- Raw and never succumbing to sentimentality or anthropomorphism. There is no music track to manipulate your feelings, instead only natural sounds recorded on location giving you a real sense of where you are. When the human characters speak, what they say is not translated or subtitled, allowing the viewers to observe how the dogs relate to human beings through understanding our gesture and tone rather than words. From the sheep dogs of Sardinia, to the strays fighting for survival on the streets of Bucharest, a filmmaker immerses himself in the daily lives of dogs.

My cabin is a 5 day walk from the nearest road, was 3 days 50+ years ago when I built it. Found the clearing and lake when I was hunting. When I went hunting when I was in my teens and Till my late 30s I could be gone for weeks so normal for me. Saved a wolf and her pups, she was in a trap, after feeding them for a few days she started to trust me and I was able to free her. She and her pups followed me the the site I was building my cabin at so I continued to clean her wounds daily. She healed up and stayed, sleeping beside me with her pups. Now there are 14 of them, I don't know how they know when I'm coming but they meet me 2 to 3 days before I arrive at the cabin. For the rest of the walk in I know I'm safe at night because I have 5 or 6 wolves sleeping around me. Dogs and Wolves remember kindness, I love them and they Love me.The current alpha female is the Great Great grand daughter of the wolf I saved many years ago. There may be another great in there my memory is not as good as it was

Dogs are fantastic animals. When I was young we moved from one country in Africa to another. Our German shepherd got lost when he jumped out of the car chasing something at our petrol stop. It was devastating for us when we had to leave after looking and waiting for hours. The roads were dangerous, at night so we left. About 2 years later the family that occupied our old house 10 hrs away in a neighboring country called us that a dog had been wandering around the house barking and whining but won't come in. They thought it might belong to us. My father drove back there and found it was our lost dog, Tiger. It is still a mystery to this day how he got lost and walked back to the old house 10 hours away, in another country.

What an incredible story.
As a child when I lived in northern Canada on a reserve in the 1990s there were wild dogs/stray dogs. They were friendly and I would feed them and pet them. One time my family was canoeing and my favorite dog found us in the middle of nowhere and swam out to our canoe. They were always showing up and saying hi in unexpected places. Just amazing to have around. Dogs are the best.
10 hours away is not far for a dog , why it took him so long is strange .

I grew up with dogs and when I was married, our first apartment didn't allow dogs. I had to hand over my dog to my parents (who loved and spoiled him rotten), and I just found it intolerable to live without him. I credit my dog for pushing us to purchase our first home. The first thing we did(before replacing the carpet), was get my dog and fence in our backyard. Then, all was right in my world. It also made my parents realize that they needed a dog , and wasted no time adopting a little mixed schnauzer/poodle. My dog at that time was a pure bread schnauzer. Since then, we've had a variety of breeds and each one was beloved. If you've never had a dog in your life, you can't know what you're missing. They enrich your life in so many ways, it's difficult to articulate. My only complaint is that they just don't live long enough 😢.

You are so right on them not living long enough. Thankfully God makes sure they pack so much love in to those short years we do get to spend with them though.
When God wanted my dog back I was mortified. I was so sad. ❤what helped me was getting another but also by telling God thank you. Thank you for allowing me to have HIS dog for the short amount of time I had him. Dogs are truly a gift. They are blessings. I believe they are to teach of about Agape love. If my heart could be a fraction of a dogs I'd be a better human. They are loyal to no ends. They love with no bounds. I know in time him ad I will meet again. He passed at 14 from the C word 😢 but I made sure he lived the best I could give him. He was definitely a divine intervention. Without him I wouldn't be here. I'm sure I would have taken my own life long ago. But knowing I had to take care of him as he was mine and my responsibility to keep him safe I put off my un aliving . By the time he went home I no longer wanted to leave Earth. And rescued another one.

Dogs have an incredible understanding of social etiquette and procedures. The farmer opens the barn door to make a den for the birthing mother, the father charges in first to check for threats, the mother close behind. The "helper" dog voluntarily stops at the open door, waiting for an invitation to come in. Just incredible.
It's amazing how little we have learned from their good example!
The Shepherd is a real man, excellent example of how humans can live in harmony with animals and nature. He spends his life working to maintain his home, his farm and provide for the community sustainably. Although seemingly primitive, it's actually as close as you can get to how people have lived since the beginning of our Creation.
I totally agree with you, and always have loved the idea that every family can be self-sustaining. Or maybe I should say that every family can be near self-sustaining by bartering something (whatever they do well, or have an excess of) for food. For example, the farmer in the first half of the video, can offer a sheep or its wool in exchange for fresh vegetables from another farmer who has no sheep or other meat animals, but cultivates the earth and has more corn, onions, and tomatoes than his own family can consume.
But human nature impels us to desire more than just basic needs and the situation becomes complicated. But as you have said, the farmer in the video is a man who lives respectably, responsibly, and in accordance with man, nature, and God.

I am not one who has patience for animal documentaries -- so often sugar coated and infantile. This production is different. I was transfixed from beginning to end. It was also fascinating to see the differences in treatment in the various locales. Looking forward to more from this producer/director!

Bucarest Romania is just one example of many places in the world where the city is in transformation and there is no longer enough room for pet dogs and the dogs are often abandoned in the streets to return to a more wild state. Many cities went through the same process, like London, New York and Paris or Bombay and Hong Kong...

I thank God almost everyday for putting dogs on this Earth!! When I look at my 4 dogs, and see the love and compassion, and emotions in their eyes..and when I see dogs love their owners unconditionally, I cannot help but SEE GOD. 💕

Stray dogs are smart, they will never attack someone who can obviously fight back- like that film crew. Instead, they will only attack someone who is weak and alone, like child/old person/person with health issues. Some family members can't cope with that, and decide to commit revenge.
Personally, only people who buy breed dog instead of adopting a mutt are the disgusting

I adopted Ela, a Romanian dog, 9 months ago. She is wonderful and very smart! She is part of our family. More people should adopt street dogs.
I also adopted a romanian dog, her name is Billie and she s 1y old now. I dont believe adopting strays from countries like bulgaria, romania etc will solve things over there. Its the mentallity of the people there that needs to change. Spay and neuter is the only solution.

My dear pet dog(who I referred to as my brother) Erik Matović died two days ago, on Sunday the 25th of June 2023 and I feel as if a part of me died too.
I remember it was the 19th of December 2012 when my dad and I went to pick him up as my birthday present. He was a small, two and half months old puppy and vomited a little on our way back which was the first time I felt concerned for my little brother's health.
I'm sorry for not having enough strength to endure a possibly sad documentary about dogs.

I'm afraid to watch this because I have a very hard time dealing with sadness concerning dogs. You won't be the only one avoiding this video. That's no reflection on the video, BTW.
Prayers that your heart heals quickly and that you will be able to give another dog a loving home very soon. Remember, rescuing a dog won't change the world, but it will change the world for that one dog.
I'm so sorry. My heart goes out to you. I've had a lot of loss over the past couple of years and it's never easy. One of my friends lost his doggie son two days ago, as well. With just losing Erik, I'd say that you definitely made the right choice not to watch right now, as many parts of it are heartbreaking. The documentary still has its merits, so if someday you feel strong enough to watch, you may get something out of it. It has its flaws, but hey, people rarely agree with each other 100% and that's okay. For now, try to think about all of the wonderful times you have had with your 4-legged brother. I feed my dogs a raw diet. After switching from a top rated, high priced kibble to a 100% raw diet, I'll never feed them anything but raw again. It's the diet that they were actually made to eat & you'll never find a healthier dog eating anything else. Guaranteed!
On a separate note, I must say, that those were some of the most gorgeous looking stray dogs that I've ever seen!

We feed our two raw but recently ran short of meat and gave them a tin of cheap supermarket dog food found in the pantry , they went mad for it , just like teenagers with junk food , heaven knows what was in it , (purhaps best saved for their birthdays )
I met a dog who followed me for a kilometer in Mexico always non chalant 30 paces behind...then we made friends ...and with my children too. We called her Sandy, she was friendly but independent too. We loved Sandy.
I'll never forget in TCI watching a senior wild dog organize a group before crossing a busy road and stopping traffic in all safety. It made me appreciate dogs that much more. In Grand Cayman, walking back to our villa from the restaurant, a pack of wild dogs walked with us at dusk. No aggression. In Exuma, we got lost down a road, and a semi-wild dog set upon our car aggressively but as soon as I showed disappointment, it altered its demeanour to something calmer. They're extremely smart, and can sense a dog lover/owner. My dream used to be to have a drop-in shelter to feed them, at the very least. They have my respect. 💜

Interesting…disappointment. I walked in on a pack of dogs in a bamboo patch. I backed out after absolutely knowing which dog was mostly the leader and wasn’t fearful of eye contact at first but then realized I need to express some submission and I felt apologetic for interrupting. No problem ensued. I think most animals are strongly telepathic. I see it all the time. Its not just body language.

It saddens me to see millions of dogs,abondaned, put into shelters,and murdered. Not just strays of foreign countries,but supposedly dogs of civilized United States of America.
Many years ago, my husband worked at a place called S.e.a.c.a (South East are animal control) in a suburb of Los Angeles, where he provided care for stray,lost, abandoned injured, small animals, dogs, cats, birds, ( fighting roosters, ) unfortunately,the down side to the job was as you put it was murder the animals that were there to long...( He often felt as you do) too balance out the odds,he would often juggle paper work,or send people in to show interest in the animals, change name tags..to extend the lives of these animals, he never took any pleasure in the job of putting them down...I watched a happy man, turn into a angry ,depressed man...he could of quit, but felt he needed to be there to slow down or at times stop the killing ..he soon realized that if this part of the job was not done...the city ,county would be over run with thousands of strays, with parvo, rabies, and what have you...I remember we would go out at night to dinner and we would see hundreds of dogs, cats, just running amok, sickly ,starving, hit by vehicles...people are to blame for the lack of care, the abandonment, and abuse of these animals...most humans are not kind to animals...after about 2 years he had to walk away...it was too depressing for him.
It was a necessary evil that job...feral dogs and yes even feral cats ,were responsible for many attacks on people,and often on children..many a time, there were homeless people attacked and often found partially eaten, it was a bad fact,that the cities demanded secrecy ...we need severe laws for abandonedment and abuse of animals, heavy fines and prison, same as if these crimes were against humans...animals are living creatures, they should not be property with the same rights as a hand tool ..the truth of the matter is if they made laws to protect animals, then hundreds of thousands in this country would be out of a job....as there would be much fewer animals to protect and save. The truth is for every 100.00 $ collected to save animal 70% goes to administration costs, such as payrolls and paper work..the head administration, get yearly payrolls of about 3-4 hundred thousand..this also occured at the salvation army, and other human charities.
Suffering and cruelty, is very profitable in society.this is why homelessness is not fixed.when it can be in 1 year if this country used 3 months of the Ukraine war budget...sorry to ramble, just angry at the system, the greed that hurts animals, and the needy...

So 3 months of the Ukraine budget is only about 3% paid from every billionaire in our country. Think about that.

Street dogs have such a sad life, thanks to the human animal. There is nothing more disgusting than the way man treats animals, including his own, when they stop pleasing him or serving his needs. Thank God for the civilized, compassionate people, whose mission it is to rescue these domesticated, mistreated animals. Also, much gratitude to the caring people from around the world, who donate to these rescue groups and individual rescuers. I've watched a few of the videos from rescuers, so of seen the outrageous abuse of innocent animals from sadistic people, of all ages and from many countries.
i am working for an animal welfare programme in Romania, with all thouse hundreds of thousands of stray dogs. Even thoug I work with a dog sanctuary there, it breaks my heart again to see the romanian dogs here in the documentary again. If you are looking for a dog, please give adoption a chance

Thanks so much for this! It helps me understand my dog better and how he survived on his own for his first two years in a pack on a military base in St. Petersburg, Russia. He was very wild when we first brought him home. 6 years later, and he is pretty domesticated now and such a awesome dog.

All the people featured in the documentary are kind to their animals, and the farmer as well even though some people find him rough he is actually very fond of his animals.
I’m an American visiting India at the moment and I have to say it’s friggin sad to see so many dogs on the street. The traffic here is nothing like you would see anywhere else and dogs are smart enough to stay on the side of the road.

Here in Germany we don't have any sreet dogs, no killing shelters and we adopt large amounts of rescue dogs from other countries.

What I wouldn't give to see this the world over, for dogs and for cats. 💜
Same goes for Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark. If there is a stray-dog it will get caught and taken care of. And it is un-lawful to treat pets(and any animals for farming for instance) with neglicence, if caught doing that you can be banned from having pets and even fined/jailed. Every dog(and soon cats in Sweden atleast) must now be tagged also, so no-one can get away with black-market dealings, well not that easy atleast.
pure bred dog breeds are full of maladies though... dogs belong in a working environment rather than sitting on someone's couch

great programme. I live in a small village like community in India and our dogs live a life that is midway between farm dogs and stray dogs. Our community itself is a fenced community that is midway between modern city and pure village
if there is a war over there it will be called the battle of midway
Dogs occupy a different space in India (usually adjacent to a row of food stalls, where they remain well-fed & not hated, or in a courtyard playing with some kids). In all the time I spent in India, though, I only came across ONE true "house dog," a little white poodle mix named Billi (which, ironically, means "cat" in Hindi) who lived in a hotel in Merta & sat on the owner's wife's lap every waking hour. ❤️ 🇮🇳✌🏼
My heart breaks for all those neglected. Abandoned dogs out there and shame on the people for not being responsible and compassionate like the amazing animals they abuse and. Abandon
From my personal experience I can say that wild dogs are the most adequate. Not in the sense that they are friendly, but in the sense that they behave in the most predictable way for someone who is aware of the behavior of dogs in general. Domestic dogs are often unsocialized, unpredictable to some extent.

Maybe there's an element of dogs being brought up in a community that counts with socially apt role models. Life in the wild is hard, yet only when scarcity hits populations become dysfunctional. I'd say they are necessarily friendly, just not in the way someone who babies their dog would expect; a friendly remark is sometimes more beneficial than outright violence when regulating the group, just the right amount of reciprocity and aggressiveness.
Sadly, that is often the case! It's shocking how many people don't understand their domestic pets.

The comment section here really misses the mark. I work with dogs for a living, and have dedicated my life to them. I am very "middle of the road," after years of leaning and understanding our canine friends. This means, that I understand the complex relationship humans have with dogs over an evolutionary period. One of the reasons the producers of this film chose such a rural farm is to show us how dogs lived with us for hundreds of thousands of years. You might not like it, but what if I told you that I thought it was abuse to lock a young dog in a cage for hours at a time, or to abandon an elderly dog because it bit your newborn and you live in an apartment. We need to view dogs as animals before anything. This farmer treats these dogs as he was raised treating them, and people ALL OVER THE WORLD view them this way. In fact, in many countries human beings don't spay and neuter dogs because they see it as cruelty. We need to look at the dogs through the eyes of other cultures, and also broaden our viewpoint to understand that they think what we do in the western world is bizarre. In America, we treat dogs as children or a baby when they ARE NOT and it causes so many problems. I also wanted to comment that the producer mentioning that purebred dogs don't exist - This farmer is aiming for purebred dogs with his italian hunting dogs and akbash/meremma type dogs. These dogs would never fit a Western registry... Purebred dogs are a product of kennel clubs and they are based on profit. Not on what the dog can do. In reality - many breeds around the world exist just like these dogs do. In rural areas where people enjoy a certain look and set of traits but occasionally another dog breeds into the line. Its called outcrossing. Its normal. Anyway... this has motivated me to write a book. PLEASE educate yourselves on history, anthropology, other cultures around the world and dog genetics and behavior before you go calling this man a dog abuser.
Should also mention that I wrote this regarding the first part of the documentary. The later two halves discuss many issues that I could go into but we all agree as animals lovers that spay and neuter is the answer to a lot of this suffering.

People didnt live in farms hundreds of thousands years ago… domestication, agriculture only started about 12 thousands yrs ago and it was a gradual process.
In general people respected nature largely until 3-2000yrs ago when major patriarchy and exploitation began all over the world in most places.
Yes dogs (or other animals or human kids) were not treated as cuddly babies perhaps but there was no major difference in hierarchy, humans DID NOT consider themselves superior to their domesticated livestock, to their servant or guardian dogs as MOST rural men think of these animals in our “civilized” culture.
Farming and rural lifestyle in the last couple thousands yrs ago do not reflect at all how humans lived together with their animals in ancient times.
You go everywhere now and talk to any grandpa, they will say they see their animals as only serving them placing themselves on top of hierarchy. They guard their herds cos they live from them, they keep the dogs cos they are useful to them, but if no longer in need they dont care for their faithful companion.
Rural men dont really think animals are as smart/worthy/equal as themselves. They exploit them - yes, in a bit more natural way then in the industrialized factories do - but it is mere exploitation.
It is not applicable of course every farmer/breeder/herder but in rural areas I have been they showed NO respect towards animals just as women are usually seen as secondary humans.
Rural lifestyle do not reflect what it was like for long time. Luckily there are more and more good farmers and nature respect among the younger ones, in poorer areas in poorer countries exploitation continues or villages of old people simply die out.
Seeing dogs through the eyes of other cultures does not mean we should not judge, criticize, condemn uncivilized, brutish, or sadistic behavior. Some human animals have evolved enough to care about cruelty, entitlement, inequality, etc. against animals, women, and children, perpetrated by patriarchal males.

In 2001 or 2002 I rescued a dog from a shelter in Paradise California. Little did I know at the time that it was he who rescued me not the other way around.
Dogs deserve to live better lives. People are so cruel.
This was a very well together documentary. I only watch certain types of documentaries. That’s actually help me understand dogs a little bit better. And the narrator was correct and the dogs were mating that we don’t tend to really understand and know what they’re doing and why and how much they do it when I saw it I was like I don’t wanna see that even though I know what they’re doing, but it’s important to see these things so we can learn and come to understand.

Bucarest Romania is just one example of many places in the world where the city is in transformation and there is no longer enough room for pet dogs and the dogs are often abandoned in the streets to return to a more wild state. Many cities went through the same process, like London, New York and Paris or Bombay and Hong Kong...
my great grandmother told me a story,that in the beginning humans and wolves were going through a great famine because the world was going through a very harsh winter that lasted for years, and fough each other for food and territory.
The conflict reach to the point that both species almost went extinct,so they made a pact to cooperate with each other in order to survive.
Humans learned the wolves hunting tactics,while the wolves benefited from humans the hability to hunt even larger prey with less fatalities. iIt was a symbiosis of a sort.
They splitted again because humans started to domesticate their young,and the wolves saw that as slavery.
That is a plot of both a movie and a book 😂

All her stories were passed down from older generations,and she took them seriously,if just to convey a lesson.

The sweet brindle at the end just melted my heart. He looks so sweet, and even let the other dog win when playing fighting. And that helicopter wag of his tail and play bow was adorable!
I think he was making advances toward the female in heat, and her answer was no or not yet. I have seen the behavior in several male dogs. My own male acts that way toward my boyfriend's female dog that he got from someone who could not care properly for her with her escape artist personality. She was headed for the dog pound at the rate she was going. She was supposed to be spayed, but wasn't. He got her spayed, but she had already come into heat.
My dog always pesters her, making advances, play fighting, poking her on the shoulder with his nose --- and of course, she always keeps telling him no. He thinks she is saying not yet, and so he waits and will wait forever. He is indoor/outdoor guard dog. He won't leave the yard to find a better girlfriend, because she comes over twice a day, and he is afraid he will miss her coming into heat if he leaves to find another.
When he isn't trying to woo her, he enjoys her acting as backup when he runs to the fence to bark at certain motorcycles and the garbage trucks, so he is able to enjoy other activities. He likes to retrieve a ball thrown for him and eating snacks. She acts like she can't stand him, and he thinks he is 'in love' with her (lol). This has been going on for several years now. He is four times her size, so no matter what, their joining was never going to happen, but he doesn't know that.

When I was poor I broke into a dog pound with boltcutters to rescue my best friend once,I let out a few others so it wasn't just my dog that went Missing, funniest memory of my life running up the street with my dog in my arms (he was a puppy)while 8 dogs were nearly tripping me over barking and excited I broke them out too 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Countries like Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary all receive generous grants from the EU yet little to nothing is done for the people and nature in these countries. Most of it is divided among the politicians.

I'm a firm believer in letting dogs be dogs, but as much as I try to convince him otherwise, my dog insists that he is entirely dependent upon me to scratch his every itch, & if I were to try to leave him outdoors for even a minute, he would freeze to death in the brutal, Southern California winters. 🙄

There’s one thing I wish I could tolerate then I can watch from beginning to end, and that is SUFFERING! Even if it’s a little or alot, I can NOT STAND TO WATCH ANYTHING SUFFER, my heart just can’t take it!!! IT MAKES ME PHYSICALLY SICK….IDKW it just hurts too much…..
I hear you. I have been this way since a young child, and at 71 am no longer ashamed of my sensitivity to suffering. Rather a broken heart than a hard heart that inures itself to the suffering of life on earth. Rather a broken heart than an enculturated machine. Emptathy is what makes us human. Put your arms around yourself, my friend. There's a lot to cry about on this earth plane. And, if nature is a big clue, all suffering is eventually turned into joy. Just do what you can in everyday life to ease your own and other's suffering. I didn't make it through this video either. Please don't think you're some kind of failure for not being a machine.
@@jeannined7532 I have been told I am an empath, and it’s probably true… I do suffer when I see others suffering in anything that they are going through. Sometimes I have to turn away because my face and body can feel it running through me like a freight train…I am used to it ,but it can be too painful 😓…if I allow myself some time I can get through it and love and hug them and try to ease them…. While it's heartbreaking to see them struggle for survival, this video is also very important. It shows lots of natural behavior. Dog to dog, and dog to man interactions.

An interesting view into the wild side of dogs.
I have been raised with dogs in the family home since I was a baby. I very sadly lost my very last dog 'Max' who was only 8 1/2 years old suddenly to leukemia 3 1/2 years.ago. I would regularly observe his behaviour, his expression and eyes, in complete wonder, watching him along with all these characteristics, trying to work out what was going through his mind from a dog's perspective (and not my own has a human) in that very moment. Just so I could further enhance the great companionship friendship and trust that he had 'allowed me the privilege' to share with him.
Although many, many 1000,s of centuries have passed since the domestic dog came into the humans life and into the modern world, it is unfortunate that different cultures still look and treat dogs in a undignified and cruel way has if they (man) are mentally living in the present day and are incapable, either through cultural, religious, beliefs, disrespect or plain cruelty adapt their own behaviour and respect towards these highly intelligent and non-judgemental animals. Rather than being what I see has man's ignorance, excuses based on 'religion and cultural beliefs to do otherwise.
Dogs are not something we can continue to mistreat (based on all of the 'outdated' above beliefs of man) or kick into the curb, skin, boil alive or continue to treat has nothing but work animals without giving them in return kindness and human companionship has they have always given us since their domesticization 30,000 years ago. These 'outdated' and cruel beliefs of the treatment of dogs mainly based on cultural, religious and outright cruelty need to change. There is 'no' excuse for those who are still 'stuck' in the past.

Just a question, whilst filming these poor homeless dogs, did you feed them in that time ? Because I think if it were me, I would of brought along some food for all. It breaks my heart and yet through their hardship and strife, they still wag their tails.

My research has found that our Family name means"the keepers of dogs".The first of us was required to assume this name in order to take property and titles in Scotland in the 13th century. I Believe we were meant to be at the forefront of dog "technology" as far as training all manner of dogs from domestic,hunters, farm ,and battle dogs for the Lord, perhaps even the King. There is a dog rather than a stag or horse on our Family Crest.i have loved dogs for as long as I have lived.I almost became a veterinary like my Beloved uncle.

I have adopted a lovely Dog from International animals rescue. Since he was quietly sitting in a cage, i choose this cute two months old brown puppy. He is half British and half local. Since my youngest son Michael loved him at first sight, he was named Raphael. We call him Raphy. God we love him so much. He is a spoiled brat.

Excellent film documentary. It is heartbreaking to see the poor-to-non-existent care of these dogs. Most seem to be quite handsome, and intelligent shepherd dogs. A program of spaying and neutering would be inexpensive, and result in less suffering. I suspect many of these dogs would readily become adoptable; perhaps most Romanians don’t have the means to care for pet dogs. It is expensive. A large dog eats a lot, requires occasional veterinary care, cleaning up after, and daily exercise. Many Americans have far greater resources, even those of us who are retired and live on a limited income. The fate of these dogs is hard to watch-especially those in the city. It also incidentally exposes the limited resources of most of the Romanians in the area where you were filming, compared to that of middle class Americans. I’ve lived in an apartment, and I had a 75 pound German Shepherd. But I was young, worked from home, and had the time to walk my dog three times a day, and time to take her to the dog park. Even then, living from month-to-month as a free-lance writer, I was far better-off, it appears, than most of the Romanians you filmed. The life of the shepherd appeared far more rewarding, than I can imagine was the case for most of the apartment-dwellers in Romania. The film leads me to think of the whole of Romania-not only the dogs-so different from The States. Austin, TX, has a no-kill policy at the city shelter, but the City’s resources are currently pushed past their maximum capacity-an apparent side-effect from the pandemic. The majority of the shelter dogs here are American pit bull terrier, or pit Bull mixes.

The sheep farmer was a natural man, who appreciated the help of his dogs. The poor strays in Bucharest are treated better than in other countries, but I pitied them nonetheless. I don’t see how this film shows any resemblance of respect for animals
I was saying we need to start to have compassion, kindness, and respect to dogs and other animals, their lives matter too, I guess the rich and powerful brainwashed us through television and society to be indifference towards animals. I myself rescued at least 15 dogs and cats from being abandoned from their previous owners and on the street.
The person who filmed this documentary at least exposed how street dogs live and how people treat them.
To me the farmer could have been more generous in feeding his dogs, got some of them fixed and provided adequate shelter, and the neighbors in Romania could have organized and pushed the local government to extend protection to stray dogs and yard dogs, but it looks like most people have low emotional intelligence or are primitive in their ways.
Why keep mating his dog get it fixed so many homeless now makes no sense a farmer allowing more unwanted puppies ,he took one from the bush where's the rest of them puppies ask

I never colar or leash my dogs. The gate is open and they could leave anytime and sometimes they go for a little wander and go a few blocks away or walk with a trusted human friend that they have made to the shops and back but always return to my side. They prefer to walk with me on a fox perimeter check. They take chicken guarding very seriously. I think all dogs need a job like this.

I was good with this documentary for about 99% of it. It was interesting to see the lives of stray/abandoned dogs and those of LSG dogs which predominantly live outside though I would argue that some points seemed like conjecture. I understand Dr. Ian and Kelly Dunbar were used as advisors for this, but given how much commentary there was, it would have been vastly more invaluable to at least quote them or tell us their opinion about what was happening given that they are the experts. At the end, I couldn't deal with it as the narrator turned the film about dogs towards the audience as a demonizing mirror. Yes, people treat their pets as children at times. It does not mean people literally see them as their children as there is never a moment people aren't cognizant of the fact it *is* an animal. Not only this, but this whole movie seems to imply humans are somehow terrible for how we treat a domesticated animal that, for literally tens of thousands of years, we have selectively bred and trained to be our companion animals and workers. Dogs and wolves share over 98% of genetics, but that 2% has allowed dogs to be attune to human non-verbal cues, allowed humans to innately understand the noises of dogs (playful, distressed, angry), allowed them to accept us as their owners and caretakers, and let biologists use dogs as their own small micro-pool of information about diabetes, cancers, and other health related topics because dogs have co-evolutionarily grown with us so closely that they have the same issues we do. The narrator thought it was weird humans don't let dogs mate normally or have entirely self-regulated hierarchies amongst themselves-- well no kidding! Irresponsible breeding is bad. That's why there are so many of those street dogs and even "purebred" dogs with numerous health issues. We don't let "nature take its course" because we don't want unnecessary suffering, either from dogs that go unloved or those that will be too unhealthy to live meaningful lives. There are working dogs that are equally great house pets like police dogs, sheep dogs, LSG dogs, ratting dogs, medical alert dogs, guide dogs, etc. That's the beauty of dogs, they are happy to work for us, but also love humans. What a weird note to end on: "Look at these neglected, sad dogs that no one loves-- but they're *free and can mate when they can because no one bothered to spay them!* Aren't we monsters for them not having these instincts that we systematically bred out of them and allowed them to exist in the first place?"

We share more than 97% of genes with mice too... . Yeah, I was hoping for something along the lines of those documentaries that follow stray and feral cats to teach about their instics and behaviour; and was bothered inmediatlely by the emotionally charged, incriminatory and contradictory tone of narration. One cannot deffend the "let dogs be wolves" approach, and still want them to be perceived and treated as pets. Wolves history with humans and cattle is not so friendly and charming as that of the noble sheepdog. And we all should know the problems that arise when animals find abundant resources plus lack of predators allowing them to multiply: they become plagues and vectors of disease; and they damage the ecosystem through overpopulation, even exterminating other species.
I believe sometimes animals right defenders take antropomorfization of pets, cattle and rescued animals too far; and this seems like a proyective example of that to me too. I mean, there's more to life than procreating; and oddly enough us human are a perfect example of that. Many working dogs LOVE their jobs, and NEED them in order to live happy, fullfilled lives. Many dog breeds are totally unequiped to be able to find food and fend for themselves. What are we supossed to do, let them breed without control; but step in order to stop natural selection so they dont starve, or die because of a heavy matted fur? I do support responsible breeding; but to me that means trying to give animals not also the best environments; but the best outcome in health and environmental adaptation. Seems paradoxical to me that some people want to prevent shepperds from mixing dogs of different breeds in order to get well balanced working companions; yet we allow and encourage vanity purebreeding.

You lost me at "we don't want unnecessary suffering". We have pugs and other flat-faced dogs, "28th most popular dog breed out of the 204 AKC-recognized breeds." in America. Humans too have a bizarre perception of what constitutes "suffering", in this case, we think it's ok to create a species that can't swim, breathe or give birth by itself, because we crave the sensation of being God almighty in front of defenseless, genetically retarded creations. Over 50% of dogs are also kept on leashes all their lives, including dogs who have been bred to run kilometers daily, because we think it's fine, even when they cry their lungs out wanting to go out but we don't have the means or energy to offer it to them. I suppose everything becomes necessary if it satisfies something we lack, such as ego, isn't it? Many police dogs aren't exercised enough either and absolutely crave attention and playtime, due to a lack of it. The dogs themselves don't realise it or know any better though. They only know what they know. You'll be able to see their instincts when you leave it free. Does it run or stay with you indoors all day and night?
@@Ab3ndcgi Kind of off topic, but I couldn't help but think In reading your reply, that you could have easily substituted Human Beings in the place of Dogs. At least dogs don't rape and murder each other and live in harmony with their environment. Humans that are mentally sound know the difference, yet we keep doing this destructiveness time and time again!

Very glad that you enjoyed the film! I have been making documentaries for many years, for PBS, BBC and other major public TV broadcasters. In this business, we often overly direct documentaries, telling people what to do or asking them to repeat something they have just done.
