@@ghettoleprechaun5234 Not some people, but just about everywhere in early civilizations, & in a good many relatively advanced places until about the time of the industrial revolution. Salt had once been a heavily regulated, highly prized commodity that only the wealthy could afford. Even with the prices driven down in the last 500 years or so, becoming more affordable for the masses, it was far from the stuff that we take for granted these days & throw around like they cost nothing.
Spice is great until you find yourself in the lower levels of coruscant giving the sloppy to a pike for just a point.

I wonder if George Lucas, when he wrote this part of the Star Wars Universe story, did he draw inspiration from the Dune mythos, in his portrayal of Spice?
Probably! Hell a ton of other sci-fi works were influenced by the Dune Universe

He ripped off a couple things from dune but then a ton of sci-fi rips off stuff from dune.
Probably, as we can see in many things that were clearly inspired by sci-fi classics like the Barsoon series, I'll not be surprised if Dune was an inspiration too.

When you're born into a miserable place with a miserable life ahead of you that you could little to nothing to change, being essentially reduced to a disposable cog the moment your chances of getting offworld is gone, dying in a few short years feeling high every day would definitely be much more preferable to slaving away to fatten someone else's pockets for decades.

While I do like Legends they did the Twi'lek's dirty, making a race practically defined by their connections to the drug (Ryll) and slave trade.
I mean it would make some sense. Some planets in the universe are likely to be poor with Key metals and or biology needed to help advance. In an end the only resource one can export in an interstellar civilization is unfortunately... yourself.
They did the same with the alien race in the Obi scene to.

Being a recovering addict myself. I would really love to see an arc of the guy who got clean from death sticks. Then went on to pass pamphlets out about addiction. I know that just that alone will need more elements to it. But it can start by the rethinking, then the major pain in the ass perils of getting out of the drug trade ALIVE. You get the picture. Plus believe it or not, that story alone on the screen could help push real worlders to try & mick it as well.

considering cybernetics and performance-enhancing drugs are such a part of Star Wars, i don't see conventional athletics being very interesting or easy to keep clean; also, different species have different physical capabilities; Anakin was one of the few, if not only, humans in pod racing, as most didn't have the reflexes needed for it
I think you should really talk about why in Star Wars they love to use this whole “one planet, one climate” theme when it comes to creating new plants. It’s like you either have planets that are fully jungle, planet wide city, cold and looking like Antarctica example hoth and that planet that the moon pantora orbits or whatever, dessert like Tatooine or jakku, jungle planets like kashyyyk or Felucia. Like do they do this on purpose to help make things a bit easier when it comes to writing and creating an entire universe, is it just plain old lazy creativity or is it just how the Star Wars universe works or whatever. I think there are only a few planets in the Star Wars universe that have multiple climates like our plant earth for example like Alderaan, speaking of which..what’s the difference between Alderaan and Onderon btw? Lol but yea, what’s with the “one planet climate” theme in Star Wars? It’s just something that’s always been bugging me since I’ve first watch the originals back in the late 90s when I just still just a pre teen kid. Lmao 🤣

Say, does the edict "Hard times create strong/good people, strong/good people create good times, good times create weak/bad people, and weak/bad people create hard times" fit well with Star Wars as a whole? Just saying.
I mean, that "edict" isn't even true in the first place. Some people rise to the occasion, yes, but if things stay bad for long enough, it just starts to degrade. Hard times create desperate people more often than "strong/good" people. People who will do anything to survive and keep their families alive, and fall prey to demagogues who exploit their desperation for their own foul ends. Hint: this is how we get fascism.

Nah man, when you get into the size of Star Wars you get massive waves hardship and good times, strength would come from improvement, not getting worn down to the nub every time you wake up, cause there's about seven thousand people fighting for your job, have fun feeding your kids if you can't hack the 18 hours. See, that's the one good thing that the Yuuzhan Vong did. Their invasion basically destroyed the Hutt empire and cut the supply lines of spice, forcing those on spice to confront their addictions. The spice trade didn't recover at least for the better part of a century.
