Edward Teach aka Black Beard is played by the late Ray Stevenson, he has been in several shows. He was one of the main cast in the HBO series Rome. A great series and worth checking out
@@jameswg13 Pullo and Vorenus!! What was so creative about the show was the shows creator took these 2 Roman Centurions names for Julius Ceasar's Commentarii de Bello Gallico (Commentaries on the Gallic War) where all he said of them was they were extremely brave and great soldiers and had a rivalry and the shows creators made them the center of Ceasars Civil War and turning Rome from a republic to an empire. I always thought that was so cool and creative
Rest in Peace Ray Stevenson. He’s really great in this role. There have been a lot of actors who have played Blackbeard, but his performance will always stand out. This is of course helped by the writing, but he really gives Edward Teach a *presence* that’s hard to articulate, and isn’t as simple as just making him intimidating. Watching his scenes gives me a bittersweet feeling now, and that’s not likely to go away.
'Teach" is Edward Teach, aka blackbeard, one of the real historical pirates portrayed in the show, alongside Jack Rackham, Charles Vane, Benjamin Hornigold, Anne Bonny, and Ned Low. weaving these real figures in with fictional ones from classic literature is one of the great reasons this is one of my favorite all time shows.
When blackbeard says his name everyone is supposed to jump with excitement, or surprise, but many don't realize who he is hahaha. It's sad that they don't know his name, but it is becoming more common with historical figures.
I didn't know Blackbeard's real name was Edward Teach until I watched this show. In everything I've ever seen or read personally, he's always just been Blackbeard.
Yeah, I would cut the ladies a little slack. Remember, they aren't from the Americas, so them not knowing who Edward Teach is perfectly understandable. Besides, can you name any famous 18th Century Eastern European bandits or Mediterranean pirates off the top of your head?
This is definitely a show that gets better and better on rewatches. I've rewatched it several times and each time realize something new. You can't praise the writing enough and Toby Stephens just out there giving a masterclass in acting every episode. I love, love, love that you guys remembered Miranda's line from last season about none of Flint's demons looking or sounding like her. But now she is the ghost who torments him the most. 😢 Teach calmly murdering his wife's brothers is unnerving. He's so different from Flint's rage or Vane's brutality. He feels like an entirely different beast.
I not only agree with every point you made, but thought this was the best season open with that Teach reveal. Great addition, as you said, for a few reasons.
“I own a tavern, a brothel, a tanner, a butcher -- interests in a dozen other concerns on the street. I am the one they come to here when they need things, want things, fear things. In another time, in another place, they would call me a queen.” Well Max, you’ll always be *my* queen. Seriously though, I love everything she says here. I love the callback to her words to Eleanor about “sand”. This makes it the third time that phrase has been used. Firstly, when she told Eleanor “This place is just sand, it cannot love you back.” Then at the end of the first season they discussed the concept again, and Max talked about the advantages that “sand” can provide. “On sand nothing is fixed…” So here we see a continuation of that idea, and I love how this has become an established pattern with both her dialogue and it being something she actively thinks about. She knows that civilization will still return, knows that the foundation here will shift again, and all she can do is try to root herself as firmly as possible, to keep herself from being swept away.
Brilliant character and journey. I know she's popular to hate for many in the fandom (its nice to have reactors who dont think she is a selfish conniving backstabber), and I'm so glad that the writers never lost interest in her character.
I think there's a bit of romanticization happening. Why do they think there are no slaves on Nassau? Mr Scott is a slave. Pirates aren't some noble group against slavery, in fact many of the crews we follow sell slaves. Brison, the guy who had the guns Flint needed in season 2, docked there with a group of slaves. No one was up in arms about it. The pirates on Nassau aren't against slavery, they just do whatever is in their own self interest. Case in point, they have no issue using slaves to now build the forte because it's convenient. Moral conviction isn't something you toss away the moment it's convenient. It's convenient to use the slaves now and it will be convenient to use them some other time.
It often happens when the cast is attractive. the vikings were objectively worse people than the Anglo Saxons and the Franks etc they raided but backstories, attractive actors, music etc can make even the most heinous people sympthetic.
Yeah it's like it's a tv show almost. Smh. Of course people have these views of tv show characters. There's nothing new about this. EVERYONE does this to some degree. Hell some people love Walter white after all the evil crap he did. People do this with tv characters all the time. It's pretentious to act as if this is something new. One of my favorite Black Sails reactors Jimmy Macram is the same way with those types of characters. Basically love the characters that push the story forward. No matter how awful they would be in real life. Most of us know it's a tv show and not real life.
@@aboutthat1440 Yes, it's a TV show and the TV show tells the audience that Slavery is normalized on Nassau. There's a difference between interpreting what the writers show you and creating your own fantasy. When you do that, you lose the message of the show. Yes it's a TV show but it explores these themes for a reason. It belittles the issue of slavery and what the pirates represented. Now if you're saying none of that matters then them excusing Flint's actions because they feel bad for him should also fall in the same category, after all it's "Just a TV show"...but I'm guessing it's only a TV show when it's convenient for your argument.
This show is probably my second favorite of those that I have done a full re-watch, just behind Mr Robot. Both have stories, arcs, and writing that lends itself to doing so. Black Sails at least holds the same level, where Mr. Robot manages to be even better than it was the first time (and it was great the first time).
As said before rewatching the show is worth it. Some thngs that said earlier made so much more sence if you know were go to in the end and so much little things that happend before get so much weight later. The show is writen and filmed so good. I wouldn t say "the best show ever" cause i don t know ot see all of them, but it s hard to find something equal or better. But that is just my oppinion.
I appreciate that you guys are talking less over dialogue now. Long comments and speculations should be left for after the episode so you don’t miss anything.
This episode is when I started to hate Max. She talks about her being a queen and what she built, she didn't build anything, Eleanor did, Max just took it over.
She did build it from her perspective. She came from a whore to being one of the main powers on the island. She was the one who did that from practically NOTHING. Ellenore did a lot but it was inherited things. She. Jolt nothing either. She was good at what she did. But she is the greatest betrayer on the show. Another great character on the show that I despise. Her playing victim irks me.
Flint kills an honest man and his wife for carrying out the law of punishing pirates and thieves, Milena : aww look at his eyes hes so saad JP was right about how women are irrationally drawn towards characters of pirates and vampires lol
Oddly I don't think it's because he's a pirate. It's because he's bi-sexual. Somehow ppl think that's "supporting" inclusivity when you can't hold characters accountable because of their sexuality. If anything it's very shallow reasoning and off-putting to say the least.
@@beymer4859 Really, because they don't perceive Walter White the same way or try to Justify his actions. Of course Flint is a great character, he's my favorite character in the show. It's always hilarious hearing ppl go "aww Vane" at his past when the very first thing we see Vane do is kill a group of ex-slaves who had a share in Flints crew so he and Singleton could have more votes. Then had Max, a former slave put in shackles for his men to have their way with. Then again I can't be too surprised when they are cheering for Flint who killed an innocent woman at the start of the episode, utterly bizarre.

John Silver is the reason the whole "Pirate with a wooden leg" trope exists.

You know it’s getting real when Edward freaking Teach comes out of retirement!! Blackbeard hype intensifies 😊
being marooned means you've been left somewhere with no means of escape or transportation away from there. "Marooned on a desert island"
I'm surprised they didn't realize Vane was once a slave. He's mentioned it a few times by this point.
we did know that, we just never thought about how that affected the vision he wanted for nassau
Black Beard is one of my favorite characters in this show you can feel the respect and fear when everyone says his name
The intro of one most infamous pirates always hype me, bow to B. Teach 🤫. BTW this season is Charles Vane's Season by far, enjoy it!
The next episode is one of my favorites. Big budget movie worthy to me.
Same here. Absolutely one of my favourites too.
RIP Ray Stevenson. Legendary actor taken from us way too soon. You guys have to watch Rome, he's so good in it.
And in Ahsoka
Marooned means stranded. On an island, ship, etc. Usually because someone left you there.

I mean yes thats part of the show, but also so is the move away from this status quo towards a more intersectional anti colonial politics.
They think pirates in Nassau fight for gay and slave rights
