Joel is the only celebrity in entertainment industry that I really care about. His honesty and complete discrimination against fakeness is a breath of fresh air in a world full of salesmen
Deadmau5 (Joel Zimmerman): Artist, Web designer, DJ, producer, photoshop master, 3D modeler, creative director and producer, can factory worker, coffee maker, IT manager, IT specialist.... the list of his professions goes on....
iMicca im like this xD i produce music, programm, building electronic circuits and collect consoles and devices people throw away, sometimes you can use parts of it.
He was mad at Skrillex cuz Skrill sold him self to the deal easy. He felt his friend is being used. Now from my view after seeing and listening to him explain what he means I think Joel is ryt. We know Mau5 doesn't really get with big artists in the game that every one knows, he likes to dig and find new ones, I like that
I will have to admit, Joel can be a jerk at times, but he has good points too. I respect Skrillex a lot, but i do not like how recently, he just feels like he lost some quality control, both in terms of his music, and OWSLA's music. It's like he accepts anything that will go off live no matter what. I still respect him, and i understand he made this choice himself, but still.
if you call this marketing, then what are streamers? fucking idiot viewers, cheer their names all day, give them money and everything for doing fucking nothing.
Deadmau5 is Amerika's real first commercial 'house' name, but we here in Europe on a smaller scale have been doing this for much longer. I'm about the same age as Joel and i've been listening to electronic music for almost 30 year and i'll never stop.
Its been an interesting arc here in America for Electronic music. Its only really been since about 2008 that it became popular and probably only in the last 5 years has "EDM" become the main pop music for America. I think that is one of the reasons why Joel is bitter now, he helped launch House to America then the corporations took notice and sucked the soul out of it.
What an amazing, insightful video! I totally agree with everything you mentioned. He's honest, brutally and unapologetically so, and he makes absolutely fantastic, high quality music.
people aren't now all of a sudden looking for experiences, they've always wanted it. but theres key 2 differences now, 1) with music streaming and ability to download any song, artists themselves push for big intricate shows because they know it'll bring in more revenue and spread their name 2) with the explosion of social media, everyone wants to share that they went and did something to their friends and sometimes general public.
I've chatted with Joel before on an impromptu visit of his to a certain online forum. I can't even say he's 'surprisingly' genuine, because there's no surprise to it. What you see is what you get. Cool dude.
**The reason the honesty plays a factor here is of course *the product* of his songs. All music is music, but his music is technical and raw and arguably high-quality. You could, as an artist, say "I hate this album I did" if it wasn't 100% your product as in other producers, artists, etc, made it exist, and that would absolutely be a real fuckin dumb move. But as mau5 who puts the work in 100% himself, being critical of his work that is good work that is real work is the only option and absolutely works
deadmau5 music may appeal to few bit his character appeals to so many. look at his shirts, designs, things he do, games he plays, car industry he is in (and invests)...he is very much in tech world which is blowing up
I feel like Deadmau5 is merely the meeting of old-style fame and the modern form of fame. Many years ago and up to recent years, the way fame worked was that you had a person who was well known for what they did and that was all anyone knew. The wow factor was that these people are made to seem larger than life and more than just people. Nowadays we see the rise of a new form of fame, one where the person is well known, but they are viewed more on a personal level, like a mutual friend everyone has despite most having few if any interactions with them. These are the youtube and social media stars who try their hardest to connect with the audience and show "hey, I'm just like you." Deadmau5 is unique because he has this larger than life aspect to him, with his music and being seen around these super popular and rich celebrities but at the same time we see him on a more personal level, with him connecting and interacting with his fans on social media and in his streams. This along with his no bullshit attitude makes it to where he is able to have this deep connection with his audience while still having the recognition of a traditional celebrity.
To sum things up. Be yourself and use that as your product. Don't be some character you invented in your head because you think that's what people want to see. Be who you are and don't be afraid of showing it. There are always people out there who like people like you and are willing to follow you if they like your work. Honesty and being yourself is the best way to build a community. I can use myself as an example: I have a music account with 24 subs. 24 may not sound like a lot, but I've been honest from the beginning. I've always said that I don't care whether I have one sub or 100 subs or hell, 1000 subs. It doesn't matter to me. What matters is that someone else than my family and friends wants to listen to what I do. I haven't uploaded anything for the past 2 years because my HDD decided to randomly delete all my project files and the backup of those, just 2 months before I were supposed to release my first EP. I told people that, just as I've talked about any other problems I've come across. This straight up led to one of the guys who've been following me from the beginning to ask whether I was okay and if I was going to release any new music. I only have 24 subs on that account. Yet I still got that response and I replied with that I planned to soon release something again. Same goes with this account, which is my gaming user. I haven't released anything in 2 years, but I've neither lost a single sub. I may have super small communities, but none are leaving, cause they know that I will release something eventually. I would never leave without saying so first. I would never just abandon my communities without giving disclosures as to why. That's being completely honest and also who I am. So be you. People want to see you. Even if you think you aren't good enough. If anyone can assure you that you are, it'll be the community you build. It's hard to build a massive community. But not to build a small one and if you aren't doing it for fame and/or money, then the size of the community is irrelevant. I do what I do for the art and because I like doing it. Be honest. People are tired of all these lies.
No, this doesn't mean fan's desires have changed. What it means is that technology undermined the value proposition of singles and albums, leaving artists having to fall back on tours as a source of revenue. What this means isn't that fans NOW want an experience, they always did. What it means is that ticket prices are high because the tours aren't just a way to get attention.
His personality is certainly an acquired taste. Like he is genuinely kind of a dick. But it's an honest kind of being a dick. He doesn't care if he pisses off others, and he doesn't seem to be too malicious in it. It doesn't feel forced. It just adds to his genuineness which is part of his appeal. Honestly it's fascinating how the guy who hides his face in any show is one of the most open and honest celebs out there.
That is super interesting, didn't even know about how he's running business. Thought he was making super cool music and that's it. Really interesting to see how he went about it. Thanks you for that video!
deadmau5 has always associated himself with Canada and made fun of those who chose to leave Canada and base themselves in the US. his more recent releases have been released through mau5trap , a canadian label, i suppose "the US" is appropriate though..
Great video. Linkin Park was great at this as well, although they let their audience do more of the heavy lifting in the world building process via the LPU (Linkin Park Underground).
Hi Alex. Thanks for making this video. I’ve liked it and it’s not even halfway through. I love how a lot of your content can be so niche and yet very original. As an artist it’s alwaus good to know this stuff. Cheers - Arron
This makes me think about Wintergaten's series of building the Marble machine X. Before I probably would have just watched the music video, but after seeing the process it took to build it I would totally go out to see it in action if he performed near me.
I wish forza 7 will have some mouse tracks, I now Joel would be so down with having his music in racing games, with his love for cars. lots of his tracks would be perfect for menu and racing music
You said "I know Joel would be down to have some of his tracks on a racing game.." and I thought to let you know that some of his tracks were used on Project Cars, a racing game.
Are you sure the money was made off of paid media? I would imagine everything from photoshoots, art, printing, distribution, sellers cut from a $15-$20 CD would all cost a LOT more than putting on a $40-$100 concert (times however many people show up). I think events have always been where the money is.
Dominated by Mainstream Pop acts? Dude, MAINSTREAM as in everywhere and POP as in popular. You just said that the most popular music has been popular music. Well done!
ItsZ3DD pop is often considered a genre by most people now despite it being short for popular. there are artists now that self identify as pop and aren't popular or mainstream

KSHMR is pretty honest too.
he is the opposite of Alan Walker ....
If only he'd speak up about the Asian 'idol' scene :P
Noah L. Whatcha mean?
I just think he'd say some really entertaining things like, "They're just prancing around and they don't even know how to sing!"

iMicca Jack of all trades master of only music...
Also joel: The clap is me slapping my ass cheecks
Ah yess, ASS CLAP
😌
We fail
Title should be changed to deadmau5: I am Marketing for Him Right Now
yee
thats u zorrio
xD
Durrant Miller oh hi Durant miller
There's a creative freedom Joel has that is so rare today. A one of a kind carefree jokester producer vibe that I love.
You forgot to mention how he trolls other artists in the music industry by poking fun at them. For example that Were Are U Know Now remix
didn't work out so well arguing with porter robinson lmao, had his ass handed to him
He was mad at Skrillex cuz Skrill sold him self to the deal easy. He felt his friend is being used. Now from my view after seeing and listening to him explain what he means I think Joel is ryt. We know Mau5 doesn't really get with big artists in the game that every one knows, he likes to dig and find new ones, I like that
but skrillex went his own direction and started a record label and he too likes to dig and find new aritsts. OWSLA
I will have to admit, Joel can be a jerk at times, but he has good points too. Fantastic video
Real Engineering woah real engineering commented I am a fan of yours. I am fortunate enough to reply you the first.
One more thing, HI THERE
Much appreciated

The other part of it is that he actually knows quite a lot when it comes to the technical aspects of his live shows.
dead mow cinco
Zorrio "i still dont get it" 😂😂😂
+Auggy 7 cinco means 5 in Spanish.
Bibis Product Placements lol i know that. What i commented is on Joel's Twitter😂😂😂
"i still dont get it" is joels bio on twitter
*No*
What an amazing, insightful video! I totally agree with everything you mentioned. He's honest, brutally and unapologetically so, and he makes absolutely fantastic, high quality music.
KILLROZE agreed. Thanks for the comment
I got a deadmau5 ad for MasterClass before the video...

Gwar has had crazy stage shows since the 80's... way ahead of their time...

This video makes me think of Jeff Kaplan from Overwatch. Not at all a trained spokesperson but the community adores him.
It's where all markets are going - expect a lot less media training in all industries; Joel's a real dude, and the audience resonates with it

Great video! Got a lot of good information off of it. Thanks!
He didn’t like ‘’Faxing Berlin’’, one of his best works ever lol that’s how much critical of himself he is.
What an artist
Great video. Linkin Park was great at this as well, although they let their audience do more of the heavy lifting in the world building process via the LPU (Linkin Park Underground).

Joel acts like an ordinary guy and he posts normal stuff on Instagram. His character is great so many like him.
NICE VIDEO GREAT KNOWLEDGE I SUBSCRIBED NOW
Where you at Durant Miller?
Okay I guess I'll watch this video now that deadmau5 linked it on Twitter.
I wish forza 7 will have some mouse tracks, I now Joel would be so down with having his music in racing games, with his love for cars. lots of his tracks would be perfect for menu and racing music
He had a couple of his tracks in Project Cars
what!??!
You said "I know Joel would be down to have some of his tracks on a racing game.." and I thought to let you know that some of his tracks were used on Project Cars, a racing game.
Mr. Zimmerman reposted this vids link. Awesome got more awesome
What song is Playing in the background towards the end?
Deadmau5 once pranked Skrillex by wearing a tshirt with Skrillex's personal phone number. Gotta love Joel for that alone
15th time watching this video, never gets boring
Great to hear
no, fans are ripping off musicians and not buying music !
They can't do that at a event.. hence the focus changed.
the fans didnt change, the marketing system changed the fans.
Good call
Always knew he's a genius.
Who ever shot and edited this was awesome! Who was it?!
5:35 , The picture matches on the head/shoulders of Joel.
Twitch is a big part of Joel's advertising nowadays
Deadmau5 is the best
you deserve more subs
Get notified about our nektht thegment.
Basically you need fandom, strong fanbase, which deadmau5 has.
stop advertising then
so.....how much did he pay you to promote him?
Does he actually have a different mouse head each show though?
In Canada... not United States

ɲɸɸɳ yes
You clearly conpletely missed the context he was talking in and took him literally instead.
What if he looked back to this video and some what low key didn't know some of the stuff he was doing that had meaning on this video?
