    The Captor X is the choice for me. The size of the thing compared to what it does is insane. I would consider taking the Captor X to a gig, where as i see the OX Box only as a studio thing! Either way, both the OX and the Captor X is amazing products, and they both shine at what they do!

      i agree, the ox is so warm and real life like. i'd still like to see if the captor could be tweeked to sound warmer, there's lots to work with inside it. but, the captor does cut, for live use, probably more usable. and that's my main desire is to find the best live unit.

    • @berndkiltz
      @berndkiltz 3 роки тому +4

      @@MRxr400 I now had both devices and checked them out thoroughly. You can make the Captor sound as good as the ox, if you are using 3rd party IRs and NOT the internal stuff. I use packs from valhallir.at and if you take your time it is really worth it. I also compared to a Boss Wazaa TAE and it does not stand a chance.
      But my setup now is a captor (no x) and I am doing the IRs in the Torpedo plugin or the IR loader in Ableton live. The Captor is analog, so I have one less AD/DA Conversion.
      Damn it, I would get the OX again for ease of use if the wifi connection was stable...

    • @berndkiltz

      Don’t forget… the Ox is now almost “3 times” the cost of the Captor X.
      But, is it “3 times” better ? My personal opinion = no.
      And captor is built like a brick and seems gig worthy. The Ox, gets a big no.
      I’ve had the Ox and weighed the options. In a mix you’d be extremely sensitive to hear much difference at all, and that was the biggest difference too me, along with the features, price, etc. the Captor wins on all counts in my book and sits on y recording desk waiting to do it’s thing whenever I need stellar tones for a song.
      For me, it’s almost perfect.
      Best! ✌🏼

    The OX €1399,00 the Captor X €519,00 then the choice is quickly made, especially when you hear the differences. In my opinion, you only use the OX in the studio, you use the Captor in the studio and live, the Captor much more handy and the Twins sound absolutely great. And the fact that you can also use the Captor X software on your iPhone is a must. If you see the price difference, then you really don't have to think about it for long, for me the Captor X is absolutely great and for me the number one!!!

      @@KrisBarocsi thankssss!! I try again with m’y question... I would have a question: if I don’t need to record myself or produce songs...but I just want to obtain the best tone from my tube amps via the OX or the X...can I avoid using sound board...pc...studio monitor and use for home playing and small venue gigs a configuration like that?
      tube amp head into captor X (or OX) into a PA speaker? if so...would the result be as good as what I am listening in your video? at any volume I guess?

    • @KrisBarocsi
      @KrisBarocsi  3 роки тому +1

      Hey, unfortunately I have zero experience with PA speakers. It will work for sure but I can't tell you which of them will sound any good for guitar. To be honest, good sounding small active PA speakers will cost you at least as much as for example the Presonus Eris 5 studio monitors. These sound fantastic, don't cost a lot and you don't really need an audio interface for them if you don't want to record yourself. Just plug the OX / Captor X straight into the Eris 5 monitors with the fitting cable and set the volume as you like. For more comfort you can put a tiny Behringer mixer between the OX and the speakers. But you don't necessarily need that. You only need a cell phone / ipad / computer to tweak the chosen load box.
      If you prefer having a small PA system I'm sure you'll find infos in forums, written by players with experience. As told, I can't help you with that, sorry.

No brainer for me to choose the Captor X for my second load box/cab sim/etc. At twice the price, the Ox is maybe a tiny bit warmer as said below? I don't really hear it. Personally, it's one of those micro differences I won't miss...gotten lot's of compliments on tone with the Torpedo Live...assuming the Captor X is pretty much the same tech if not better.

    Very nice demo!
    Could you provide us with a general idea of your setup? Are you using your studio monitors for playback?
    Are we able to change room, reverb, and other parameters through your amps cab too, or is it all through your playback system, monitors, etc.
    I actually have a Captor X, but I’ve yet to spend hardly anytime with it yet. I got as far as loading the apps on my iPad for control and registered and setup apps on my Mac.
    I won’t be home for another week and Ihave so many questions that the manual doesn’t really cover that well…
    I guess I’ll figure it out, but I was sure hoping you could provide some info on your gear setup and your workflow?

    Great video and presentation of both units. Been doing research on the Ox for awhile now and all indications are the attenuator function is probably it's worst feature (in terms of how it degrades the sound).
    For someone looking to get into semi-professional home studio production, can I assume the Ox has a bit more bite in that area where the Captor X is a more overall better bang for the buck in terms of picking up the guitar and jamming ?

    I've found the cabs that come with the Captor X are either very harsh/spikey or dull. I've added the Orange, Laney and Victory cabs from two-notes store and it's soooo much better than the built in ones. Fits nicely with your Mac/PC analogy in that you can get it to sound good but it takes a bit of tweaking, very much like a PC. Also what you mentioned about the splitting the mics on the OX, you can set the captor X to dual mono and do the same thing.

    Hello Kris.. very nice video.. I'm very interested in a device with IR built-in to use it with headphones at home to study... I've understood that you really enjoy the captor X for headphones sound quality.. but what do you think comparing Captor X and Suhr reactive load IR? I've seen that almost all comments to this video are focused on IR simulation quality (but you've clarified many times that better IR could be purchased or 'tuned' for every labeled device..) while in my opinion the most relevant behavior is the 'dynamic response' of a loadbox simulating real speakers.. sensitivity to musician touch.. something that we can't listen by demos but it's something that you can feel under your fingers when play guitar and listen by ears while using the device. In my opinion I would to buy the best 'realistic' device under fingers (not the best sounding in terms of frequencies.. because that could be tuned) and the best device listening it by headphones. Thank you very much! 🙏

    My conclusion after watching several comparisons of these devices: The OX sounds warm and analogue, just right. The Captor X on the other hand artificial, harsh and fuzzy (just listen to the comparison starting at 18:02 ) . And that's all that counts, at least for me.

    I owned the X and the Ox.. Sold both and now want the Ox back.
    The Ox is Super Simple to use. If you wanna spend less time messing with settings and eqs and all that, The OX is perfect. The Ox to me, Sounded more natural and warm. The attenuator wasnt that great on the OX but it worked. Just so many good, easy, warm sounding features on the OX.
    So why did i sell it? because i was a idiot and believing all the hype about these Two Notes products. So i buy a Captor X.
    The X just seemed like i was playing with EQs and settings more than playing. It was hard to make it sound "natural" with higher gain rock tones, The attenuator didnt really offer much but it did work. I like the smaller foot print BUT no on/off switch? so you have to unplug it when not in use which is annoying.
    The X may have a TON more cabs but who really needs all them cabs? I would take 5 great sounding cabs over 100 crappy sounding cabs any day.

      I absolutely agree with you on the OX being absolutely fantastic. About the Captor X though... These cab simulator load boxes will always sound as good as the simulations are. The stock cabs in the Captor X are really not bad but you have to tweak them. I just got a Victory Copper 2x12 simulation for my Captor and I stopped tweaking it. That’s always a good sign. Haha! Now I’m at a point were it’s pretty much impossible to tell the difference between the OX and the Captor X (with this Victory cab sim).
      As a last point: I agree (again) that the OX will make you tweak less right “out of the box “. That’s a legit argument. But it has to be said: you can get to the same result with something like the Captor too. Cheers

    If you want to do Twin Tracker, record two channels in mono, then go to the timeline and move one of them 2ms or so and it will do the job :) Also, to my hears, the Ox is by far superior sonically. it built for studio work. also the reverb on the Ox is ridiculous. I have the Ox and I have IRs. Ox behave differently on each speaker set. saying that, there is no bad sound. it's all about the mix. For me, I'd take the Ox but only for studio work. If its for a gig (Ox dont have XLR out??? dont bother live unless you do optical which you won't on a stage), Boss Waza Tube Expander. If I am on a budget then most definitely the Captor X. overall price to features to performance then of course the Captor X. the Captor X is not bad sounding, just need EQ work, I just like the way the Ox behave with amps.

    After listening with headphones during your sound comparison around the 18min mark, I was quite surprised by your comment you don’t think there’s any real difference in sound quality. Maybe it’s just the way it comes across on UA-cam, but in my headphones and to my ears there’s a considerable difference. OX sounds far more natural in the comparison clips to me. So much so, I was instantly turned off the Captor X 🤷‍♂️ Thanks for the great content again Kris 👍

      DJ T Hey, nice to hear from you, good to know you’re doing well. Congrats on your Wilson Tele. :)
      It’s important to say, that these two (OX and CaptorX) sound as good as the cab sim is. I‘ve spent weeks and weeks with tweaking the OX until I was happy with this one preset. It’s now as good as it can get for me. I only had a few hours with the Captor X and these are the basic cabs that are unlocked if you buy the unit. They are really nice but surely not the best you can get. Since then I have their new Victory cab simulations and man... the Copper 2x12 closed back simulation is a whole different story. 😁

      Kris Barocsi Ok gottcha thanks. Have you also had any GOOD experience with just basic reactive load attenuators. I know the ToneKing amps work well (iron man atten.) as I have an Imperial mkii and Sky King. If you have tried some, did you find anyone is better than another for retaining an amps character and edge of breakup at attenuated volumes? I’m wondering what the best option might be for basic attenuation between a head like Friedman Small Box and cabinet.

  • @nudsh
    @nudsh 3 роки тому

    The evaluation is a pretty simple one. The OX is a studio workhorse for multi-tracking and has a bit more refined, built in (and proprietary) cab models where the Torpedo X is for the everyday musician with tube amps that needs decent cab options oob, an IR loader, a really good headphone practice option, DI out and some attenuation both at home and at gigs. The OX price will hopefully be offset by paying studio work where the X is an investment for a working musician to be flexible anywhere they play. For those that say "this one sounds better, more natural, etc" listen to Pete Thorn demo anything. He proves that even decent gear can sound incredible with the right approach and some time tuning it all out.

      Hey, you really shouldn’t do that. Sorry to say this but you might have to swap that Captor X. If you mismatch the impedance you can damage your gear and it won’t even sound right. It’s really important to pay attention to this. Good luck mate!

    They need to make the OX 2.0 1/4 of the size of this one. It’s just way too big, even with a rack to haul around. Nice review, after watching many other videos of the OX, lots of users talk about how the OX get disconnected all the time from the wifi forcing you to shut down the app, switching off and on the device. That’s a pain in the a** and really cut the flow and the working process. While the Captor X with the bluetooth system is way more stable. So, is true that the OX sounds better, warmer and more real. But in the other hand, having connection problems and being the double of the price, are not small details.
    I’d like the Captor X sounds better and has a more 3D reverbs like the OX, because it’s smaller and costs half of the price (just to have the best of both worlds hahahaha)
    Maybe for a professional musician, OX is better, I think for a person who likes to enjoy playing guitar at home, wants to record the ideas and play with cool features for a good price, Captor X is the choice.
    Is just my opinion!

    Based on this video, the Ox Box has better or at least wider stereo field, which puts you more into the scene. Apart from that, the Captor X just has more options and flexibility. Maybe Two Notes can improve the algorithms still, or maybe the device just doesn't have the computing power for those Ox Box reverbs.

    I was surprised by the comments in the video regarding the "sound in the room" during the attenuation section. The Captor may preserve the "presence" but sounds MUCH smaller on the youtube playback, further away from the original sound - especially noticeable at 20 dB attenuation.

    • @KrisBarocsi
      @KrisBarocsi  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Matt, that has a reason: the OX doesn’t offer an equally loud attenuation setting so I had the choice of setting it way more quiet or a little bit louder than the Captor on it’s -20db setting.
      Fact is, the OX really takes away most of the clarity of the guitar tone and the Captor doesn’t. Which makes the attenuated sound of the Captor way more enjoyable and true to the original tone. Does that help? I hope. :)
