Felipe Mazon The William Leavitt books were some of the 1st that I used back in the mid to late '70's. I still take them out now and again, especially vol.3. It's because people today has very low attention span for melody, rhythm and harmony. They just look for something obvious like fast and loud stuff. I can listen to a good jazz player play for days, that's what I do here on youtube, I'm pretty sure there are still folks who enjoy quality music.

I was there too, and the pevey amps on P-100 stage confirm it. Still very impressive. The comment among students then, was that they didn't rehearse at all for this presentation, having maybe 15 min backstage to choose what to play. All the more impressive if one belives it. Oh golly, bless they're hearts!
This is awesome. They both bring so much music to the table. I really think Pat played so well, his development of his passages really standout to me. And Joe's use of triplets is so impressive. These guys are really good.
I was there 1983/1984. The performance halls still had the Peaveys. Pat didn't come by that year, but he sat in one night at a veggie restaurant in Venice where Charlie Haden was playing. I actually shook his hand after the gig, introduced myself, said I was a student at GIT, and people were still talking about him coming by a few years earlier. I'm just a nobody student, but Pat was very cool, very gracious. He couldn't work a visit into his schedule that year. He was in town to do a demo for the new Synclavier at USC. My one brush with greatness, lol! I thought GIT kinda phased out those Peaveys in the later 80s, but could be wrong. Anyways...just gorgeous playing by two true masters!! Thanks for posting this precious recording!!!
Some of the other comments in regards to a disdain of jazz,shows how these two are in contrast to the commentators, they are articulate, and expressive.I dont see there Real Books in front of them as they play.They both are playing from their hearts.

+mohitoness That is a great example of the difference between the 2 players... Metheny gets inside the tune & makes it his own - he is a strong musical current. Diorio surfs on top, albeit brilliantly at times. Comparing players is pretty much " apples vs oranges" however!
Im not sure if youre a musician or not, but it is very common for professional jazz musicians to perform without rehearsing. We are armed with a Real book, a book with thousands of pieces of sheet music, and you just pick a song, take a request, or are told what to play, and you play it on the spot.

+Glenn Michael Thompson If it's a lecture you need : It's not Latin, its Brazilian...big difference. Latin is Cuba, Mexico via Spain. South American is mostly Spanish - Argentina, Venezuela etc., but influenced by Brazil, so Latin doesn't really cover the whole South American music unless you don't know much about the various countries. In which case Latin means anything that happens south of US border. US Jazzers used to call anything that "didn't swing" Latin - some 'old school straight-ahead' still do. Personally, I think Brazilian music swings hard - like early Pat Martino "Along Came Betty" for a classic US jazz example.. As far as "electric band trio"... maybe english is a second language for the quotee...

(up North) BTW I hate categorizing music. I suppose if you're learning specific beats it can help.... but if I go to buy a cd in a local store, whether it's jazz, Cuban, Brazilian etc. there will NOT be separate categories... It'll all be under Jazz , or World music. C'est la vie.
Not Geography, but the SOUNDS of all the different ethnic influences - west & east european classical & folk with Spain, Italy, Portugal folk...& the African influence pervaded all of it. Now when you go to a generic Latin or World Music section, at least you can begin to make sense of where all the diversity came from, & new places it went, & can go to. Hopefully you can find a local store run by crazed musicians who have tons of genres! Online, try Amoeba records in Berkeley, CA, or SPIN records in Carlsbad, San Diego North coast, Ca.
What's uncommon is that I liked, a lot!!! I'm not a jazz fan, not for lack of trials, but, some how, it never feels absolutely right. With all due respect to jazz as an essential learning style and cradle for most contemporary western music, allow me a joke. Do you know any jazz fan that can willingly watch an entire jazz performance without a massive alcohol consumption? I'm afraid that as a humble pot head, my jazz appreciation capabilities are limited to Joe Pass, Eletric Band and few others

The worst part of bebop for me is that bassists seem to enjoy it way more than they should be allowed. It's a kind of self coolness assessment or something. Now seriously, do you know the name of the song that starts at 39 minutes on this very cool Electric Band Trio video? Nice video btw.
The worst part of most fusion and "smooth" jazz is that it is boring... however some cats who are known for their smooth sound, like George Benson, are only in it for the money...Benson is an excellent strategy ahead and bop player when he puts his mind to it...
