Just have a doubt, I have DELL XPS 13, intel core i5, when I run the PC health check, I see a amber warning about TPM -- Recomended setting says Specification version should be 2.0. For some PCs there may be some prep work that needs to be done before upgrading (not a clean install) to Windows 11. For one, the boot sector on the partition has to be GPT (GUID partition table) and not MBR (master boot record) . If you go into BIOS and enable UEFI and disable CSM (Compatibility Support Module) without GPT, it's possible that your PC will boot back into BIOS and not to Windows. In a clean install, I assume that Windows 11 automatically installs the GPT. Even after the initial installation, rebooting the PC might cause a boot into BIOS instead of Windows, but that can be corrected by enabling UEFI and disabling CSM. This was my experience on an AMD system using an Asus board. If anyone here has this specific problem and needs help, I can post the full process I used to accomplish the prepping I needed to install Windows 11.

    • @neilios08
      @neilios08 2 роки тому +2

      I just literally had this exact issue. Disabled CSM and enabled secure boot in my BIOS (gigabyte x570 board) and windows will not boot. I read somewhere you have to convert from MBR to GPT for this to work? Because until I do that the health check will not pass, but I need to get back into windows 10 to run the health check which I can't do by enabling this option! xD

      @kel5423 2 роки тому +15

      @@neilios08
      The steps I had to take to prep my PC for a Windows 11 upgrade (not a clean install).
      1. Check to see if hardware is Windows 11 compatible.
      2. Check in System Information for the BIOS Mode. If it is Legacy, then it has to be changed to UEFI in BIOS. Can only be done if the boot drive is GPT (GUID partition table) formatted, follow procedure to convert the partition below. Using this method to convert from MBR to GPT will not format or harm your partition, but as always, you should backup your drive before attempting anything like this.
      3. Check boot drive's partition for boot layout. Go to Device Manager > Disk Drives > right mouse click on drive and select Properties > click Volumes tab > click Populate. If the boot layout is MBR (master boot record), then the drive has to be converted tp GPT.
      4. TPM (trusted platform module) activation in BIOS either per hardware or software emulation (for my board I enabled fTPM in BIOS).
      5. Covert MBR to GPT using Windows mbr2gpt tool.
      Before converting MBR to GPT:
      Check the amount of partitions on the boot drive, cannot be more than 3. If there are more than three, then a partition has to be deleted before converting to GPT. If you need to delete a recovery partition, then follow the instructions below on How To Delete A Recovery Partition. Make sure that all data is backed up from the partition you are deleting.
      BE VERY CAREFUL WHICH PARTITION YOU CHOOSE! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DELETE THE PARTITION YOU ARE BOOTING FROM (where Windows is installed)!
      How to delete a recovery partition:
      • Open CMD with admin rights
      • Type diskpart
      • Type list disk
      • Type select disk (and then the number of the disk)
      • Type list partition
      • Type select partition (and then the number of the partition)
      • Type delete partition override
      After deleting the partition(s): go to Disk Management, right click on the boot partition, click on Extend Volume, choose the Unallocated partition(s) to absorb.
      Convert MBR to GPT:
      • Open CMD with admin rights
      • Type mbr2gpt.exe /convert
      • If an error occurs that states "can only be used from the Windows preinstallation environment", then type mbr2gpt.exe /convert /allowfullos
      6. Disable CSM in BIOS
      7. Enable UEFI Only in BIOS
      8. Reboot PC…after reboot, PC is ready to install Windows 11

    The following day an upgrade came for Win 11, I thought, wow, they gave me an adjusted version. Installed it was not. No matter, I learned my lesson. Now I am gack to Win 50, loving it. Being very low in vision could be blamed but I think with very low vision I have become very lazy. What I did see of Win 11 i really nice. I like the placement os some thins such as the centering of the start menu and certain high resolution points, very nice for me. Its windows, If you want absolute security then switch to a Linux distro. The truth is hackers will always target windows users first, because of how the operating system works. I dont see them making that much of a significant change to the structure of their OS anytime soon. Although windows defender is actually pretty good. If you know even a little bit about network security than you wouldnt need Windows to fix those back doors, and you know damn well that windows isnt the best option if you want absolute security anyways

    KEVIN, love your videos and I know you can help with this! I can't be the only one... I just bought a new Dell Inspiron laptop. Everything's been fine except the INSERT key doesn't work. It presses, it is recognized as Insert, but it doesn't toggle into overwrite mode. Still under warranty, called Dell support, ran keyboard test, insert key shows pressed, but failed the test. They want me to mail in the computer but this is not a physical problem as far as I can see. I can't spare being without laptop for 3 weeks anyway. A new rep contacted me, showed me an unchecked setting in Word and insert key worked ... but only in Word! Not even in OneNote and not in non-Microsoft programs. She says I can pay for software support but isn't this an operating system issue? Like there's some global setting I need to check? How can nobody else use the insert key? Also Dell thinks the key is shared with PrtScr, not so, Insert is the only word on the key. Please make a video! Insert/Overwrite is very useful to save time. Thank you!

If it works for several days, backup it again, otherwise roll back using the image.
