"His soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead."
[Lord Gregory:] If you be the Lass of Aughrim As I suppose you not to be, Come tell me the last token That passed between you and me. [Young Woman] Oh Gregory, don’t you remember That night on yon lean hill? When we both met together Which I’m sorry now to tell. The rain falls on my yellow locks. The dew it wets my skin. My babe lies cold within my arms. Oh Gregory, let me in. Oh Gregory, don’t you remember One night on yon lean hill? When we swapped rings Off each others hands Sorely against my will. Yours was of the beaten gold. Mine was but black tin. Yours cost one guinea, love. Mine was but one cent. The rain falls on my yellow locks. The dew it wets my skin. My babe lies cold within my arms. Oh Gregory, let me in. Oh Gregory, don’t you remember That night in my Father’s hall? When you had your will of me And that was worse than all. The rain falls on my yellow locks. The dew it wets my skin. My babe lies cold within my arms. Oh Gregory, let me in. # # #
I listened to this song right after I finished reading the story ...The dead...while reading the story I couldn't think of a reason why possibly the author titled it as such until I reached the end and for some reason unknown I started believing that the author came to hear this song beforehand and the story followed.. .
Sweet and inspiring performance of this sad song of seduction and betrayal. Annie Barnacle (Nora's mother) sang this song to Joyce during his visit to Galway in 1909.
This is the sweetest, most complete version of this song that I've been able to find on you tube! I would love to find a recording of it on cd. Does anyone know if there is a cd w/this version available, & if so, where it may be found? I also really like the version Susan Lynch & Ewen Mcgregor sing together at the bar in Trieste in the move "Nora."
If you like this version there's also a very lovely rendition performed by david Patrick Kelly for David Lynch behind the scenes of Twin Peaks it's here on UA-cam
Outstanding job by both of these artists. I have had Feeley's instruction book/cassette from Walton's for decades. I am a slow learner ;) Joyce's guitar sounds nice. Just a passing thought: I wonder whether there could be an implied deeper meaning in Joyce's "the Dead" of the long-lamented Micheal Furey's singing of this song (and whatever love tokens passed between him and Gretta). I wouldn't put it past James Joyce to do that. ;)
I’m here from “Beautiful World, Where are You”
Me too!
Et moi
Same!
and me!
I imagine how felix sang it
I'm bawling my eyes out. Thank you, Sally Rooney.
Edit: Imagine the great Ms. Rooney finding us all here 😅
same here!!!
I wonder how many people watch this video after reading her book 😊
YES
Me too, just looked it up.
Damn, same here
"His soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead."
Who came after "Dubliners"?
Hüsnü Yavuz Aytekin me
Me.
Me as well
me
Here I am. Epiphany
Beautiful performance! Sublime!
Just read James Joyce's 'The Dead' and could not help the urge to listen to the quoted song.
+Pedro Soares Ich auch
eu também vim graças a Joyce.
It was so sad reading it while listening to this version :'(
Same here. I didn't expect it to find it played on the author's own guitar. It doesn't get much more authentic than that.
The same happened to me while reading (right now) The Dead
Here because of Felix Brady! ❤
Thank you Sally Rooney ❤

interesting version... Where is this version from, please?
sad.
Gregory seems like a douche if u ask me🤷
it wasn't Gregory though, it was his mom who disapproved of the girl or one or her servants
Michael Furey 😢

I still have mental scenes of Felix driving Alice to Tears with this song. Oh Beautiful world, where are you?
God imagining Felix sing this gives me goosebumps
Just finished reading the Dead. Thanks for posting.
See the John Huston movie.
Marvelous interpretations. Real dedication not only to Ireland, music and JJ's use of the song in The Dead.
The older I get, the more beautiful this song is to me.
Just read ''The Dead'', and had to listen to this song
Powerful ending
Mr D'Arcy!
Very beautiful. The tone of the voice is very pleasant and was excellent with the guitar. Perfect match between voice and guitar arrangement.
Beautiful best cover on UA-cam
Exquisite. Thanks to all.
I’m here after reading the last story of the Dubliners. What a song… I miss my home, Dublin…
Totally wonderful.

Oddly, I prefer Patrick Kelly's performance better. It was a magic moment caught on film.
i think David Patrick Kelly's version is the definitive performance of this song
Tears to my eyes

Reassuring to see/hear musical artists of the same/similar vintage able to acquit themselves so adeptly.

MrMusicguyma I think the line “Gregory let me in” has a sombre relevance to Michael Furey’s tragic story.
And the mention of rain of course
In his speech, Gabriel Conroy talks of the Irish tradition of hospitality--which you can't do unless you first "let me in".
Lovely.
The Dead by James Joyce brought me here.
잔잔한 기타선율과 목소리가 듣기좋으네여 :)
Isn't that the Music Room of Newman House!
thanks sally :)
