Two Notes Torpedo Captor X Review - Attenuator, Reactive Load Box, IR's and More!

- This is my review of the Two Notes Captor X Reactive Loadbox and Power Attenuator. The Two-Notes Captor X is the latest version of the legendary "Torpedo Live" that I showcased many years ago on the channel.
The Two Notes Torpedo Captor X is an all-in-one recording solution and amplifier power attenuation device. Furthermore, you can import third-party speaker Impulse Responses to capture an accurate representation of your amplifier or cabinet speaker.
In this video, I am showcasing the features and benefits of the Two Notes Captor X and also showcasing the tones through a Fender and Marshall amplifier.
The Two Notes Torpedo Captor X can function with any 8-ohm amplifier that allows the speaker to be disconnected.
Two Notes has recently released the Captor X as an upgrade or ‘sidestep’ from their legendary Torpedo Live which I have been using since 2015.

A lot of functionality for a great price!!! I’ve always thought I needed the Universal Audio Ox Box for my Marshall, but at $1300 it’s a hard sale especially since I would mainly use it for attenuation. Not exactly in need of the Captor X but when I do start recording, this the gear I’m leaning towards. Again, great demo tracks Shane!! Cheers!🎸🎸👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
My half stack only has two volumes. Off or... blast out your eardrums. My room faces a busy highway, so all good. 🤘😆
Thanks, Shane. A lot of info in there, and it looks to be a very useful unit.
Awesome video. Definitely picking up one of these soon.
Great video Shane. It’s a serious game changer!
Well done Brother! That's a Great piece of gear and demonstration!
Thanks for sharing Shane!
Be Well All!
Thank you Jason for allowing Shane to review this product, because I just purchased it.
Hey Mike, Jason here - you're welcome and most importantly - THANK YOU!!!!
Good God, that tone you got on the intro track is amazing!
Thanks, Johnny M! :)
This was great Shane. Thanks for that
Very useful, got one myself. Need to do some tweaking, but once you find a good cab/mic combo it feels really alive. Enjoyed the video Shane!
Great review ! Thanks Shane
I own it. I friggin love it. A must for a tube amp in studio
Another great video
Thanks Shane
I love my Captor X! I dont think ill ever do a video or a recording without it! Unless its a microphone im reviewing of course haha. Great video Shane! ❤️
great video! very helpful
Thanks Shane!
I run a Cab m+ straight into my interface. The preamp is awesome.
Two notes do some awesome stuff
Cab M can use an app via Bluetooth. Noise Gate new feature was an ingenious idea
@@johnnymegabyte Thanks dude! The Captor X is controllable via BlutTooth as well on phones and tablets!
Loved the video Shane. Thank you. Helped make up my mind about this or the OX. For the money and ease. CAPTOR x wins. Cheers
Awesome and great demo...BTW what is that gear above Torpedo Live, mic preamp which brand?
The one thing that bugs me about both the Captor X and Torpedo is the DB reduction options for attenuation are all way too much. Minus 38db? So you basically want to crank a 100w head and attenuate it so you can play with a baby in the next room? Ok thats fine, but having a -5db or -10db option would be so useful for all the situations where you want to get your amp nice and “working” but with the volume tamed a bit.
Hi Shane! If you could only have one, would you choke a tube amp + Captor X, or the Fender Tonemaster? Would be used for recording/gigs
Hi, Shane! We recently got the Hotone Ampero in the mail. (original with four switches). Bought it after watching a lot of demos including yours. We've been using it to record Electric, Acoustic, and Bass guitar on our songs as well as keyboards. Really love it and especially love the computer software for control.
We really would love something comparable for recording Micah's vocals better. We are using everything through the Ampeo to a Mac using Logic Pro for recording. What are your recommendations for a budget microphone interface? We have the behringer U-Phoria UM2, but the mic actually sounds better directly into the computer with USB.
It could be the microphone. If you are using a dynamic mic into the Behringer sometimes they don't sound too good going in dry. A condenser mic would probably fix that but if you are talking about it from an effects point of view see if the software can add some compression and reverb/delay, for example.
@@intheblues Thanks, Shane! One of my favorite things about the Ampero I haven't seen anybody talk about is that you can record two separate lines from the USB at the same time. With with the effects and amp models and a second with the dry signal that you can manipulate later.
Dude! You got a neon light sitting on that Marshall. You will get hum for days with that...neon beer
lights are notorious in bar rooms.
Great video! I’ve been wanting one of these for a while but my ac15 is a hardwire connection time the speaker how easy it it to change it to a jack or would you recommend finding a tech?
Price wise that unit sounds great, I wonder how this one compares to the Two Notes Studio at over twice the price?
Just watched it again. I got the torpedo live since 2013. I was wondering if an update makes sense. Now, I was also reading your thoughts on that on your website, but... the only thing I can think of is that the use of 200ms IRs in the Captor X. But. Would I hear it...? Thanks for doing all this.
Where's the link for the gadget you described for using this with a combo amp?
Thanks a lot! Is it true, that for attenuation you don’t need to plug it in to the power socket?
This is way over my head technically but I really enjoyed the video.
Hi mate, I understand what you mean but if you can afford one just get it.
Without a doubt THE best bit of guitar hardware EVER!
I have a Kemper and various other gear, got one of these, use it with a Laney LC50, my ears are over the moon.
So easy to set up, the initial pre programmed settings are a bit naff but it took me 20 minutes to get this rocking.
No messing with mics or room problems, just a great sound that reacts to your playing, best bit of gear I have ever bought.
@@derfsanderson Hi, I have the Kemper and I find it pretty good, but I seem to spend way too much time messing with it to get a sound.
The Two Notes, I plug my Laney LC 50 into it and straight away your on to good tone.
Same thing with my Dark Terror and other amps.
There is some setting up to get your tone, but it's much quicker and sounds great.
Hope this helps
That low setting is quieter than I am.
Hello from Canberra. I just got one from Reverb to tame my MB Mark V
Is the virtual studio software meant to replace the need for general purpose reverb in the amp or from a pedal?
Do you actually have an Impulse Response named Swamp thing or is it some other IR that you tweaked and renamed? I love how it sounds with that cab. Great playing and demo!
Great video mate!
Can you download/install IR’s and use them thru your interface only (no DAW/no WoS?
You will need to use the Torpedo Remote app to load it into the Captor X, but you can install that App on your cell phone or on your computer.
The price of these in NZ is eye watering compared to the old captor!
Globally they are around twice the price of the old Captor, this does SO much more :)
Do you also run the audio through your two notes on the live streams?
When using headphones do you use them straight out of the unit or out of the audio interface/computer?
Hi Shane , I have a Two Rock Studio Signature with a TR 8ohm speaker , here the stupid question , which one should I get captor x 8 or 16 ? I want to use it as an attenuator . Thanks
I have one on the way for an attenuator only. I had the OXBox. And was not impressed and sold it. I hope this attenuates better. We’ll see
Whats your expirience?
I really wanted one of these but my Marshall has a great master and a low power mode. When i need to be really quiet I just run my Kemper profile of my amp.
I've modded my AC15 combo so i can use it with Captor X.
Hoping to order it next week 🤟
I looked at this and noticed that there are 8ohm and 16ohm versions of this. It's a shame that it doesn't have both in one unit.
Hello from one Di Iorio in Switzerland to a Di Iorio in Australia. If your families from Italy which part?
Great review! One thing I can't seem to find informations about is slaving whit the captor X, can it be done with both XLR line out?
Slaving what sorry?
@@intheblues Loading a tube amp and reamping it To a power amp.
I am using Helix Native with Logic Pro and no matter what I do I still feel that my 'amps' sound fizzy and artificial. I have some nice amps but they seldom work their way into my home studio recordings. If I were to use the TwoNotes with a real amp going into my DAW, and then use the DAW (with Helix Native) to add effects, would it sound considerably better and get me back that analog amp sound that I am missing?
I'm new to amps and I have this silly question
If I have say mesa boogie mark v 35 head and don't have speaker cab so can i connect head to the captor x and captor x output to PA system?
Hello Shane. I'm in apartment and can't record guitar amp with the mic. I have a blackstar HT5R, it has a cab sim which is sucks and a cab out , which I've never used yet. I can buy a Torpedo captor and use it with my Blackstar or I can sell my Blackstar and just buy a REVV amp for 250$ more. My concern is that the digital technology is getting outdated so fast, so REVV and Captor X will be replaced very soon with better and less expensive gear and I will waste all this money for nothing. My question: should I a buy good tube head with the Captor X, or REVV? I hope you can give you opinion on that topic. Thank you.
Straight into the DSL40, AC/DC.
I got one yesterday. I’ve used attenuators for 40 years. The Captor X makes my Princeton sound big and fat. Now I can record without using a mic.
Hey mate, if you are using the attenuator please can i ask what speaker cable you are using to connect your Princeton’s speaker to captor’s speaker out? I’m based in Australia and we don’t seem to have much options with the speaker cable connectors unlike the folks up in US.
I use the sm57 in front of my marshal dsl40cr the same one you’ve used before. I connect my sm57 to iRig Pre HD XLR interface and usb to my Mac and record in GarageBand. I don’t feel my recordings are a true representation of the sound of the amp in the room. Is the two-note also an interface to connect to the daw? Thanks
I’ve only used the cab m with an interface. I think you’ll need one with the captor x too.
It is not an interface
Got mine today now I need a tube amp
The price is pretty steep, almost as much as my DSL40. I was looking at the Bugera PS1, but they're sold out everywhere. What an expensive habit.
Stuff like this makes me wonder how many kids have never even plugged into an amp before? We've had the tech for years now to completely skip amps altogether. Anyone out there that's never rode the.lightning?
How do you see it compared to Boss waza TAE?
Would it even be a les Paul if it didn't go out of tune after bending lol?
is the speaker output on the back TRS?
So there's a few outputs. You get 2 x XLR, a return speaker jack for your amp (if needed), and a speaker input jack (same as you'd find on your amplifier cabinets).
Should I sell my cab M and purchase this or will the two complement each other?
It depends on your needs and what you require. If the Cab M does what you need then keep hold of it :-)
intheblues thanks for the reply! Thanks for your videos. Hopefully Aussie Hair Man returns for Halloween 👻
I use the Cab M and the Captor 8 to give me two unique output. Whoa. My guitar tracks are sounding amazing, because it sounds like I double tracked, and nope. Cab M with so many options and Captor 8 with a 4x12, this combination gives a great big sound
@@intheblues Two Cab M = price of Captor X
Different tools for different jobs - I recommend you have both!
Does it can handle my Marshall 1959HW 100w?
Yes, if it's 8ohm. If it's 16ohm you'll need that version :)
Just got one but can't play my Deluxe Reverb and even worse my 57 Deluxe at higher volumes without red-light clipping on the Captor. The distortion on the 57 is a disappointment. I'm thinking the Captor is made for amps with a lot more headroom than I have in my two Fenders.
Hi, just wondering about the issue you are experiencing. I am thinking of getting the captor x for use with a deluxe reverb ri, mainly for recording, but also for attenuation to push the amp harder at lower volumes. Was this clipping issue present when using the attenuation? Did you find a solution? Cheers
@@gambrinuspie I sold my X soon after making this comment. My memory is vague now, but I do recall that I couln't get the X to work well with my setup. No matter what, the X clipped as I turned it up. I've seen others make it work just fine with a DR and sold it without complaint. Could just be me not setting this up properly. Good luck!
Not cheap, but sounds great
RIP Eddie Van Halen! A true guitar innovator! \m/
Hah! I have the same monitor speakers as you. ...and now the same load box? We should be friends. ...but I'm a Vox guy.
Vox are great amps! :)
I had one of these. They are awesome! I had to sell it sadly because I was running low on cash. I did a cool video with a REALLY good Dumble clone with it on my channel if you want to check it out Shane! been a big fan for years.
7 "crappy sound guys" gave this awesome Shane vid a thumbs down.
I need this rad piece of gear for my extremely loud PRS Archon. \m/
If I had the bread, absolutely. Alas...bought too many pedals and it's all Shane's fault :p
JK mate.
anyone make their own iso cabs ? I dont want to spring for one if i can help it ...if i can make one
My thought is to make a small one for drums ....
that triples up in use as a vocal booth and a guitar speaker iso room ...
dunno if that is gonna work ...but it wont be so boxy if its big enough for drums -3 birds - one stone
I think people in Australia exhibit upside down thinking... At least this one can really play the blues well/good. Australians... They're almost human 😂
