That's mainly the shotgun shell in the Coffman starter. Pulling the lever merely initiates correct rotation of the engine and the detonation of the shell.

@ArgoPower When the grid goes down. We will be relying on DC 12 and 24 volt systems. Alternators and generators are powered by engines burning diesel and just about anything else like kerosene, gasoline, and plain old oil 🛢. DC is the only electricity we'll have. Charging batteries and running inverters, etc... Citizen band radio short wave radios will be the only communications well have. Anyway... if engines like this start by hand, it's great, but we will be able to use push button starters in a 3-way system. -Battery=source -Path=wiring -Components= Starters/alternators, etc... Unless there's some technology I don't know about that, maybe you can use a transformer or booster converting DC power into AC power for high voltage applications... 🤔
Anyone else notice that the engine is in backwards? The flywheel and clutch face the front of the vehicle with a chain attached behind a guard. Running to a jack shaft that runs back to the rear of the vehicle. Possibly to a transmission.
There is a link in this short video that will take you to my corresponding long-format video, which shows this vehicle in more detail. There you will also find video material showing this racecar being driven on the road. 😊
I've seen this many times and most startups were unintentional. Detroit Diesel 2 stroke engines. For decades those engines powered marine craft, ag and construction equipment and a large portion of over the road trucks. A mechanic had to be very careful to turn the engine, even by hand very slowly ( such as when replacing a clutch or running the rack) because they started easily and quickly..they literally roared to life.
So, I'm ignorant on these style engines, I admit. Does enough oil make it up top to keep the valve train lubricated? If so, does it blow back under speed and make a mess? Or... is there actually a valve cover that will be placed on top before lift off?
Good thing it starts easy, WOW, what an engine of an era gone by.
👍✊️

If its an airplane engine, they used to pull on the propeller to start it. A lot safer this way.
Certainly a "nifty" start-up !! 😅
What a beast
That's an old Arm Strong starter.
That's mainly the shotgun shell in the Coffman starter. Pulling the lever merely initiates correct rotation of the engine and the detonation of the shell.
Now you know why the drivers of that time wore goggles. The oil would fly off the valve train. Very cool 😎

The absolute pinnacle of 100 year old engineering.

Nope, it works also with high voltage for sparks
There are no emp.. only in movies. idiot muricans.

Good because it's so very simple!
Good engineering is always simplicity.
if the timing wasn't set just right that handle could put a knot on your head, good vid
Fits External Valvetrain perfectly !
Sounds fuc%$ng great man and starts pretty good as well .
That 4 popper has a big cam! high compression. ❤
Like a kickstarter on a bike.
Like a front churner w/o a flywheel. 😅😅
Now that’s cool 👏😮
The best, without battary !😂
Yes i have, i used to own a motorcycle that used that system
Was. It. A. Lea. 200. Velleset. Only. Bike. I. Have. Ever. Seen. Start. Like. That cheers
I seen it 50 years ago when I watched Chitty, Chitty Bang Bang....lol
Imagine the oil blowback after a fast drive on the highway 😂
WTF?
Sounds like a 468 pro mod waiting at the water box.
Impressive👍
Grazie mille! 😊
Kushman scooters start the same way.
Cushman?
Oh I love that car. Seeing it race is by far the most entertaining thing❤
Why are the cylinders "TREMBLING" so (much)?
Whom are they scared of?
The "GHOST DRIVER (👻)?"
😂😂😂
I suspect the engine was shut off just before the video started. It makes for a nice easy start.
just quirt some gas in the carb, sparky sparky set right it will start easy like anything else , lawn mower , r/c plane, dirt bike ,

I would have liked to have seen it drive by

I honestly wish that something similar to this was how we could start our cars. Truly amazing how old technology worked! 🤯
How cool is that? I'd love to be doing that on a cold Australian Sunday morning.
😂😂😂😂

Bet those 2 SU's have a hard time next to those exhaust pipes! 🔥🥵
That engine would be short lived in an off road environment. A very cool manual starting method!
My starter motor is on its way out,
Peugeot wants £520 to replace it !!!
You have given me a idea 👻👻👻
🤣🤣

Love that starter man !!!!
That's gota be one of the coolest ways to start up any engine I've seen started...
I love that fly wheel crank. ThAts freaking cool.

as a matter of fact, we used to have a radial air compressor that started the same way...and sometimes it was a bitch to start...lol
Sounds absolutely awesome
The ultimate in coolness
Would like to know more about this vehicle .. very cool
Of course I saw such starters - on East-German water-pumps! 🙂😂
Wow - that's very impressive. But, looks like the exposed valvetrain would get grimy and dirty.
It’s easy to start with the engine advance control located on the steering wheel just advance to full for starting….😊❤
Just like a bike kickstart
Chitty Chitty got pimped
Did you start that with a moped handle 🤔
Love the BARK of that little 4 cylinder
Man, if they kicked back it would hurl you
Les culbuteurs sans huile !?!?!
J’aime beaucoup le démarreur !!!!
Thats unique...but where is the oil flow on those lifters...i must be missing something
Grease nipples to the rocker arms.
No, upon closer look you can see the oiler pipes to the rockers.
As for the pushrod lifters, oil mist is coming up from the crankcase.
@@arvidsolli7698 okay thanks for info.
Is the picture reversed, or is it in Australia, because the engine is running in reverse.
Yeah, the footage is so reversed that you can see Alpinestars perfectly legible on the man's suit.
What kind of car was that and how many cylinders ? Who made the engine !
So whats the clutch on the front of the crank driving?
Ghitty Chitty bang bang
That's a dependable starter motor !!!!
Sounds healthy as well. Pretty damn cool!
I am totally 100% there.
That has to be extremely well tuned to start that way.
That must be a wwi aircraft engine?
I know this from Singlecylinder BMW 300 industrial Engine as 2kW Generator. It‘s close by of the R25 Bike.

So
A modified kick start .
Kind a like them old washing machine motors had a foot starter
Wow, the Ole girl sounds angry. I bet it hauls ass..probably dangerously fast.
No OSHA presence here.
Looks like a Ford pressure plate over the clutch
It is a Mercedes pressure plate out of a '70s 408 van. But they are about the same.
Old air cooler with some wicked compression. You'd need a good starter.

why is this car not in MAd max?
yeah, this racer would definitely make a good addition to the Mad Max vehicle line-up !
Long lever for high stating torque with a clever idea of quarter gear wheel to dis engage with engine shaft. After giving starting power
It would be soooo cool to start our cars like this
cool idea and you might still be able to make it with a piece of flexplace and some ratchet thing
Start better than mine 😅

No lube on the valves. No problem
