a job sight storage/etc and thing was big inside

    You can use corn oil mixed with your fuel, 👍,, even used motor oil,,,,. Wrapping copper tubing around the exhaust for a little hot water in the morning 🌄, works real well. Godspeed on your way 🫡

    All you had to do is add an extra tank buddy and an extra lid. So when you fill up the bus up you can fill it up

    A light blocking curtain in the middle of the bus would cut down on your heating cost because it wouldn't have to use as much to heat the area if you're not in the front half or just reversed you know

    that was water vapor , not pollution/smog fog coming out of your pipe on the start up. a majority of burned petrol fuel is actually converted into water.

    Alot of newer semi trucks come with one of these. I drive a 2018 Freightliner and it works great.. I have thought about putting one of these in my '28 RV I live in FT.. but bought a mini-split. It too can run off solar, but it's a heater, air conditioner and dehumidifier all in one. Almost got it installed today but it should be up and running tomorrow.

    I realize this is almost 3 years ago, but some one may be able to use this.
    Something to consider is a bulk diesel delivery. It looks like a fuel oil truck, but different! lol If your oil/propane company doesn't have this service, then they will know someone who will. You might be SOL if you have natural gas. The yellow pages would be a great resource if this was 20 years ago.
    A 60 gallon delivery may not be cost worthy, but having an oil/diesel tank next to the bus will give you a larger delivery and you can transfer with a transfer pump or gravity if the tank bottom is even slightly higher than the bus tank. You may need permits, or even fire department approval for this so do your homework.
    If the tank lays horizontal, and the height of the two tanks are similar, you may be able to run a line between the two and they will equalize by themselves. Put the aux tank lower if you want some warning to call for a refill, or higher if you want equalization automation action.
    Is there an spot open on the frame to mount another tank or tanks?
    You may be better off having a valved fuel line and have the advantage of using an external tank exclusively. Off road diesel or home heating oil (which both are dyed red) may be a nice savings for you.. In all honesty. since it's an RV, you're not likely to have a trooper or an inspector look to see what is in your tank so you could likely skip that added complexity.

    I am on my third Chinese diesel heater if you take both exhaust together in series it's a lot quieter also the fan is strong enough to feed it into a port it's each other rooms

    Great little heater's the pump they come with ain't very good and the glow plug screens can be to thick and develop starting issues but once you sort the bugs out they are very reliable change the fuel filter every winter and bingo no issues so far.

    That exhaust smoke you got going on when lighting it up is actually the combustion chamber has a good amount of deposits inside I have a feeling that you are not running these machines hot for a solid five minutes before you’re done with them
    You should not see any smoke or any audible noise like a jet engine winding up when you’re leaving the airport to go on the runway if you have any audible noise or smoking like that you need to give them a good solid five minutes of burning hot when you shut them off if you’re sleeping The bus overnight they’re going to idle down quite a bit which will allow tar to form if you want to know what that’s like just burn olive oil and you’ll see how black and nasty it gets and don’t get it on your fingers because it doesn’t come off that’s the same thing that will happen inside when is the next day and you’re waking up from inside their run them five minutes full blast in the beginning of your day it will save you a lot of grief
    And yes I have experience with this as a professional driver that’s traveled across the United States using various different types of bunk heaters as espar webasto and air Tronic these are the main brands out there that sell for over $1000 the big boys very expensive to replace parts depending on what it is the Chinese diesel heaters are modeled after these
    As far as the fuel situation goes if you cannot add another tank or you are not willing I would highly suggest that you shorten your The fuel tubes feeding your heaters that way you were guaranteeing yourself that even if you left them running you will be able to move that vehicle no matter what Basically making your life a lot easier that you may lose heat but you’ll be able to run the vehicle and get to a fuel station
    My personal humble safety observations
    As far as the exhaust goes that’s unsafe one because the exhaust is not venting outside the vehicles actually being trapped underneath heat rises the exhaust coming out I think it’s a few hundred degrees maybe 400 it’s diesel fuel remember that second the other thing is where you have it mounted is also unsafe because if that tire blows out your steer tire that could cause bigger problems when you’re going down the road
    One last thing never put fuel lines next to a very hot source dangerous conditions can happen you never know if one of your lines gets a pinhole leak or somewhere in that vicinity of the fuel tank you have a vapor problem that is venting in that area the only reason I mention that is fueling diesel tanks especially in certain rate conditions can give you a lot of diesel fuel vapors and if it’s the right amount of oxygen God help us all big boom
    If you have skipped to the end or read my whole comment remember this carbon monoxide is a silent killer they still find drivers dead in trucks because of it when I used to drive out there I had carbon monoxide alarms out the tail pipe in the truck no pun intended and I always check the exhaust to make sure that it was venting properly and that it was secured and sticking out from underneath the cab I didn’t care if people saw it safety first

      Thanks for the words. I really appreciate it. I will say that the lines are not close to a heat source and that the area outside is pretty well ventilated and that we also have a carbon monoxide detector just in case.

      @@BackroadPurpose His comment has nothing to do with location of fuel lines or ventilation, what he is referring to is doing a proper shutdown of the heater. If not done correctly fuel builds up in the chamber making it smoke or not start the next time you want to use it!

      Definitely shorten the lines so they don't go to the bottom of the tank. And you should Always have at least one 5 gallon metal Jerry can of every fuel you need at home. Dump it into your vehicle and refill it every 6 moths at least, 1 year at most, with fuel for storage. Use ethanol-free gas for storage, no matter what you normally use in your car.
      Plastic gas cans are microporus and allow fumes to leak through their walls even when sealed. You'll see the loss in volume over time, but the fumes are the bigger issue.
      Lastly, buying a battery powered fuel transfer pump will save you some hassle. You can leave you gas can on the ground, press a button and fill your vehicle ✌️

    Pull your tube out a inch or two so you have enough fuel to get the the station when the heater dies

    You should’ve put some tuct tape on the seams of the ceiling. Probably would’ve helped with making it air tight and kept in some of that heat.

      Duct tape has no R value so the heat/cold will just travel though. If it was wind. yeah I could see it helping...

      It’s called tuct tape in Canada and we use it to seal up our houses. We use a lot of duct tape too i guess. Lol.

    Hope you've since invested in a few or even one decent funnel that works.... Get one with the adjustable flow and screen mesh ... Then make yourself a tank holder... easy peezy...one piece unit that you can rest the tank on at an angle ....you won't have to stress your arm and hand. and won't drip.. Not cool leaving fuel on the ground.. otherwise put something to catch it.. K ! Thanks Nice work looks great !

    2:48 man, I’ve been there with running diesel vehicles out of fuel. If your heater sucked the fuel then your fuel lines on the bus should still be full of fuel and it should start without priming.

    You have a ( big) fire risk running the exhaust through the same hole as the fuel pipe. There’s enough heat coming off the heater exhaust to cook the fuel line

      Hmm thanks for the insight. Fire does need spark to ignite. If the fuel line were to melt, the heater would shut off due to lack of fuel. but this is also have the manufacture said to install.

      No, any material can auto-ignite if gets hot enough. Diesel engines work without spark plugs.
      If that exhaust gets hot enough, that fuel line can ignite and start a fire.

      @@BackroadPurpose mate the manufacturer is Chinese, health and safety doesn't exist,and should the fuel line melt and leak diesel on your wooden floor is it really worth the risk ,theres some serious heat from that exhaust I know I've burnt my finger on mine

    I know at places like HD has these sheets of styrofoam, not sure R value though that would easily go on te ceiling.
    I am looking at the Wabasto USA built, reviews are much favorable all around on it, quality, reliability etc.
    The extra is to me, worth the cost rather then needing to get repair pieces for the other brand the requires More money and trips somewhere to get a part and being out heat for days-weeks etc.
    Watched plenty of videos the evidence is convincing to step up to one.

    these heaters come in different BTU's 2000,3000,5000, 8000kw. which is about 6800, 10k, 17k, and 27k BTu. upto about 100 square feet - the basic 2kw heater will likely do, 100-200 square feet the 3k will do, 200-300 is the 5k, and up to 500 square feet is the 8k. Now in area's of extreme cold, -40f, where you have little insulation in your bus and windows everywhere. a single 8kw heater will still handle 360 square feet. and a 5kw will still handle up to 240 square feet.

      @@BackroadPurpose Yep, 2nd is a good emergancy back up, also good for "spreading the heat" if you don't have duct systems set up. and finally again, in area's where it just hovers around 10f you might not need the same heat output as in area's where it goes to -40f

    Just buy a cheap fuel syphon hose and and make a little shelf or something to hold your fuel tanks up wile syphoning way easier and less messy then trying to pour those 5 gallon tanks I do It for my boat and snowmobiles all the time

      Not a bad idea! I think I may end up getting one of those drill water pumps and just hook it up when I need it. Those things seem to do a decent job.

    I'm interested in the workings of a diesel heater.....are they noisy as they work and what keeps them going? Do they use a glow coil ....or continually relying on electricity ? Just asking thanks

    Few 1/2”’ sheets foam insulation of the windows will save you dozens gallons diesel

    Cut your heater fuel pickup higher. The heater will run out of fuel while leaving a certain amount in the tank.

    We have a toy hauler and I use a hand pump with hoses and leave the fuel can on the ground. Took way too much fuel waste and cuss words over our crappy safety can..

    If you install a diesel heater at each end of your motorhome and lower the hurtz rate significantly causing fuel savings of 1/2 or more of what your using now. This would allow amazing efficiency. You'd save 1/2 your current consumption and put money back into other projects.

    140 dollars a month to heat the bus in winter not bad considering if you were living in a home you'd be paying for fuel prices plus electrical price. Witch could be 300 dollars a month in the winter plus rent. Think about it that's not bad.

    Love the videos! Did putting a heater in the back of the bus cause any issues due to the length of the fuel line? Wondering if mine will work toward the back while being tapped into the diesel tank toward the front.

      It did when I put the fuel pump further away but I fixed it by moving it close to the tank and getting a harder fuel line.

    Lol, not even a few seconds in and I gave you a like. Why? Because I did exactly the same thing, in reverse. I own yellow diesel cans and nothing diesel (yet) and put regular gas in them. lol. They were on sale and the red ones were not, what can I say?! Hehehe. Liked and subbed, I thought your video was wonderful and you're a cool guy. There's nothing wrong with being proud of your work and showing it off and you are humble enough already, that no, it does NOT come off as cocky whatsoever.
    So, the big question, is, how is it going now with the heater? Reliable or have you even had to use it since last season? I would like to know because of the comparison of propane (which is in a shortage right now and expensive and not as efficient as diesel heaters), but less moving parts and potential to fail, vs. an actual motor. I've heard it is wise to have a few spare glow plugs at the very least, but what other things have you noticed might be a good replacement part to keep on hand, just in case?

    Just curious - I grew up in Maine where homes frequently are heated with No. 2 fuel oil which amounts to "diesel" (I am told). Diesel fuel for vehicles has a road tax which is not insignificant. Would it be less expensive to run No. 2 fuel oil in the diesel heaters rather than vehicle diesel? You would need a separate tank to legally do this. I gather the difference between the two fuels is that the vehicle diesel has a far lower sulfur content (probably an emissions thing), while heating oil doesn't have that concern. From what I read, the fuels can be used interchangeably. However, to remain "legal," the diesel vehicle fuel would need to be in the regular bus fuel tank and the less expensive heating oil in a separate tank. Again, this is just what I gather from reading online. It might be something to look into to save a few bucks. Nice video, BTW! Good luck!

      I pay less for road diesel when I need to go grab my own as opposed to having #2 oil delivered. But, the trade off is that I have to go get it myself 10 gallons at a time...lol

    dang bro.......i get 30 hours on 1 gallon of fuel in my 28' camper! put reflectix "silver bubble wrap insulation" on your windows. i personally do not use reflectix bran i got mine from home depot for 1/2 the price

    How do you prevent the diesel fuel from freezing/gelling? I'm concerned.
    Since this happens as high as 32F/0C.
    Do you use additives?

      When you buy your fuel, ask if it has been blended for the winter. If not or if they don't know, use additive per the directions on the bottle.
      If you travel from Southern climates to Northern climates, remember that the fuel you just bought may not be treated.
      You can use Motorkote, Power Service, Howe's, etc. I recommend Motorkote, I used it for years and they are very small bottles.
      If you use Power Service, DO NOT use the red strictly for your diesel heater. If your fuel lines to the engine gel up, then use it as recommended on the bottle. DO NOT OVERUSE! Engines, fuel systems, and after treatment devices really don't like over use of this stuff.

    The fuel pump only makes noise cause you have it secured to the metal, if u let them hang there almost silent.

      It's held in place by a rubber bracket so I think it's just the lift in the pump making the noise.

    i'm in a tiny house and heat with wood . every year i look at these diesel heaters for maybe back-up heating . do they turn on and off with a thermostat by themselves with temperature change ? or turn then on and off all done manually?

      They never fully turn off with the thermostat but they do fluctuate volume. I think having a wood stove at night and then turning this on in the morning is the way to go. Takes the chill off and heats everything up oretty fast. Then get that fire cranking!

    I will not trust my life to the China diesel heater. And if were going to use one will not have it inside living space. Replace all the hoses first off and use real clamps and a fuel filter. Good you pull fuel from exterior tank. I find if you use the tank it comes with inside any enclosure. Well lets say I hope you like the diesel fuel smell. It never goes away.

      Yeah plus it has been crazy cold and we didn't have anything insulating the windows. Now we have refletix material and it seems to help a bunch. At least with the ac.

    no hate but no prase. no thumb up or down here's why. the learning curve is needed. I have one thing to say to help you. hope you read this ... remove the OEM/ original bus windows they are trash. you can add better windows even house windows in a bus. (NOTE) never done this but I did ride a bus in the winter and the windows are a stay away from object in transport in the winter. to help anymore please keep the rear bus heater in to help compensate and not need to use more diesel to heat your home/etc. it will cute costs please understand you have a way to don't make it harder than it needs to add never subtract till you try it out.

      Thanks for the notes. The oem windows arent great but we left them in and with our insulation solutions everything works well. Yeah we use the rear heater at night the front during the day. Working well so far.

    Which power rating are your two heaters for that bus? I have a TINY camper - the size of a 90s station wagon, I think the 2kw models would be too much on low but I'll just have to find out, I guess.

      We have two 5kw heaters. Not sure the size of your camper but our 35ft bus could be done by 1 heater with our insulation and space.

      @@BackroadPurpose your bus is 3x longer than my tiny caravan, and probably 25% wider and 3x or 4x taller, so area is likely ~6-7x more area, so I'd likely need 0.5kw max I guess. Thanks :-)

    _Your biggest loss of heat is your windows! You had me laughing when you said: these safety latches suck! At the same time, I said myself: yes, they do! Side note I had my diesel heaters for three-season now and have performed well, with no issues!_

      Yeah we plan on making/getting some hefty shades/curtains to help with the insulation factor. im sure it will make a big difference. and LoL. they do suck! Such a pain in the butt lol

      I burn a litre of kero every 500 hours or so and this heats the screen, glow plug and combustion chamber and I get about 2500 to 3000 hours out of a unit until it needs a strip down service. I have two of the 8kw version and have a rebuilt for immediate replacement if one fails. These heaters are excellent and very easy and cheap to service, I even rebuild the motors with new brushes and bearings. Mine use about 0.2 litres per hour running at maximum output. This service life could vary in different countries because of the quality of the diesel but if you run the heater for 10 - 15 minutes at maximum output this helps to keep the carbon buildup at a minimum. I carry a spare gasket set , glow plug and screen for basic servicing and they are available as a kit. I have used the airtronic D2 heaters and they work well but are very expensive to purchase and service. I can buy seven 8kw Chinese heaters for the same price as one German heater and the motors can't be serviced easily. Great heaters for the purpose!

      @@peterclancy3653 _Good to know, thanks! I always carry spare parts, and I just took my diesel heater out to open it, clean it, service it, and inspect all parts. To my surprise, there was hardly any carbon build-up with the burn unit! The glow plug was great, no signs of wear, did replace the atomizer screen, had to, I didn't do a good job taking it out, no biggie was going to replace it anyway! Then added some diesel Kleen cetane boost additive in the 5 gallon tank, about 4ozs' It the first time using it in the diesel heater. I'll let you know that stuff works during the regular operation of the heater! Oh, one more thing, I replace my LCD screen; the other one gets a bit wonky, but keeping it handy just in case I need to use it to shut the diesel heater off if the other one goes out!_

      Alan Osborne thanks for that. When I purchased these heaters there were three sizes 2, 5 and 8 kw advertised and there was little difference in price and the fuel consumption was very similar to our 2Kw airtronic from Germany . The main reason I went Chinese is the cost , $200 compared to over $2000 for a German heater. Also spare parts were very expensive, $ 36 for gasket service kit from England for an airtronic compared to Chinese $8 for a pack of 5 gaskets postage free. Our diesel in Australia is not too good so the cost of rebuilding is a big factor for me. I recently bought 4 blower fans for my airtronics from china they cost me about $25 each complete and the same blower motor cost me $174 from England ( closest supplier before Chinese heaters) it has been a bit of a learning curve to understand all the malfunctions of these heaters but the German service manual is very good and I do have a plug in analyser that connects to a lap top to find faults. When I ordered parts for my 8 Kw heater I was given the option of 2, 5 and 8 to get the right size blower motors and I know the 8 Kw motor is quite a bit bigger than the 2 Kw motor but I have not compared it to a 5 Kw but it would not surprise me if they were the same! I guess you get what you pay for! All these heaters work really well though and are definitely worth the money. Thanks again for your comment.

    1:23 - EXACTLY why I hate using CARB approved gas cans. They made all these regulations to gas cans to prevent spilling but the approved design leaks more than non-CARB approved gas cans. Too funny!

    We have one wired up on our old stone house here in Scotland in the UK. It provides a heat boost in the cold mornings whilst our woodburner is warming up. We've had it about a year with no issues and only run it at 2.4 rather than the full 5.4, saves so much fuel.

    Might be a good idea to run the heaters of a seperate tank ? Then you could run agricultural diesel that costs half the price of regular diesel ? or you could mix 50/50 with kerosine that is even cheaper ? I do that in UK . Best regards Paul .

    Hello, I just subscribed and definitely digging the bus conversion!! But hey i have a question.....i Just purchased the same diesel heater for my little truck camper and i have no place really to install it where the exhaust and intake can stick through the floor so i planned to remove the old propane heater and build a shelf to install the heater on below the closet and then have the exhaust come down a few inches and then 90 and stick it out the side of the camper. So, the question is do you think that's dangerous? Or if i seal the exhaust connection with high temp liquid gasket, do you think it would seal up and be fine?
