I love the meaning, the kite was broken at the beginning and the father never bothered to fix it, it represented a broken family and at the end it's fixed and the family are spending time with each other. (:
Now THIS is how fatherhood is supposed to be. Taking the simplest of things in life, and yet making them seem greater than all the wealth, and fame, and glory, and power in the world!
I always wondered if Bert character is supposed to represent how we should enjoy the little things in life. Cause even though he doesn't make much money he still has fun doing odd little jobs.
Ok I'm obsessed with Julie Andrews' acting in this. I never really got the subtlety of this as a kid, but the parrot is totally right and she knows it. She loves these children, as she does all the children who come under her care, and she wishes she could stay with all of them. But her stating the facts of the matter is totally correct and that it's time for her, the children, and their father to move on. You can just see all of this happening in Poppins' mind and heart in that little bit and it's so heartbreaking and yet so optimistic. Julie ends her performance with one last bit of dialogue conveying such powerful emotion and hits it out of the park. I can't get enough!!
Broadwaypuppet that’s why they didn’t say good bye. Also, there’s no reason to be jealous of them loving their father more. She should be proud she reconnected them to their father
Exactly, sometimes we try to not let ourselves become emotionally attached to people with whom we have to part some day, eg a foster parent. However, this is often difficult, if not impossible, especially if we have to care for that person. I have been there myself and it is heartbreaking.
I’m always sad when Bert says “don’t stay away too long”. He’s such a kind and positive-thinking person but the way he says that makes me think he feels sad to see her leave and will miss her 😔
Those of us who lived as youth when Walt was still with us: THIS. Sunday evenings when Walt himself just might appear to open his show!!! There is an entire generation out here who patterned their lives trying to emulate that man's onsite vis a vis entertainment; and in the end what joy we experienced in the effort. Such a fortunate generation we were...
One can never forget the last scene where Mary Poppins looks alone and from afar, on the fruits of her labour with such a bittersweet expression. Life imitating art, where the kind and compassionate always seem to be invisible, not only to those they help, but by society in general.
I will agree with you on that and like the comment before me said I never thought of it that way. But you could also think the poppy or whatever flower is placed on Mr. Banks also represents a new begining. After all in the Bank the night before he was disgraced and humiliated. But with the new flower on his jacket, it's a new beging of him as a person as well. He is going to take Bert's advice and be a better father and cherish the small moments he has with his kids, as they won't be little for long.
I also think flying the suffragette was a huge message, to be flying it high in the sky for the whole of London to see... It was one of the main things to happen culturally and politically and I think it's Walt Disneys way of honoring the woman who breathed life into Mary Poppins. That being P.L. Travers and Julie Andrews.. as well as honoring the character herself.
Really? I was gonna say because I was right to assume that his old guy character died in this movie, so I was confused and wondering what he was doing in the Mary poppins returns sequel as the same character from this movie because I thought he passed away ‘laughing’😕😅 But thanks for putting me out of my confusion 😅
I only get to see my little daughter once a year. We flew a kite together last time I saw her. It was a peaceful time and I really tried to stay in the moment. I sang this song to her, and cried.
Walt Disney's self proclaimed masterpiece. And you know what? He's wasn't wrong. Of all the movies he helped make, and hell, a lot of the ones made after he passed, this one's one of the best. It's practically perfect in every way.
Wish George apologized to her for acting to her like a jerk and thanked her and told her how with supercalafrigielistickespiallydioushes showed in the bank them off 😊
When you could watch a movie over and over again without paying remember that? I stayed from 11 am first showing till 7pm at night watch it over and over and over. Julie Andrews was my first female crush when I was 8. My parents knew where I was at.
In the first book, there are some subtle hints that they have a more-than-friends relationship. Of course, Bert has a MUCH more minor role in the books, as does Mr. Banks.
“Romantic lead” aren’t the first words that spring to mind when one thinks of Dick van Dyke - one tends to think of him first as being a funnyman. But DANGED if he doesn’t have insane chemistry with almost any woman he plays opposite. Even if it’s not primarily a romantic story.
That man that played the dad is always so serious and sober in movies. It's refreshing to see him singing and frolicking. That is, it sounded like it might actually be his singing voice. Love this movie.
I'm in graduate school working to become a child psychologist, and I work with kids now as part of my training. I watch them come and go under my care and the care of my supervisors, only to leave when they no longer need us. This scene, and Mary Poppins' demeanor towards the children, really speak to me. Of course I, and everyone I know in the helping professions, do fall in love with the children we care for. But there's a wall there, a professionalism that can't be breached. The kids I work with don't get access to my feelings the way I do to theirs. Which is as it should be- it would be deeply inappropriate to get too sentimental. And when they leave my life for the last time, that's usually it. I never see them again. But the reality is, I do love them. And I'm proud of them when I see them start to succeed and grow. It's very bittersweet when a kid is ready to stop treatment- I'm thrilled they don't need me anymore, but sad to see them go. As a child, I never really understood the hidden depth in this scene. Now it's one of the most profound moments in any film to me.
@@ArcticFalcon I was looking forward to it, but it was a huge disappointment. With Emily and Lin Manuel I expected so much more…but it just lacked the “magic” of its predecessor . Still fun to see Dick Van Dyke though.

Some great musicals in this era Mary Poppins, Oliver!, Bedknobs and Broomsticks and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. All with catchy songs with authenticity of old victorian England, great choreography and direction. Quality filmmaking that seems to have got lost in the digital SFX age.
You just don't get this kind of journey of entertainment these days. Or this kind of unique originality. Most films lose their uniqueness after a while unlike Mary Poppins.
@Amber417 I agree, especially since that was probably Mary Poppins second visit in that neighborhood since the moment she saw Bert she said "it's nice to see you again Bert" where probably Mary Poppins came to that neighborhood in the past to be another kid's nanny.
I remember I used to cry at the end when Mary Poppins left. I wished she could have stayed with them forever. Now I realize she is not meant to stay forever. She has a mission. She is there to make families more connected. Once her work is done she has to leave.

King Edward was on the thrown, and every conceivable investment downtown at the Bank, but the children of the well to do barely had any claim on their parents' time. This is a Masterpiece -- the pinnacle of the 60s era craft at Disney.

This really is just one of the all time great movies. It's so fun, so cleverly written, so well acted by the entire cast. Walt Disney said he thought it was the best movie his studio ever made. Since he died only 2 years later, I like to think of it as his swan song.
I lost a very dear niece aged 21 to a speeding driver who mowed her down and the devastation caused by her death still resonates to this.day. For some silly reason , when I see that kite soar in the sky, I think of her and that her spirit is free to soar too. RIP dear niece, you will never be forgotten.
@samhaigh5355 Well in some ways, Jane and Michael kind of did say goodbye to Mary Poppins when she was packing her things and they were showing off their sadness that she's leaving and when George was calling Jane and Michael she said "run along spit spot" as a way of saying "you said goodbye to me and now it's time for you to see your father." Then when the bird handle of her umbrella said "they care more of their father than you" where she said "that's what it should be" as a way of feeling that she already said goodbye to Jane and Michael. But Bert said it while looking up in the sky.
The very first lyrics make it more meaningful: "with tuppence for paper and strings, you can have your own set of wings." In other words, do something *good* for yourself with that upper-class background of yours.
@evanhalsey1844 Also, R.I.P Matthew Garber as Michael Banks. He was also great on the movie "The Gnome Mobile" as Rodney Winthrop along with Karen Dotrice who played as Jane Banks here on the movie and on "The Gnome Mobile" she was Elizabeth Winthrop.
Love this film! used to watch it so much when I was younger with my Nan, she passed away around 5 years ago, but it always reminds me of her... all the songs are fun and catchy too!
Wait a minute, so Mr Daws Senior dies, and the very next morning, not even 24 hours later, his son and the other members of the board (the last people to see him alive) are all out with smiles on their faces flying kites? His son is practically overjoyed his father's dead, was he secretly waiting for the old man to croak so he could inherit the business? He gave Banks his job back and made him a partner for inadvertently killing the man! Why would he do that? Doesn't this seem just a little suspicious?
His son is overjoyed that his father finally found something to make him happy when nothing else did. The board members would feel the same way. The scene makes perfect sense.
Some have said it was "Anti-Feminist" that Mrs. Banks used her sash at the tail of the kite. I disagree. To me, that sash represents her and what she stands for but she still loves and cherishes her family. The kids and Mr. Banks put themselves into the kite, and with the sash, so did Mrs. Banks.
Brandon Quatro not exactly But surprisingly all filmed in LA/Burbank nothing in London.. I think they used the main studio but also little bit of Disneyland

@@spencerfrankclayton4348 lol realistically she would be. I'm not saying the movie would show that, but seeing as she is grown up lol she would get them every few weeks.
O gosh, pls. Don't ruin my childhood with a sequel I just can't afford to lose it. 😭😭😭
Fangirl Forever yes but PL Travers wrote 5 sequels to Mary Poppins This is really part 2
Also, please worry not, the return is a glowing love letter to this movie :)
By all means, see it. It sure didn't ruin any of my memories of the original.
Me neither
One of the best movies ever made.
my mom, god bless her soul (died of cancer in 05) loved Mary Poppins and this song touches home - it's perfect.
King Edward was on the thrown, and every conceivable investment downtown at the Bank, but the children of the well to do barely had any claim on their parents' time. This is a Masterpiece -- the pinnacle of the 60s era craft at Disney.
i was watching this movie yesterday, and i started crying at this part, it's soo amazing!!
Theirs so many great messages in Mary Poppins. Its beautiful.
I love how you can see it written all over her face......how in fact she has grown to love the children very much
The two cooks both appeared in the series Bewitched. One was Aunt Hagatha
Bob Bennett The other was Elspeth the nanny, right?
My left ear is lonely :(
Will Scarlett same
David Tomlinson looked like a real british gentleman ;)
He is the best actor in the movie. It's sad that he didn't win a oscar ,too ...
Wonderful song . Many thanks to the Sherman Brother's !
I like the way Michael and especially Jane hop up and down while dancing, all throughout this movie.
People in the neighbourhood must think " Oh god, the Banks' are out again "
This was my favorite movie when I was little. Still is. This is also the catchiest and happiest song in the movie. Love it!!!! :-)
This movie is practically perfect in every way
Love It!! Let's all reconnect with the child within us - - - Let's Go Fly A Kite!!! Thanks so much for posting! What a great movie, with a most wonderful soundtrack!
This really is just one of the all time great movies. It's so fun, so cleverly written, so well acted by the entire cast. Walt Disney said he thought it was the best movie his studio ever made. Since he died only 2 years later, I like to think of it as his swan song.
Saving Mr.Banks
I was only 4 when this movie was released in 1964 but I have seen it so many times that all my nieces and nephews still call me “Banks”
In Memory of Glynis Johns
October 5, 1923 - January 4, 2024
Good-bye, Mary Poppins. Don't stay away too long.
84 people who disliked this should go fly a kite!
they probably have never tried to fly a kite and feel so happy watching it soaring up the sky
Rohan Padiyar x the same time as a result of the
Rohan Padiyar 125 actually..haha
Rohan Padiyar you mean 141
Rohan Padiyar
it’s because this guy manage to make the sound only came out from the right ear fgs
You're never too old for Disney. Me and my friends link arms, skip, and sing this at the top of our lungs.....IN HIGHSCHOOL! :D
Julie Andrews is such a beau!!!
I ship Bert and Mary Poppins.
There is a great message to parents of today, so busy. Take time to be a mother and father to your kids because in 18 years, they will be gone!
aahhhhhh conveyed beautifully, let me go to let me grow. mary loved them but they needed eachother even more. Mary helped them see that.
I was a little sad at first, when the children didn't properly say goodbye, but after Bert said goodbye I felt better.
At least Bert said it with a smile.
Shall we talk about how long it took me to figure out where he got that tuppence?
R.I.P. David Tomlinson. You were great in this movie and then later on in "Bedknobs & Broomsticks" as Professor Emelius Brown. You were a star.
A little but change is necessary. And who better than somebody who's familiar with the crowd and competent?
TonesTheGeek l think you’re taking the time line a little too literally!
No because his Dad was miserable and died happy.
His son is overjoyed that his father finally found something to make him happy when nothing else did. The board members would feel the same way. The scene makes perfect sense.
TonesTheGeek He died of happiness and as emotional as it was his son was chuffed to see his beloved Daddy so happy even if it was for a short while Xx
No, It makes her a Timelord, Which Mary Poppins is, think about it.
If she's a Timelord,where's her sonic screwdriver?
My right ear enjoyed this immensely.
Mary Poppins is having a. An absolute voice. Julie Andrews ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Banks.
Patrick's Crazy Place I thought it was genius of her to put the sash on the kite to further advertise the cause.
Well, as a suffragette, she WAS a feminist in a way for that time, 1910.
So this entire classic was filmed indoors on a soundstage?
Brandon Quatro not exactly
But surprisingly all filmed in LA/Burbank nothing in London..
I think they used the main studio but also little bit of Disneyland
I LOVE THIS MOVIE! it has so many wonderful meanings!
I love how Mr. Banks becomes a better person by the end of this. He's so much more likeable that way.
Me too 😊 Wish he would apologize to Mary for being a jerk . And told her how he with supercalafrigilestick washed the jerks off 😅😂😊
