She’s in love with him because 1. Naofumi’s a pretty good looking guy, no homo, and 2. Because he saved her from being a slave and basically took her in and treated her as a person. He put her before himself such as when they ate (he would get himself cheap meals, and her quality food), and gave her a home/good weaponry.

In the Web Novel it's explained that Raphtalia grew up with stories of the Shield Hero being super heroic and very kind toward Demi-Humans.It's the one thing she held onto when she became traumatized when her parents died. When Naofumi came along, as the Shield Hero, and exceded her expectations FOR THE SHIELD HERO she couldn't help but fall in love with him.
The fact that he's more caring, more heroic, and him relying/needing her is more than she ever imagined. She couldn't help it.

@@zellrang which is probably why it didn't happen because I kind of agree with the sentiment that the timing was really weird, I don't doubt that it will happen, but the anime is probably taking a liberty here and saving that for another time since they stated that the dynamic between Naofumi and Raph was something they wanted to focus on in the adaptation.

Here's the thing: Naofumi at the end of Season 1 acknowledged Raphtalia's feelings and agreed to stay on after the Waves, and Raphtalia interpreted his acknowledgement as he would stay *with her*, and I assume the rest of the supporting characters eavesdropping on their conversation would have the same interpretation, especially with the hug and implied kiss Raphtalia gave Naofumi afterward. Regardless of the ethics surrounding their relationship, or the perception thereof from those of us on the outside, I think Naofumi and Raphtalia are destined to be together, and the society of that other world is going to ensure that happens. Either that, or the various other worlds will merge as a consequence of the Waves, and Naofumi and Raphtalia will be cast as the ones most capable of connecting the societies and peoples of the various worlds, thus making a relationship between the two necessary to set an example of how people of different backgrounds and races can coexist.
Note that I have only seen the first season of the anime and have not read the LNs, so this is conjecture with limited spoilers for the end of Season 1, and in no way a purposeful spoiler of future content should I be correct.

I ship it. You mention mental age but frankly, I think that's actually Raphtalia's strong point. Despite physically being only 10, she's extremely mature, straight-laced and rational, and is in effect Naofumi's moral compass, keeping him in line whenever he gets a little too dickish. Honestly, I think she's the most mentally mature character in the show (except perhaps when it comes to love, but it's her first love, and who's really mature in that situation ever?), which makes me think a demi-human's growth with levels might actually not just be physical but also mental too; as far as I know, that was never specified, and Naofumi just assumes she's still a child on the inside.
So yeah, no problem here for me, since the reason age of consent laws exist in the first place is to protect the mentally immature. Raphtalia proves herself to be anything but that time and again. If she acted like a child in an adult's body, or was a human with human ageing like Melty, I'd have a different view on it.

This relationship is awesome. Not your typical couple. But I like it. I like slow progression relationships in anime/ manga stories. Sometimes I don't like one sided relationships but in this case, it works. Too because since she age quickly, she still needs time. It's good he is not moving so fast. I see them being a close couple later. Their maturity will match up later, when he is not so focused on revenge and ill treatment.
I like it too. I wonder though where they're gonna end up if they do become a couple. Will he give up on going home to stay with her ? Or will he find a way to bring both girls with him back to Earth ? Because he does mention a couple of times that he wants to go back asap.
I just assumed that Raph was clingy cos she has PTSD-induced separation anxiety.

I don't think that Naofumi is unaware of Raphtalia's love for him, rather he is either; 'a', playing hard to get (I highly doubt), or 'b' he wants to focus on getting home and protecting his team. Naofumi likely believes that forming a closer relationship would put his tasks at risk and remember, he sees himself as a role model or at least a father figure to her.

Raphtalia's trauma was so deep that basic human kindness seemed like a boon to her.
Also, the moment at the mines, where he cancelled her curse and told her to run while he would stall the two-headed dog was all she needed to swear her life to Naofumi, her kind master who now was ready to die in order to protect her. That was when Raphtalia decided Naofumi was her future.
The moment at the castle where she held him all night as he cried, made him food(which he could now taste because she gave him a new hope) and when the King told Naofumi to take the money and get lost, she said, "It means we don't have to stay at this place anymore", was when Naofumi decided to see Raphtalia as more of an equal friend then just as a subordinate fighting for his sake.

It’s beautiful how one episode was dedicated to how Naofumi helped her over come her problems and struggles then not even 2 episodes later she would repay that kindness tenfold and bring Naofumi back from the depths of despair. They saved each other at their lowest moments and that’s just beautiful storytelling to me.
Why does this need explaining, the reason for her affection is self evident to anyone who actually watched it let alone the fact that the MAJORITY of people watching were readers of the Web novel/Light novel &/or the manga anyway.

I ship it for a number of reasons. Chief amongst them being that both Raftalia and Noafumi calm eachothers dark places. If anyone ever has a chance to find someone who can look past their flaws and help them look past their own flaws, then that is a potentially strong relationship in the making. Just my opinion anyway.

The only advice I can give you is that you should work in solving your own issues before thinking of sharing someone else's. I am by no means an extrovert but Im more outgoing than most because it is fun sometimes (even though its exhausting af). Make more friends, experience the good in others, and etc. Its unquestionable that human beings are pieces of shit (me and you included) but it doesnt change the fact that we DO good things as well. Thats what you need to focus on. The fact that people can change.
Also by outgoing I mean just be a good person who makes small talk with strangers, genuinely asking them how there day was instead of doing it because its a social norm. Also dont be a good person because you want to have a gf. Be a good person because its the right thing to do

I am happy somebody brought this up there on YT and for us to have a video that we can recommend.
Here's some more information.
After her parents were killed she was enslaved where spent X amount of time enslaved.
Then she was brought by a freak who physically tortured her for a whole night before reselling her to the slave owner.
There she again spent X amount of time enslaved.
Then she was once again brought by a different freak who subjected her to another whole night of torture then sold her back to the slave owner where she spent X amount of time before gaining a respiratory illness where she only had days to live.....then Naofumi came and brought her.
It's important to know that Naofumi had an legitimate actual mental break down, so much so he had PTSD and could not taste food and every woman he saw triggered the PTSD attacks.
He originally only brought Raphtalia because she was the same sex as Myne and reminded him of Myne and thought the chains would look good on her.
He also believed that every singe adult female would betray him no matter what,which forced Naofumi’s psyche to compartmentalise.
She is female, but she is a slave, therefore, is absolutely unable to betray him, part of Naofumi’s ability to compartmentalise manifested as only seeing Raphtalia as a child NOT an adult female.
That's why Naofumi was mentally broken when Raphtalia got ”freed” his psyche literally shattered because he couldn't handle being abandoned and betrayed again and thought that Raphtalia was happy she was freed from the Rapist.
Naofumi saw Raphtalia as a slave but never best her or treated her badly because he still had his moral code from back home, also Raphtalia was all he could afford she was broken, sick and he fixed her because he needed a weapon, giving her medicine, good food and healing her PTSD was part of that, but during all that due to his compartmentalization he managed to show fragments of his real self that was shattered by the PTSD sense of normalcy, friendship to Raphtalia even though his feelings were ”pretend”.
Except it was all real on both of them no matter that Naofumi convinced himself deep in his mind.
Finally this last bit, it's really, really, really messed up.
Free Demi-humans have no rights whatsoever, only enslaved Demi-humans do.
Enslaved Demi-humans are treated as property and are protected by property laws.
The very reason Myne wanted Raphtalia freed is so she could kill her.

I personally go with the flow when it comes to ships, and this includes Raphtalia and Naofumi. I would think that they would be cute together (And a good ship), But if their relationship is like a father daughter one, I think it would be suuuuuuuuuper adorable and wholesome. By now, Naofumi has a much better life inside that fantasy world compared to real life, which is sad to say the least, but i feel happy for him, even if he was wronged so many times. His sheer ability to bounce back through making slow, methodical moves made me interested in the show, along with the bonds he holds with the people closest. Seeing him turn from that naive naofumi into the total badass you see by the end of season 2, i can't wait for season 3.
I’m pretty sure romance is the last thing on Naofumi’s mind.
He just wants to save the world and to get the fuck out. Hes got family back home.
Fair, though it was one of his initial aspirations before, well you know. Honestly, I think it would make him less jaded to finally have a positive romantic relationship with a woman. He literally needs it so he doesn’t come back looking like a shell shocked vietnam vet.
Kind of surprised that there's actually anyone out there who doesn't see the obvious reasons behind her affections for him. It's pretty blatant, and incredibly on-the-nose:
- He takes care of her.
- He gave her the strength to fight for herself/others.
- He helped her cope with the death of her parents/loved ones.
- He cured her sickness.
- He (essentially) freed her from slavery.
- He gave her a purpose in life.
- He fed/clothed/sheltered her.
- He treated her like a real person, not just a tool...I mean, he did treat her like a tool, but he also treated her like a real person.
- He compliments/rewards her when she completes a task, and even when she fails, as long as she did her best, he still does it.
- He willingly puts his life on the line for her, even once opting to stay and DIE so she could escape.
I legit don't know how much more blatant it needs to be: Despite the fact that, due to the traumatic experiences he's gone through, Naofumi is King Asshole Supreme, Raphtalia sees the good in him, the side of him that was on display for everyone before he was a victim of false allegations. Fuck, if I were gay, I'd marry Naofumi.

It mostly because Naofumi's kindness touches her heart like the other characters. Pity that it takes what happened Atla to drive it home to Naofumi that he should return the feelings of others. But the nice thing is Naofumi really is like a mirror he returns what he is given by others hopefully it will give those watching this an inkling how it goes.
Since volume 2 it's been clear Naofumi loves Raphtalia but Malty's betrayal created aversion to romance. Naofumi's mind initially resolved this internal conflict by interpreting his feelings as parental love which makes sense.
It’s amazing what one false accusation will do to a man not just in the eyes of the crazy ‘believe all women’ mob but also to his personal health and well being…there need to be much harsher consequences for women who lie about such serious accusations imo
I love how during season 1. Naofumi wanted to go back to his world and you can tell he wanted to keep it father-daugther...now that he changed his mind.. And the reason why... I feel like he will stop acting blind toward her feeling. They might even get a talk about it. I remain hopeful since she wanted to kiss him twice after the hot pool episode.. She clearly matured betwen then and the ending... I do think she matured ALOT after she closed the chapter on the previous owner she had..

It's not something that needs a great deal of explanation. Beyond just Naofumi's kindness to her, he's extremely attentive, has a good heart despite his rough exterior, puts her needs before his own, and takes care of her devotedly. Let's not forget he's the shield hero, a legendary figure that her parents told her stories about and she grew up idolizing. He becomes her storybook prince in a way, and while I'm sure he's not exactly what she imagined, it makes sense she'd be so taken with him.
I kinda liked him treating her as a daughter...its a breath of fresh air
Just wanted to say that her feelings got stronger to him from the scean where her best friend said that she wanted to meet the hero and be his wife. Maybe she wants to fufil her friends wishes in her own way but you can see that she wants him no matter what. Idont normally comment on you tube so please bear in mind this is my opinion only

Raphtalia's mental development in the first few volumes is childlike for sure, but she grows. I personally felt like she was a different person during the end of the, let's call it the season 2 arc (at it's full conclusion in volume 9). At that point, it's clear that she's grown up, she's still Raphtalia, she still loves Naofumi, but at this point, there isn't any doubt anymore. She is now a beautiful young woman, and her love is deal.
The fact that demi-humans age by level and not by years like humans means that normal ageing can't be taking into account. Hell, the reason for humans hating demi-humans was the fact that they age so quickly.
