Those huge sprue gates are not an old kit thing they are indeed an AMT thing. There are plenty of contemporary, decent Japanese kits from Hasegawa, Tamiya etc. Heck even Monogram had finer sprue attachment points then these AMT jobs. There's really no excuse for those molds AMT did. I think they really got their act together when it came to the Star Wars Phantom Menace kits, where they had much finer sprue attachments, better fit, and better detail but by then they were kind of on the tail end of the business.
