WOW- I have a Harbor Freight generator that hadn't been started in more than a year, and after I gave up pulling on the starter I Googled "gas generator won't start". Watched your video, did exactly as you showed with the carb cleaner and BINGO, started right up. Can't thank you enough for saving me $$$ repair, AND the aggravation of loading a monster-heavy generator for transport to the shop,

Excellent advice. Bought a generator 15 years ago, never used. Followed your instructions regarding the spray. Generator started on second attempt. Now running smoothly. It will be very useful as a backup during the expected power outages due to the expected fuel crisis in the UK this winter. Many thanks.

Ten years after this video I used it to get my Honda 5KW running after I let it sit over the spring/summer of 2023. Worked like a charm! I usually run the generator every two/three months under a 10-15% load but had overlooked it this year. Again, starting fluid spray worked like a Champ. Thanks again!

You saved me $200! I had made up my mind if my generator wouldn't start by the end of the weekend I would pay somebody no more than $200 to fix it or else get a new generator. I watched your video and strayed starter fluid into the carburetor just like you showed and the generator started on the third try. Working back to normal now. Thanks, you're a genius!

GREAT ADVICE. My generator has sat idle for about 6 months and wouldn't start. After 15 minutes of frustration I watched this video, changed the spark plug, used some Canadian tire carb cleaner and quick start , followed the video start up instructions and it started on the first crank. Many, many thanks from a man who has very little patience with these things.

Dude. You're my hero. I've neglected my generator for two years...so of course it was dead when I needed it.
I've followed your instructions to the T. Sprayed carb and drained it. Gave a crank good pull....and... nothing.
Then I've realized that I've used to much gunk cleaner....so I gave it a rest with air filter off. 20 minutes later....restarted in a first pull!
    You're my hero!

My Champion 5000 watt generator has been sitting in the garage for 2 years. I started it once when I first bought it. Tried to start it the other day, no-go. Thanks. I used Gumout carb cleaner sprayed into the carb like you showed. It started to life for a few seconds and then died each time. It showed me that it was definitely not getting any fuel. This led me to other videos on cleaning the carburetor, which I did and was successful. The thing now runs like a charm. Next step - diagnose and repair electric start. At least it's a breeze now to pull start. Thanks again!

You just saved me from throwing out my shoulder trying to get mine started. There is an ice storm warning here in Detroit, and I needed to know I could get my generator started. The thing is practically brand new, and has a total of 3.5 hours on it. I have tried unsuccessfully two or three times in the last six months to get it started. I went and got a can of starting fluid and barely sprayed any in the choke and it started up on the first pull. Thank you, good sir, for this video. I am not handy, and would probably went and bought another generator today if it weren't for this video.

I use a generator with that EXACT engine but mostly in the summer. Every fall, I run the tank dry. I always use 91 octane gas, and add Stabil for that last tank, but I did have a hard time starting it last spring. You bet I’m going to have a can of carb cleaner handy next time i go to crank it up!

Thanks! Followed your instructions exactly and generator started immediately. Hadn't been started for over a year. Had old gas in it but fortunately also had Sta-Bil mixed with the old gas. In the past, used Starter Spray. But carb & choke cleaner worked perfectly. Especially appreciate the advice on how to open and close the choke while spraying. Never saw that elsewhere. My generator is a Chinese clone of the Honda (Dura-Max) and is dual fuel. Have to warm it up with a gasoline run first and then works well with Propane. Runs about 12 hours on a 20# tank of propane and is much quieter than when it runs on gasoline.
My local area had no power for 5 days so starting a "dead" generator was very helpful.

Thanks very much for posting this. You saved our Thanksgiving dinner. Power went out at 4am, just as my wife was putting the turkey in the oven. I got the generator out but low and behold it wouldn't start. Murphy's Law...It starts when I run it just to run it but not when I need it. Anyway, while I was outside struggling to get it started my wife found your video and called me in to watch it. Your advice worked perfectly. Thanks for the tips; I had changed my spark plug and was pulling with no success last year - so it sat, added Stabil to it - but it didn't help, I think I pulled my shoulder muscle. Although mine wasn't a Chinese version or Honda, the Brigs and Straton was similar in setup, filter and choke and fuel shutoff. Didn't see the carb bowl (drain) yet, but once I did the quick start it ran for about 10min, I'll play with it again tomorrow once it's light out again and not during neighbor sleep hours too early in the morning. But it started up on the first pull -nice tip.

Andy I live in the Philippines and i can't get starting fluid anywhere. Do you reckon WD40 will do the job? Got a new genny and I don't want to bugger it up. The electric start is fine, but I want my elderly in laws to be able to start it manually, just in case. They get mega power cuts here, for days at a time, so a stanby gen is essential.

    Hey Dony, thanx again!
Mine was actually a jammed needle in the seat. blew into fuel filter and heard this horrible gurgling sound and it cleared.
I still jammed the carb cleaner up the main jet/aspirator just to make sure and boom, she's happily humming away again.
Rule, start her up a couple times a year. I also added fuel stabiliser as well because it also has cleaning properties in it.
    Cheers!
    Mick
L.E I've got one of those GenPower 3 or 3.5KWunits with the plastik casing around it, which would have been a pain to dissassemble to gain full access to the carb to service it.

Very helpful reminder to start with the easiest and simplest solution first. I had a generator that should have been stored properly but wasn’t. It worked the first time!

I made the mistake of leaving gas in my new Champion generator for > a year and this video was exactly what I needed. I drained the gas out of the bottom of the carburetor put in new gas and it worked great. Won't make that mistake again! Thanks for the excellent video.

Watched your video. Craftsman Generator with a 10 HP Briggs & Stratton. Sprayed the starter fluid into the carb, closed the choke and it started on the first pull.

worked like a charm....thanks! I verified the spark then used the starter fluid and bam! I like the added tip below to shut off the gas line. My B&S generator seemed to run for at least a minute or two on the gas that was in the line.

Thank you so much for the great tips. I spent the whole day trying to start my generator, and thankfully I came across your video. One quick trip to Walmart to get the carb cleaner and the generator is running like new.

Starting Fluid is a must if you have a Generator.
Starting fluid is the LOVE OF MY LIFE.
I even spray it directly into the side of the Air Intake directly with the sponge
