When i was a kid, I took Tristan's side. When I rewatched this as a grown man, I took Alfred's side. When I experienced how much life can tear you apart, I realized neither were at fault.
I gotta say Alfred had to overcome a lot. The guy was a true hero at the end. Think about it, everyone loved Tristen more. Yet he still showed for his family at the end, even his father loved Tristen more. I'm sorry but Tristan is no different than a charismatic dog. 😂
Tristans side or Alfred's side? This is all on Susannah, dude. She jumped on every one of Colonel Ludlows sons' sticks. She tore through that family and ruined what little stability they had. What kind of person sleeps with two of their deceased partners' siblings and turn them even further against one another. Like, I know the brothers aren't blameless, but come on, she was the spark that started the fire.

Julia Ormond's beauty was "legendary" back then. She was basically flawless
She's still very beautiful. She looks every year of her age but just doesn't care. I love that she owns all the lines in her face.

Funny thing is she had another similar role in another period piece, 'First Knight', where she was coveted by multiple men and also stars another heartthrob (Richard Gere) with another British Knight (Sean Connery). Not as well-thought of like LotF though.
"It was a good death" is one of the most dramatic and heartbreaking ending lines of any movie ever. A fitting ending to an epic, sweeping heroic tragedy.
Nietzsche would have loved it.
"He was a rock they broke themselves against" was more heartbreaking.

The person who touched me most in this movie is Alfred. All his life he had to be the perfect older brother, protecting his younger brothers. I love how he said "I followed all the laws, man's and God's and Tristan followed none of them and they all loved Tristan more. My heart ached. He only wanted to feel accepted by his father. Thank you for your reaction to this beautiful movie!

I agree here. I think it was shameful to have Tristan and Susanna becoming romantic while Samuel was still alive. Later it could have been explained because of their shared trauma at loosing him. Tristan constantly puts the family at risk with his reckless behavior, and Susanna slept her way through every brother. She would have been completely ostracized from the society of the time. But the writer chose to apply 90s sensibilities to the storyline. Poor Alfred was somehow made to look like the villain of the family.

@@cathleenwarner1778 it's always a hard choice to be the bigger man. That's actually more heroic than anything else. Tristan is just a charismatic bear man, nothing particularly human about him.
That speech Alfred made where he talked about following all the rules, Man's, God's, etc. hit me like a ton of bricks when I was younger and watched this. I felt like Alfred. I always did the right thing, always followed the rules, and my brother never did. When I was younger that made me bitter because he was the one who always garnered the attention while deserving none of it. This movie hit me so damn hard.

Same. This was how me and my brother were known in the family and to outsiders. He was always wild and rebelious while I was more of a calm person. He broke the law at times while I tried to avoid it. He was agressive and people liked that while I was more of a pacifist. Ironically, in comparison to the movie, my younger brother also modeled. Nowadays I love him more than I ever did before. In the end, the bond that brothers share with eachother is almost unbreakable if both nurture it well. I couldn't wish for a better younger brother although this movie hit me hard, especially that speech.
Oh but the wild ones suffer for their wildness. Do not envy them for it
Women don't go for men who follow the rules. Alfred was the antithesis of nice guys finish last. Women will always go for the wild card, bad boy Tristan. That's why Brad Pitt's character was so popular with the female audience. Aiden Quinn although clean shaven and handsome just faded into history and forgotten about. Same with the wimpy younger brother. Don't even remember his name.
Legends of the Fall has one of the most beautiful scores and soundtrack ever.

Horner for sure killed it with this score. A masterpiece.
To this day, I still listen to it on a weekly basis while cleaning the kitchen. It's just an amazing piece of work.

One aspect of this movie is the ode to life - I feel that none of the main characters were wrong. Everyone tried to do good, but life throws curvballs and we all deal with it in different ways.

This was THE movie that made Brad Pitt a global heartbreaker. Back in the 90's I watched this movie several times, it's themes are timeless and the intense emotion always makes me cry. Interesting to see a new generation 're-discover' it.

Definitely recommend another Brad Pitt favorite w/ Tom Cruise - "Interview With A Vampire" - other great films with Mr. Pitt: "A River Runs Through It" "Troy" and "Meet Joe Black."

Yeah, A River Runs Through It has a similar vibe, but it's not quite the saga that this movie is... would recommend. Also, if memory serves, it's directed by a leading man from a prior era: Robert Redford.

Yes for A River Runs Through It!! So good
This is one of those movies that leaves me with a feeling of sad emptiness. You see them as young children with their father in the prime of his life, and by the end they're all gone...it makes me think about how many people's stories have started, been told, ended and then been forgotten, and how my story will one day end and whether I'll be important enough to anyone to be remembered when it does.
I completely understand this
At some point this world will no longer exist and everything will be forgotten. So my advice is to accept it and not stress over it.
You will be remembered by those who love you.

I used to feel the same way and it would make me depressed. I found God. He created you and I. He has an eternal purpose for you. Turn to Jesus Christ and discover the eternal relationship with the God who loves you and wants you to be with Him forever.
What broke me was Tristan saying, “you’re doing good” during Samuel’s death scene 😭🤧
Who is Tristan?
Four years after this film Brad Pitt and Sir Anthony Hopkins did another fantastic film together called Meet Joe Black. You ladies should definitely watch this. It’s a great love story and the acting between Brad Pitt and Sir Anthony Hopkins is outstanding.
I was obsessed with this movie. Susannah was the most heartbreaking character for me, when she sees Tristan and his family in the street it breaks me every time. Her heartbreak is too much.
And thus the song.. "Oh Suzanna, Suzanna.. oh don't you cry for me [...]"
And her hair. I would have given 10 years off my life to have her hair
Her character is very well acted
I think what gets me in the end is that had Suzanna just held on for a little bit longer she literally would have been the mother of Tristan's babies after Alfred takes custody so Tristan can escape. She would have raised little Samuel, and despite all the heartbreak I do believe that would have saved her.
Her problem unfortunately was a lack of faith. She lost faith Tristan would return so she married Alfred. She lost faith in herself and her situation so she killed herself. Either time she would have gotten what she wanted had she held on.
She belongs to the streets.
Incredible movie. One of the "stars" of this movie is Bart the Bear. He was raised by Doug Seus and was in 13 movies and a few TV shows. After working with Bart on this movie, Brad Pitt narrated a documentary about Bart and Doug Seus. Doug and his wife are amazing people. I think that Doug appeared in this movie as the old "Tristan" that fought the bear at the end.
The Bear is also an incredible movie starring Bart. ❤
Bart was a legendary animal actor. The Edge was his best role, he was incredible in that movie.
This is a kind of movie that isn't really made anymore. A true epic family tale, like The Godfather. I remember being more or less forced into going to the cinema with my girlfriend at the time. I went to watch it three more times after that without her and it's still one of my alltime favorites.
When I saw this in a theatre, my husband and I had to wait til everyone left at the end of the movie because I was crying, actually sobbing, so much I couldn't get out of my seat. I have never been able to watch it again until now with you. After watching your reactions I am sure, once again, I still can not watch the full movie again. Great movie and great reactions from you two. Thank you again for your lovely channel.

I thought the end was happy. These days most of us die slow in a bed with tubes hooked up to us. A good death is never a bad thing.
Being the oldest of three brothers, and after losing my baby brother, I found this film hard to watch. The "reunited" scene at the end brought cheers from the audience.
Movies not that sad it is a wonderful movie don't get me wrong but not to get overly emotion like that but I guess to each their own
Unbelievable film, every box ticked, AMAZING!! Class! Zero CGI, just a great script, cast, acting, locations, direction, they really don't make them like this anymore, top reaction as per ladies 🙌

Hardly 'whining' about CGI was I, simply said there's none in this film, didn't say it was bad or good or that I hate it or that it's overused but since we're on the subject, raised by you I might add, some of us prefer our movie experience to be based on things more intricate like a script, a story, a character, location, cinematography, acting, you know that thing actors used to do before marvel and Disney turned them into green screen puppets.
We haven't all got the attention span of your average tiktoker and some of us like a bit more depth, effort, skill and realism than bright shiny lights and unrealistic imagery, but if you're that easily pleased or mentally/visually stimulated, good for you, what a time to be alive... As you were

Saw this in the theater in college. I leaned over to my girlfriend and said she gets a pass if somehow Brad Pitt showed up. She elbowed me acting mad. About an hour later she leaned over and said, “I’ll take you up on that.” It was so funny. All the women in the theater gushed. I actually fell in love with his acting. He wasn’t just a pretty boy anymore after that to me. Great reaction ladies.
"Legends of the Fall" is definitely one of the best dramas ever. One of my top ten favorite movies.
I love when they do a review together! Their reactions to the ending when Alfred saves the day was great.
Best part of the movie. His family pushed him away, and he still had their backs when it really mattered.
Only after Susannah died & losing Isabel were Al & Tris able to reunite & become brothers again I personally think losing Isabel at the hands of his govt associates that told Alfred "Father was right the govt cares for nothing or no one but themselves they don't care who they hurt they killed my baby sis, my baby bro, they threatened my family oh it's on boys nobody messes with the Ludlows." And the sick twist is no one outside the family will every know that their beloved congressmen was involved in murdering govt officials & their lackies lol.
No matter how many times I see this movie, I cry every time. Such an incredible film. Honestly sealed the deal for Brad Pitt for being more of an actor than just looks. The acting and cinematography are top notch. Of course let’s not forget the gorgeous score by the late James Horner.

Aidan Quinn is also in the fantastic Johnny Depp film, "Benny and Joon". It's, uh...kind of quirky, in the best way and quite a beautiful love story.

This movie is haunting. It is so good but it takes a little chunk of your heart/soul each time you watch it.
I cant watch again for that reason....one of the BEST EVER but for that reason its like you have to be ready for a good cry and to have your guts twisted.

This is one of my top 10 movies of all time. It's so good. Some parts may seem slow, but the characters and relationships are so fleshed out. It's so good. This is fantastic movie making at its finest. Direction, storytelling, music, setting, acting, casting, emotion, atmosphere, etc, etc.
But for real, Brad Pitt has NEVER looked better. I remember seeing this at the movies with a friend when we were 14 or 15, and we were just SHOOK by how fine that man was. Shook, I tell you!

This music takes me back! My honors history teacher in high school played the Legends of the Fall soundtrack anytime we were supposed to be working quietly. It was a little funny and unexpected, because he was the gruff football coach. But he was also a history buff and an awesome teacher!

James Horner, the musical composer of this movie, is on the Mount Rushmore of Movie Composers in my book. He did this one, Braveheart, Titanic, Field of Dreams, etc... guy was just a non stop stud.

“A River Runs Through It” should be your next Brad Pitt film. It was released two years before this one and it is also one of my favorites which you will also love.
I was totally thinking that!! It's just an incredible film by Robert Redford with an impeccable cast, including Brad Pitt...a true story about a very interesting family and Craig Scheffers' character
Was thinking the same thing! I keep waiting for someone to react to it, but I think it’s one of those films that was pretty well known when it came out, but has since fallen through the cracks. I think the general similarities with this movie (Brad Pitt, early 20th century Montana, family drama) have probably compounded that as well.

@@lewstone5430 Yeah, I definitely think that A River Runs Through It is a better movie, but of course that’s subjective.
I checked Rotten Tomatoes & River has an 80% and Legends a 58% & I actually think those are both pretty fair ratings (though if it’s just my opinion, I’d be inclined to bump both films up 10%, to 90% & 68%).
This movie is one of the few movies ever made that I can say is a masterpiece everything about it is perfect.
I remember i cried like 5 time watching this film. Brad was at his most gorgeous but Aidan, that man and his angel face 🤩
Alfred was played by Aidan Quinn, his first film was called "Reckless" and I highly recommend it. When it was released, Aidan was hailed to be the next James Dean. Secondly, Samuel was played by Henry Thomas whose first role was Elliot in the blockbuster, "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial".
He's also so great in "Benny and Joon". Would love to see Cassie react to that.

Aidan Quinn is so expressive, just a terrific actor all around...in fact I think he may have given the best performance in this film (and that's saying a lot considering he was acting alongside Anthony Hopkins and Julia Ormond!).
The whole cast killed it but I loved Julia Ormond in this, she was amazing. You can't help but love her character in this film.
The best way I can describe how I felt after watching this film is "raw." I was emotionally raw. I bought the soundtrack after watching the movie and I cried even more. Such a beautiful score!
This has been one of my favorite movies ever since I watched this in theatres. I came out of it dazed and confused..it was the first time a movie inflicted anything close to that on me. I wanted to admire Tristan, yet felt the pain of those around him. I was thwarted with a range of emotions and was barely able to stumbled out the theatre. As I did so, it was the first time, but not the last time that I realized something could captivate me so. This truly is a masterpiece, and one of James Horner's best composition. RIP..

Those deep, emotional, soul-crushing moments really break your heart! "The Feels" in this one are up there! *The Native Fellow "One Stab" (Gordon Tootoosis) is a good friend of mine's father. He passed away years ago right here in my hometown, Saskatoon, in central Canada. He was actually, a very wise, friendly and very cool gentleman. Another reaction knocked out the park, ladies! ( :E
My heart aches for Alfred. It was such a heart wrenching, overwhelming movie, but it was perfect. And the music!!
IT is Anthony Hopkins....and the youngest son is played by Henry Thomas... who as a little boy in 1980 played Elliot in the Spielberg Classic, E.T. Legends of the Fall...really was a sweeping epic film in it's scope and star power. It's a moving look at life of the family bridging post civil war American West through the early 1030's. Hope you enjoyed!

I've never been able to figure out why this film didn't hit 'bigger' than it did.
For a movie to "hit big" I think it has to be a movie that Kids and Adults will both want to see. I don't imagine this film had many viewers under the age of 21.

I loved the honesty of Alfred, identifying with his father that they both loved women who did not love them. Despite the brotherly conflict, I saw them both as victims of circumstance trying to do the right thing.
Well the first time he left he wasn't married and had no kids....the last time he left to go into hiding basically to protect his family. So no, not even remotely comparable.
Some of the best movies were made in 1993. Such as, "Son In Law," "Menace II Society," "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," "Dazed and Confused," "Tombstone," "Schindler's List," "Rudy," "The Sandlot," "The Good Son," "A Perfect World," "Grumpy Old Men," "Groundhog Day," "Cool Runnings," "Mrs. Doubtfire," but yall have to watch, "A River Runs Through It"

"A Perfect World" is a great movie. I love the morality themes that run through it which pit what is right and ethical against the justice and law enforcement systems.

Ed Zwick's movies are all like this: powerful, epic, beautiful, and sad. Glory, The Last Samurai, Blood Diamond, Defiance, Courage Under Fire. All great films that break your heart.
Edward zwick is a genius director. And James Horner ( RIP ) knew how to conjure so much emotion in his music.
Since you are such a big admirer of Brad Pitt, I strongly recommend A River Runs Through It. It is my all-time favorite movie. He's young like here, and the pretty unruly brother like here.

Hey ladies, no need to be embarrassed about swooning over Brad…. Legends of the fall is absolutely the movie that all of us fell completely deeply in love with Brad…. It’s almost impossible not to blush when you’re watching him in this movie…. :)
The bear in this movie was played by Bart the Bear, who was a famous animal actor that played in many movies including The Great Outdoors, The Edge, and The Bear, just to name a few. He usually played grizzly bears, but was actually a larger Kodiak bear from Alaska.
“Thelma and Louise” is Brad Pitt’s first major film. You’ll love that film. ❤️

Iconic movie. Brad's part is small but obviously memorable. Susan Sarandan and Geena Davis are incredible, Ridley Scott did an incredible job, Diablo Cody won an Oscar for the script and the soundtrack is amazing

Knowing Cassie and Carly's love for romantic movies, I have to admit that this movie, above all others that we've seen when Cassie shows what films are upcoming, is the one I've most anticipated. So much so that I've already watched this reaction 3 times! Absolute PROPS to the real MVP, our favorite editor, who knows exactly what to put in and leave out of these reactions. The zoom in on Cassie after Tristan pulled Susannah in for a kiss.... THAT - WAS - AWESOME! 😂

God, I've lost count of how many times I've watched this. Personally, I'm sure I'm a masochist because it still makes me cry. Every. Damn. Time. Even cut up like this I cried. To me, that's the mark of an epic movie. I think this is such an underrated film. Everything was so spot on. Yes, Brad Pitt was phenomenal, also very underrated. Yes, he also was and is beauty personified. Too beautiful to be real at times. That's what has made his career so interesting to watch. This film is what made me sit up and take notice of his chops for the first time. Se7en smacked me in the face and announced he was ready to play with the big boys. I will always hold Legends close to my heart though. I think because I identified with Tristan and his inner bear. We all have our demons. Thank you. Seriously. I needed this today.

Hey girls. I was watching Legends of the Fall for the 10th time I think and it still makes you have all those emotional feelings. Then I can across y’all for the first time. Watching y’all was almost as entertaining. Y’all are ADORABLE. I’m a new fan.
This movie is just one of the most amazing works of art I have ever seen. It just has a special place and meaning in my heart. It has levels of beauty and sadness I have never seen in a film before. My second time seeing it just now. Truly a unique film. I wanted to visit a review and in a way experience it with others and see how it also affected others.
This movie solidified Brad Pitt’s status as a Hollywood heartthrob and instantly pushed him into movie star status. After this movie he did Interview with a Vampire and shortly after that he did Se7en. Julia Ormond appears in another Brad Pitt film: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (directed by David Fincher of Se7en and Fight Club). That movie is a beautiful movie that will leave you contemplating life and love and the beauty of the world. You would absolutely love that movie as well.

This movie is an emotional rollercoaster. It's hard to think of others like it.
I saw this on its original theatrical release and I found it ironic that it was Tristan, who outlived all of them and did indeed die a “warriors death.”
Tristan had his own demons but it was his failure to protect Samuel that ripped his “spirit” apart.

I don't know this part of history well, but to my understanding, America at that time did not declared war to Germany, so its citizens could face backlash from the government by going to war under the American flag, so some 35000 brave Americans crossed to Canada and enlisted there.
It has been more than 20 years since i saw this movie, but i remember the ladies back then where in ecstasy by the acting of Brad Pitt, ahahah.
What an EPIC movie! This is exactly what today's world is missing. This great cinematic masterpiece allows men and women to be fully drawn in and to forget their own reality. Just for a moment. An emotional roller-coaster. For future reference, "A River Runs through it" would be another GREAT watch.
This is my number one favorite movie of ALL time.
For years I dealt with my PTSD, after serving 5 tours in the Middle East in combat. I did 25 years total. This movie is sad, but I feel more in tune with the movie, Flags of Our Fathers. But, I know the pain of losing friends in combat and it’s tough AF when you make it through and they don’t. 🇺🇸

I’ve been waiting for this one. The VHS copy came with a poster of Brad Pitt in character and you’d better believe that stayed on my wall for years. I first fell for him in Interview With a Vampire but this movie solidified my respect for him as an actor. My mom and I saw this together in the theater and we both cried so much. Honestly it’s a great memory. I’m glad I got to relive it with you guys!
Brad Pitt is such an amazing actor, but my fellow Welshman, Sir Anthony is so, so great in anything he does.
I most recently saw Sir Anthony in The Father and he was of course amazing. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it.

This film has so much going on throughout it, the depth of emotion from love to hate, from happiness to despair simply takes you on a journey which is both wonderful and awful at the same time. All the characters played their parts superbly. Your reactions I think were like all reactions to this masterpiece, amazing. Thank you for sharing.
I knew this one was going to break you. I have watched this movie maybe 4-5 times and I start crying everytime Tristan comes home like clockwork. There is this prodigal son motive that completely breaks me every time. Also, I love the metaphors of her being the water that split the rocks and him being the rock they all crush themselves against. Powerful stuff. And by the way, if you like Brad Pitt in this, I should mention that this is around the same time he starred in Interview with the Vampire, just saying :)

This movie was so epic with an outstanding cast and cinematography. But the score was so amazing that it made the powerful scenes more emotional. I ran out of tears watching this.

I am 65, so ole enough to be your Granpa! I first saw this movie on TV in 1998 at Christmas time. I have since watched it about once a year and to this day cannot get through it without shedding tears. It is extremely powerful. I began to think I would never find anything like this again. UNTIL, the new series 1923. I would love to get your take on it as well. There are SOOO many parallels between that series to this movie. Thank you so much for sharing this!
