Also (I think only in the second version), they have people over when the cannon first goes off and a banker catches a vase. This means that many things could (and have ) broken before
I love it when the other nannies start flying. No screaming, they seem super calm, it's as if they're all going "oh well. Guess I'm flying away now. Bye Bye"
@plazasta They must have changed their minds at the last minute not wanting the job after hearing Admiral Boom fire the cannon and were looking for a reason to get away from the Banks house and the wind changing helped them to leave.
Typical British character. We generally tend to be stoic and reserved even if wind is blowing us into the air. For an American made film, they got the British mannerisms and character pretty accurate.
According to Julie Andrews, the first time they tried filming Mary Poppins entrance, the wire got stuck and she couldn't get down. Passers by heard Mary Poppins screeching and cursing a blue steak that would make sailors blush.
*One of the funniest scenes in Mary Poppins, without a doubt! **1:49** The way that nanny flies away with the music "bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-bu-buuuu" is just hilarious, because of the way it looks and sounds! Gets me every time, it does! 🤣😁👍☮*
I was four years old the first time I saw Mary Poppins. I'm now 21 and it's still one of my all time favorite movies to this day. Mary Poppins is practically perfect in every way. 😊
I'm 50 now and watching this just for the few minutes made me feel like a kid again in my pjs after having a bath because I'd been playing outdoors all day, chasing bugs, rolling down grassy hills and running under the hose enjoying the hot day. And now I'm waiting for the Disney movie to come on 😁😊
+Patrick Blake That's surprising that Jane said that because she and Michael didn't get to meet them yet not knowing if they were what they advertised for or not. At least they got their wish for them to be gone having the wind blow away those nannies especially since they didn't know that their father tore up their advertisement.
@@yooneeque1 That would definitely be a little hard to know because for example, if Mary Poppins was standing in the crowd with those nannies, and if Jane and Michael looked at her it's unknown if they would think of her as the actual nanny they advertised for which she was. Especially because all those nannies were dressed the same way and Mary Poppins was also dressed the same way as them.
Actually, in the advertisement they specify Cheery disposition, rosy cheeks, sweet and pretty. Well they are clearly NOT that ;D. And yes, some of them are men XDXD
This is one of the only scenes I can clearly remember seeing when I was in the back seat of my parent's car eating a hoagie sandwich wrapped in tin foil at the drive in - in 1964! I was only 4 at the time, but I remember seeing the group of nannies all cloistered together with their umbrellas popping inside out. For years I was obsessed with umbrellas...maybe because they symbolized a vehicle that could lift me up and carry me away from an unhappy place.
Really - I thought it was pretty well done - (other than it being wire work and so moving in that supergirl sort of way) but still well composed - especially the nannies being blown away.
The nanny scene always reminds me and my girlfriend of our visit to London on a wet and very windy day. my girlfriend was struggling with her big umbrella which constantly blew inside out and pull both of us along. we both had to hold on to railings in front of a house while trying to keep hold of the umbrella which was getting blown about like crazy. we remember seeing lots of other people struggling in the wind and their umbrellas blown inside out too. LOL
@Jared Curry He's probably used to the house vibrating and sees everyone has things covered preventing anything from falling and breaking. Plus, the next time after this scene when Admiral Boom fired the cannon, it caused the Banks piano to slide towards George giving him an interest in wanting to play the piano.
How they managed to shot these scenes in 1964 without computer- generated imagery? Just imagine seeing this film in the 60s in black and white television, it must've been a jaw-dropping moment.

I honestly love that the makers didn't obsess over the bit of trash in the street (1:33) that didn't even quiver during the wind. Shows that they focused on what really mattered: music, character, charm, in other words the important elements.
Am I the only one who thinks about The Wizard of Oz when I see this scene? All of the nannies waiting at the Banks' front door get swept away by an unknown wind and here comes this person floating down on an umbrella whom Michael Banks thinks is a witch. One would think that the nannies were swept out by a tornado and taken to the Land of Oz, but tornadoes happen in Nowhere Kansas, not London.
Nice to see two Upstairs Downstairs connections. Karen Dotrice (Jane) played housemaid Lily in Season 5. Hermoine Baddeley (Ellen) is sister to Angela Baddeley who played the cook Mrs Bridges.
He was grown up, but sadly he retired from acting after *The Gnome-Mobile* . He died at 21 years old in '77 from pancreatitis that was caused supposedly from some food poisoning while he was in India. And Dotrice admitted that she regrets not keeping in contact with him before his death.
On looking at the queue of prospective nannies, I detect one or two are (stunt) men. I’m. Curious how many of the flying nannies were stuntmen. The sheer number of stunt flights on screen all at once is a marvel! Someone else in the comments mentioned trash or litter in the streets. Of course, ALL the nannies are either holding copies of the advertisement, and/or letters of recommendation, and/or newspapers, which, I suspect, is by design and merely for the purpose of embellishing the special effect of the strong gust of wind that blows the nannies away. First we see fallen leaves blowing through the group, then umbrellas inverting, then all manner of nannies and advertisements flying away. It’s a beautifully staged & choreographed, comically built, series of stunt flights! I cannot think of a filmed flying sequence that even comes close to the shear number of actors flying at one time - perhaps the scene in The Wizard of Oz, where the flying monkeys swoop down, pick up Dorothy and, fly away! This sequence is pretty spectacular!
That last nanny flying away “spread out” with the trombone playing used to crack me up as a kid, and to my surprise made my daughter laugh too when I showed her this movie about 30 years later!
The nanny flying away “spread out” with the trombone sound always cracked me up as a kid. My daughter laughed at her too when I showed her this movie 27 years after I saw it 😆
@drf81 That might be possible but, the wind arrow changed from West to East so that means the wind changed on it's own and later in the movie Mary Poppins said that she will stay on the job as the nanny until the wind changes and when the wind changed again from East to West was when Mary Poppins packed her things and left (probably to become someone else's nanny) and then came back when hearing and feeling that adult Michael Banks on "Mary Poppins Returns" needs a nanny for his kids while dealing with the problem of losing the house.

@Justin Quigley Maybe the reason they didn't scream from getting blown away because, they changed their minds not wanting the job as a nanny at the banks house after hearing Admiral Boom firing the cannon at 0:57 where they were looking for a reason to be getting away from the Banks house and the wind changing helped them get out of there. However, that one nanny holding onto the Banks fence probably didn't like being blown away and was hoping to walk away.
Why did these kids believe that their dad would run their ad instead of his own? They know that he's a stick in the mud who's forgotten how to have fun.
I love how Mr. Banks just casually accepts the cannon booms twice a day.

However, that one nanny holding onto the Banks fence probably didn't like being blown away and was hoping to walk away.
@@afriendofbean good point
@@justinquigley9739 Thank you. Hopefully they all landed without getting hurt or landed very slowly and gently onto the ground.
Why did these kids believe that their dad would run their ad instead of his own? They know that he's a stick in the mud who's forgotten how to have fun.
It’s hard not to laugh when the nanny’s blow away 😅
@mrjakelong you're welcome! I couldn't believe it wasn't on already! :)
Mary does it so elegantly. How she trolls through them like a boss? As she would quote....I NEVER EXPLAIN ANYTHING!
Where do you think they all got blown away to?
She did on earth.
Chad leia did it in space
Is it the magic of Mary poppins that's making them fly away?
Maybe
