Dan patch and Mission Brief were faster for their era and the both of them were better bred especially Mission Brief with the entire lineage all world champions all the way back to Ima Lula. Remember they never took Mission Brief to the Red Mile for a time trial. She jogged in a 1:50.3 at The Red Mile as a two year old October 2nd 2013 a record that will outlast any of Secretariat's records. Secretariat never achieved the moniker "the freak of nature" like Mission Brief.

+STANLEY PARANORMAL I feel this would be unfair to owners, who want their horses trained by the best. And the 10% of the purse that goes to a trainer isn't a huge cut, although I realize it's a lot of money when it comes to stakes races. Aside from these issues, unless the best-qualified horses - regardless of their connections - are entered in a race, its results would always be subject to debate.

Racing has lost it's shine to the American public. Crowds are down and track owners trying to get faster times have made the surfaces dangerous to the delicate limbs of today's thoroughbreds. In my opinion, these horses who missed the Triple Crown should have won it: Alysheba, Sunday Silence, Silver Charm, Real Quiet, Smarty Jones, and Big Brown. In the case of the latter two horses, the Belmont marked their only career losses. Real Quiet was only four inches away. Silver Charm had everything he needed. +Amanda Kelly While I acknowledge the agony of three and a half decades (waited 18 years myself, since really learning what the Triple Crown was during Silver Charm's attempt), I question calling it a curse. I say they've let the breed weaken, with all the focus on fractious speed, and that made the Triple Crown that much harder to achieve, similar to England's. On a happier note, a horse came close to winning England's Triple Crown a few years ago, so it can also still be done, if good enough.

The Wednesday before the 1981 Belmont, I called into CNN and asked John Campo (who lost 45 horses in a barn fire soon after) if he was worried that a horse like Summing could steal the race. "Never been done," he said. I picked Summing at 7-1 but wound up not betting him, as the night before the Belmont I hit the OTB late double at Yonkers with a 2-1 and 14-1 shot who paid $310.

Sir Barton was not a Triple Crown winner because it was not the Triple Crown when he won it. Risen Star was robbed in the Belmont. Sunday Silence And Easy Goer robbed each other. The connections of one of them should have paid any price to buy the other out of contention. In 1989, I took a $20 cold exacta on the second choice over the favorite and hit all three races.

It makes me sad that all people talk about is Secretariat...
There were so many great, amazing, spirited horses out there that
people just forget about and don't care. Like Genuine Risk 1980. She won the Kentucky
Derby...when it came to the Preakness though, Codex jockey hit her in the face on
purpose around the turn, causing the poor girl to come in second.
She also came in second in the Belmont, best a filly has ever done. But why don't
we talk about that? Why don't we talk about the fact the Ruffian was undefeated and
broke her leg in the match race between her and Foolish Pleasure? Why not?
Why don't we chat about Afleet Alex in 2005, who won both the Preakness and Belmont.
He was running for a sweet little girl who died from cancer. But why don't we talk about
it? What about Zenyatta, the TRUE come-from-behind horse. The one who would've won
against BLAME if she would've went sooner? And the fact that she won 19 of her 20
races??? Why not??? And there are soooooo many other precious horses who people
don't talk about, it's truly sad...but it's all because Secretariat won the TC...like 12 other
amazing horses did...it's because ONE time he won by 31-lengths...it's because
some chestnut horse 'surprised' everyone. And let me tell you something, EVERY SINGLE
horse on this earth was made by God...he hand-crafted each one. So every one is special...
everyone has a beauty to the...a spirit...
And even Secretariat's jockey once said, "As God is my witness, she may be better than
Secretariat." He was talking about Ruffian...a filly. Remember that next time.

It's the nature of sports. In baseball don't all the other teams angle after last year's World Series winners? In the NFL the aim is to keep the Super Bowl champs from winning back to back championships, it's no different for horse racing, be the horse that history will remember for stopping the current bid for the triple.
