Sham was all heart and guys. Got his head bashed on the starting gate in the Derby, lost a couple of teeth, and still fought on. Would probably still be mentioned with the greats if he were foaled in any other year than 70.
No mention of Riva Ridge for the 72 Derby Win, and he ran pole to pole. Skipped right over to talk about Secretariat in 73.. WTF really. I wonder what he would have done if Hurricane Camille didn't damage him for life when he was a infant. He would have been a triple crown winner if it hadn't rained at the Preakness. He never would run in the rain. Long live Riva Ridge... I will remember you always... Love you forever Riva

Horse racing is all about money in the long run. Churchill Downs closes down every competing race course it’s ever bought. Including recently what used to be the greatest race track in America Arlington Park. Save your money and boycott horse racing CDI is all about Greed in the long run
Arlington was certainly lovely. Churchill (mostly due to Barnumesque blowhard Matt Winn) has become far too overblown for the true value of this single race. Nobody thought it was THAT big a deal until mid ‘20s. Then so big a deal that the whole track became uberalles important. Yet honestly it doesn’t compare to Saratoga either before or after the Matt Winn promotion. Indeed you may have a point. Too big for its britches and shutting everything down as its competition.
Partly because it wasn’t as important. Was only becoming really important at that point. But it is a myth that it was always the greatest race. Actually a myth now. Restricted to 3yo, and further, early in that year.
@@HarbingerOfBattleno question. No horse had even the simultaneous American time records he had. 5 simultaneously at the end of 3yo. And turns out his Saratoga track record (equal to Sir Barton 3 weeks prior) probably should have been the 6th were it not for that travesty of “American record” of the Suburban Handicap by Whisk Broom II. MOW was truly unprecedented.
Yes, the Derby was a thing when War Admiral and Seabiscuit were racing. War Admiral was a Triple Crown winner so he DID run in the Kentucky Derby. His father Man O’War did not run in the Derby because his owner, Samuel Riddle, didn’t want him to run a mile and a quarter so early in his 3 year old season. Back in 1921, the Triple Crown as we know it wasn’t a thing amongst horsemen so Riddle considered it of no consequence to skip the Derby. Seabiscuit was not a good racer at 2 and 3 years old because his owner and trainer hadn’t figured out how to properly motivate him. Only after he was sold to C.S. Howard and put in the care of Tom Smith that they figured out how to train and handle him so that he became a great handicap and stakes winner.
Man o War didn't run but War admiral did man of war's owner had pride and failed to field him. Sea biscuit was a poor runner and lost the races leading it to the kentucky. Therefore it was War admiral's year
