  • We’re busy editing the full video of our recent Jan 3, 2023, EV road trip from LA to the SF Bay Area, but here’s an appetizer to hold you over, and to launch my new feature “How’s my charge?” We stopped at Electrify America at Countryside Market in Bakersfield, CA. 3 of the 4 dispensers were offline. Hilarious incompetence ensued when I called EA to report them down.

Oddly, up here in Ontario, Canada, Electrify Canada has recently proven to the be one of the more reliable networks...albeit the most expensive....at least most of the chargers work, the times I've tried them. The largest provider here is Ivy, which provides charges up and down the 401 corridor here, has gotten so bad that they now offer free charging network wide because they can't keep the chargers working. You are rolling the dice when rolling up to a charger....and the network was install in March 2021. Still love my MachE though.

I really enjoyed this content! What's the point of the Charger ID number if they can't find the station? To be fair, I initially couldn't find this station on the map either and made the same mistake by looking in Bakersfield when these chargers are a legit 20 miles away from the city. The charge session and station review is really good and appreciated!

Hey look on the bright side...you got one that worked and it was open! BTW, you're a tough grader on some of those categories....start grading on a curve :)

The entire charging network should really be more reliable than this. The fact you had to report them over a 15 minute phone call is shockingly inefficient and could easily be automated. They could add a function to their app and website to report failed chargers with charger number, location and fail state so they can restart and hard reset them sooner. People would be far more likely to report broken chargers if it took 2 minutes on an app or website. They need better remote monitoring of these charging stations to check uptime, status, and more, and do extra work to prevent false positives and false negatives. If the majority of chargers cannot achieve at least 99.9% of uptime, there is not much hope for EV's in the future.
