"You will account for me" is such a great line and delivery.
What Blackbeard and Flint have been warning about came true this episode -- nearly all of the men on that beach turned on their promise to defend Nassau the second they got a "better offer". They were never proper pirates, as Vane would say.

I love the Max monologue in the cave. It is so fundamental to her character that she grew up looking in from the outside. That she stood "among the bugs and the filth" staring in on what should have by all rights been hers (warmth, love, safety). That little girl was her age. The man inside was *her* father.
But only one of them was kept warm and loved and safe inside that room.
    It's really heartbreaking.

It's a great scene and really highlights the point that she and Anne diverge. Max needs that room, needs to be a part of it. Anne would never in a million years want to join a room like that.

I absolutely love the small bit where Flint and John are rowing out to the whale and the conversation they have about the Irca gold. Silver needed to say it, and Flint needed to hear it, and Silver also needed to know how Flint would react to that information. And even at Flint's lowest point (still having Miranda PTSD, starving, dying of thirst, marooned in the middle of the ocean on a broken ship), he shows restraint towards Silver and even laughs it off as if he's impressed, as he should be. The bromance is real.

All the scenes with Flint and Miranda are so sad and gorgeous at the same time. He can't let her go and she will guide him to where he must leave her, tearing up just writing that
So many other great moments. Max and Anne had a great scene

@5:42 lol, All the murders Flint did, including Mr. Gates, innocent women on island raids,… the way they killed Eleanor‘s dad, anyone in this way, really…. even Eleanor putting out assassins on Jack and Anne, and nearly getting vein killed multiple times… , we’re now drawing the line at Blackbeard? 😅

Of course the irony is, Woodes Rodgers is offering everything Thomas wanted but Flint is now so driven by rage and revenge it no longer matters.

Also, I love how much you both love the Flint and Miranda relationship. I love it too, and I feel like some people kind of sleep on it. When the Thomas reveal happens I’ve seen some think that this means Flint loved Miranda less, or that he was never in love with her in the same way. But that isn’t true. Flint loved - loves - both of them deeply and truly. If anything, Thomas’s death caused the bond between Miranda and Flint to become even more unbreakable. Twisted and tangled, but unbreakable. Dream Miranda puts it best when she says she had “loved him like no other” and so that means she also “knows him like no other”. And Flint in turn is “ruined” in the wake of her death, left without anyone that truly knows him anymore.
The idea that Miranda “birthed” Flint also applies in numerous ways. For one thing, she was the one who first started to bring him closer to herself and Thomas. She invited Flint in with the invitation of a book she and Thomas both read and loved (Don Quixote), and further encouraged him to become closer despite what civilization told them was appropriate or not.

Sadly ppl just latched onto the thing that fit into whatever identity debate is happening at the tine so after the Thomas reveal, it was "He never loved her" because he loved Thomas. It's just bizarre. He went on a murder spree after she died, I don't know how much clearer it can be made. Plus his comment here that he was "ruined over her", in contrast to his loss of Thomas. He also just had more time with Miranda so they've been through a lot more and had time to grow together over the past 10 years.

Great reaction and analysis as always! The parallels between the characters was subtly brilliant writing next to the slower plot. The sense of loss or being lost and the fear that comes knowing a change is necessary. Max diverging with Anne but confronting it to create stability and John no longer controlled by his greed realizing theres more value in people than gold. Flint conjuring Miranda in a time of uncertainty knowing he no longer has a stable home to retreat to. After having to kill those men in desperation hes finally questioning if his revenge is worth what he and his crew has been through. Vane dealing with his own parental figure and being given another ultimatum. The "strongest" characters looking the most vulnerable. Most underrated episode imo

Not sure why some ppl thought these pirates were in Nassau for noble cause or fighting against tyrannical England. They're mostly criminals who murdered, stole and r&ped. They're in Nassau because it's lawless and they can't be brought to justice. Sure there are a few men who were unjustly forced into bad situations but the majority are horrible men who would turn on anyone or kill you for a few coins. The writers have highlighted that countless times but I think ppl are a bit desperate to romanticize what the pirates are. This idea that they're rooting for some of the underserved groups in Nassau but let's be honest everyone we're following is doing it for selfish reasons, not even the slaves trust the pirates.

yeah their is alot of romanticizing with the pirates of black sails. I like Vane as a badass character but everyone forgets he had max gang-graped by his men. People love Flint but he killed Gates and has killed innocents for his desire for revenge.

In this discussion about civilization, are they blocking out the fact that Flint was apart of the British Navy? A rising star, no less. Do you think he wasn't doing all the bad things you are saying England was a part of? Thomas' wealth was also built on a lot of those same horrible deeds. What you're saying isn't untrue but let's not be hypocritical about it. As for Eleanor, when she left, only Flint was on board with a legitimate Nassau. None of the other crews were supporting them so as far as she's concerned using force is the most effective way to see the plan through. Frankly she's the only persons that has the same Agenda for all 3 seasons so far. She was criticized for letting her "feelings" affect her judgement, yet here we are with Flint lashing out because of his feelings and ppl want to praise him for it.
Your idea about making Nassau this place where anyone can love who they want and free the slaves was the Season 1 plan but of course in season 2 they had to compromise and decide on the deal with Peter Ash. I think you guys are mistaking Flint's goals for the pirates goals. The pirates don't know about Flint's relationship with Thomas and they certainly weren't ever fighting for anything like that or even for the slaves. They're in it for themselves which is why they just took the pardons without hesitation.

I feel like, if you think they're romanticizing the story, you're doing the complete opposite. The fact that James McGraw was in the Navy is a big part of the story because both he & Thomas were blind to England's deeper problems. Thomas wanted meaningful change to happen, and England wasn't going to let that happen. Thomas was privileged and naive, yes, but he meant to change his family's legacy. To change England. James McGraw loved the Navy, it was his life. He probably did do horrible things for the Navy, but I'm sure he was told it was for good reasons. To protect "civilization", etc. At that point, he didn't know they were mostly lies. He was less naive than Thomas, yes, but still naive. He learns from his experience, learns to know England and the cost of imperialism (even more after Charlestown), and he adapts his views of the world and his plans. Flint is a complex character, with more than one motivation. Revenge is one, but so is his disillusionment with England. I fully believe he wants meaningful change, especially after he meets certain other characters later in season 3.
Piracy was way more complex than you make it out to be, in this comment as well as previous ones you've left. People didn't become pirates just for chaos and greed. Some did, sure, but it wasn't the most common reason. Queen Elisabeth encouraged privateering, but after the end of the War of Spanish Succession, a lot of sailors were left unemployed. The only option were merchantmen, and work conditions on those ships were notoriously horrible. Wages were very low, captains often became power-hungry, etc. Some pirates were bloodthirsty. The real Charles Vane was known to be, but a lot of pirates...weren't. They used fear as a tactic to avoid bloodshed. Blackbeard was notorious for that, as was Sam Bellamy. They were mostly just...men trying to survive. That's why the articles were such a big deal and were voted on by all the men. Every man had the same share (with a few exceptions, like the captain, quartermaster, boatswain, carpenter, and the gunner). As far as homosexuality went, they didn't really give a fuck either way. Matelotage was a thing. It was a male-dominated world, and homosexuality tends to become common when women aren't around (the reverse is also true). We're social creatures who crave connection.
Slavery is a lot more complex. Some pirates actively participated in the slave trade, some didn't. Some freed slaves (who would form or join maroon communities), some offered them employment. There wasn't one real way of doing things. There's a number of interesting dissertations on the subject.
The entire point of the show is that the world isn't black or white. It's shades of grey. People can be more than one thing. Pirates could be selfish and greedy, but they mostly wanted to live in a "fair" society. What "fair" meant depended on the crew, varied from pirate to pirate. It wasn't just lawlessness. There was a code of conduct. It's partly what makes them so fascinating to historians.
Hopefully you (or anyone else reading) learned a bit more about piracy today! There's so much disinformation going around about what pirates were or weren't. They weren't necessarily good or bad. They were just...people who chose self-determination.
With that in mind, let's look at the goals of Rackham and Vane. What they wanted to build was a society with self-determination, where you can control your own life. That's the "pirates" goal in the show (we are no longer talking real life). While Flint has additional motivations, he wants the same thing for Nassau (and beyond, but that comes later and is a conversation for another video). In a society that's truly self-determined, who cares who you love? Acceptance of homosexuality is not what the pirates are fighting for, but freedom to love who you want is a byproduct of self-determination.
Point being, it's complex, and you're waving away a lot of that complexity away with your comments, both from what piracy was in real life and what it is in the show. We all contain multitudes, fellow Black Sails enjoyer. Take the time to look at all those complexities and enjoy them!
