That is such a smart build Simon. Thank you for the invite to come and see it in person, it really is a thing of beauty. So well built you could AirBnB it lol. Nice image as well mate. Clear skies mate
Thanks Glenn, I’m sure your new obsey will knock spots off mine mate🤣 Thanks again for your help with the PC Glenn, it seems to be working fine at the moment 👍 Clear skies mate
Great Build, I have watched all 6 videos, what excellent craftsmanship, and a superb design, with loads of attention to detail, I assume you are in the building trade…look forward to seeing the superb images you have, and will be producing….👏🏻👏🏻
Simon, as I have mentioned before watching a professional working is a joy when it comes to projects such as your observatory. I have watched with enthusiasm all the videos so far and to see your project coming to fruition is a real treat. Really love the quality of the build and should serve you well for many a year. Thanks for sharing with us all. (p.s. still not had any clear skies in North Lincs since the last time I wrote, so frustrating!)
Oh Simon, Glenn is going to be very fortunate to have you help him with his build. Top notch grade A stuff. The Floor fit like a glove and such a great build. Lovely images as well.
Hey thanks Jason! Yeah that floor was a bit of luck🤣 It’s almost done now, just got to get Nina running, Glenn will have to help me with that! All I need now are some Alpha Scorpio skies😀 clear skies mate!
Top looking job Simon with those seals and that insulation. Probably one of the best Obsy's I've ever seen !!! I really need to change the cigarette lighter connections on my mount too. Lovely image there.
Hey thanks Ollie, don’t say it too loud mate, the wife might stick my bed out there🤣 I’d been meaning to change that cigarette lighter end for ages! Just do it mate👍 Clear skies!
Once again, great video, great observatory. When I pull wire I always accompany it with a string so I can pull another in the future. Can hardly wait for the next instalment, you two are like the two old guys from the muppets, very entertaining lol. 10 minute subs, wow, fantastic ending image, we haven’t had a clean night here since mid November 😢
Hey thanks Woody, Lol mate, I love the muppets 🤣I’ll tell Glenn, he’ll laugh 😀 Yeah can’t warp use the obsey properly now, get stuck into a project! Sorry to hear you’ve not a clear night since Nov, hope you get some clear skies soon mate! Thanks again and clear skies!
Thanks Gaz Za You make a good point about the fuse! Although I’m not too worried as the 12 volt power supply is regulated from the Navada power pack! 🤞 Clear skies!
Another interesting part of your observatory build Simon! It's so cool to see all the details.. If I would at some time in the future may build my own I will definitely use your videos as a template. 2:55 Oh man...first I was shocked when I saw this..I thought it will directly hit the roof.. SO closely touching.. 😄But you solved it perfectly. Beautiful final image! 👍🏼 cs mate
Thanks Tully, so glad you liked the video 😀 Hopefully one day you will build your own obsey, if I can help just ask mate👍 It was close, but ok!! Just🤣 Thanks again and clear skies!
Amazing build Simon! You should maybe look into the cable management of your rig, at 16:11 when you are parking the scpe the power and sub cable are dangerously close to the adjustment knob! Looking forward to more videos!
Thanks Daniel, those two leads are a bit close, I will shorten them a bit, I’ve not had a problem yet though! Must be luck🤣 Plenty more videos to come, just completed another rig build (Askar FRA400) that video will be out soon. You’ll be impressed with the cable management on that one😀 Clear Skies!
Hey Simon....another great video bud. Very jealous of the observatory. And I like the font you use. I use them in my videos as well. Keep the videos coming bud.
Hey there AstroEverett; thanks so much mate👍 Yeah the obsey will be a huge bonus for me when it’s fully operational with Nina, as I plan to remote in. Pity it’s not ready now as I’m currently on holiday in Thailand 😀 As for the fonts, I can never really make up my mind which one I like best🤣 but this one’s ok! Thanks for watching mate and clear skies!
Hi Simon fantastic set of videos on how to build your own observatory. It has given me the incentive to have a go at building one. May I ask what height did you build your walls at please. Thanks for sharing - clear skies.
Hi James, thanks so much, really glad to have inspired you to build your own observatory, any questions you have, just please ask! I’ve just popped out to check the heights as I couldn’t remember 🤣 The side walls are 1800mm the end wall as are 2050mm and the height of the pier to the top of the adapter for the EQ6 is 1200mm. Hope that helps👍 Clear skies!
New sub here Simon. Just binged all obsy build videos got that envy again. After watching Glenn’s build the YT algorithm clearly pointed me your way. This is a great job I should have been a builder! Where did you get the exterior cladding part the nice blue bits? I reckon I could persuade my wife if it’s a nice colour like this 🙌
Thanks Simon, much appreciated 👍The cladding is a cement based board made by ‘Hardie Plank’ there are other makes, but this one is a good one! The colour is called Light Mist. Hope your wife goes for it, if you do go ahead with your own build, any questions, just ask😀 Thanks again and clear skies!
Great series of videos to follow for anyone building their own obsy. Floor looks snug and warm. One question - are you planning on painting the walls or will they remain with the wood finish. The reason I ask is because I had my walls initially just as the plywood but soon found the nights of heavy dew were leading to mold growth so I ended up treating the walls for the mold and painting them with an outdoor paint. GFreat image of the Spider and Fly too.
Thanks Logan👍 Much appreciated! I’ve already ordered the paint 😀 I got bathroom paint (moisture resistant) blue, by the way! Although it will have to wait a couple of weeks as I’m now off to the airport, got a 12hr flight to Thailand! Someone’s got to do it😎 Thanks again and clear skies!
You are making me want to build a observatory! I just don't think it would work well on my property layout. Where do you find your music for your videos?
Loving this build video, and that if anything gets in the way of the observatory it gets removed (brick) or pruned (tree)!!! Quick question, why do you need to insulate the observatory, will it not be very cold once the roof is open?
Hi Marc, thanks mate👍 The reason I’ve insulted the Observatory is not for when it’s open, but in those long hot summer days where my other shed gets up to around 100 degrees! The insulation will help to keep it cool in the summer and warmer in the winter! I’m trying to maintain an even temperature all round when not it use! Cher Marc. Clear skies!
Hey Chris, thanks mate! Yes, I’m gonna paint the pier and the walls! I’ve ordered the paint, the walls will be blue, not sure of the pier colour yet! You’ll just have to watch the next vid to find out🤣🤣 Thanks again and clear skies!
Hi Simon, another question about your ror motor. Could you tell me the dimensions of the motor as the obs i built is only 2mx2m and think the length of the motor same as yours might be too long so might have to go one size down. Thanks again.
Watched all 6 of your obsy build videos. Brilliant. Have been in touch with Glenn, who has been very helpful also. Building my own now which will follow both of your designs. Just a question or two if you dont mind. I'm going to re-use a garden shed I have got. It's 5' X 7'. Is that big enough to build a concrete pillar in the middle of to allow an EQ6 + Horizon 102 and a Quattro 200P to park / home and meridian change? I am using a 250mm steel tube like Glenn, and I'm assuming about 1.1m height above the obsy base to the adaptor is enough? Obsy base is wooden shed base, is thet OK or should it be concrete? I note that both you and Glenn have surrounded the pillar with plastic sheet, insulation and then more plasdtic sheet to exclude vibration. Will that be OK for a wooden floor?
Hi Jeremy, thanks so much for watching my videos😀, I hope they helped! On the questions, 5’ to be fair will be tight! Mine is 7x8 feet internally and with my esprit 120, I can only just squeeze past the sides! You may be ok so long as you don’t put a too big a scope on, but don’t forget adding flattners, filter wheel’s, and a camera on the end, makes the imaging train quite long! A wooden floor will be fine for your base, but the important thing to remember is, no part of the floor should touch the pier or ire foundation, That’s why we both insulated the pier foundation from the concrete floor, so as not to transfer any vibrations up to the camera! Concrete is a very good conductor of vibrations! I hope that’s helps, anymore questions, please ask, and finally, good luck without build 👍 Clear skies!
Hi Simon, Thanks so much for your reply! Just another couple of questions if you don't mind. First, where did your electric role off roof equipment come from, and how much was it? And second, how high off the base of the observatory should the concrete column be, up to the base of the adaptor for an EQ6 mount? I'm thinking 1.1m. If you want to reply privately, then please message me and let me reply accordingly! Thanks Jeremy
Job well done

Looking good !, I might be over cautious but I'd put a fuse on the cable as you've removed one when you cut off the ciggy lighter 🙂
Thanks Gaz Za
You make a good point about the fuse! Although I’m not too worried as the 12 volt power supply is regulated from the Navada power pack! 🤞 Clear skies!
