Followed Can Am racing back in the 70's. These machines screamed through the course. The sound those velocity stacks pumped out screamed speed. Thanks for the memories!!
I'm an old man and I haven't raced in many years but watching this with the sound turned up brought a full smile to my face from the the time he finished his warm up laps to the end of his session . Thanks , Mark Battista
It's good mate. Im 55 and look at the old stuff. They were brave and fast. I watch the v8 supper cars here in Australia. Good racing but lower speeds They put safety first i spous
Seems like it ended way too soon! I couldn't watched that onboard stuff for hours. I LOVED this era of racing. I remember watching them at Mid-Ohio where I grew up.
Mechanical fuel injection back then was either the engine at idle, or at full acceleration, with little in-between. It could be a reason why mechanical fuel injection was not suitable for street vehicle use.
Denny Hulme won the Can-Am race back in 1967 on this same course in a similar car; his was a M6A model. Bruce McLaren had a rare DNF from mechanical problems in that same race. The race covered 200 miles/321 kilometers with *no fuel stops and no tire changes.*
Wonderful to see these beautiful old cars used for their original use...racing. be easy on them. try not to prang them but Exercise them on occasion Thank you for sharing
I am sure it is more fun than legally allowed! I was at the "Glen" for the '67 or '68 FI race. Bruce McLaren was running the Ford Indy motor in his car. It didn't seem to perform well. At the end of the race, Bruce gets out of his car and helps his crew member push the car to the paddock! Quite a guy, must have been real down to earth.
Gosh I am going to miss the Brian Redman international challenge. New sponsor The Hawk, vintage weekend I have been going there every single year since age 2. I am going to miss it this year but I love these cars they are my favorite.
You can look this up for verification, but the McLaren M6B was a 1967 model. Puzzling why cssutherland had the video title card saying it was a 1966 model . . . as the real 1966 model, the McLaren M1B, looked more like a barge when compared to the M6B seen in this video. You can check for verification of the 1966 Can Am season for the images of the cars that ran that season. I followed the Can Am series back then. The McLaren team in '67 ran with a 358 cubic inch/5.9 liter Chevy engines in the McLaren M6A model. Other teams, such as the Jim Hall Chaparral with the 2E, and on occasion the Roger Penske Lola T70 (driven by Mark Donohue), ran with the 427 cubic inch/7 liter Chevy engine. Two advantages the McLaren M6A that the McLaren team ran in '67 (as the M6B were production models sold to other teams for the '68 season) was with aerodynamics and wheel hubs designed for extra-wide wheel rims. The wheel hubs for the extra-wide rims allowed McLaren to use the widest possible race tires Goodyear could manufacture at the time. Other teams tried copying McLaren with mounting the wide rims on the Lola T70s, with many of them suffering from wheel bearing failures and wheel hub problems. Another reason McLaren ran away with the '67 Can Am season was the fact that the competitors were still using 1966 model year racers: The Lola T70 and Chaparral 2E.
LOL in the high speed corners it seemed like you were pointing the steering wheel in the opposite direction of the corner for most of the time. These machines are just too insane.
Wow cars back than were no joke, believe it or not cars nowadays are I think slower because of many reasons but you know, life is life, na-na-na-na-na. Sorry that song just randomly popped out of my head.
yes, i guess you never have to use 1st on Elkhart Lake, but i asked that cause i think i only saw him using 3 gears ( 2nd to 4th ). maybe i'm wrong...
I could be wrong, but I think there is a very short paddock gear used for getting to and from the track making it a 5 speed, i'll ask. JP can be very "efficient" in his down shifts, so looks can be deceiving and thats all i'm saying ;-)
No it was the Kohler International Challenge. Vintage event. If you like AC/DC you should check out Jim Pace Motorsports channel on youtube and see AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson in his prototype at the 24 hrs of Daytona
This video of yours "Jim Pace" as I was watching it, my hair on my head was flying backwards as I watched. I also believe my eyes got distorted also when you were at full borne through "Thunder Valley" at "The Hawk" @ Road America. This video was much greater than impressive. This video was very impressive and beyond. Jim, I have a question for you. Do you know who drives the 1968 #22 McLaren M6B Chassis #50-06? It is White in color with Red & Blue racing stripes. Chassis number 50-06, built in 1968, was sold new to AutoDelta, the racing division of Alfa Romeo, for their T-33 Race Project. After Alfa was done, 50-06 was placed in an Italian barn until found by Charlie Gibson. Charlie brought it to the United States with intentions of using the McLaren on the street. While doing the street project vintage racing started to get going and Charlie directed his efforts to racing the car and did so until his untimely death in 2004. Dave Handy, co-owner of Sasco Motorsports acquired the car and raced it until bought by the current owners in 2011. Jim to see a picture of this 1968 #22 McLaren M6B go to facebook.com/groups/CanAmRacing4/ there is my Canadian American Challenge Cup Series Can-Am photos of 1966 - 1974. Jim I would appreciate your help, and would really like you to join this group, and add your video's, pictures, info, to share with others as you do here also. Thank you, and appreciate you Jim Pace....Stan Bunner
That thing looks terrifying and AMAZING to drive! So much power and so little between you and the road and everything on it. Also that footwell looks kind of strange, looks like it'd be awkward to get your feet into it? Also how is the racing in these events? I imagine when everyone is driving very expensive and VERY rare cars people won't be taking any crazy risks :)
What makes such fast shifting possible? I've driven manual for 30 years, sport cars and HP cars but never anything I could shift that fast. What do they put in race cars so you can do that? Double clutch?
Nice video! I had the pleasure of working with Jim at Skip Barber in 89/90. Great driver, great guy.
For me one of the most awe inspiring forms of motorsport. Those big blocks monsters can move me emotionally.
No computer,No turbo, No paddle shifter, Pulls like a Bull , And sounds like Heaven. Thank You
Sounded like a dog box
Followed Can Am racing back in the 70's. These machines screamed through the course. The sound those velocity stacks pumped out screamed speed. Thanks for the memories!!
I LOVE the sounds it makes when he up/downshifted.
What a video!
Thank you.

hell of a job driving, around the carousel was crazy how well you held that line, great lap, thanks for making a sweet ass video.
Seems like it ended way too soon! I couldn't watched that onboard stuff for hours. I LOVED this era of racing. I remember watching them at Mid-Ohio where I grew up.
Very cool, the way he floated the rear end around at 2:50.
JasmineLindros Perfect balance of handling.
Fantastic footage. JP runs an outstanding lap. LOVE the sound of that engine at full tilt.
That sound is terrific..so mechanical and a big part of what makes viewing the videos so much fun.
Thanks! Glad people enjoy it. Watch it twice a day :)
4 unlikes? For what? Your car will never be this awesome? This is a real race car, that is that, love it, so proud of its heritage
Back when traction control was your foot. Turbos should be outlawed for their lack of sound. This is how race cars are supposed to sound
You can see the raw power the M6A has, gently ease the power and BAM!!!!!! you’re flying away
Mechanical fuel injection back then was either the engine at idle, or at full acceleration, with little in-between. It could be a reason why mechanical fuel injection was not suitable for street vehicle use.
ferocious acceleration - balls of steel!
Excellent! Such a great era in motorsports
Glad you like it. Thanks for watching. The rest are on his channel on UA-cam.com, Jim Pace Motorsports
Awesome video!! Great driving, great car, and a great track!!
Its like strapping your self to a rocket! Fantastic video
I loved watching Bruce McLaren and Denny Hulme race those orange McLaren Can-Am cars back in the day.
Those two made the races look so easy; while the rest of the competitors struggled.
Got got Brian's autograph last year. :) This is COOL! Thanks for posting it! :D

I remember seeing that car at the challenge! It just Flew! Great Vid
Glad you like it. There are new onboards at Jim Pace Motorsports channel on youtube
awesome.....car and driving.....great video
Monster car, monster driving. I love the gear noise too.
Nice to see a guy that can actually drive a car well.
Turn 5. Good eye. There is a run-off zone there with paddock access for damaged cars, or those who braked a bit too late :)
Great video. Thanks for posting.
i am in awe-like a wrestling
match
RIP Jim.
Wonderful to see these beautiful old cars used for their original use...racing.
be easy on them.
try not to prang them
but Exercise them on occasion
Thank you for sharing
You can just tell the M6B has insane amounts of grip just by looking at how little steering input is required to turn the car
My favorite track!
..................hey THANKS FOR THIS !!!!!!!!

Great action at 1:25 ;-)))
Did he drive the BF Goodrich 962 Porsche with Jim Busby? Maybe I'm imagining it.
I wish i could race my friends and show them the true skilled driver
RIP Jim Pace.
Fact! This motor started out as a 327 SBC, but has been ahhhhhemmm altered slightly :)
1966 ?? have this beast a chevy small block ??? and the trumpets from jerico !
the hilborn injection !!

Wow that thing is friggin fast would love to drive it
I could turn the monitor off and just listen to this all day.
LOL in the high speed corners it seemed like you were pointing the steering wheel in the opposite direction of the corner for most of the time. These machines are just too insane.
This one is a small block. Pretty fun none the less and just as competitive as the big blocks.
Rip Mississippi!
Man, It would be so cool to get a ride!
This guy is amazing!
Nice drive.
music to my ears.
The other car is actually a Lola T70 Coupe, but from the rear looks much like a 917.
When I was 18 I saw the pictures. 54 ys later I see a clip.
best commercial ever.

Would of been cool to see some telemetry during that run. Looks brutal.
I could be wrong, but I think there is a very short paddock gear used for getting to and from the track making it a 5 speed, i'll ask. JP can be very "efficient" in his down shifts, so looks can be deceiving and thats all i'm saying ;-)
I agree! Just touching 190MPH on a quali lap in this car at Road America. JP describes the car as "violent".
pedal to the metal and here you go, there is even more power than you would have been expected!
anyone notice the car going into the gravel @ 2:15?
1 full lap is up. Just goes by quickly. Try Jim Pace Motorsports channel on youtube for more videos!
I remeber the Bigblock aluminum McLarens. They sounded like locomotives on steriods!
Jim Pace, a total pro...
wow, great control
Thanks!

What was that slow red thang?
The sound and power of Chevy big block engines are most impressive!
That thing looks terrifying and AMAZING to drive! So much power and so little between you and the road and everything on it. Nice
Was that m6b a Chevrolet engine or was that the m8f?
a REAL MANs car thanks 'Bruce'
I've heard rumors of just that. Someone had a few of the cars at the Hawk this year.
What makes such fast shifting possible? I've driven manual for 30 years, sport cars and HP cars but never anything I could shift that fast. What do they put in race cars so you can do that? Double clutch?
Straight cut gears, not using the clutch to shift just lifting a bit on the throttle.
Lots of practice to not miss shifts then, I guess. Very cool, thank you.
@@theswimmer220 ...dog box, there's some vid of them on UA-cam
Only 4 gears ?
I believe modern age superbikes do the similar lap times, same wit NASCAR. Insane acceleration!
It's a small block chevy. I don't know the exact CI.
I love that 4 people don"t like this. They must be confused by the right turns.
Bad=Good? Was a Pole qualifying effort and the fastest time all weekend.
He has more on his channel Jim Pace Motorsports. Can-Am cars are controlled chaos :)
Not a single button on the steering wheel I think
Lola T70 Coupe. Very quick car. Big block too in comparison to the M6B's small block
Man can drive!
Christ, that's quick.
What's the "whistling sound on decel?
Brakes
Poignant observations. Wheels should be for steering.
Great !! thanks
Jim "Certainly has got the" Pace
@telescopereplicator Glad you like it. I set JP up with his own channel. If you liked this, look at Jim Pace Motorsports channel.
A real race car with 3 petals a gear shift and the steering wheel was used for steering not gear changes
WOW! WOW!
only 4 gears ?...
Negative. Normally aspirated. Lucas fuel injection, no blower, no turbo.
No reset button on this game.
Just Wow.
power seems not to be a problem ;)
