I love the DS Lite. - plays DS and GBA games - no region lock - super pocketable - screens look surprisingly good for a handheld from this generation - Dpad and buttons feel great
Regarding your R4 card not working past a certain year, that is known as a time bomb, there are other firmwares you can install onto your R4 card that fix this. Just have to check that the firmware is compatible with your R4 card Of course setting the date back is an equally effective method to get around it and much less of a hassle too
I agree, one of the best nintendo portables ever, the best of both worlds, people go hard on buying the nintendo sp, but the real gem is the ds lite, l play all my games on the ds lite, and reserve all my gbc and og gameboy games for the nintendo sp. It's always a great pickup system, no lockout regions, and has one of the biggest libraries of video games ever, Great Video.
Yesterday I went to CEX and told my wife ill just stroll around to town for a walk but then I saw a ds lite in a box checked the unit and in so much flawless condition. I impulse bought it as well. Now waiting for my pokemon soulsilver game. 😅😊
The DS Lite is my favorite DS console too. I have so many fond memories of using mine when I was younger. It came in so many nice looking colors, it has backwards compatibility to play GBA games, and I like it's lighter build that's easy to hold and the brighter screen compared to the original.
I just bought a DS Lite too. It does feel cheap -- I think the best way to play a DS game is on the DSi -- but it also has the gba slot. My ideal DS would be a DSi with a gba slot. I carry around my lite though because its not in as good of condition (my DSi looks brand new) and because of the dual games. I got Pokemon Black in my DS slot and Emerald in my gba slot.
Honesty I agree. The dsi has a much higher quality screen and feel to it. I usually play ds games on a dsi for its screen quality alone. But for me the lite feels more comfortable to play on, plus the lack of gba support on dsi is very upsetting
Yea i don't like how mushy the buttons on the ds lite feel, sometimes you cant tell if the buttons were pressed properly or not , sometimes it doesn't respond to the press and you have to press harder. Meanwhile dsi's buttons you immediately know as soon as you feel that click
@@theprocrastinator6813I have no idea what y’all are talking about. I’ve had mine for over a decade and the buttons have not changed in feel at all, there’s a pretty clear feeling when it’s been pressed and I have never had problems with it registering properly. It’s pretty comparable to the buttons on my switch lite but with a slightly longer travel, not amazingly tactile but does the job. In terms of build quality… I can see how one would call it cheap, but comparing it to literally any gameboy before it and considering just how durable they manage to be, I can’t really fault it on that. It feels moderately plasticky but it is built like a little brick and even over a decade later the battery can last *months* on a single charge, and literal years sitting on standby. Idk, if it’s cheap it is cheap, but it’s absurdly high value and I don’t think it sacrifices ease or comfort of use.
Good find! A little superglue will probably fix that hinge right up. As for the screen dust...that would bother me so much that I'd go online to find a replacement screen lens. :P
I was lucky before the prices went up I grabbed two boxed DS lite, (USA) cobalt blue and crimson red. Both used but like new prob never touched! I used to like impulse buying when prices were down… the lite is my fav DS
The DS lite is one of the best electronic devices that I’ve ever used. I swear these things will be the last functioning consoles remaining on earth after the apocalypse, they’re built like a plastic brick and only need to be charged like once per season. All the ones in my household as a child are still working just fine, they’re still fun to play and somehow easier to pick up and enjoy than any other handheld I’ve owned.
I just got my ds lite out of cupboard haven’t played it for years plugged the charger in and to my surprise the battery charged up can’t believe how good this still is I will be playing it more often now.
Thank you for playing Pokémon Ranger, from Ring Town to Real World to stepping inside another world again. And I'm thinking of the Adams Brothers of Dwarf Fortress' grandma Ringland. Congratulations, Sam on actualizing one of the childhood fantasies! Your inner child can rest easy.
If you are a tech guy, you can reshell and replace the screens of a DS lite for less money than a pristine one. There are pokedex shells, retro nintendo consoles shells etc made by extremerate that are not too expensive and very good quality. I bought 2 "broken hinge" consoles for 30 bucks each. I bought screens (the OG ones were yellow) 10 bucks per screen and a different shell for each 30 bucks per shell (one nes and one SNES, the shells packages offer all kinds of buttons, a top screen lens, a stylus, a GBA port cover a new hinge mechanism, new rubber pad for the buttons, new screws, new rubber knobs to hide the screw holes, it is insane). It cost me 80 bucks per console and they feel and look brand new.
Will that crack in the hinge eventually become an issue/spread? I have a DS lite I’ve had since childhood and your observation of the crack made me curious whether mine was cracked too. Sure enough I have a crack in almost the exact same spot. I worry because I notice when I open the screen, the crack widens. Thank you!
I was in highschool when the DS lite came out so I never got a chance to get one but now I'm definitely looking for one. I really want to play gba games on it even though I have a GBA SP
My age 71yr old I had two for years the Nintendo ds Xl and the smaller one what I like about them you can use them anywhere you don't need WiFi my wife addict to playing 42 classic games I have just started playing chessmaster i also have two game boys I bought for my daughters back in the day my grandsons like playing when they visit their still in working order
That stress crack on the plastic (hinge area) is a common issue on the original release white DS Lite. This is the first I’ve seen it on a Cobalt blue one
Retro gaming stores can be expensive so i got an R4 DSHC dual core smart update card , and it came with a 16gb sd card which i loaded with the ds games that i used to have as a kid, using the usb adapter it came with. Perfect starter bundle for players who want to play ds games quickly. Im playing My Sims Racing at the moment and there’s no problems so far. I didn’t even have to set it up my sd or format it because it was already pre configured with a kernel. But i would have to format my other sd cards that i bought seperately. Anyways, I’m loving my purchase , its totally worth it if you’re on a budget. I love my pink ds lite!
❗️I'm from 🏴 and this colour combination never came to us in PAL regions. I remember seeing this variation in Nintendo Official Magazine and wanted it for the longest time. I now have one (had one for about two years) and love the glittery blue lid. I've 'customised' mine by using an unofficial blue stylus. I've also put a glossy black battery cover in place of the matt black one and used a dark blue GBA Slot Cover instead of the matt black one. I also wanted the blue Japanese one and did get one CIB but had to sell it on as it wouldn't read my R4 Card. I think I remember Nintendo updated the firmware so future (at the time) DS Lites wouldn't be able to play them.
I impulse bought a brand new Japanese clear black 2ds from eBay. Great decision since homebrew lets you access a bunch of stuff and Japanese consoles are cheaper. I only (I say only because new 3ds consoles can be really expensive) spent $200 on a brand new discontinued console.
I found a nintendo refurbished black ds lite online that wasnt used after the refurbishment about a year ago for 40$ and I couldn't decide on buying it but ended up kinda regretting it as both my own ds lite and dsi xl aren't in the best condition due to 10yrs+ of wear
Seeing you open this box fills me with so much unexpected nostalgia. Man I remember saving up all the money I had for like a year in 5th/6th grade to get one of these bad boys 🥲
I already had a dsi xl, a gba sp and a 3ds, but I recently got a ds lite, and I kinda forgot how cool of a device it is (i already had a white one, but I was robbed and they took it from me sadly). Am currently using mine just to rewrite bootleg cartridges from aliexpress, cuz I'm worried the hinge will fail on it anytime, and I use the dsi xl for everything else.
Always been a dsi kind of person, but if that ain’t a score I dunno what is.. Also it might be worth trying to take apart the pink one and replace its digitizer if you haven’t already. It’s a fairly easy repair compared to any ds systems afterwards.
I think the ds lite should be able to us the same chargers as the GBA and the 3 ds. It's hard to find a ds lite charger. Other than that I really like it 😅
personally really enjoyed the DS when I had it but never enjoyed the DS games for zelda lot of the inputs from what I remember were just annoying and would much rather just press a button than swipe at my screen pretty crazy you got it for that price though
I just bought a ds lite again I had one but I sold it so I bought one again to play ds and gba games I got it on mercari for $36 with hello kitty decals and this weekend I’m going to my local flea market to hopefully get a 3ds because can’t play ds or 3 ds or gba Pokémon games on my switch
I got that same exact ds for Christmas when i was little i think in 2010 and it came with sonic classic edition until in 2011 Christmas i got a 3ds which was a perfect upgrade and came with spongebob squiggle pants and asphalt 3d after awhile of not using my blue ds it didnt turn on it had a blown fuse so i used my ds games on my 3ds just cause of the joystick but after using my 3ds and playing ds games on it looks horrible im actually gonna save up to fix my red ds lite lime ds lite that a limited edition ds my dad got me at a pawnshop when i was little for $60 and my blue ds lite
ok what color is the ds?! ive seen people say its night blue, ive seen people say its arctic blue, ive seen people say its cobalt blue, I DONT EVEN KNOW ANYMORE
LOL UA-cam LISTENS. I impulse bought a 3ds today.
No fucking way I literally bought one on impulse today what are the odds
No way I legit impulse bought one a week ago
The 3ds is an impulse buying system
Same here

older r4 cards are more prone to having them, modern day ones though not as much
theres 'no timebomb' ones sold now as well

Only downside of the DS Lite is the yellowing screens. It’s hard to find a decent unit that doesn’t have the blemish.
@@Pmike404I've had my polar white DS lite since 2006 It hasn't got the yellow screen problem but I have seen It on others

I bet her boyfriend thinks your DS is pretty cool too
That may be a refurbished unit or reshelled that might be how the dust got under there in the re shell process
It's so cute, like a makeup box. Although can be a pain to keep clean with its glossiness.

I've been itching to get a DS for awhile now! I never had it as a kid, the gameboy advance was the last handheld i had.
