    Moral to the story :
    1. Don’t buy your under age child a gun.
    2. If your child needs mental health attention of any kind get them the help they need.
    3. If you’re not willing to put in the work as a parent don’t have children .
This is such a tragic case, so many people failed this young boy, most importantly his own parents .

I found it interesting that the Dean of the school said that guns in their area are so common that they have to remind their students not to wear their hunting gear to school and that they have students that take pictures in their homecoming attire posing with guns. He was basically saying a picture of a gun is maybe not as alarming as one might think because of how common they are in that area. I never even considered this theory, I live in CA and perhaps that drawing would be more alarming here than in other states. One of the school employees explained during testimony that the law requires them to have probably cause to search a student backpack. If the parents had mentioned that he had access to guns at home that would have given the school an "in" to search that backpack. Because the parents withheld crucial information from the school the school's hands were tied as far as what they could do. The drawing showed only one person shot and the words "Help me" which made them think he had suicidal ideation, not that he was a danger to anyone else. If the drawing showed multiple people "down", that would have given the school more cause to think he could be a danger to others.
This is a community where, during hunting season, school starts late on Wednesdays and high schoolers go hunting in the morning before school. So, a certain amount of interest in guns is baked into their psyche and not considered to be alarming. It was testified that some of them get dressed up in their prom clothes and just have to have a photo taken of them holding their guns dressed in prom clothing. Guns are normal for much of this country, and Michigan is a huge gun toting place. Doesn't mean they are all dangerous. In fact, it can make it more difficult to figure out if someone actually is dangerous. Schools are loathe to jump the gun, so to speak, because most are not dangerous to themselves or others. But the parents knew in this case that their son had serious mental health issues. And they bought him a gun instead of taking him to a mental health counselor.

The counsellor told the parents that the school would check that they had taken him to the psychologist and they gave them a time frame for that to occur. That would have also been pressure for the parents to act. If things hadn’t gone so catastrophically wrong before that could have been arranged, or if they had taken him that day as requested by the school, things might have been different. So it appears the prosecution are successfully making their case right now with the defence unable to plug the glaring holes.

If you care about your child you would have already had them receiving help,, but you are more concerned with yourself and others perception of you. This is happening all over the world. As for OHS, there's blame both ways, because there's fault both ways.
The counselor originally said to take the shooter for a psych eval IMMEDIATELY. We know in hindsight his instinct was correct. When the donors refused citing work demands, the counselor should've called CPS IMMEDIATELY. He didn't. What made him think they had 48 hours to play with? Too bad the school is immune from prosecution.
